- BBE1965, on 05/10/2009, -9/+96Just another attempt by torture apologists to delay the inevitable. Obama doesn't want this FOIA case going to the supreme court. Time to release the photos, stop blanking out cables, and begin the prosecutions.
- MercyPolitics, on 05/10/2009, -5/+73This was to be expected coming from Joe Lieberman & Lindsey Graham. However,I don't think it is going to work and hopefully the photographs will be released on May 28 by the Pentagon.
- mgraham80, on 05/10/2009, -4/+67The American people have to know what was done in their name. Release the pictures.
- le0pardess, on 05/10/2009, -3/+57"no public good"? It's not in the "public good" to release evidence of war crimes? WTF? How is it not in the good of the public to see these corrupt war criminals prosecuted, tried and jailed for breaking the law and torturing?! Imagine that, ((justice)) and the rule of law for their "hate crimes" is not in the best interest of the public. Obviously, they are afraid they are afraid we are going to demand accountability, and put their asses behind bars where they belong! And we can add these two jackasses to the list for trying to cover it up.
The mistake the mis-leaders have made is in forgetting they've been APPOINTED and thinking they've been ANOINTED. - homercles337, on 05/10/2009, -6/+58Lieberman and Graham? Enemies of the state asking the president for a favour?
- jleopold, on 05/10/2009, -4/+50The problem is that Lieberman and Graham have enlisted a few Democrats and Republicans to join them this week in urging the photos are not released. Obama hasn't caved yet, and we have to give him credit for that. Let's hope he doesn't feel pressure.
- inactive, on 05/10/2009, -6/+33These photos must be released even if it does cause an uproar. People need to know that this was not the Lynndie England's of the world acting on their own accord. Rumsfeld was responsible for this. It's a fact and he should be prosecuted.
- hawkspur, on 05/10/2009, -5/+28***** Joe Lieberman. If anyone could represent every scummy thing that politicians do, it's him.
- inactive, on 05/10/2009, -1/+22Because nobody is supposed to be above the law.
- funhouse1970, on 05/10/2009, -1/+20Any move towards greater transparency is good. However, like the Abu Graib photo release this will be another whitewash blamed on a few bad apples. Obama IS NOT even considering prosecuting those responsible for authorizing torture.
- JustinHopewell, on 05/10/2009, -4/+22Why was I not surprised to see Lieberman's name in this article? Dude needs to just shut the ***** up.
- spriggig, on 05/10/2009, -3/+18The wound must be cleaned thoroughly before it can heal.
- novenator, on 05/10/2009, -3/+17Release the information! Do not censor this from the public. We need full disclosure, now.
- gemlarin, on 05/10/2009, -5/+18***** them. Lieberman is a ***** coward, and a traitor.
- jleopold, on 05/10/2009, -3/+16True. I think that is exactly how the Republicans intend to spin it. Hopefully, Carl Levin will come out and say that is not the case as he pointed out in his voluminous report a couple of weeks ago. He said Rumsfeld and Bush were directly responsible for the abuse at Abu Ghraib and elsewhere. The Democrats can't be on the defensive here
- funhouse1970, on 05/10/2009, -5/+18Enemies of the State? They are the State. Both parties are guilty.
- ajgasper, on 05/10/2009, -3/+15The question is does Obama have a ground swell of public support to release the photos. I'm not sure there is anything new, but it will probably awaken public sentiment to investigate. I hope it's done in a manner that sets moral and ethical standards, and does not turn into a witch hunt.
- bsmang, on 05/10/2009, -2/+14If you're 100% against torture, then shouldn't you also be for uncovering the crime and hopefully someday punishing the relevant people for it?
- thesonofdarwin, on 05/10/2009, -1/+12Except it's not going to happen unless the people force the hearings to happen. And 'the people' are not going to do so because many of them believe nothing ever happened. It's in the best interests of the majority of our representatives to bury this as quickly as possible because people from all sides are going to be brought into the spotlight. I can't see any harm coming from the public knowing what actually happens behind closed doors... out of sight out of mind needs to stop.
- bobbi21, on 05/10/2009, -0/+11uh.. to punish the ppl who committed the crime? I don't get how punishing someone for a crime = opening up old wounds or digging into the past.
