- sultanknish, on 02/05/2009, -35/+407Congress should not be in the business of dictating the political content of talk shows...
particularly when we're talking about a liberal congress trying to suppress criticism of itself, by suppressing conservative talk shows
if liberal talk shows can't succeed in the marketplace, congressional democrats practicing protectionism and censorship on their behalf is a violation of the Constitution and the entire premise of freedom of speech - inactive, on 02/05/2009, -42/+199A "disservice to the public." ? Who the hell is she to tell the public what they can and can't listen to? Did Air America fail because people were told not to listen? No. They failed because the public didn't want to hear that crap. This is all we need. A government that tells us what HAS to be on the radio. ***** soicialists.
- redwolfwalker, on 02/05/2009, -19/+147Radios and TVs still have on and off buttons and channel changing capabilities, that is freedom to choose.
- inactive, on 02/05/2009, -81/+206Pathetic. Why are Liberals so afraid of opposing ideas? Are there arguments so weak?
- OYAHHH, on 02/05/2009, -19/+141Note:
Sen. Debbie Stabenow's husband is Thomas Athans.
Thomas Athans is the founder of Democracy Radio.
Thomas Athans joined Air America as Executive Vice President per the November 1, 2005 press release which can be found here:

Hmm, do I detect a thread here? Could Ms. Stabenow have a possible personal and financial stake in the success or failure of conservative talk radio?
Just follow the money and you'll get to the bottom of things pretty quickly. This lady is dirty.
BTW, just for the fun of it, Thomas Athans was caught paying $150 to a prostitute in February of 2008. - Janinco, on 02/05/2009, -47/+137The Liberals can pick up any Newspaper, magazine, or watch any Network on TV and get all the Liberal garbage they want....not to mention they can also go watch a Hollywood movie.
- PuterPrsn, on 02/05/2009, -23/+102It's supposed to be a free country, and a free market. When liberal talk shows pay their own way, they will proliferate. So far, they've tanked. If you don't like them, don't listen to them. There are lots and lot of radio stations, TV news, newspapers, and weekly news magazines to go around, and on all different viewpoints. Just because she thinks that the majority of talk radio is "incorrect" doesn't make it so. That's what free speech is all about.
- DAVENP0RT, on 02/06/2009, -21/+97Fairness seems to be the only note that liberals can play these days, but only as long as it's fair to them. Never mind the people that are actually paying the money for it, they'll still have to pay their taxes to the bourgeoisie, even when all of the advertisers pull their funding.
I'm still waiting for people to make the connection to farces like this and...oh, say...the economic collapse. - inactive, on 02/05/2009, -29/+101Liberals just need to make a better wheel. If they have such a great message, let them create the better message. People turn on, or turn off, their radios depending on the content. If their message is so grand, wouldn't people just simply start tuning in? They've attempted liberal talk shows in my area several times, and yet somehow they just simply choke and die.
- zelig, on 02/06/2009, -14/+83We already HAVE plenty of liberal speech on the airwaves- just tune to MSNBC, NBC, NPR, CBS, CNN, PBS, HBO, etc... and if you get tired of the tube you can read the New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Gurardian, FT, etc.
I notice she is not concerned with any of those.
Talk Radio is successful because it serves as a foil to the mainstream television and print media. - redwolfwalker, on 02/05/2009, -20/+80Notice to all bloggers of what ever political bent, are you next?
- SuperVepr308, on 02/05/2009, -45/+103When are they going to start talking about Keith Overbite? Is he immune somehow? Wait, he is. He is a moonbat liberal attack puppy.
- Wetzilla, on 02/06/2009, -6/+64I totally agree. Even though I hate most conservative talk shows, I still think this is a very, very bad idea. This has nothing to do with what can or can't succeed in a market place, it's freedom of speech.
- DrJen, on 02/05/2009, -22/+79I can assure you that if a far left agenda is forced, some of us will pull our advertising.
- inactive, on 02/06/2009, -18/+71Sen. Debbie Stabenow's husband is Thomas Athans.

Air America radio stands to gain SIGNIFICANTLY from any bills passed on these talks of "balance"
END THE CORRUPTION!!! - inactive, on 02/05/2009, -36/+84I believe liberal radio has always failed is because your normal idiot liberal would rather be watching American Idol than learning about what is going on in politics.
- Dewhead, on 02/05/2009, -18/+63If the Senator believes that something has been said "incorrectly" then sue for slander or start up her own radio station to issue "corrections"
- Janinco, on 02/05/2009, -30/+74Yes!
