- uptwolait, on 07/02/2009, -21/+336Give him hell, Helen.
- verticalconserv, on 07/02/2009, -6/+255Helen is a top notch journalist. She was tough and fair when Bush was in office and called him out all the time, and she is doing the same with Obama. She is a rare breed of journalist that is not right or left, she simply reports what she sees. We need more journalists like her and fewer news commentators.
- isgk, on 07/02/2009, -9/+219She goes much, much further than that page posts, here's a link to a transcript of the exchange: http://www.cnsnews.com/public/content/article.aspx ...
Helen Thomas told CNSNews.com that not even Richard Nixon tried to control the press the way President Obama is trying to control the press.
“Nixon didn’t try to do that,” Thomas said. “They couldn’t control (the media). They didn’t try.
“What the hell do they think we are, puppets?” Thomas said. “They’re supposed to stay out of our business. They are our public servants. We pay them.” - Salif, on 07/02/2009, -4/+189I agree with Helen Thomas, I voted for Obama, but this guiding of the media is *****. I'm glad at least someone in the media still cares.
- faskippy, on 07/02/2009, -16/+182A pile of poo is still a pile of poo, even if it wasn't the first one there.
- Waiting2awake, on 07/02/2009, -9/+163Actually a lot of people, Helen Thomas included, were against the Bush admin and questioned them about this all the time. There were Libertarians, liberals, anti-war folks, etc, etc, etc all against how Bush was secretive.
The only thing that has changed, is many of those that were against it when Bush was doing it, rightfully so, now have no issue that Obama is doing the same thing....
So really the question isn't "where were these people before", because we were there along side of you fighting them. The real question is why have some decided it isn't important anymore. It couldn't be because "their" guy is there? - inactive, on 07/02/2009, -50/+174I guess that makes it ok. You just don't get it. Obama himself said he wanted things open and transparent. He is being called out in his lie. This has nothing to do with you Bush. You look like a child when caught " you did it first" typical liberal crybaby.
- lapdogs, on 07/01/2009, -114/+209Where were these same Journalists complaining to Bush that he had pre-selected reporters / questions in a Press Conference before the Iraq War started?
Watch for yourself: Buying The War w/Bill Moyers
http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/btw/watch.html
Any of this come back to you Helen, along with the other Journalists at the Bush and Obama Press Conferences? - sodoh, on 07/02/2009, -29/+118OK if true this is a bad. But in all her years? Did we forget the last 8 years or something? Lets see if she gets moved to the back row and is never asked a question again like Bush did.
She is one of the few reporters to ask difficult questions regardless of who is in power. - Waiting2awake, on 07/02/2009, -29/+104I will be shocked if this stays on the FP, without being buried into oblivion.
- thcobbs, on 07/02/2009, -0/+70I will say this... at least she's consistent.
- rebrad, on 07/02/2009, -17/+76Anyone else think that Richard Gibbs looks and acts like the PC Guy in the Mac commercials? He's always making excuses and trying to sidestep the truth.
- Corvidae, on 07/02/2009, -4/+60But Clinton got a blowjob!
It doesn't matter what Obama said he wanted to change, he's continuing to use a tactic that BushCo started. Wasn't right then, isn't right now.
The sad truth is that it doesn't matter who the president is. If they've obtained a power for whatever reason, they won't give it up until it's taken away. - charlietuna, on 07/02/2009, -4/+60This thread starts out following the absurd notion that Helen Thomas was soft on Bush. Helen Thomas is a truly hard pressing serious intellectual journalist.
She is the last of the Mohicans. News today is all glorified plagiarism and recycled spin masquerading as analysis. - Waiting2awake, on 07/02/2009, -6/+60Not at all, transparency is an issue for everyone. Just as it was when Bush was hiding and obfuscating the truth. Why is it different now?
- inactive, on 07/02/2009, -4/+54Actually she was tough on Bush too. Remember when the Bush admin put Helen Thomas in the back row during press conferences. According to her it was "Because they don't like me...I ask too many questions." Of course that wasn't the reason that the Bush admin gave for moving her but that's another story.
- InetRoadkill, on 07/02/2009, -3/+53It's nice to see what a real journalist looks like. Go Helen!
