- badqat, on 01/05/2009, -20/+113Who made Schumer pope of the Minnesota senate election?
- badqat, on 01/05/2009, -9/+48Ah, see, I thought only the Secretary of State of Minnesota could certify the results of a Minnesota state election.
But yeah, a partisan hack unrelated to the state or election in question other than chairing a national committee certainly outranks the Minnesota Secretary of State...lol. - californicator, on 01/05/2009, -20/+57Congratulations, Al!
You're good enough, your smart enough, and dog-gonnit... people like you a little more than Coleman! - JigoroKano, on 01/05/2009, -2/+28Actually it's not at all within his jurisdiction. The senate can only block a representative if he doesn't meet the constitutional requirements (citizenship, age, etc). Beyond that he can't do squat... legally.
- WordsnCollision, on 01/05/2009, -10/+32Schumer: “With the Senate set to begin meeting on Tuesday to address the important issues facing the nation, it is crucial that Minnesota’s seat not remain empty." Say Chuck, does that go for Roland Burris in Illinois as well?
- DaDrake, on 01/05/2009, -0/+22No this won't be over any time soon. Undoubtedly, Coleman is going to make challenges in court.
- pathouston22, on 01/05/2009, -26/+42I don't care who won this race, but there was some questionable stuff going on. There was a story a couple weeks ago about one ballot was awarded to Franken, with Coleman clearly being selected on the ballot.
Typical election corruption I guess. But only Bush steals elections, right? - absurdist, on 01/05/2009, -2/+17ROFLMAO!!! Thanks, Jimbo. I get it now.
Well trolled, sir. I take my hat off to you. You have to be the most successful troll in the history of the internet. - Wakkyweed, on 01/05/2009, -0/+13Yes I do blame you, because #1, you misspelled Kodos's name, and #2, you should have voted for Kang, like I did.
- dexter411, on 01/05/2009, -1/+14I swear to god, if I hear another lame Stuart Smalley reference, I will burst into flames.
- mlavergn, on 01/05/2009, -2/+14I agree that non-MNs should keep out of it ... however I don't agree about a revote ... a simple majority is 50%+1 and that seems to be apply nicely here. If the election was tied, then a revote would be called for. Coleman can always run again in 6 years.
- laserdog, on 01/05/2009, -3/+14"Typical election corruption I guess."
A.) Gov of MN is a Republican who was considered as a likely VP pick of McCain.
B.) I dare you to name a recount process *more* transparent than this. Being able to see each and every disputed ballot online?
I think your accusation of corruption is based more on apathy than facts. - JAHred, on 01/05/2009, -10/+21I wish non-Minnesotans would stay out of our elections. Instead of a seat being awarded based on 250 votes, wouldn't it make sense to do a revote? No one won this election, it was awarded to Franken.
- absurdist, on 01/05/2009, -11/+22Jesus H. Christ, Spaza. I could repeat once again all the easily available information about bipartisan recount committees, transparency, and the like, but it would be a waste of breath. At this point you're really not worth anything more than a hearty go ***** yourself.
- krahzee, on 01/05/2009, -4/+14As a New Yorker, I declare Schumer a douchebag.
The guy never met a press conference he didn't like. The running joke is that he is the king of the Sunday press conference, since Monday is always a slow news day, and the papers will cover him out necessity.
He is also one of the people trying to use NY's other Senate Seat to give unqualified people a job in politics. First Hillary who didn't even live in NY until a few months before she started campaigning, and now Caroline Kennedy, who has less experience than even Hillary did. At least Hillary was 1st lady. - pashdown, on 01/05/2009, -2/+12New York's seat can go empty though. Schumer needs the elbow room.
- DustinHill, on 01/05/2009, -0/+10Given the way our government has been restructured, it matters quite a bit to me who gets into the Senate.
- david76, on 01/05/2009, -1/+10Nutcase? He's actually pretty smart. I met him years ago in an airport. He was pouring over a stack of newspapers. He had 10 or so spread around him on the floor. So, it's not like he's an idiot.
BTW, I was saying the same thing back in Nov 2003 about Bush. - JigoroKano, on 01/05/2009, -0/+9The Senate can call for a revote but it doesn't have any actual power to demand one.
