- dsmyre, on 03/26/2008, -3/+22Hillary can't say anything right this week. Maybe God is trying to tell her something.
- zmedico, on 03/26/2008, -5/+22In case anybody hasn't seen these yet, the following videos illustrate how FOX took short video clips out of context in what seems like an effort to make Rev. Wright look bad:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOdlnzkeoyQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvMbeVQj6Lw
There is sweet irony in that FOX's and others' attempts to polarize and divide people seems to be backfiring as more people take the time to analyze Rev. Wrights preachings and come to realize the terrible misrepresentation that has occurred. - smotpoker, on 03/26/2008, -6/+20Obviously a hater of Whites, God and America!
- alloystudios, on 03/26/2008, -2/+15I still don't understand the assertion that Obama sat idly by watching his pastor say these things for 20 years. I've seen about 50 seconds of total footage of him saying some off the wall things, but that's not much compared to 20 years of sermons. And considering their services have been televised for some time, I'm sure somebody went through every single tape to dig up dirt...and this is all they found?
If all you have on somebody is something SOMEBODY ELSE said, then you don't have much. - hchukuka, on 03/26/2008, -1/+12clinton listen to ur spiritual leader ooooohh....
- brufleth, on 03/26/2008, -1/+11Dude, I'm not Christian and think this is all silly but if you ARE Christian or even have a tiny hint of a critical mind you should be able to at LEAST pick out the metaphor. Here let me help.
Skin color aside Jesus was supposed to have been a Jew which put him at odds with those in political and financial power. So it isn't much of a stretch to relate Jesus's place with that of a black man in the US before the civil rights movement and in some respects even today.
You also might notice that he finishes by saying he still loves his enemies. So even though black people in the US have been stepped on (see: Slavery) like Jesus was (see: crucifixion) he can still love those that have wronged him and forgiven them for their actions (again like Jesus was suppose to have done).
My word man! I hope you were being ironic or something. Get it the F together otherwise. Learn a little bit about US history and Christianity before getting all pissed at a guy for encouraging forgiveness and love for each other. - basickler, on 03/26/2008, -1/+10First off I'm an athiest.
And like others here, I gave Wright the benefit of the doubt and watched a few videos of his that fox and cnn pulled the sound bytes from. What I found was a very well spoken man delivering some of the most inspirational speeches I've seen in a church. Something else you might wanna watch to get a clear idea of where Obama stands on religion and state is this. http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid35 ... Most politicians simply use religion as a tool. To talk about it's many layers and impact on American society is almost unheard of. - Coven, on 03/26/2008, -5/+1330 second soundbites can tell you all about a man's life's work as a pastor, eh? I guarantee, you take anybody, the next person you walk past, record them for a while and you can find a soundbite taken out of context to make them sound as though they have any position on any subject.
- inactive, on 03/26/2008, -7/+14"Those "soundbites" tell you ALL you need to know about Obama's mentor of 20 years"
Yep. They tell me he's absolutely correct in his assessment of America. How about that, we agree, vuuv. - sqwirl, on 03/26/2008, -0/+7"As far as I am aware Obama has yet to say anything against Farrakhan"
You mean besides rejecting and denouncing him? What else do you want? - smotpoker, on 03/26/2008, -3/+10I used to fully concur but then I heard some of Wright's sermons... now that I've seen true righteousness in religion in America for the first time, I am starting to reconsider my previous "Christ would not support Christianity" beliefs
Should still be distinct from most legislation but in some cases it can be truly inspirational and empowering - smotpoker, on 03/26/2008, -3/+10I second that! Insult Ell3, not us humble stoners or magnificent almighty cannabis plant!
- sqwirl, on 03/26/2008, -3/+10That's an insult to people who smoke pot, as they tend to make a lot more sense than Ell3.
- ThirdWizard, on 03/26/2008, -0/+6People just need to start accepting the fact that a lot of black people, especially old black people, are rightly angry. Obama doesn't have to distance himself from Wright because black people simply weren't shocked by this stuff. Doing so would only be distancing himself from black culture, which would be kind of silly, so Obama rightly decided to try to help people understand where Wright was coming from instead of denouncing him. Yes, Wright might make people feel uncomfortable. That's okay, though. The people who would feel uncomfortable weren't the ones he was talking to. Denying something doesn't make it go away, and understanding race issues is important to continuing to bring all groups together in America.
- nirav72, on 03/26/2008, -0/+6"Obama has been linked in for various reasons at different times."