- TheInformer, on 02/06/2009, -13/+55Notice how the esteemed Democrat senator is -only- targeting talk radio. Why doesn't the wise and wonderous Democrat senator target other media forms such as television and print media? Easy answer. They are heavily biased towards her and her party, and as such are allowed to do and say what they want.
Agreeing views in the new administration are allowed.
Dissenting views in the new administration are not.
Change, indeed. - jaymzdean, on 02/05/2009, -16/+53Stand up, America.
- swordedge, on 02/05/2009, -16/+52Freedom of Speech... If this lunatic senator gets laws passed to limit political talk radio, you WILL see it argued in the supreme court.
- pookydirt, on 02/06/2009, -24/+57She apparently hasn't heard of NPR...
- CaptCarrot, on 02/06/2009, -3/+34Maybe that's because she's married to a liberal talk-radio industry insider, hmm?
- Scanner, on 02/06/2009, -6/+36And lets not forget that NPR and PBS are FUNDED by your tax dollars whether you agree with their content or not.
- AWBoy666, on 02/05/2009, -38/+67***** pathetic.
Liberals only want to shut down talk radio because they realize they can't support any of their insane arguments. - Seal, on 02/06/2009, -6/+35Wait - you think that this one person represents the viewpoint of an entire political spectrum?
That's like me saying that all conservatives are against racial equality because one idiot promoted segregation. Or me saying that all scientists favour decapitation as a method of childbirth, because one scientist in Algeria thought it was a good idea. Please, you have more braincells than that. Use them.
What she's pushing forth is a terrible idea. But that doesn't somehow mean that "liberals are afraid of opposing ideas", it means that she's an idiot. And you'll find that idiots aren't all aligned with any one political party. - Janinco, on 02/05/2009, -4/+31Welcome to the Network news!
- CaptCarrot, on 02/05/2009, -7/+33But when the choice is nothing or several somethings that are all the same, there's not really a choice at all.
- inactive, on 02/05/2009, -26/+51How the heck do these people get to dictate to us what we can listen to? Or what the people who own the radio stations can put out on the airwaves? THEY don't own the airwaves! I'd like to see a deed for them if them if the so full of themselves, Russian acting congress think they do. So many democrats. Has none any decency in the democratic party? I am asking a genuine question here. Are there ANY Christians in the democratic party? Or in fact can one BE a Democrat AND a Christian at the same time? Believing as they do-( or do you have to believe all that some like Obama and Pelosi does?)
- meninostongue, on 02/06/2009, -11/+36I'm a very liberal guy, but have to agree that this is wrong. Counter this type of radio with decisive, positive action that makes people's lives better. You'll leave people weighing hot air against results and make the Rush Limbaughs of the world look like the idiots they are. Don't counter it by silencing dissent; at best that sends the impression that the criticism is valid and at worst it is ethically and, perhaps, constitutionally wrong.
- DAVENP0RT, on 02/06/2009, -27/+51Most liberals' closing arguments consist of "fascist" and something along the lines of racist accusations.
- zelig, on 02/06/2009, -3/+26Also true. To me, SpyCatcher, the difference is that the New York Times is supposed to be a journalistic endeavour, without bias.
ie: Rush Limbaugh and Bill Maher are pundits, not a journalists.
As for the NBC Nightly News and its ilk, their reporting consists of a never-ending string of ideologically-liberal vignettes. The dire reporting of Global Warming being just one example, the bias toward Katrina victims, another. - krisp9751, on 02/06/2009, -3/+25I'm about as liberal as they get and I could not agree with you more. NPR pretty much covers most sides of issues so just listen to them if you don't wanna listen to Comedian Rush Limbaugh. It is unacceptable for congress to control the media.
- muckemuck, on 02/06/2009, -19/+40You know.. the same could be said for the GOP. They pulled some dirty, dirty politics to keep supporters of Ron Paul from having a voice last year.
So I have to ask: Why are big government neoconservatives so afraid of opposing ideas? - swordedge, on 02/06/2009, -4/+24remember, your fairness opinion means that if you do a news story where you state as fact that the earth is round, you MUST find a flat earther to refute it.... ALWAYS. That people that believe that crazy is irrelevant.
