- badqat, on 01/26/2009, -14/+95Yeah, he failed to pay some of his federal taxes in 2001. And in 2002. And in 2003. And in 2004.
- btschul, on 01/27/2009, -25/+90So when Joe the Plumber forgot to pay approx. $1000 in taxes, he is a complete idiot completely unfit to ask a question of the messiah, but Geithner, who owed close to $15,000 in taxes is completely fit to run the Treasury? Maybe I should just link to the Wikipedia page on "hypocrisy".
- Xbef, on 01/27/2009, -10/+69The Treas Sec can't get his taxes right. He himself called it a "careless mistake".
Do you really want someone capable of making careless mistakes as the sec of the treasury?? - barktwiggs, on 01/27/2009, -3/+43If only Geithner was a registered Republican, then there'd be no problem blocking his confirmation.
- ChefGroovy, on 01/27/2009, -33/+67I'm still paying off my self employment double tax from last year. This cockbite does it several years in a row and now he's in charge of it all.
Do as I say, not as I do. God I hate Obama - inactive, on 01/27/2009, -8/+37"We don't pay taxes. Only the little people pay taxes." -- Leona Helmsley
- dw4prez, on 01/27/2009, -10/+36Woot! no more paying taxes. and if caught. "It was a simple mistake"
- PoizonFrog, on 01/27/2009, -3/+27Yes, but shouldn't he have paid when they were due, like the citizens do? And shouldn't he have reported the other 2 years he evaded taxes at that point, instead of being forced to honesty a second time?
*****, why don't we just put Madoff in charge? He's an accomplished and knowledgeable thief, too. - jeremyduffy, on 01/27/2009, -9/+32So how does someone who is a tax evader end up even being eligible for this position. WTF is going on?
- Waiting2awake, on 01/27/2009, -9/+29Its change baby, change! It like making a complete 360.
- inactive, on 01/27/2009, -17/+36Those CFR boys stick together.
- zirconx, on 01/27/2009, -0/+19Most american's don't pay their taxes? I don't know anybody in the US that doesn't pay their taxes. I'm sure some don't, but its not the norm.
Not only that, but we're not just talking about "most american's" here, we're talking about the TREASURY SECRETARY! - alais, on 01/27/2009, -9/+26How the ***** are the American people supposed to take this appointment serious?
- Ouze, on 01/28/2009, -2/+18I wish that obama had immediately retracted his nomination when this came to light. I think misplaced loyalty and stubborness were a lot of the problem of the last administration (gonzales, rumsfeld).
- supercandy, on 01/28/2009, -14/+29The old Democrat Swindle...
CHANGE is a big fat joke.
First the liar named Hillary Clinton, then the tax cheat.
The Democrats Party remains the party of corruption. - muckemuck, on 01/27/2009, -4/+19I wonder what the percentage of Obama's cabinet are members of the Council on Foreign Relations? Probably a much higher percentage than the percentage of his supporters who know what the CFR is, what it has proposed, and what that would mean for the US.
- inactive, on 01/27/2009, -13/+28Anybody voting for Democrats or Republicans expecting change for the better need to wake up.
- Doubledown, on 01/28/2009, -2/+15I thought it was more like $30k in back taxes
- Barackalypse, on 01/28/2009, -1/+14"He's been a key player in the government's response to collapsing financial institutions and the housing and credit markets since last summer."
Maybe I misread, but it said he was being promoted, not fired for gross incompetence. He's a 6 year member of the Federal Reserve, a group that so thoroughly mismanaged our monetary policy that they helped create a massive housing bubble because of foolish loans and speculation enabled by low interest rates, and then he's involved in a horribly mismanaged bailout that hasn't freed up credit markets and can't even account for all the money it spent, is now running the Treasury Department? I never expected Obama to succeed, but I never expected that he was foolish enough to think you get change by putting the same people that screwed something up more power to make it worse. - PoizonFrog, on 01/27/2009, -3/+16You're being unfair. It hasn't been proven that he wasn't just too stupid to do his own taxes.
Yeah, either way, I have very low expectations of Geithner. - Barackalypse, on 01/28/2009, -1/+13Why anyone who has worked for the Federal Reserve anytime in the last decade should be anywhere but in prison right now is beyond me. Obama shows he has learned nothing about the economic mess we are in if he thinks a Federal Reserve banker who was present for the last 6 years of our monetary policy is a good choice to run the Treasury Department. The only consoliation in all of this is that its pretty unlikely he'll be any worse than Henry Paulson was.
- yocouchdigga, on 01/28/2009, -4/+16If you're going down, I'm goin' with your for saying it like it is.
- Demaskee, on 01/28/2009, -1/+12The real BS part is when he finally did pay his taxes he didn't have to pay any late penalties. I doubt I would be that fortunate if I made the same "Mistake:.
- westtexas357, on 01/28/2009, -6/+17wait, I thought change was coming
- muckemuck, on 01/27/2009, -10/+21He helped mastermind the great year we had in the banking sector last year... umm.. here's an idea.... let's put him in a position of great power over the others who were there making massive mistakes.
