- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -30/+421I knew when I heard it that this was coming - there is no way the Wilson sisters would stand for the misuse of their music! Good on ya!
- inactive, on 12/08/2008, -28/+294You know, after I heard this played at the convention, I was wondering if this would happen. I can't imagine feminists like Ann and Nancy supporting the Republicans.
How embarrassing. It seems there's just no end to McCain's blunders. - inactive, on 09/05/2008, -21/+259They didn't clear the music? Seriously? Damn, that's amateur.
Maybe they were going to do that after they vet the VP candidates.... - snowshoeless, on 09/05/2008, -11/+206Wait a second here. If I'm a huge political party using an unlicensed song for a nationally televised convention, I get a C&D letter with a promise of "oops we won't do it again" -- but if I post my 3 year old dancing to a 30 second clip of a Prince song, I get sued.
Sounds fair to me! - jkbowman, on 09/05/2008, -30/+208Another example of how the McCain team fails to think. I swear, they just don't get it.
Thank you, Ann and Nancy! - JenniferInMO, on 09/05/2008, -28/+203Love you Ann and Nancy!
- melpomene1, on 09/05/2008, -31/+181Another example of Republicans disregarding the law -- this time, copyright law.
- DreKor, on 09/05/2008, -20/+157You live by the DMCA, you die by the DMCA. Welcome to karma.
- Webnower, on 09/05/2008, -27/+96I wouldn't want my music to be associated with that dickwad either.
- ivanmarsh, on 09/05/2008, -12/+73Isn't it fittingly ironic that the morons would choose a theme song for Palin that's about someone who will lie to get what they want and then ***** you over and leave?
I guess they knew as much about the song as they knew about Palin before they picked her.
Damn the GOP is stupid.
When the real thing won't do the trick... - Cuchanu, on 09/05/2008, -9/+69From now on, only country music. That way they can be sure they won't object to it's use. Yes I am generalizing.
- twiztidsinz, on 09/05/2008, -11/+67"sharing" is for personal use... not public performance..
- JekJob, on 09/05/2008, -18/+69They have quite a history of stealing music.
- MisterChirish, on 09/05/2008, -10/+56Didn't Van Halen just ask them to stop using "Right Now" in their campaigns, as well?
LOL - Nobody wants to be associated with the Republican campaigns - they're like the smelly kid in school... - Icebird, on 09/05/2008, -19/+65Who's the Barracuda NOW?
- sneaker98, on 09/05/2008, -9/+52There was an article up that the Republicans received a million dollars in donations after her speech, correct?
Part of her speech (her introduction, I do believe) was Barracuda.
Thus, there was monetary gain from the use of their song, as Barracuda was part of that presentation.
In a word: illegal. This is not a case of pirating for personal use. - pintomp3, on 09/05/2008, -6/+49reminds me of when reagan used springsteen's "born in the USA" despite the fact that the song was was pretty much the anti-thesis of everything reagan stood for.
- MediaWeasel, on 09/05/2008, -19/+60The McCain campaign has done this before - they used the old "we are not worthy" and got stung for that too. Just underpins the fact that there is nothing original about that bunch of cheats and liars.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -14/+55This is like the third time the McCain campaign has been hit with a cease-and-desist notice from artists for using their music without permission now.
- ScrewedThePooch, on 09/05/2008, -22/+61***** THE RIAA! ***** THE GOP! I don't know which one to hate more now. This is hilarious.
- sugarazor, on 09/05/2008, -8/+41It's definitely an appropriate song to use for the addition of Palin to the ticket:
"You lying so low in the weeds, I bet you gonna ambush me"
"when the real thing won't do the trick, you better make up something quick." - lowtolerance, on 09/05/2008, -9/+41I think their new theme song should be "Master of Puppets"
- BobSconce, on 09/05/2008, -5/+36Pffft. Campaigns are generally very careful about licensing works that they use in their commercials and on-stage. They use professional agencies to do this stuff.
In this case, the song Barracuda is part of ASCAP's catalog and can be licensed through ASCAP without any involvement of the songwriter. It's part of the trade-off -- the songwriter get easy licensing revenue, but gives up control on who can play it. Now, it looks like the Wilsons are having it both ways. Guarantee that they won't turn down the ASCAP check when it comes, though.
This is just a cheap publicity stunt. - RadiatedAnt, on 09/05/2008, -16/+45I'd never thought I'd say this but his is the only time I approve Sony's cease and desist anything!
