A "premium" service catering to the needs of the useless special interest groups. Bunch of whiny *****. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+45This has NOTHING to do with free speech, but everything to do with (private) censorship. The two are not one and the same. Learn what these terms are before you use them in your arguments.
If someone pays you to talk to an audience, and then objects to what you have to say, they have every right to stop paying to for talking. Common ***** sense. - sTiVo, on 10/11/2007, -16/+60True, but if their free speech started costing them listeners (i.e. ears hearing their commercials) then they should fire them as a reasonable business decision.
- NICU, on 10/11/2007, -31/+66Its not a matter of free speech. They're not getting in any legal trouble or fined. Ever since Howard Stern came to Sirius XM hasn't been growing anywhere near as quickly. O&A were syndicated on regular radio and had a zero rating in one market and bad ratings in many other markets. XM probably realized that O&A aren't good enough to be a flag-ship product like Stern. Like them or hate them their rating weren't good, and they're not in any legal trouble. So shut up with the 'free speech' garbage, they were free to say what they said, but that doesn't mean they aren't held accountable for stupidity and bad ratings.
- rholloway, on 10/11/2007, -9/+38@NICU
In fairness to the 0.0 in Vegas....if you start in the market on Thursday and the book closes Friday, you'll post a 0.0. That's essentially what happened here.
You Stern fans have to put that into perspective. EVERY SHOW STARTS AT 0.0. - JackPallance, on 10/11/2007, -3/+28"very reliable sources say that they have been fired"
Sources that are so reliable that they must remain anonymous? No confirmation from a second source?
Nope. Nothing wrong here. I have no trouble believing this. Nothing at all wrong with this picture.
From a site called "*****.com"
Nothing suspicious at all... - neeyo, on 10/11/2007, -5/+23What is the problem here?? XM owns their own sattelites and "airwaves" and the should be able to do whatever they want with them. I have no problem with NBC or ABC controlling the shows they make or limiting their own content.
What I do have a problem with is the government stepping in and preventing content from a show being broadcast. But XM is a company that does it's own production - how the hell do you think you have the right to control them? Let them control themselves. Jeez. - dsbaehler, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19XM is a company and they own their broadcast signal. There is no such thing as free speech when it comes to that. Free speech and censorship is only a relevent when it comes to preventing your personal right to give your opinion. There is no guarentee that you can do it over a privately owned network. You can't force XM to view your opinions. That's what the street corner is for.
People need to actually read the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

- CaptMonkey, on 10/11/2007, -14/+28Well, hopefully they wanted to get rid of a ton of subscribers too. I'm canceling if they get fired. So much for uncensored radio.
- jait, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Clarification: Freedom of Speech means freedom from government retribution of things you say. If I say something that my boss doesn't like, my boss can fire me. If I say something the local mayor doesn't like, I can't be sent to jail for it. Gross generalization, I know. You're all smart enough to know the difference.
- Subiklim, on 10/11/2007, -7/+19Yes. Let's force PRIVATE companies to uncensor THEIR own station!
That will show them a thing or two about freedom! - krock918316, on 10/11/2007, -8/+19Canceled my sub yesterday.......
- lohphat, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12I canceled all 5 radios.
It's not about O&A, as I never listened to their show. The issue is bait and switch: Come experience uncensored radio....until we reprimand those whose speech we don't like.
*That's* the reason to cancel. - totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9"Visit the site not only if you are fan of O&A, but a fan of free speech. Censorship must end NOW."
dsbaehler, exactly. O & A do have as much freedom of speech as anyone else, but that doesn't mean XM has to foot the bill for it regardless of content. (unless their contract specifically mentions it-which is a legal issue, not a free speech issue). - SwissCamel, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12I think we've all thought 'yeah, ***** the x-men' at some point in time, so I don't see what the website has to do with all of this.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Right to free speech doesn't guarantee you an audience. O&A just need to find an outlet who feels that what they do is in line with the positioning of the company. That wouldn't be XM, since they wish to sell to a lot of people who find what O&A did repulsive.
Free market cuts both ways. When the customer has the ability to choose, corporations have to care whether they are presenting a product their customers will choose. For the broad market, the answer to this O&A stuff is "no".
