- davidryal, on 08/19/2008, -6/+148how do you inflate bandwagonwheels?
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -12/+142So you guys actually believe that tire inflation will not reduce gas consumption? Wow. Even McCain no longer holds that position.
- grumpyrain, on 08/20/2008, -0/+120Under inflated tyres have a significantly higher rolling resistance which acts to decelerate the vehicle. Furthermore, the flexing of the tyre wall absorbs energy. To compensate for this deceleration, more energy needs to be provided than you would otherwise need to maintain a cruising speed Obviously, that means you are burning more fuel. Over-inflated tyres may increase efficiency to a point, but it will cause uneven tyre wear significantly reducing the useful life of your tyres. Under inflated tyres perform worse in emergency braking than correct pressure.
Call it a bandwagon, I call it common sense. Don't complain about the price of fuel unless you have correct tyre pressures. You can increase efficiency by a couple of percent (and reduce your fuel bill buy the same amount) with very little effort. - Arkavus, on 08/20/2008, -7/+79Common sense doesn't bode well with the McSame crowd.
- gringer, on 08/20/2008, -3/+73You really raced past the opposition with that tyred comment!
- jeremyduffy, on 08/20/2008, -2/+66I'm confused. Wasn't this completely common knowledge already?
- theaceoffire, on 08/20/2008, -2/+61He's never steered us wrong before! Works great under pressure, and will never tire in his attempt to wheelie make a difference.
- Janv1er, on 08/20/2008, -0/+53Try pushing a wheelbarrow with a badly inflated tire, it's much harder.
- TeflonDom, on 08/20/2008, -1/+50Don't tread on Obama
- gyronic, on 08/20/2008, -11/+60Only in America,
"energy policy = educating the public." - Lynx55, on 08/20/2008, -33/+80It's a big bandwagon..the more the merrier!! Arnold for Obama!
OBAMA 08 - The Intelligent Vote - BrewBeau, on 08/20/2008, -1/+45If he keeps this momentum up, it'll be a blowout in November.
- cdawzrd, on 08/20/2008, -0/+43You didn't buy enough bandwagonwheels and you die of dysentery.
- tbhurst, on 08/20/2008, -5/+46I don't know... hot air?
- Petes256, on 08/20/2008, -8/+49I wonder if the Straight Talk Express has had its tires checked lately?
- pintomp3, on 08/20/2008, -3/+40i wonder how the mccain camp will spinner this. america is tired of running on DUByas.
- Coven, on 08/20/2008, -3/+33Yet the right wing is lambasting Obama for his opinion. He's telling the obvious truth yet the right wing talk machine is making it out like inflating your tires doesn't increase fuel economy by the same amount that increased drilling would increase the oil supply.
- pintomp3, on 08/20/2008, -0/+26if only that were our economic policy as well.
- dsenman, on 08/20/2008, -0/+26Things that will also reduce gas consumption:
- Proper wheel alignment
- Clean air filters
- Windows up over 50 mph
So basically, common sense and taking proper care of your vehicle. - LimeParrot, on 08/20/2008, -5/+30So... how does this work exactly? Better inflated tire means less friction or something?
- buckrogers1965, on 08/20/2008, -0/+24Also properly inflated tires last a lot longer than under inflated tires. So you save money and oil on not having to buy new tires. If a tire is under inflated that will flex it's sidewalls a lot more and cause the tire to fail much earlier than they should. Sometimes the failure will be at highway speeds and cause the drivers to loose control of their vehicle.
- LimeParrot, on 08/20/2008, -1/+25Thanks.
- pdizz, on 08/20/2008, -1/+25How dare he suggest that people can do simple things on their own to improve their gas mileage instead of demanding government intervention! Next he'll be telling us to frequently replace out air filters!
- SPThom, on 08/20/2008, -3/+26If this is an "Obama bandwagon", then I guess my driver's ed instructor was on the Obama-wagon... a full ten years ago.
