- redwards, on 12/18/2007, -19/+218God is so all-powerful that he needs douchebags like Tony Snow to defend him. Dear me. Omnipotence ain't what it's cracked up to be.
- Calann, on 12/18/2007, -13/+171December 25th was traditionally the date of the feast of Mithras, a Persian god. Early Christians often co-opted Pagan holidays to convert them to Christianity while maintaining the celebrations.
If anything, you can say there's a war on Mithras. - AriaStar, on 12/18/2007, -13/+101If God's so real, let him defend himself and prove to us non-Christians that he's real.
- Big1984Brother, on 12/18/2007, -16/+95It's really a shame that here, in the 21st century, people still defend iron-age mythology as fact. And, even worse, people who put the gospels and the Torah in the same category as the Iliad and Epic of Gilgamesh are viewed as "unpatriotic”, “amoral”, and “un-American”.
- inactive, on 12/18/2007, -10/+77War on god? Well, war on ignorance maybe, you cannot have a war on something that only exists in some peoples minds. If anything its a war on organized religion.
- CannedMango, on 12/18/2007, -7/+71Man, Christians are insecure.
- Dumbledorito, on 12/18/2007, -2/+65Yes, those atheists have certainly won their war on religion. That's why I passed all those tax-free piles of stonework with the spires and stained glass builit next to all those houses with creches out in the front yard while hearing "Silent Night" over the local radio station.
Jeeze. Pick another non-issue, why don't you? And you know, would it be so bad if Christmas didn't start until after Thanksgiving, like it used to, instead of beginning about three weeks before Halloween? - hawkeye17, on 12/18/2007, -2/+58Don't feed the troll.
- omnithought, on 12/18/2007, -4/+54And yet they ignore the war on science.
- PATSCRU, on 12/18/2007, -16/+65strangely, that's Ron Paul had a very similar statement when he said "there is a war on religion in this country" I guess he's not to different from neocons afterall.
- inactive, on 12/18/2007, -2/+46Which part is true again?
- ahoy, on 12/18/2007, -8/+49If he's defending God against the college campuses across America, where is God to defend him from cancer?
ouch, that was a low blow by me... but come on Tony, get real. - Trublmakr, on 12/18/2007, -1/+35As an Atheist, I would have no problem with any of the things you've suggested. I would be happier still if my kid was free to attend his after school Atheist club, discuss atheism with a friend and NOT pray during school.
- thebellmaster1x, on 12/18/2007, -3/+36Lol.
That's all I can say because I know that no factual argument I could make would penetrate your skull. - ahoy, on 12/18/2007, -0/+32so... a cool dude named Elijah killed a bunch of innocent people for not putting their faith in something arguably ridiculous and we're supposed to look for guiding morals in that act?
- Urusai, on 12/18/2007, -2/+33Interesting how neocons equate any sort of disagreement with a violent and deadly contest to subjugate the other party.
- D4N747, on 12/18/2007, -6/+37I'm not positive here, and correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it virtually impossible to have a war...on an idea? Thoughts are exactly that, thoughts; declaring war on one would make for a very difficult battle to fight. Oh sure, "War on Terrorism": Has America gotten anywhere on that in the past what has it been now, 6 years? Aside from a few thousand dead people and endless sensationalist media reports?
- thebellmaster1x, on 12/18/2007, -7/+37The relevant statement:
http://www.lewrockwell.com/paul/paul148.html
And, LordSkywalker, an atheist standpoint is the only neutral and appropriate standpoint for a government to take on religion: a lack of it. I don't care if a student organizes an after-school prayer session--as long as it's not sponsored and paid for by the school, i.e., by my tax money. Same goes your third example, and I'm not about to limit friends talking to each other about religion.
What's wrong is when the GOVERNMENT tries to tell you that one religion is better, when the GOVERNMENT displays one religion in a public place and nowhere else.
Paul, in that column, says that a secular nation is "a nation that is legally and culturally biased against Christianity." That's absolutely incorrect. A secular nation is a nation that respects all religions by not showing bias for any one religion, whether it be Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, what have you.
Don't act like you're some warrior in the "struggle against religion." It's a struggle against discrimination. - banmaster, on 12/18/2007, -8/+38Here's a little something to think about, all of the points listed below are from religions and times way before Christianity. Notice the similarities? This alone pokes holes in religion, in particular Christianity.