O&A probably need to find a more specialized outlet, in essence a company who makes money off of O&As antics instead of trying to surpress them. - KatieBee, on 10/11/2007, -10/+18where is the SAME outrage about hate/violent speech against women here like there was against Imus?!
where is al sharpton thumping his racial drum towards these comments toward THESE american women when he was so full of righteous indignation after the comments towards the rutgers african american women?
this speech was so much more deplorable and violent, and everyone glosses over it because it doesn't suit their agenda.
shame. - iceperson, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10(Guest) Homeless Charlie - "I tell you what...what's the George Bush b---h on Rice...Condoleezza Rice?"
O&A - "Condoleezza Rice"
Charlie - "I'd love to f--- that bitch dude" (laughter)
Charlie - "She's the F---in man"
O&A - "yeah"
Charlie - "I'd F...that bitch...."
O&A - "I just imagine the horror in Condoleezza Rice's face...."
- "(laughter) ..... as she realizes what's going on"
- "...as you were just holding her down and F'n her."
Charlie - "punch her all the F'n face, shut the F--- up bitch"
O&A - "that's exactly what I meant"
(laughter in background) - mjenkins, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Truth is, we don't really know what has gone on behind the scenes in the verbal communications between O&A and XM. There may have been more to this than a simple censorship issue.
- rholloway, on 10/11/2007, -10/+17you're missing the point. I pay for a service that XM promises to deliver. They're not delivering.
So I cancel...but what about the refund for the hardware I was forced to purchase? Either way, removing uncensored content from an "uncensored" channel, in this case, is fraud. - brundlefly76, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7"Censorship must end NOW."
Well, at least on mediums specifically advertised as being uncensored. - starcrunchfx, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9@SwissCamel
Ya, especially Rogue. - rholloway, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7XM should man up and remove all xL content from it's lineup. Call and say you're offended by something you heard on Raw and demand that the content be removed immediately. Not blocked...REMOVED,
- cliffdavis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Sharpton attempted to get outraged. He asked XM to meet with him so he could get that outrage moving. XM told him to go screw.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5rylinkus:
You made your decision to jump in. They don't owe you the price of the hardware back unless they guaranteed you 2 years of O&A (and given that O&A could die of a heart attack at any day, I'm sure they didn't guarantee that).
I do understand canceling your subscription. Why pay for something that isn't providing what you want? - MrDys, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Comedian Louis CK's take on the whole debacle is rather interesting:
http://www.louisck.com/welcome.htm - SpaceParanoids, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9You're going to have to show us where in your XM service agreement the provider guaranteed to deliver specific content.
- idconvict, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5@rholloway

I'm pretty sure that isn't true. Ratings are based on the average rating over a certain period of time, that's why you generally have wait a while to get a new show's true numbers.
from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arbitron
"The Arbitrends, despite being mid-term indicators, reflect the entire three-month block leading up to them."
So it's impossible to post a 0.0 unless the station was airing static before you, or you suck for a sufficiently long period of time - thatsmyaibo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Well Jim Norton is one of my favorite comedians iceperson. You don't have to be a total bitter ***** about it.
- PunkRockRalph, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5this isnt exactly atypical behavior of them. thats what their paid to do.
isnt this the third time theyve been fired? - zombieklone, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Good, I finally found someone who has satellite radio ratings. Please give me and others a breakdown of the ratings. Please let us all know, because I have been unable to find ratings for satellite radio. Thank You
- CaseyUCF, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9"So I cancel...but what about the refund for the hardware I was forced to purchase"
Sell it on ebay you ***** cry baby - SpaceParanoids, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7What kind of outrage were you looking for? Should Sharpton demand they get fired twice?
- nodong, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7A homeless person who was a guest on the show made those comments, not Opie and Anthony. Are you going to fire the homeless person?
- OswaldKenobi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Suspension is the correct course of action in this situation. Termination of employment going far beyond the punishment fitting the crime. The bit was in bad taste, but did not harm anybody. The stunt that pushed them to XM was far worse than this one. This is setting a dangerous precedent in subscription driven media.
- rholloway, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5@idconvict
The show in Vegas that preceded the Opie and Anthony Show did indeed have a 0.0 in the book prior. - homerj1965, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4One problem with that, they will have no subscribers. I canceled my 3 subscriptions. PESTS UNITE!!