- inboxnews, on 02/06/2009, -10/+30fta: When Press asked if it is time to bring back the Fairness Doctrine, Stabenow responded, "I think it's absolutely time to pass a standard." To Press' inquiry as to whether she will push for hearings in the Senate "to bring these owners in and hold them accountable," Stabenow replied, "I have already had some discussions with colleagues, and, you know, I feel like that's going to happen. Yep."
- pookydirt, on 02/06/2009, -2/+22It's all becoming clear now...
Thanks for the tip(s)! - Seal, on 02/06/2009, -5/+24Well, after reading all these comments, I have to say that I'm quite surprised. I didn't realize that the effects of years of dirty politics were so profound.
What you have are two sides that no longer discuss matters on a basis of issues, but on a basis of political affiliation. And do so to the point where the issues themselves become irrelevant. And you know what's scarier? It's not really political affiliation, if you read these, but more political spectrum. People not only dismissive, but downright aggressive, against political views that aren't in the same spectrum as their own. "Liberal" is literally used here as a condescending term.
Attack this idiotic plan of this woman for what it is - an idiotic plan. You'll find that most "liberals" will agree that it's beyond stupid. But the second you try to pawn this off on an entire rather centrist spectrum of ideology, then you're treading on dangerous territory. At least dangerous for this country's future. Because what you're doing is dismissing not bad ideas, but political diversity. And not just any political diversity - but reasonable political diversity (ie. not muslim extreemists.)
It is precisely this political diversity, from both left and right, which helps a country move forward. - Dewhead, on 02/05/2009, -13/+32The only way they can win is they don't have any competition.
- HOWDOYOUKNOW, on 02/06/2009, -15/+34
She should not be in elected office in the USA. She does not stand for the basic rights of the People! What is popular is on radio! If it wasn't popular, it would be off in a minute. But there is a huge audience that wants to hear their talk radio! Her goal is to force un-wanted information on the people. She wants to force what SHE wants on People. Insteal of letting the People choose for themselves. - rupaw, on 02/06/2009, -3/+21I'm a liberal and I agree with you 100%. If you don't like the right-wing nuts on talk-radio you have the CHOICE to listen to someone else on TV or via the internet. CHOICE is what makes America great. Forcing stations to have liberal radio shows is stupid and wrong on so many levels...
- Ferretman, on 02/06/2009, -25/+43Not surprised. Libs can't compete in the market of ideas, they want to *force* you to listen to their drivel.
They've tried Lib radio. It doesn't work. It's not particularly interesting to listen to, and people really aren't interested in hearing how everything in the world is all their fault. When they start offering *real* *solutions*, then Lib radio might have a shot. - iMattK, on 02/05/2009, -28/+45You got it! If you are in a debate, you finish off your opponent with your knowledge. For the liberals, their knowledge is wanting thus the need to "level the playing field" so to speak.
- CaptCarrot, on 02/06/2009, -2/+19Someone doubts, so let me use the venerated HuffPo as a citation, so no one can dismissively say "Faux News."

The husband of U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow told police he paid a prostitute $150 for sex at a hotel, according to a police report.
Thomas Athans, 46, co-founder of the liberal TalkUSA Radio network, was stopped by police who were investigating prostitution at the hotel, according to a police report obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press under the state Freedom of Information Act.

Vested interest, ya think? - daisymeme, on 02/06/2009, -12/+28Very well said! Thanks!
- CaptCarrot, on 02/06/2009, -6/+21If a liberal station is bought and replaced with a conservative one, and it ends up pulling in a bigger market share, doesn't that say something about what the local populace wants more?
And what was the liberal station doing wrong in the first place that made it purchasable? If it were successful and reaching a wide audience, it likely couldn't have been bought. Unless, of course, it's subsidized by the government. - akula89, on 02/06/2009, -4/+18perhaps, constitutionally wrong?
it would be most definitely "constitutionally wrong" - Charlotte_Web, on 02/06/2009, -3/+16Do you have internet where you live? Obviously you do. So, you have access to Air America and whatever else far left content that you want to listen to.
Viable alternatives exist. Your argument doesn't hold water in the 21st century. - MoisturePoints, on 02/06/2009, -24/+36Your freedom is not granite. And yet right before our eyes we're watching it be chipped away. Piece by piece, with niceties and sugar-coated formalities. Smiley faces with an agenda.
How much more? How much more do you give these people? Your freedom is etched in marble. It's a pillar, a column, a foundation.
Liberalism is a slow road to despotism. - Spuy767, on 02/06/2009, -17/+29Liberal radio paid for by your tax dollar.