Horus (3000bc) (Egypt)

-resurrected - Spytap, on 12/18/2007, -1/+30Doesn't take much to win that war. Rational thought and the ability to think past a third grade level pretty much obliterates it.
- cranium, on 12/18/2007, -4/+32Tony Snow had cancer, where did he go for a cure? To church? No?
He believes in belief itself, not in God. - inactive, on 12/18/2007, -2/+30"War on Mithras"? Now THAT'S funny. I gotta call O'Leilly.
- y0ssar1an, on 12/18/2007, -1/+29utter nonsense. no atheist thinks that it's ok to go around behaving badly as if there were no consequences. what we do believe is that there is such a thing as right and wrong, and it doesn't matter what religion you are. my sense of morality has nothing to do with whether i believe in an invisible man in the sky.
- quaxon, on 12/18/2007, -3/+30Finally, a war i can back!
- Bartboy919, on 12/18/2007, -2/+29After reading the article, I saw this:
"Most noticeably, however, the once commonplace refrain of “Merry Christmas” has been replaced by the vague, ubiquitous “Happy Holidays.” But what holiday? Is Christmas some kind of secret, a word that cannot be uttered in public? Why have we allowed the secularists to intimidate us into downplaying our most cherished and meaningful Christian celebration?"
Sounds like he is channeling Bill O'Reilly when he says that, gives me mixed feelings about Ron Paul. - 3tcp, on 12/18/2007, -2/+28There's an entire subculture of christians who surround themselves with other christians and have no idea how to relate to the rest of the world. In their opinion, anyone who disagrees with them outside of their subculture is attacking the thing that binds them together, their religion.
Many Christians have become so isolated within this social group that they end up demonizing those outside which leads to further isolation. Most of these people are conservatives anyway and this kind of rhetoric is little more than an attempt to motivate these people to vote. This is a common tactic and people with similar political views that are already organized into a subculture are often motivated to political action by people claiming that their subculture will suffer if they don't.
Modern politics is most concerned with getting people who agree into the voting booth, convincing people that you're right comes second. This is why polarizing issues like abortion and affirmative action are always brought up even though it's impossible for significant change to occur because people are equally divided. - thebellmaster1x, on 12/18/2007, -2/+28His point is that he's making a joke, and you obviously didn't get it.
- Chandon, on 12/18/2007, -0/+25Mithras? Bah! I'm celebrating Yule - just like everyone else with a decorated evergreen tree.
- Betrayer, on 12/18/2007, -4/+28RELIGION = WAR ... lets stop the wars and erase god.
- Fordi, on 12/18/2007, -2/+26Why, you expect a liberal to yell at a dog for barking? Ooh, christians are extremely defensive about their shaky-ass faith. News at 11.
- zmjone2992, on 12/18/2007, -4/+28more like a war on non-christians.
- tylerjames, on 12/18/2007, -0/+24hahahaha
That's a perfect picture of morality if I ever saw one. If you require evidence before believing in the existence of our god then we'll just send some "cool dude" to ***** kill you and everyone that thinks like you and that'll put an end to the debate right there. Eventually all of these "show me evidence" types will either be dead or will have learned to STFU and go along with it.
That'll prove that our god is real for sure! - inactive, on 12/18/2007, -7/+31His colon cancer has spread to his brain ... mere inches away.
- toddcat, on 12/18/2007, -5/+29Any statistical or ANY evidence-by department-ANYTHING, Mr. Snow? Yeah. That's what I thought.
- bjornski, on 12/18/2007, -1/+21Maybe Tony needs to send $100,000 to a televangelist for a prayer cloth. It'll cure his cancer, make him wealthy, fix his halitosis, and give him an extra 2 inches.
On TV they say it works. Damn near guarantee it.
Where's your faith, Tony? Buy a cloth. - Fordi, on 12/18/2007, -0/+20Trolls are desperate to push rational thought, not only out of government, but out of the public square. Trollism is all about bad behavior without consequences. Their worst sin is to be "intelligent," to hold trolls to some mental standard. But, if moderators exist, trolls will never escape their final judgment. So, like someone who won't go to a doctor because he fears he might have a deadly condition, they make believe there are no moderators, so they will be able to avoid their punishment. You just keep thinking that. Trolls get no diggs. That's why they're called trolls.
Fixed that for you.
That said, WOW, but you're out of your gourd.
