Mr. Gibson asked Ms. Palin, “What insight into Russian actions, particularly in the last couple of weeks, does the proximity of the state give you?”
She said, “They’re our next-door neighbors. And you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska. From an island in Alaska.”
'nuff said. - duckley, on 09/13/2008, -26/+235Sarah Palin: "LOST IN ALASKA"
Hey, let's go hunting! Get the plane ready, I'll get my gun!
Maybe I can bone up on my Foreign Policy! If it's a clear day, we can see Russia ! - cindywren, on 09/13/2008, -21/+202If a Democrat had picked a VP like Palin, they would be toast. Period. Haven't we had enough of giving the Republicans the benefit of the doubt?
As Harry Truman said during the 1948 presidential campaign, “How many times do you have to get or hit over the head before you see who it is that‘s hitting you?” - thelif, on 09/13/2008, -8/+189It is sad that intellectualism is considered a negative trait. Can you imagine any other country's leader running on the platform, "I don't know much, but I am just like you."??
- Rusty626, on 09/13/2008, -9/+166"For those who haven’t noticed, we’re electing a president and vice president, not selecting a winner on “American Idol.”"
Apparently many Americans have NOT noticed. The growth of support for McCain, based on the choice of Palin, suggests that many Americans do think this is a popularity contest, like a student council election. - 7goats, on 09/13/2008, -10/+131This is not the time to make foolish maverick decisions. Jobs are at stake. Homes are risk. And this is McCain's response? I'm surprised how many people are buying this crap.
- e3boy, on 09/14/2008, -4/+123Because Mrs. Palin can see the moon, that makes her qualified to be an astronaut as well!
- Alheithinn, on 09/13/2008, -15/+114The woman is as clueless as the Caribou Barbie they're making her out to be. What is the Bush Doctrine? Where has she been living for the past eight years?
- stonesong, on 09/13/2008, -15/+110Wrong Veriander or Repug Troll or whatever. As an American citizen, as a grandmother, as an Independent I am insulted and horrified at how badly McCain failed the first real test of any candidate running for Presidential office. Especially considering how up to that point McCain was running on the "only someone with experience, my experience, can protect us during these dangerous times"., ie growing terrorism, climate change, etc meme. If that was truly a concern for Sen McCain there are numbers of Republican women with foreign policy and economic expertise he could have chosen. Susan Eisenhower would be one example. You know - President Eisenhower's daughter. That he did not at this time in our nation clearly illustrates that he cares more about winning than what is best for our nation.
- skertso, on 09/13/2008, -8/+88I used to be one of those people that would insist that McCain was honorable but of late I have been proven completely wrong. There is no way I could vote for this ticket, ever. Possibly some day Palin could be ready to be VP, though I don't agree with many of her beliefs, but she is simply NOT ready for that position in this complicated world. McCain at his age and with his health issues was very reckless to choose her and has turned this Presidential election into some kind of American Idol type election and that is dangerous. God help us all if they win this election.
- tsf5000, on 09/13/2008, -13/+85If America is dumb enough to elect McCain/Palin, then our image around the world as idiots will be validated. Since people here don't seem to care about issues or actually doing any research about what candidates do rather than say, I fear this belief may be right.
- Echota, on 01/05/2009, -9/+67FTA: You can’t imagine that John McCain or Barack Obama or Joe Biden or Hillary Clinton or Joe Lieberman would not know what the Bush doctrine is. But Sarah Palin? Absolutely clueless.
Ms. Palin’s problem is not that she was mayor of a small town or has only been in the Alaska governor’s office a short while. Her problem (and now ours) is that she is not well versed on the critical matters confronting the country at one of the most crucial turning points in its history.
John McCains pick of Sarah Palin has proven that it's about his ambition to win the election and not in putting the country first!
We can talk about Palin all day,but it still falls back on McCain and his bad judgement and lack of decision making for America!
Palin is clueless but what does this say about McCain in his choice of her! - TheGroje, on 09/13/2008, -3/+60Where do you live that you require an allowance to criticize?
- bicyclethief, on 09/13/2008, -4/+56Can any Republican deny that Sarah Palin wasn't purely a political pick?
There is a long list of people more experienced, more qualified than she for vice president.
Will anyone dispute this? - MJG2007, on 09/14/2008, -3/+53In what respect, Charlie?
- Rusty0010, on 09/14/2008, -7/+52This is worse then Bush/Cheney..