Source?
Obama might have been linked via his Church (please provide a reputable source). Until you do, its not considered a direct link. Come back when Farrakhan joins the Obama campaign..until then..you're just spouting typical right wing *****. - nirav72, on 03/26/2008, -5/+10Burying Ell3 as usual. She's *****-for-brains christian nut case. (the fanatic kind)
- jdotter, on 03/26/2008, -0/+5Wow, that couldn't be a more inaccurate summary of Barack Obama. He distanced himself from this pastor because the media turned him into a wacko not when he decided to run. Yeah, some of the stuff Wright said was way out of line but most of the clips you see were from a pretty well thought out and rational sermon. He has talked openly and regularly about his affiliation with this church and even the pastor. The step-father he knew best was a Muslim and Barack was agnostic or secular in his beliefs until he began organizing with this and other churches in Chicago back in the eighties. Of all the accounts of his rise in the Illinois legislature nobody every described him as a black politician. He was applauded for working with both parties to get stuff done. Do a bit of your own research, check the Chicago Tribune or other Chicago based papers and read up on him a bit. You'd be surprised to find out that this Columbia and Harvard educated man was successful based on his body of work not the color of his skin. Ah, the good old days of November and December when Barack Obama wasn't black enough to get the support of African-Americans, Rev. Wright was a outspoken pastor Barack disagreed with but a tleast had explained himself to the media over the whole crazy sermon thing and everyone in Iowa had moved on. Oh how times have changed....
- UknowWho97, on 03/26/2008, -5/+10So I guess if I met you for about 20 seconds, that would tell me ALL I need to know about you too huh? How ignorant can you be
- Spektr4, on 03/26/2008, -4/+9Hypocrisy of Sean Hannity.
"You know, no other person is responsible for what a person says except that person. And so, if they have a problem with what Ann Coulter says, blame Ann Coulter. You can't blame somebody else for what she said," - Sean Hannity, responding to Ann Coulter's public use of the term "*****" at CPAC's conference last year. (BTW, Sean himself remains friends w/ Ann Coulter despite all the ***** crazy stuff she says)
Here is Hannity defending Jerry Falwell, despite what Falwell said after 9/11:
HITCHENS: I think we have been rid of an extremely dangerous demagogue who lived by hatred of others, and prejudice, and who committed treason by saying that the United States deserved the attack upon it and its civil society of September of 2001 by other religious nut cases like himself.
HANNITY: He profoundly and repeatedly apologized. And I'm sure you're perfect.
HITCHENS: No, he did not enough.
HANNITY: I'm sure you're perfect in your life and that you've never made any mistakes.
HITCHENS: I've never committed treason like that. I don't believe in the sincerity of his apology.
HANNITY: I knew Reverend Falwell, Christopher. I know the good work that this man has done.
HITCHENS: Tell me about it.
HANNITY: Well...
HITCHENS: Takes a lot to make me cry.
HANNITY: I know you think you're the smartest guy in the room, but you sound like a jackass when you attack his family like this. But I know...
HITCHENS: I didn't attack his family. Excuse me.
HANNITY: ... what he did for unwed mothers. I know what he did for alcoholics. I know what he did for drug addicts. - smotpoker, on 03/26/2008, -0/+5iamjames -
It astounds me how you guys do all this smear campaigning BS knowing it is wrong and paints an incomplete picture to portray an unintended message while accusing everyone of doing exactly the same thing. You are truly ***** disgusting. ***** like you keep everyone running around disproving your lies and misdirections and figuring them out it is no wonder our country is falling apart.
Go eat a *****.
For those who care to know the point this man was trying to make, you have to see the context people such as iamjames try to keep hidden from you:
http://digg.com/2008_us_elections/CNN_MSNBC_LIED_s ...
http://youtube.com/watch?v=JKUTQJfJIfY
http://youtube.com/watch?v=3Ec_um8cts0
You may have a hard time with that search string iamjames provided. Youtube has been flooded by conservative morons who are either too stupid to do a search before submitting a video or too vindictive to consider letting legitimate videos with Wright's real message to seep through. Go ahead and look, you'll see they are all replications and compilations of the same 3-4 sound bytes with like 10-15 seconds of questionable sermons (obtained after abcnews dugg through years of footage)
Here is the youtube page for his church, Trinity:
http://youtube.com/user/TRINITYCHGO
Also keep in mind Chicago is probably one of the two or three most racist and segregated cities in the U.S.