Liberals, libertarians, and other rationally thinking individuals, are desperate to push religion out of the process of policy making. Why? Because the bible has shown time and time again to be REALLY BAD at it. We end up with social problems that just don't get solved, ignore problems that aren't directly addressed, and come up with really BAD ideas pulled from a combination of obscure bits of scripture and holy men's asses. It has nothing to do with some final judgement or reward.
Meanwhile, religion isn't the only error vector that comes with making policy for several hundred million people. There's also greed, ego, an a number of other deadly sins that religion fails utterly to make go away. Putting the assumption of 'moral christians' aside allows policy to be set to discourage self-dealing, cronism, etc.
In short, you have some crazy conspiracy theory about why secularists want a secular government, when in fact, it's just well-reasoned separation of church and state. You can HAVE God in the public forum. Just don't try and use yours to set policy or dictate research. It's not just bad manners, it's actually harmful. - aukxsona, on 12/18/2007, -1/+20Actually I would argue CHRISTIANS think they can do bad ***** and never worry because they are FORGIVEN! That makes the oh so special in God's eyes don't ya know....
- LBobRife, on 12/18/2007, -0/+19You might want to re-read what y0ssar1an wrote.
- joshuabowers, on 12/18/2007, -0/+19So, the only reason why you (hypothetically, naturally, given that you "do not subscribe to the beliefs of religion") would be moral is due to fear of Hell / loss of Heaven? How the ***** is that moral? That's the furthest thing away from sincerity ever conceived. It's like a young child holding still for an hour to get a candy; he isn't doing it because he wants to be nice to those around him, he is doing it to get the ***** candy.
Morality sans religion implies sincerity (or, at the very least, candy that is more immediately accessible and real). - manicleek, on 12/18/2007, -0/+18You have morals and do good deeds because you are afraid of being punished for not doing so, I am atheist, I have morals and do good deeds just because I want to.
That makes me better than you - inactive, on 12/18/2007, -4/+21The rest of us just want christians to shut the ***** up and keep it to themselves. there wouldnt be a "war on God" if the rest of us didnt have to deal with it.
- Sogui, on 12/18/2007, -2/+19Also (stupid edit timer): "Through perverse court decisions and years of cultural indoctrination, the elitist, secular Left has managed to convince many in our nation that religion must be driven from public view." ~Ron Paul
This is the same guy who had a parade float go down a street near where I live with a liberty bell wedged between the 10 commandments. In case you're wondering, the decision to remove the 10 commandments from courthouses and such is among those "perverse decisions" that Ron Paul is referring to.
You guys bash Tony Snow for his comments, but Ron Paul says the EXACT same thing and you have to start making excuses for him. - ZenMojo, on 12/18/2007, -0/+17Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa, New years, Solstice, occasionally Ramadan, Eid-Ul-Adha, Boxing Day, Volunteer Day, St. Nicholas Day, Pearl Harbor Day, Human Rights Day, Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Lucy Day, Maritime Day, Eggnog Day, Bill of Rights Day, just for starters.
Forgive us for not carrying a laundry list of holidays everywhere we go (by the way, half of those holidays were given the same treatment as Christmas in that controversial fluff vote last week, but the media loves focusing on the "shocking" stuff). - banmaster, on 12/18/2007, -0/+16Can you provide any independently verifyable sources for the event?
Because if (as I believe) its just a story in the Bible thats NOT proof!! Thats a fairy tale for stupid brainwashed bastards and their children!! - banmaster, on 12/18/2007, -0/+16So is anyone who deep down knows their beliefs are total *****, but who can never own up to it because they've spend so much of their time and money devoted to its cause!
- MadOtaku, on 12/18/2007, -2/+18You can't. The number of them motivated enough to vote tends to be greater that the number sane people motivated enough to vote.
- joshuabowers, on 12/18/2007, -0/+15Ad hominem: I cannot dispute someone's argument, ergo, I shall attack that person's credibility. Bravo, LoneRanger.
- XXXXXXXXXXXXXX, on 12/18/2007, -6/+21That's not what he said. He mentions that he saw the founding fathers envisioning a Christian nation, and he wants to keep it that way.
- chinaman9, on 12/18/2007, -3/+18W00t.. I can back a war against brainwashing and ignorance any day! Here's to a war on god!!!
- caboosemoose, on 12/18/2007, -1/+16That's almost a work of art. Nice trolling.