- charm803, on 09/05/2008, -11/+39Isn't this the third time already?
Why didn't they learn from the first TWO TIMES? - wwwonka, on 09/05/2008, -5/+29WOW! That same thought crossed my mind too when I heard it at the end of his speech. Good to know the Wilson sisters and Sony did something about it.
Now if we can get whoever holds the copyright to the term "community organizer" to do a cease and desist to the McPalin camp. - Schmapdi, on 09/05/2008, -6/+29Didn't Mccain already have to stop using a song by John Mellencamp too?
- sneaker98, on 09/05/2008, -3/+26@DivisibleByZero: If you don't understand the difference between pirating and pirating for huge monetary gain, there is very little point in responding to you.
But, I shall try to show you an example. Lets say I pirate Barracuda via Frostwire for the sole intent on uploading it to my mp3 player and enjoying the tune.
Net gain: $0 (and perfectly legal here in Canada)
Now, lets say I'm tasked with playing Barracuda at the RNC's VP speech, and lets make the positive assumption that I actually purchase the album in question.
-$20 for the cd.
+$1,000,000 in donations as a direct result of my presentation.
Net gain: $999,980
Now, lets include happiness as the arbitrary variable 'h' - therefore your conclusion is as follows:
h + 0 = h + 999,980
And after doing a little basic algebra:
h - h + 0 = 999,980
0 = 999,980
And since 0 != 999,980, I can only assume that you're full of *****. - akshay626, on 09/05/2008, -18/+40***** THE RIAA?
- charm803, on 09/05/2008, -5/+26All these blunders makes you think:
Is his staff doing it on purpose? This is the third song already! - BossKey, on 09/05/2008, -4/+23The minute they started playing it, I wondered if they had permission and I looked up the lyrics.
And then I smiled, because they obviously are into the title and the killer guitar riff, but not what the lyrics say. Is this supposed to represent Palin?
"So this aint the end -
I saw you again today
I had to turn my heart away
Smiled like the sun -
Kisses for real
And tales - it never fails!...
...If the real thing dont do the trick
You better make up something quick
You gonna burn burn burn burn it to the wick
Ooooooh, barracuda" - blackdaisies, on 09/05/2008, -5/+23And it isn't the first time either. Ask McCain about his relationship with John Cougar Mellencamp
- VeritasAequitas, on 09/05/2008, -5/+23Dixie Chicks would object, they caused all kinds of hoop la for talking trash about Bush. It was kind of funny to follow actually. Being that I'm an atheist Libertarian that lives and grew up in the country and likes country music.
I have issues. - nickymouse, on 09/05/2008, -0/+17If the convention center pays BMI and ASCAP the yearly fees, it doesn't matter. They paid for the right.
- tracker1, on 09/05/2008, -0/+17He had permission.. from ASCAP/BMI who licenses the music for venues like this.. they aren't legally required to ask the artist's permission, because the artist gave up those rights to the mafiAA cartel.
- Speed, on 09/05/2008, -3/+20They sent a C&D, so it sounds like they asked the RNC to stop using the song in the same way MasterCard asks me to pay my bill at the end of each month.
- Speed, on 09/05/2008, -2/+19When the ***** did he say he downloaded it? Don't accuse wildly like that.
- ProjectGSX, on 09/05/2008, -0/+16Im so conflicted. :/
- Anpheus, on 09/05/2008, -2/+18Playing it to an audience constitutes distribution (technically, performance.) And so if they hadn't paid for that right, they did break copyright law.
- absurdist, on 09/05/2008, -4/+19massaks, if you have any evidence that anyone here has downloaded a ***** thing, submit it to the proper authorities. Oh wait, that's right, you don't. You're simply a hit-and-run troll for the McCain campaign, as evidenced by your comment history and join date.
- Tribis, on 09/05/2008, -2/+17Digg now cares about copyright law? I just hope that the average Digg user is not taken seriously anywhere but on Digg.
- myhandleondigg, on 09/05/2008, -13/+28No wonder these politicians are so bitter and out of touch.. all of their idols publicly condemn and threaten to sue them.
- DangerCollie, on 09/05/2008, -7/+21The McCain campaign should stick to country. I think they should have played "Why don't we get drunk and screw".
- IphtashuFitz, on 09/05/2008, -3/+17***** THE GOP!
- chinolofus, on 09/05/2008, -2/+16did someone mention a dancing 3 yr old?