The rest of the cowards and sycophants in the press corp could learn a thing a two from Helen. - WraTH017, on 07/02/2009, -2/+51Why is it shocking? Helen Thomas is not a shill for the White House. I'm a liberal, and I support Obama and I'm happy to see reporters take him and his administration to task when he needs to be.
God bless true and honest journalism. I don't care if my guy is in power damn it, he needs to be accountable for all his actions, as he promised. - appleofdischord, on 07/02/2009, -2/+46You shouldn't call names. I'm extremely liberal, and Obama's lack of transparency is one of the few things I am very disappointed in him for.
- Waiting2awake, on 07/02/2009, -1/+44The girl deserves more flowers.
- Frixionburne, on 07/02/2009, -1/+41I can't believe you actually called out Helen Thomas over inactivity during the bush administration. i don't have the motivation to go on youtube and find her Bush vids, but I know for a fact that she was being just as critical, if not more, with Bush and co.
- Haptick, on 07/02/2009, -5/+45I think you're exactly right; it's a "their" guy mentality that blinds them (democrats and republicans) to the fact that even attempting to control the press and obscuring facts from the public are two very wrong actions for any government to take. Governance isn't a sports game where you want your team win at any cost, but that's how most people seem to act.
- amynewyork4248, on 07/02/2009, -26/+65Another Obama fan, deflecting every single criticism by saying "the last guy was worse".
- deema1, on 07/02/2009, -5/+41Where the hell were you? I distinctly remember the press attacking Bush for planting questions.
- proliance, on 07/02/2009, -13/+48The media created this situation and now have the gall to complain about it? Only now that they are getting their toes stepped on by the White House press secretary do they see this as a problem.
Its the job of the media to provide us with information, especially about those who run our country. The way the media have fawned over Obama has encouraged him to act this way.
They created this problem and they can fix it. Stop being subservient and do your job. - insomniacal, on 07/02/2009, -18/+51You're right -- because two reporters failed to hold Bush accountable for the decision to invade Iraq, Obama is justified in reneging on his promise of openness and transparency.
So glad you cleared that up for us. Go, 'Bama! - bbjohnnyt, on 07/02/2009, -8/+41She may be an overt liberal, but it's good to see she's still a true old-school news reporter, unlike the majority of today's lib cheerleader pseudo-journalists.
- inactive, on 07/02/2009, -2/+34True, Bush had selective questions from pre-selected reporters every briefing. But that doesn't make it right.
However, the press corps should be held accountable for their lack of investigative journalism. If they are going to be whining like little children about not being picked, maybe they'll actually go out and uncover a real story. - methdwman3, on 07/02/2009, -13/+42Bush did it too! Bush did it too! When exactly will that get old?
- duncan202, on 07/02/2009, -16/+44If you respect her, and you seem to with your last sentence, then why doubt her? Perhaps despite what you want to think, Obama is actually worse than Bush in this respect.
- Charlotte_Web, on 07/02/2009, -1/+28Agreed... last administration, she was a constant thorn in Bush's side.
I may not agree with her politics, but I can definitely respect her for being consistent. - TheTaoOfBill, on 07/02/2009, -8/+34Look, just drop the "But but but...Bush did it!" Arguement.
I support Obama. I think he's doing a great job with the economy and with the middle east.
But transparency is ALWAYS a good thing. And the press getting a sack and asking tough questions is ALWAYS a good thing.
Stop using the "Bush did it" arguement. Do you really think it's a good thing to set the bar at the lowest possible level? - Skywise, on 07/02/2009, -13/+39B-B-B-But Bush!
- inactive, on 07/02/2009, -9/+35Bill Moyer is hilarious. I liked the part where he said
"What the conservative media did was easy to fathom; they had been cheerleaders for the White House from the beginning and were simply continuing to rally the public behind the President — no questions asked.
Even liberals concede that the media is much much more liberal. Nobody in the right mind can claim the media is conservative. In fact, it it wasn't for Fox News, the media would be completely liberal.
BUT, his point that the media is easily fooled is 100% correct. GW sold them on the war and Obama sold them on his candidacy. And just like it took them several years to get educated and oppose the war, it will take them several years to get educated and oppose Obama. Wait for it. - Loonacy, on 07/02/2009, -1/+26I think lapdogs was trying to point out the error of the statement "She says in all her years in the White House she's never seen anything like it.", and not so much trying to excuse what Obama has done.
