- bonzomcgrue, on 10/16/2007, -3/+649I'm trying to figure out which laws these officers are trying to enforce. It seems like petty harassment to me.
I'm amazed that these cops don't realize the harm they're doing to the public image of law enforcement. Because of a video camera and the Internet, millions of people saw (the now jobless) officer Kuehnlein threaten this kid with false charges. - inactive, on 10/16/2007, -4/+472So the ***** morons want to lose their jobs and hand this guy a huge cash settlement for harassing him, is that it?
What kind of dumbasses are running the PD out there?
So with national attention they are going to play the fool again?
This kid is going to end up getting millions, and those cops will never find police work in any decent area.
Seriously, what is wrong with these people? How much of a scumbag do you have to be to want to retaliate against someone for showing you up as a scumbag.
These cops are going to need to be 100% clean and by the book if they want to ***** with this kid, or his lawyer will eat them up.
Let's see, that's 3 (THREE) ***** incidents he's been in with lying cops from the same ***** corrupt department.
It's insane that the whole dept wasn't investigated top to bottom, and it's insane that their complaints against the police have not had a second look taken at them. I'm sure many were dismissed that had the victim had a camera in their car their complaint would never have been dismissed. - gadgetuk, on 10/16/2007, -4/+218It's clear the cops knew they shouldn't have been there. You can bet if they saw someone else pulling that right-turn -> u-turn manoeuvre they'd pull them over for it.
I feel bad for this kid, he needs to make sure he's got intelligent people nearby at all times or he's going to get fitted up. Kuehnlein may have been an ***** for saying that he could invent a reason to lock him up... but chillingly enough... he really could have and so can his ex-colleagues. - Bilabrin, on 10/16/2007, -2/+199I think this shows we all should get cameras for our cars.
- MadScientist420, on 10/16/2007, -4/+179how about you ***** pigs go fight some real crime. God knows there's plenty of that in St. Louis.
- senorcool, on 10/16/2007, -4/+175Don't they know Digg is always watching them?
- ZipZapZorp, on 10/16/2007, -1/+160The scariest part of this whole mess is what happens when these cops don't have a camera on them. I can't even imagine how they act when they're dealing with some of the poorest sections of St. Louis, of which there are unfortunately a lot. I'd say pretty surely that the worst offenses aren't the ones that we've seen on video camera.
- nvrmnd, on 10/16/2007, -7/+164"Every copper, City and County, should etch this little punks [sic] name in their [sic] memory. Brett Darrow, [address deleted], city of St. Louis."
I suppose one should be used to unmistakable corruption and petty revenge, but we cannot tolerate poor punctuation and grammar from our police officers :P - Achaean, on 10/10/2007, -2/+142i'm getting sick and tired of corrupt law enforcement in this country.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+125I had a woman hit me, spit in my face, call me N***** and then call the police. Guess who they arrested. We've been saying it for 50 years (if not more). Are you ready to start believing it now? No? Didn't think so.
- mkriss5681, on 10/10/2007, -0/+112It sounds like to me this kid has a serious harassment lawsuit against the St. Louis police department especially after the death threats.
- superfusion, on 10/10/2007, -1/+109Oh man, at some point you just disband the department and start over. It's no longer about a guy ... what the hell kind of country can sustain cops who despise law enforcement.
- orangerust, on 10/10/2007, -8/+108Cops have been abusing their power in this country for far too long. And while we are not quite to the "Gestapo' (sorry for the spelling) level of intrusive behavior we are certainly heading towards it.
Cops are above misdemeanors but not felonies. They cannot get away with murder (at least i hope), but they can get away with assault and stalking all day long. Ask any black person if they have encountered a racist cop, I'll bet you they have. So while they system is not completely broke, it certainly has its cracks.
Most people that become cops admittedly got into the biz because "they thought it would be fun", or "it beats sitting in an office all day" very few state that they actually wanted to "protect and serve'. From Rodney King, to a state trooper getting head from a porn star to this, its clear that NWA was right. F*** tha police - geoffoliver, on 10/10/2007, -2/+96What this kid is "doing" is capturing police corruption on video for the world to see. He deserves a ***** medal and a day of the year!