..... if your Senators voting FOR the TARP bailout last fall despite the calls to them being 100 to 1 against it wasn't clear enough (and we find that it was a huge bait and switch, didn't work, went to pay bonuses, etc), this appointment of Geithner should clue you in that your Senator does not have your best interest in mind. - TheInformer, on 01/28/2009, -4/+14In the past, liars and tax cheats would be automatically barred from office. Under the Obama administration, that's not the case any more.
Change, indeed. - frcc, on 01/28/2009, -5/+14Misplace $350,000,000,000 and get a promotion.
- inactive, on 01/27/2009, -8/+17And a key participant in decisions made by the Bush administration to deal with the worst financial crisis to hit the country since the Great Depression.
Great resume ;o - chesterogilvie, on 01/27/2009, -2/+10I dugg you, but I would add "Anybody voting ONLY for Democrats or Republicans expecting change for the better need to wake up."
There are a couple of good guys in there............somewhere. - Moonkeeper, on 01/27/2009, -0/+8The "common mistake" was him not paying a self-employment tax. If any of us did that we'd be in jail.
- inactive, on 01/28/2009, -3/+11Because they orchestrated 9/11. Duh. But they are mere puppets for the Jewish New World Orderâ„¢ who in turn are puppets for the Intergalactic Cabal of Space Reptiles.
In his seminal essay, Werner Von Massenburger* explains how Ron Paul was prophesied to ride to earth on a pallid space horse and deliver us from the reptilians. "And he who bleedeth gold and breatheth liberty shall come unto the responsible and deliver them the Consitution. And the Consitution shall smite the Federal Reserve to dust..."
http://mises.org/Von_Massenburger_Theory_On_Cyclic ... - frcc, on 01/28/2009, -4/+12Dug down for blaming one party when they're both guilty of the same crimes.
- Doubledown, on 01/28/2009, -1/+9The best laugh I had all day... oh, well the second best laugh. The tax credits in Obama's bailout package will be funded by Social Security got my first laugh.....
- inactive, on 01/28/2009, -0/+8I am not happy about this for two reasons: a man who failed to pay his payroll taxes for four ***** years doesn't have any business being the Secretary of the Treasury; and his nomination is a blemish on an Obama administration that's pushing for up and up politics.
ObamAmerican48<<<<<<<<<<<<<<not happy. But they're still pissy about Holder.
I'll swear, our senators are idiots. All of them. - deema1, on 01/28/2009, -0/+7I asked my accountant about this, wondering how we "normal" folk would fare in a similar situation. He said that he seriously doubted that Geithner made a mistake as he claims, as he knew better. However, he did indicate that this wouldn't be a jail-able offense. We'd be liable for the back tax payment as well as a penalty, the size of which would depend on the amount and whether it was an oversight or a blatant omission.
- Barackalypse, on 01/28/2009, -1/+8Hope and change!
- rahamm, on 01/27/2009, -2/+9You don't really know what his tax mistake was do you?
- deema1, on 01/28/2009, -0/+6I guess that makes it all right then siggy. I guess if the public uncovers his crime then it makes it acceptable.
The first step to CHANGE, is to remove those who prey on the system. This, as innocuous as it may seem, is not change. Just more of the same political shenanigans that Washington has been built on. - rebrad, on 01/28/2009, -2/+8This is an Obomination and inexcusable.
- inactive, on 01/27/2009, -5/+11So does this mean I don't have to pay my taxes anymore?
- Nitrodist88, on 01/28/2009, -0/+6"Ooops, careless mistake. I forgot to pay my taxes in 2001. And 2002. And 2003. And 2004."
- Spoomeister, on 01/28/2009, -1/+6Obama needs to be asked about this at every opportunity.
- rynsa, on 01/28/2009, -1/+6Not only is this guy an evangelist in the church of neoliberal, free-market populism, and thus a part of the snake-oil machine that got us into this mess in the first place, he's actually documented, on paper, as trying to blatantly fleece the American public. The ***** actually claimed a camping trip with his kid as a tax-deductable business expense. That's some ***** right there, regardless of party affiliation.
How about this... lets do away with this damn banking cabal they call the "Treasury," and then we don't have to hire greasy schmucks like Geithner. - yocouchdigga, on 01/28/2009, -0/+5I think I might make some "mistakes" this year, in his honor and forget to pay.
- btschul, on 01/28/2009, -1/+6You're right. It was $35,000 in taxes and $15,000 in interest. My mistake.
- drewlock, on 01/28/2009, -0/+4lets refrain form ad hominem attacks and accept the truth. When something is wrong its wrong, party affiliation has nothing to do with this issue.
- Barackalypse, on 01/28/2009, -1/+5There's change, Geithner, for instance, is changing offices and paying his taxes.
- yocouchdigga, on 01/28/2009, -1/+5you said it, man... nobody ***** with the CFR.
- duke_nate, on 01/28/2009, -1/+5Hehe, so true!