- galore, on 05/10/2009, -2/+13Does Lieberman have the same attitude towards releasing holocaust pictures?
- JoeVet, on 05/10/2009, -0/+10Maybe it would lead to the right people being charged and sent to prison. It is plainly obvious that the soldiers were scape goats and their convictions should be overturned and expunged and the last one in prison should be released.
- le0pardess, on 05/10/2009, -4/+14Add rice, cheney, tenet, and rove. All their clothes should be stripped, heads repeatedly shoved under water and thrown in ***** jail. An eye for an eye would be the only justice for any future thought of the mis-leaders to authorize torture.
- bobbi21, on 05/10/2009, -0/+10Because no one seems to care that the detainees were abused. At least no one cares enough to do anything about it. Pictures tend to get ppl to actual do things. Last time it at least got a few scapegoats in trouble. Hopefully by now we're learned that's not good enough.
- tetroidBurke, on 05/10/2009, -1/+11Enemies of the American People.
- aoou4444, on 05/10/2009, -1/+11Transparency
I hope he doesn't forget his promises. I don't care what some senators think I should see or know about. I want the reality and I want the truth. This should be an easy decision for Obama if he has any integrity.
I'm tired of other people deciding what's good for me. Americans need to wake up. We only ask for this from our leaders (I'm looking at you people that complain to the FCC, people that get offended by everything, parents that don't engage with their children and blame others for their failure, etc.)
There are people out there that want us to be ignorant and they are doing a good job so far. - INTERNETMASTER, on 05/10/2009, -2/+11I'd like to "block" these senators (throw a block of wood at them)
- bsmang, on 05/10/2009, -5/+13I bet Fox News has these guys' names up in lights about now, touted as the latest potential heroes of our great nation.
- PeppermintPig, on 05/10/2009, -1/+9Enemies of liberty.
- canada42, on 05/11/2009, -0/+8Just because some people think that "no public good" will come of them doesn't mean that the public has any less right to see them and now what happened. The American public needs to start realizing that they're the ones who should be calling the shots and stop being puppets to our elected representatives.
- charm803, on 05/10/2009, -2/+9Ok, let's make a deal.
Don't make the photos public, but send them to trial. - novenator, on 05/10/2009, -0/+7Not PR for Obama, information for the TRUTH. The only ones who don't want this released are those who defend torture in the first place.
- ProLick, on 05/10/2009, -3/+10I'm not concerned about Obama holding out or letting the last of the Bush-Cheney shills block them. It's more interesting for history and voting purposes to see who joins this group.
- Dustin00, on 05/10/2009, -1/+8I agree, it will be upsetting around the world to see what atrocities were committed in the name of protecting freedom.
NO government should ever be allowed to commit such acts and if there is evidence showing that we did, then it must be made public and the only way to apologize to the world and protect our troops is by demonstrating we are an honorable, just, and lawful country and that those responsible will be punished. - DangerCollie, on 05/10/2009, -7/+13A Republican and Neocon don't want the photos released. What a surprise. Maybe they're afraid their party will get even smaller
- bsmang, on 05/10/2009, -0/+6I guess you do have a point there, but I still don't quite agree with it. I think that in this case the public awareness is a requirement as sort of a check on the system. They are politicians after all, and we are the people. If we don't try to keep them honest, surely nobody else will. Also I think that trying to keep a lid on things like that only makes us look worse.
- fury420, on 05/10/2009, -0/+6what could you possibly gain from more of Obama's college documentation?
how is it relevant in any way to this? - bobbi21, on 05/11/2009, -0/+6It's been how long since we knew about this stuff and no one has yet been prosecuted? Obviously just knowledge isn't enough to get ppl to do something about this. We need gruesome pictures so ppl will actually accept that something horrible was allowed to go on. The only thing close to prosecution for torture happened when the pictures of abu ghraib was released before, even though they just pinned it on a few "bad apples". Hopefully with the evidence we have now, they won't be able to hide with that defense anymore.
- fury420, on 05/10/2009, -1/+7are these photos somehow worse than the currently circulating abuse photographs?
I mean... the pyramid-shaped pile of naked iraqi detainees wearing hoods was pretty damn bad.... - bobbi21, on 05/11/2009, -2/+8If anything you should be for the release of every bit of information then so we know exactly what was going on.