- praxisseizure, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4people are voting with their dollars. and voting verbally on this digg.
- twinklyJesus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3IF He refused to allow the retarded guests on his show, you'd criticize him for discriminating. WTF He let's the guys come on and make fools out of themselves. He also creates a revenue stream for these guys because they can go do appearances and make lots of money, as opposed to sitting home collecting SSI or disability checks.
They come on when they want to. And they want to be on the air more than Howard lets them. - LaSepultura, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6First they came for Imus, and I didn't care because I wasn't an Imus fan.
Then they came for O&A, and I didn't care because I wasn't an O&A fan.
Then they came for Stern, and by then nobody was left to care. - redmenace, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Rights do come with some responsibilities. You can't yell "fire" in a theater filled with people even if you think its the funniest joke of all time.
Why anyone would waste time defending their right to make rape jokes is beyond me. They had a great platform to do brave stuff with. Instead they decided to piss it way with a bunch of material that massaged their own egos and targets 14-year-olds.
They screwed themselves and their getting what they deserve. - Nightfall, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Buried as inaccurate. No official word has been given so until that happens, I am still thinking they will be back on XM in 30 days.
- sillybuns, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I've read a lot of inaccurate comments here about ratings and the like. Like O&A or not, the fact is that they have the most widely listened to channel on XM, by their VP's (Eric Logan) own words. O&A make a lot of money for XM via their show being broadcast on a number of CBS stations. O&A have done and said much worse on their show before and have never been reprimanded like this. I suspect this may be related to the Sirius merger and the total lack of embrace toward O&A thats been shown since the announcement. I personally think that the merger cannot be good for consumers. We have enough monopolies already.
I seriously worry that this is really the end of their XM deal. I cannot think of a mainstream DJ coming back after a suspension like this, especially recently... IMUS, JV & Elvis in NY... whether the current rumor is true or not is likely irrelevant for the future of their show, the outcome seems inevitable.
I too cancelled my XM sub and wont give them another $.01 until they're back on. This is the ENTIRE reason I subscribe to satellite radio, cable TV, HBO, etc... I WANT to listen to stuff that pushes the envelope. its an adult channel targeted at adult viewers, what else are people expecting?!!?!?!??!?!!? - evildeadxsp, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4mirror -
http://duggmirror.com/politics/Sources_Say_Opie_Anthony_fired_from_XM_Satellite_Radio/ - Devrdander, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Uptown has it right, this was more of a political move. The new proposed Ruler of Xmirius is buddy buddy with Stern not to mention Stern hates them. They don't need 2 shock jock channels once merged and O&A's fans also have been stirring the merger pot by protesting with the FCC. They don't want the merger to go through because it will probably mean the end of O&A, I just hope the cancellations are putting enough of a dent in their numbers to make them feel the pressure. O&A will be back, just give them time.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3 even worse was the JV and Elvis firing in NYC last month. stupid dumb phone call to a Chinese restaurant that some local Asian group thought they could exploit in the midst of the Imus thing.
It's getting ridiculous. - uptown, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@zombieklone: The lobyists for terrestrial radio (who have been actively opposing the merger of the two companies) will make sure that the politicians deciding on the merger hear the excerpts. NAB (The National Association of Broadcasters) also funded their own study which conveniently came to the conclusion they've been pushing saying that the merger would be a bad thing. This whole thing is about money. Nothing else.
- Devrdander, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7@NICU
Howard gave out wrong numbers on his show, they had a 0.0 like mentioned in a new market but they have steadily been climbing the FM ratings. As far as Satellite is concerned, they have more listeners than Howard. Sure Howard drew subscribers to Sirius but he still reaches a much smaller footprint than O&A. And heres some links to actually back up what I am stating.
http://www.orbitcast.com/archives/opie-anthony-ratings-rise-for-cbs-radio.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_FM
When Howard left, Roth tanked for FreeFM/CBS and sent the ratings down to near 0, O&A did so well they put them on in 20 markets and actually brought numbers UP since they have been on. - mlock2k, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Have these guys said anything funny ? I think they might have went a little too far saying what they said. But if people dont like it why cant they turn it off ?