- EtherGnat, on 01/05/2009, -1/+10I want you to look in that mirror, and I want you to repeat after me: "I am a worthy human being."
/waits with marshmallow on a stick. Mmm, s'mores. - uncertainty, on 01/05/2009, -7/+15Wait, what? I'm a fan of Schumer and Franken, but who the hell is Chuck to decide who the Minn. senator is? This sounds like some crazy ***** republicans would pull. Count ALL the votes, then let's see who won.
- DustinHill, on 01/05/2009, -2/+10"At this point you're really not worth anything more than a hearty go ***** yourself."
That's all he's ever been good for. Nobody trolls like Jimmy. My children's children will speak of the waste of a load called JimmySpaza. - YZBot, on 01/05/2009, -2/+10The only thing that is clear is that we Minnesotan are being screwed. I'm not talking about the outcome of the election either. I couldn't care less at this point in time who the winner is. We are being screwed by the process. Are we going to count all the legitimate votes or not? That was the plan. Reality is different though, both Franken and Coleman managaed to have the courts take 200 wrongly rejected absentee ballots out of the mix. These are otherwise good votes, but they won't be counted. At first Coleman wanted to exclude the absentee ballots. Now that Franken is ahead, Franken wants to dismiss the extra absentee ballots that Coleman now wants included. If you think the process speaks for the voter, you couldn't be more wrong.

Things like precincts with more votes than people who came in to vote stinks. It's fairly obvious that the challenged ballot process went fairly smoothly and that obvious Franken and Coleman votes were counted as such. I'm mostly shocked at the inconsistent manner in which overvote and undervote conditions were handled. - Samurai77, on 01/05/2009, -1/+9Not a fan of a loud mouth unfunny jerk?....no not a fan
- mkokes, on 01/05/2009, -0/+8I'm from MN and one thing if anything that I got out of all of this is "Hey my vote really did count" a handful of people could have really swayed the vote from one candidate to another in this one.
That being said I don't think another election would fix any problems with bad ballets, there's still going to be people that just can seem to figure out how to fill out a circle on a piece of paper. If you ask me those should be thrown out, do we really want people that can fail at something so simple selecting the leaders of our government?? - waldo686, on 01/05/2009, -1/+8Don't blame me, I voted for Kotos
- evilbob333, on 01/05/2009, -0/+6New York's second seat will be fill by Chuck Schumer's ego.
- Elranzer, on 01/05/2009, -0/+6You realize that "your" Senator simply means it's a MN-picked Senator, but he still affects the entire nation, since he is elected at the federal level.
- Elranzer, on 01/05/2009, -2/+8"I'm sick of blanket forgiveness and smug reporters that don't do their job if there is a (D) after a persons name. troll"
You mean like Mark Foley (D-FL)? Oh wait... - deema1, on 01/05/2009, -4/+10I think it's pretty irresponsible of Schumer to declare victory so quickly. It's like the sports teams that wins the game at the buzzer on a controversial play and then runs into the locker room as quickly as possible hoping that seals the deal.
Whomever wins the Minnesota election deserves to be seated quickly, but trying to declare victory so the other guy concedes is an embarrassment. Maybe Schumer and his co-workers should concentrate on one of the millions of other problems plaguing the country right now.
Schumer is a skunk who puts partisanship before the good of the people. It'd be nice if he actually accomplished something other than partisan victories. - Griberal, on 01/05/2009, -11/+16Of coarse Schumer wants him seated now. He's afraid that when it's discovered that a lot of votes for Franken were counted multiple times, the country will see how the Democrats have stolen this election. Disgraceful.
- twinklyJesus, on 01/05/2009, -7/+12What? A whack-o NY Dem declares a whack-o MN candidate the winner? How can that happen?
- normalkid0615, on 01/05/2009, -5/+10beekeepers must be pretty smart not to get stung by all those bees.
- Seemefearme, on 01/05/2009, -2/+7No Republican should ever quip about election fraud, less they feel like looking like a fool.
- macmcraeart, on 01/05/2009, -2/+7Self respect? Diggers? What the hell is that?
i'm just drawing you nearer so the upcoming punch is more powerful. :-) - OwdenBowden, on 01/05/2009, -0/+5As a life long New Yorker, I can Proudly say: ***** SCHUMER!