As someone who voted for Obama and despised Bush, i really don't want him acting like Bush did, and i don't think it's any excuse to say "Bush did it too." - Waiting2awake, on 07/02/2009, -3/+28"The sad truth is that it doesn't matter who the president is. If they've obtained a power for whatever reason, they won't give it up until it's taken away."
- Sad but true. I wonder when we will start to look at that last part and remember the only people that can take it away from them, is "We the People", but until the people decide they are willing to risk something.... - Simon83, on 07/02/2009, -3/+27Two things:
1) Yes, Bush did hand pick reporters at times (which I don't agree with) but he never called up reporters the night before instructing them on what question to ask. This has been taken to a whole new level to push Obamacare. Even the lady with cancer, Debby Smith, in the townhall meeting was a plant (http://foxyurl.com/n9C). Helen Thomas is neither Dem nor Rep, she is reporter who has seen it all and been through it all and she is just telling it how it is.....“We have never had that in the White House....I’m amazed, I’m amazed at you people who called for openness and transparency…Calling reporters the night before, telling them they’re going to be called on — that’s shocking,”
2) as cuzaoperiwinkle pointed out Obama said he wanted more things open and transparent. This is a move in the complete opposite direction. Just another one of his lies to get everyone to vote for him - monvalley, on 07/02/2009, -14/+37Boy, the liberals on this thread are all OK with this since it is their man. How stupid. Government is supposed to be accountable to the people regardless of party. Vote them all out after one term and force them to be open and honest.
- SolitaireRose, on 07/02/2009, -2/+25Helen Thomas is one of the last few journalists in a sea of partisan models reading what was scripted for them. It's a damn shame that no one is following in her shoes.
- inactive, on 07/02/2009, -5/+27Haha. Cons are running Raw Story?!?!?!
- InetRoadkill, on 07/02/2009, -1/+22Sadly, the answer to her rhetorical question about whether the press corp are puppets is 'yes'. The media has become complacent, complicit, and frightened of the govt and the white house in particular.
I shudder to think what's going to happen to the press corp when Helen finally retires. - KahRahTay, on 07/02/2009, -1/+22not that its a bad thing, but i really am surprised by all of the positive comments about Helen Thomas here from the repubs after the treatment she gave bush.
during his presidency, fox and company talked about her like she was Satan incarnate, and it is really strange to see positive comments about her getting dugg up before the blue team makes it to this thread. That being said, it's always a good thing to have journalists willing to call out people on their side of the aisle when they don't come through on their promises. - ajaxandmanu, on 07/02/2009, -5/+26Sometimes, I guess you just don't have ALL the answers. If it were going to be really that open, they ought to have had a question board where questions could be voted up or down by the public - which would reflect the actua concerns of the public, and not just journalists hungry for sound bytes.
Don't know whether I can stand with the Obama administration on this one.
If you're going to be accepting questions in an open forum like the Internet, make sure you make the selection of questions a transparent process too, by putting it where else, but the Internet! - insomniacal, on 07/02/2009, -1/+22You REALLY don't get the purpose of the press, do you?
There are nations with single-party rule. You might be happier in one of them. - TCSavant, on 07/02/2009, -1/+22Good to see the White House Press Corps growing a backbone.
- inactive, on 07/02/2009, -0/+21Yeah, she was pretty tough on Bush. She called him the worst president ever, so you know, it's not like she's exactly Rush Limbaugh over here.
- diggiby, on 07/02/2009, -7/+27Dude, you're a ***** jackass.
- solid12345, on 07/02/2009, -2/+21This has nothing to do with white house press corp, this is about questions in a so-called "public forum" being filtered and only certain people allowed in.
- buffalogums, on 07/02/2009, -11/+29What an asshat. Gibbs is the most smug offensive douche bag ever. Giggling like anybody who dares question his pack of lies must obviously be a fool. We aren't fooled. Not in the least bit.
Obama's dam of ***** is beginning to crack. - madtechnologist, on 07/02/2009, -1/+19@novenator
So, besides the "slow news day", what do you think about Obama's secrecy, lack of willing to answer a question off the cuff, and planting questioners within his press corps?
Are you so sold on Obama that you can't be critical? You only attack sources, people, and Republicans in general when you can't formulate an opinion on the subject? Please tell us novenator, what do you think about this topic? -