- inactive, on 09/13/2008, -12/+57Come on, Diggy Republitards -- bury a New York Times opinion piece as "inaccurate".
- LinuxLars, on 09/13/2008, -8/+50She is absolutely not ready.
It astounds me that anyone can argue otherwise. I don't want your average "socker-mom" or "hockey-mom" one heartbeat away from the most powerful position on the planet. I want someone who knows the issues of the day, and ways to address them other than going to war.
McCain's first presidential decision was his choice of a running mate. At best, this choice is, as Bob Herbert says, "reckless". - TheGroje, on 09/13/2008, -2/+44From Little Diomede island (Alaska), you can see Big Diomede island (Russia). While Michael Palin has been there, I doubt very much whether Sarah Palin ever has.
- edmondburke, on 09/13/2008, -21/+61Talk about stating the obvious!
- jellygraph, on 09/14/2008, -8/+46Palin is not ready and McCain is a hypocrite... thats the general consensus
- TheGroje, on 09/13/2008, -1/+39So are you saying that your knowledge of Alaskan geography puts Juneau in Russia's back yard? Or that a ship full of Russian merchant sailors is equivalent to group of foreign heads of state?
I'm asking, because I want to make an informed choice regarding which to laugh at... - thelif, on 09/13/2008, -3/+41It's sad. It is those same women who will slowly lose the rights that woman's rights groups have fought for so long. Those same women who will see their sons and husbands go to war to fight for some vague agenda masked by "patriotism". Those same women who are supporting the candidate who opposed the equal pay bill. Ask them why they support her, it's because she looks like them and she has adorable children.
I'm sorry. - GuacamoleSan, on 09/13/2008, -3/+39She and the Mccain campaign made the assumption that middle Americans can be easily manipulated, and they're pushing slowly the boundary on how far they will go. First it was focusing the issues on gay marriage and abortion, then it was playing up the threat of terrorism in middle America (the World's Largest Heinz Ketchup Bottle: #1 Terrorist Target!), and now to my utter horror and disgust, they are attempting to defend the idea that a hockey mom would make a good VP not because she's intellectually fit for the job, nor because she has the experience, but because she's a hockey mom and is "Just like you and me!". I don't know about you people, but the idea of a hockey mom as VP and possibly as President of our United States is both horrifying and gives me a sickening feeling in my stomach. For the love of our Founding Fathers, for the love of Lincoln, Wilson, and FDR, if there is a greater power in the Universe, SAVE OUR COUNTRY!
- ZeMoose, on 09/14/2008, -4/+39The McCain/Palin ticket seems to be riding on Palin's celebrity.
- USArugula, on 09/13/2008, -9/+43There might be a conniving warmonger taking the white house -- sidekicked by a idiot . Yeah, we're a little scared. You should be too.
- mnortei, on 09/13/2008, -4/+38***** sad isn`t it. I hope America doesn`t let the world down again
- bigstinky, on 09/14/2008, -9/+42I'm sickened by the fact that there are people who still support bush. Even more so by the fact that these republican idiots, with their mouths all flapping are supporting the Mc/alin ticket so robustly.
Are they blind? Party first I guess. And they stand there, pounding their chests so magnificently backing an aged oaf who has nothing to stand on but his prisoner history, and a semi retarded MILF that knows absolutely nothing about the job she so desires.
Republicans, can you honestly say this is the best your party can do? In your heart of hearts, these are the two that will save our country? Are you inane?
Krom save us all should they get their way. Idiots, all of them. - wayuptown, on 09/13/2008, -4/+36NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE OPPOSITION: Help get out the vote!
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Outrage isn't enough. Work for the change you want! - aftern9ne, on 09/13/2008, -8/+40So if the Republicans attack the other candidate, then they are scared as well, yes?
Give me a break. Sarah Palin is the best choice for VP because her record is so easy to hammer into a pulp. Really, thank you for nominating her. - xclapcorex, on 09/13/2008, -1/+31how does having those civilian ships in your backyard give you any background in the first place?
Oh ok that's what I thought. - deadbaby, on 09/13/2008, -8/+38This revelation she lied about her trip to Iraq is going to be a huge story I predict. We're really starting to see the larger picture here of how the McCain campaign is flat out lying these days. To some degree their deception of the truth is even worse than the Bush/Rove tactics of 00 & 04. They veiled their lies in just enough qualification and clever wording that you could rarely flat out say they were lying. McCain's campaign has been caught in at least 3 very large, easy to understand, lies in the last few days. Voters accept being manipulated but when they feel they're being explicitly lied to things start to degrade very quickly.