- Gev1982, on 01/05/2009, -6/+11Shut up hypocrite. There has been no indication of wrongdoing here. Sick of this smug republican *****.
- Hydroxyethyl, on 01/05/2009, -1/+6I seem to remember Coleman stating that he would "step back" from a recount to save taxpayer's money (if he were in Franken's position). Now is his chance.
http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2008/ ... - EtherGnat, on 01/05/2009, -0/+5"In a revote people should only be able to choose between Coleman and Franken."
In a re-vote, people should be able to vote for whomever Minnesota says they can vote for--you can't change the rules because it's expedient. Laws vary from state to state. - laserdog, on 01/05/2009, -1/+6Hrm, I can't seem to figure out who actually *wrote* that article?
In any case, it does some cherry picking, but the breakdown is essentially:
Votes gained through the first three supposedly "dubious" rulings: 100, 46, 37. = 183 < 250.
The last accusation, about standards for absentee ballots:
"Counties were supposed to review their absentees and create a list of those they believed were mistakenly rejected. Many Franken-leaning counties did so, submitting 1,350 ballots to include in the results. But many Coleman-leaning counties have yet to complete a re-examination."
I fail to see how that was the fault of the board. If counties didn't submit the ballots after 2 months, what are you supposed to do?
A uniform standard would have been nice, but would have probably meant the same sort of "waiting for the tiny backwaters to submit everything" issue...
In any case, the fact that this article didn't mention that the governor of MN is a republican, and no doubt has some oversight ability, not to mention is required to sign off on the final result, seems to dull a lot of the accusations for me.
At this point I think Coleman's strategy is to fuel the "it's a corrupt process!" meme, because he knows the votes just don't favor him, no matter how they get counted. - pathouston22, on 01/05/2009, -4/+8http://senaterecount.startribune.com/ballots/index ...
One example. Challenged by Franken, awarded to nobody by the Canvassing board. - malschla, on 01/05/2009, -0/+4It was in the Star Tribune (Minneapolis paper). They showed 25 ballots and had you vote on who you thought it went to. Then they showed the actual results. It was pretty disturbing. The point of the article was to show how tough it was to decide on many of the ballots.
- Samurai77, on 01/05/2009, -1/+5Franklin who? Ben?
It's Franken you dolt! - TheSwashbuckler, on 01/05/2009, -1/+5Next time, keep up with ALL of the events, not just the part that you like:
On Saturday, the Coleman campaign had asked for an injunction to stop the counting of 32 absentee ballots in Minneapolis that had not been delivered on Election Day. A judge declined to grant the injunction, and Knaak said Monday that "we've heard enough from the city attorney to let go of this. It does not appear that there was any ballot-tampering, and that was our concern."
http://www.startribune.com/politics/national/senat ... - trejrco, on 01/05/2009, -3/+7Remember - it is who counts the vote, not the vote or voters, that matter. /sarcasm.
(If you don't win, just keep "recounting" ... worked for Gregoire, didn't it?) - laserdog, on 01/05/2009, -3/+7I live in MN and read the papers every day.
What allegations of "vote tampering" are you referring to?
The only allegations even close to fraud involve the Coleman camp's relatively lame accusation that a 100 some votes got double counted for Franken.
Even so, that wouldn't change the outcome.
I'm confused how you think they could perpetrate fraud under the nose of a Republican governor, and with all disputed ballots being available online? - DustinHill, on 01/05/2009, -4/+8@pathouston22
While at first I couldn't figure out why that would have been tossed out I realized that it had a slash through it (which is a common way to negate something written) and it doesn't appear that the other votes on that ballot have the slash through them. It's just a thought. - Gev1982, on 01/05/2009, -4/+8Just because you disagree with what I said doesn't make me a troll. The fact that you are insinuating that the democrats are getting a little help from a "ballot fairy" is kind of insulting. Perhaps GWB had the support of all the ballot fairies in Ohio? Florida? Where were all the diligent republicans in making sure that the ballots were secure? Oh, thats right...they were posing as people who cared about the country. Take that stick out of your ass.
- EtherGnat, on 01/05/2009, -0/+4But it can, to the best of my knowledge, refuse to seat a Senator if they're not satisfied with the election, which would lead to a stalemate.