- bjs3171, on 08/20/2008, -0/+22and when a few million people save a couple gallons per year, that adds up to a pretty damn significant gasoline saving.
- EatSleepJeep, on 08/20/2008, -4/+24You're as callous as you are ignorant.
- paulmer2003, on 08/20/2008, -1/+22No *****? If you have your tires underinflated you're going to have more rolling resistance etcetc.
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -1/+20I'll be back... with compressed air.
- archer104, on 08/20/2008, -7/+26C-C-C-COMBO BRAKER!!!
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -1/+19Remind me scoot, what is McCain offering?
- rlbigfish, on 08/20/2008, -9/+27If voters were intelligent they'd stop voting for politicians.
- MattB123, on 08/20/2008, -3/+21Excellent example of willful ignorance.
Your mother must be so proud.
Hooray for idiots! - Dotcommer, on 08/20/2008, -1/+18My oxen died while fording the river with those bandwagon wheels... :'(
- rdoger6424, on 08/20/2008, -2/+18better than not educating the public
- treas, on 08/20/2008, -3/+18wait wait, you're knocking a candidate for offering hope and change from a failing economy, a failed occupation of Iraq, and a trampling of our constitution?
holy ***** *****, what an awful platform. - inactive, on 08/20/2008, -6/+21Thought you types didn't believe in polls - oh that's right, only if they are in your favor.
- teaaker, on 01/25/2009, -3/+18Tyre?
- talonstriker, on 08/20/2008, -0/+13@futbball, it appears that's how it is spelled in British-english speaking/spelling countries.
- MattB123, on 08/20/2008, -1/+13You say that like the general public would actually understand the physics behind it!
- russ3, on 08/20/2008, -5/+17Wow this article makes it sound like obama invented proper tire inflation, and that agreeing with him about a simple scientific fact is equivalent to agreeing to his entire political philosophy.
- bjs3171, on 08/20/2008, -2/+13why do you think he's racist?
and he may be a republican, but I wouldn't call him a neocon, and as a strong environmental reform supporter, i'd say he's pretty moderate. - Zandarrr, on 08/20/2008, -7/+19Can't we just let this tire ordeal die?
- Mononuclear, on 08/20/2008, -1/+12lol FLUX is that why they handed out the air pressure gauges? Is that why McCain mocked Obama for suggesting the idea? McCain thought inflating your tires was stupid until he got hammered for it and realized that it works and most people think it is a great idea.. then he quietly accepted the facts and admitted it was a good idea.
- theOster, on 08/20/2008, -0/+10with a wooden pump
- Aethirig, on 08/20/2008, -2/+12I have an axle to grind with you.
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -2/+12And you're not labeling people right now? Let's take a look at your posting history....
"I couldn't have said it any better. The reactions here just show you how many people here are sheep and believe all the hype they've been seeing about obama"
" would say you're brain dead since you are an obvious far left sycophant, repeating the same *****, here, to ad nauseam. Such a ***** rebel"
Nope, no hypocrisy here, no sir. - inactive, on 08/20/2008, -0/+10Okay, let's try this:
(1) Let the air out of your bicycle tires and pedal around the block.
(2) Inflate your bicycle tires to their recommended PSI and pedal around the block.
(3) Decide which was easier.
If it takes more energy to pedal around the block with deflated tires, it's going to take more energy to drive your car this way. Gasoline provides this energy through the magic of a combustion engine. When more energy is required, more gasoline is burned. - dext3r, on 08/20/2008, -0/+10None of these facts are fun at all.
- Brownds, on 08/20/2008, -1/+10@Flushnasty
Arnold is the best governor we have had in a long time he is drawing a line against the corrupt California Legislators that like to spend more money then the state bring in and their only answer is to increase taxes on a already over taxed population. But I blame the California voters that keep re-electing the Democrat douche bags that have ruined our state. Vote the ***** vacuums out! -