Either way I think the point is WE DON"T TORTURE. I dont care about the circumstances. I don't care if it prevented a million american deaths (even though all evidence so far has shown it hasn't prevented any. and may have even caused some due to false information). We didn't give the japanese a free pass and they definitely had to worry about an impending nuclear attack. If they don't get it, neither does america. - bobbi21, on 05/11/2009, -0/+5While I'm not a fan of "just following orders" JoeVet is basically right. The ppl who were ultimately responsible for the crimes went off scott free. How is that justice?
It's like killing saddam hussein and saying "ok we punished the guy responsible for the 911 attacks, osama bin laden can go free".
so sad that my ridiculous extreme example is so close to the truth.. - LucidHawk, on 05/11/2009, -1/+6Who are these ***** in Connecticut who have put Lieberman into office 4 times..
He's like the worst Republican ever, posing as the worst Democrat ever. - malex, on 05/11/2009, -2/+7That is an amazingly poor display of rational thinking.
- JoeMondo, on 05/11/2009, -1/+6The problem is not that the photos are released, but that the acts in the photos took place at all.
I don't know what sort of drunk dysfunctional families some people grew up in that leaves them feeling it's better to let these nasty things be hidden rather than facing up to them like adults. - bobbi21, on 05/11/2009, -0/+5Glad you at least have a reasoned view of the issue, even if I don't agree with it. If we're worried about the victims we could always blur their faces. I'm sure they more than anyone would want the ppl responsible for this to be brought to justice.
Let's just say you were raped and tortured by some one and it was all caught on tape. For some reason, though, no one is convicting the guy who raped you. They say, oh it wasn't that bad, or it wasn't really torture. or he made sure that you were just in pain but not in any threat of actual death. I would think you'd be trying to show that tape to anyone who'd listen to prove to them that it WAS torture and it WAS despicable and that the person should be arrested and punished for his crime.
If push comes to shove, just ask the detainees what they want. They were the victims. While I can't speak for them, if I was in their situation, I would want justice, even if a few embarrassing photos had to be released to get it. - bobbi21, on 05/11/2009, -0/+4If this was my family I would want someone to be ARRESTED AND PUNISHED for TORTURING my family. If the entire court system doesn't want to prosecute the ppl who tortured my family i'd take the argument to the ppl and if that includes showing them evidence of what happened I would be fine with that. It's called justice. I'm sure the family of murder victims wouldn't want the courts to suppress evidence of who the murderer is just because it would show the victim being murdered...
- CosmicSurfer, on 05/11/2009, -0/+4TRUTH is TRUTH but for Lieberman and his friends, truth is a threat to THEIR power and their agenda. The Neo-Con and Radical Wrong wing are so very threatened by the truth on every issue that they will do anything to keep the spin going; the division of the people current; and the terror in play. As long as we are divided; WE FAIL - and that IS their point.
The power vampires are out on the prowl. As The SCREAM "communist", "socialist", "unAmarucun” and "unpatriotic" at ANYONE trying to bring TRUTH to the fore.
NO, we must not release the truth to the people..."we can't handle the truth" - what good will it do? ONLY show us what has been done in OUR name! AND they cannot have that, now can they? If we realize the horror that we have done from torture to murder to the decimation of entire families, neighborhoods, towns and peoples, we might just have to hold someone accountable….NOPE, we mustn’t have that! More lies and manipulation to keep the people in the dark and believing that they are the guys in the white hats.
SO very worried about the crimes committed that they will do anything to keep us from seeing the truth. As long as they can keep their base growing with the lies and manipulation and keep people divided and fearful, they can keep their power and keep their position. They are moving AGAIN to take a run at the presidency and they must not let the citizens know what they are all about.
They care nothing about obstruction of justice, their inhumanity and the destruction of the Constitution as long as they can keep their power intact. - JoeMondo, on 05/11/2009, -1/+5They aren't enemies of the state.
But they are enemies of decency, and apologists for torture. - callmebwana, on 05/11/2009, -0/+4This is what is on the tapes..............http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/2004/07/15/ ...
And you still think 911 was beneath them? - bobbi21, on 05/11/2009, -0/+4seeing how much they're trying to block this stuff it's probably pretty bad..