- amillion3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+94Isn't it illegal to post up someones personal info (address, phone #, etc) in an attempt to harass them? What about that 'stolen video camera' that was on digg a few months back?
- gkavalec, on 10/10/2007, -7/+97> It's insane that the whole dept wasn't investigated top to bottom,
Sadly, current practice attracts what kind of mindset to this job?
Enough said? - Tearlock, on 10/10/2007, -0/+88Man, I called this as the story broke about the cop being sacked. I knew this guy was in for harassment. Considering that you'll harrassed just for walking into a precinct and asking for a misconduct complaint form. Getting an actual officer relieved of duty is asking for worse. You're going to have officers following you everywhere waiting for a minor infraction, with hand resting gently on the handle of their gun.
- vwvan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+71I'm calling the St.Louis police department right now. You want to harass my client? Can you say flashmob? How many lights do you have on that telephone of yours? How many switches do you have in your station? How about this. The 55 STL PD numbers are here:
http://www.slmpd.org/directory/index.htm
If your last name starts with an A, choose numbers 1 or 2 in the list.
If your last name starts with a B, choose numbers 3 or 4 in the list, etc.
Be courteous and ask to speak with someone about the harassment of a citizen who reported unethical police conduct. Keep your message short and to the point. Say, "I am not sure who to talk to but I am calling to request that you do not further harass Brett Darrow an upstanding citizen who recently filmed one of your officers acting inappropriately. Otherwise thank you for your service to the community. Goodbye and Good Luck."
If you dial *67 before you call, your number will not be displayed to the non-emergency department in the list. - Nossie, on 10/10/2007, -2/+66so stalking 20 year old men is not pathetic?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+64As a person who legally carries a gun, I am quite familiar with police harassment. I am a police-supporting conservative, but I carry a tiny voice recorder and switch it on whenever I see an officer approaching me. This sort of thing should be pursued to the very top of the department. And to blame it on the kid is not a valid argument. This guy might be a total jerk, but the police are supposed to be trained to deal with people like that.
- Fordi, on 10/10/2007, -6/+68Mmmm.. check that CopTalk link. There's a vote of no confidence going on concerning both the Mayor of St Louis and the police chief.
Darrow may be under scrutiny by the cops, but that will pass. Meanwhile, the corrupt in charge are in hot water, and the infamous ***** Kuehnlein has been fired. Overall, justice is winning. - dougbell, on 10/10/2007, -3/+64Cops are the biggest outlaws around.
- Tearlock, on 10/10/2007, -2/+59I's not pathetic what he kid is doing. It's revelatory.
"Who watches the watchmen?" - cl0r0x70, on 10/10/2007, -0/+55This looks to me like almost every cop I've ever dealt with.
If you don't immediately surrender your rights to privacy and silence, they honestly believe they have the right to harass you. - theworldisflat, on 10/10/2007, -3/+55Not to bright are they? I've got a family full of officers, and all of them are appauled about what happened to this kid. It's total and utter *****.
- brstilson, on 10/10/2007, -1/+53Wait a second....a police officer actually got FIRED for corruption...in a country where they are rewarded with paid leave when they kill an innocent bystander or use excessive force? I find that hard to believe.
- NnyCW, on 10/10/2007, -0/+50Real crime is dangerous to fight.
- rarson, on 10/10/2007, -1/+48"Darrow may be under scrutiny by the cops, but that will pass."
That's a pretty big leap of faith, don't you think? Especially considering that these cops shouldn't have been acting this way in the first place. - bratterscain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+46The good thing though is with the publicity, if this guy is ever charged for anything by the local LE, then it will more than likely taken with a grain of salt since most officials there probably know this guy's situation. Also with a good lawyer and the provided evidence, if he truly is innocent of a crime, he could probably make good with a counter-suit. But with that said, it sucks to be in this guy's shoes, regardless.