- thelif, on 09/13/2008, -5/+33So if we find Al Qaeda militants in Pakistan, then Pakistan is involved in Sept. 11th. There are Al Qaeda militants in Africa, Europe, and various Asian countries, are those countries all involved in the Sept 11th attacks? If we invade any of those countries, there WILL be Al Qaeda militants that oppose American troops, does it justify everything?
- bicyclethief, on 09/14/2008, -5/+32I'm sure there are plenty of black people who supported him simply because he is black. Just like there's plenty of white people who won't vote for him because he's not white. Or because he has a funny name.
There probably are a few people more experienced and more qualified than Barack Obama. But he's the one that won the nomination, proving himself to the voters in the primaries. Whereas Palin was plucked out of the air by one person.
To say Obama backed into the nomination is absurd. He had all the odds against him: relatively unknown, Hillary with her name recognition, with Bill and rich donors.
Frankly, the Dems could do a lot worse than a Harvard J.D. magna cum laude Constitutional professor. - inactive, on 09/13/2008, -7/+34Take off the hood -- it's easier to type that way.
- rz8472, on 09/13/2008, -7/+34Sarah Palin isn't a threat to the Democrats. She's a threat to the nation and will drive it to the ground if she's elected.
- charm803, on 09/14/2008, -1/+27I can see the stars at night. I'm an astronaut!
woot woot!
Edit-
Dammit, I didn't see the comment above me. - cprice31, on 09/14/2008, -2/+28This article summarizes the situation perfectly. Whether you agree or disagree with what Sarah Palin is saying is only part of the story. The other and arguably more important part of the equation is that she truly doesn't understand many issues. Conservatives are quick to point out that 90% of Americans wouldn't know what the Bush doctrine is. Well I have news for them, 90% of Americans aren't in a situation where they could be a heartbeat away from the Presidency!
- NegativeDigg, on 09/13/2008, -1/+26^^^^ Idiot.. The point is that it doesn't matter if you can literally see russia. The questions where about the conflict in Russia.
- wookee88, on 09/14/2008, -0/+24i've always found this aspect of American culture puzzling. while sports and movie stars are making millions and are admired by every one, intellectuals seems to received very little respect from the general public.
- teamgwho, on 09/14/2008, -14/+37Countdown to "this article may be inaccurate" in 3... 2.... 1....
- inactive, on 09/14/2008, -0/+23Looking at your past comments - I find it HIGHLY unlikely that you caucused for Obama. You really supported the guy a few weeks ago, and are now referring to supporters as Obamabots? Right . . .
- enki25, on 09/14/2008, -0/+21@Quad
You're the stupidest mother ***** on the planet. Now I know why I hate IT guys so much. - altgeeky1, on 09/14/2008, -1/+21Are you suggesting that the US-Russian border is somehow different than other natural borders?
CANADA borders Russia at the north also.
These are not supposed to be intelligent remarks she's making... she needs only coast for a few weeks.
It's hardly the first time the Republicans made illogical arguments... if it takes YOU more than a "bumper sticker" to refute them, they've won.
I fear an even weaker sovereignty for the United States if McCain wins and Palin becomes president. The debt alone has every nation salivating at the prospect of a new new world order. We will soon be dragged into a pointless, bankrupting war more dangerous than Iraq... like Taiwan or Georgia. Watch. - inactive, on 09/13/2008, -4/+23Thanks, Quad. Now go show this post to your Repuke masters and collect your paycheck for today.
- roebeet, on 09/14/2008, -0/+19QuadZeroRoute does not represent the views of all IT people. I, for one, do not believe my job is even close to being harder than an astronauts....
- bicyclethief, on 09/14/2008, -4/+22If you wish to dismiss a Constitutional professor, a president of the Harvard Law Review as an ambulance chaser, that is your choice. But that you treat his academic accomplishments so lightly doesn't speak well of your objectivity.
- eztempo, on 09/13/2008, -3/+20"Maverick" is just another word for "reckless."
- diggdiggerid, on 09/14/2008, -4/+21Obama was NOMINATED and APPROVED by MILLIONS. That qualifies him to be running. Palin was chosen by ONE person after a fifteen minute phone call.
Your obvious rebuttal will be something about Biden but guess what? He ran and got votes too! Nobody knows who Sarah Palin is or what qualifies her to be vice president (hint: nothing). -