- RabidAngel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+43God DAMN I am sick of this mentality among law enforcement and government officials! Someone remind me what country this is because I really can't tell any more. What level of complete and utter stupidity must a "law enforcement" officer reach down to, that he would be angry at Brett Darrow for showing what a sad little, power-tripping prick the officer in the original video was. He was a pathetic excuse for a cop, as is anyone who tries to defend him.
- umdigger, on 10/10/2007, -1/+43The cops will probably just quit or get fired and go work for Blackwater. They would fit in well there.
- Rapter09, on 10/10/2007, -3/+44I'll bet somebody dinner and a movie that they arrest him for unlawfully recording a police officer.
- WarPirate, on 10/10/2007, -6/+46Well Duh your insurance expired. Do you think the insurance company would have covered you had you got in an accident? Next time dont let it expire and you wont have to worry about getting that ticket.
- moofer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+39Don't say that to Ghandi
- an0nymous, on 10/10/2007, -1/+38So spell it out for us Ryan. What's the kid doing?
- SnuKs, on 10/10/2007, -2/+39I really wished all those cops on their little forum read digg once and while and saw this. Sorry guy but this is NATIONAL news now. What are you gonna do now? The whole internet is on your asses.
You guys think you're hot ***** for having a gun and a badge huh? - Alphateam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+36How is it pathetic that a person is filming the harassment he is getting?
Because he is a citizen VS a cops word he loses.
If he didn't have the original tape no one would have believed him.
I know you will never respond to this post, because you just said it to get dugg down. It is just an ignorant statement. - troye, on 10/10/2007, -6/+42The funny thing is the guy is not even black O,0
- olenick, on 10/10/2007, -4/+39Sounds like it's time for a federal takeover of the St. Louis PD, which is clearly out of control. Let the FBI sort out who needs to go and who can stay. These officers openly condone false arrest, perjury, retaliation, theft, and a host of other crimes that makes them sound like common street thugs. As for Kuehnlein, the missing videotape makes a compelling obstruction case.
- hinchb, on 10/10/2007, -1/+36Yeah ***** him for not doing anything illegal and then getting harrassed by the cops. ***** citizens.
- evernew, on 10/10/2007, -2/+36"Some $40,000 in cash turned up "missing" from the police evidence room on September 17."
How does something turn up missing? - shitforbrains, on 10/10/2007, -1/+35When our idiotic legislators create so many laws that everyone breaks the law every day, then we have police who enforce the law arbitrarily. They can't arrest everyone, so they just arrest the people they don't like. That breeds the arrogance that allows them to think they're judges and jury too.
- urbal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+33Remember, these are the guys who barely passed High School.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+33Digg is like Sauron !
- rarson, on 10/10/2007, -1/+32You'd think they'd have more important things to do than take out a personal vendetta against one of the taxpayers that funds their paychecks whom they are there to "protect and serve."
- spyrochaete, on 10/10/2007, -0/+31BoingBoing featured a fascinating and disturbing website where cops tattle on other cops who gave them legitimate tickets for breaking the law. For a real eye opener check out the "Dick of the month" feature - every one I've read features a cop who knowingly broke the law and berates a fellow officer for ticketing him.
BoingBoing story - http://www.boingboing.net/2007/09/25/cops-complain ...
Cops Writing Cops website - http://www.copswritingcops.com/home.html - spoonmaniac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+31"What kind of dumbasses are running the PD out there?"
Apparently sex offenders get to run the PD out there
http://www.ksdk.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid ... - an0nymous, on 10/10/2007, -0/+30Okay I can see asking someone parked in a lot at night if everything is okay. But in the original video the cop went balisitic threatened to make charges up when the kid asked him a few simple questions in a non confrontational manner. Don't tell me you are defending that officer's actions. They are indefensible.
So is this, btw. - an0nymous, on 10/10/2007, -2/+32Harrassment is illegal. It would be illegal for a citizen to some and stalk you. It's much worse when it's a cop.
But you know this, don't you. - AliasHandler, on 10/10/2007, -0/+29That's why he used a camera and the internet, and now all this scrutiny is on police tactics nationwide, and it's becoming a mass national dialogue. You're seeing the change begin.

What is Digg?