Check out the government and police corruption:
http://hrw.org/reports98/police/uspo52.htm - smotpoker, on 03/26/2008, -0/+4He isn't a crackpot, he is awesome! He knows Hannity is a super-douche and wasn't gonna let him lead the debate (especially before getting the stuff about not being separatist or supremist in) haha. His point with that statement is that in a predominantly white society, specifying whether a given institution/philosophy is "white" is moot unless you are contrasting with another that is not white
- nirav72, on 03/26/2008, -1/+5Who's connection with Farrakhan? Obama or Wright? Obama has no connection with Farrakhan. He event rejected Farrakhan's endorsement. Wright might have had a connection. not sure.
- TajesMahoney, on 03/26/2008, -0/+4"Moreover, there seems to be confusion as to exactly what church Clinton now attends. Her campaign did not return requests for comment."
- inactive, on 03/26/2008, -5/+8Wrong again.
- thinkverybig, on 03/26/2008, -1/+4Hillary is just desperate to become President and will do anything to get the nomination. I will never support this lying woman.
- inactive, on 03/26/2008, -5/+8That is a wonderfully singular line from this whole controversy. Mr Wright is exactly correct. 9-11 is the result of 200 years of American racist policy coming home to roost. I agree completely with his assessment. It's funny how we on the left have been trying to shout that point for years and the right wing media ends up putting it on every television in an attempt to damage Barack Obama, a guy who votes to fund the war crimes in Iraq.
Damn, life is funny sometimes. - LupeFiasco, on 03/26/2008, -1/+4I still do not get why the FULL clips of pastor wright are not getting mainstream play. Or is it just the outlets I am looking at?
This is a serious offense and needs to get out there.....
Daily Show? Colbert Report?
If they don't do it now then I don't think it is ever gonna get on TV. - Turambar, on 03/26/2008, -3/+6on the whole, i'd really prefer if they didn't highlight faith so much. as someone who looks down on religion in general, this just makes me feel even more that none of the candidates are fit to lead a nation.
- smotpoker, on 03/26/2008, -0/+3ZOMG!!! THEM NEGROES DON'T AGREE ON EVERYTHANG!!! LOOK AT THIS BUBBA!!!
- inactive, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2Hillary Clinton is a racist with ties to radical Islam.
- morpheousx, on 03/26/2008, -2/+4This is exactly what white folks are doing all over america, not understanding what black folks are saying when they talk about being african american in america, they just don't get it and they don't because they choose not to or they just don't care enough to try becasue they have what us african americans call"white privilege"in this country, where white folks have lived so long without any type of descrimination, oppression, persecution, deprivation, poverty, equality that they are totally ignorant to anything other than what they have experienced in their life,so they make remarks like "they are just complaining becasue they are poor and envy rich white folks and playing the race card" The quote from Mr wright that iamjames posted was implied as negative statement by his remark"this is the guy you're trying to defend?" what in the world is wrong with what he said? I'll clearify a little for you friend,he is saying that he is living and preaching by jesus's example of being poor and living among rich people,he feels good knowing that jesus went through what he(Mr. wright himeself) and every single african american who has ever lived in this country and around the world go though and that he as a follower of jesus has not done onto others, what has been done onto him. Being a christian, one of the many things we are taught is to love our enemies, turn the other cheek, kill with kindness. I find it odd that whenever somone speaks the obvious about the white race being in control of this country, they twist it as if its a negative statement when its only the truth, guess some white folks in this contry have a guilty conscience.
I don't have a racist bone in my body,i treat every single person as a induvidual. - rick02840, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2"Youtube has been flooded by conservative morons who are either too stupid to do a search before submitting a video or too vindictive to consider letting legitimate videos with Wright's real message to seep through."
Man... I could not agree with you more. The number of shoot-first-listen-later (or never) morons that out there is scary. - inactive, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2Ell, are you still taking those shock treatments?
Up the voltage. - smotpoker, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2Gotta repaste the link homedog. For future reference, digg truncates longer urls if you edit your post
- smotpoker, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2Terr01 - Maybe to you it seems a bit much, but in Chicago there really is a lot of corruption in the government and the police force even since civil rights movement it is still rather segregated. Search google for "chicago corruption" and you'll catch a hint
Besides the true racism that still exists, there is a fair amount resentment from middle class due to affirmative action and social security abuses that have led to stiffer regulations and penalties that have made a hard situation worse.
Since these penalties mostly affect only minorities and in many cases either intentionally or negligently make it much harder for them to obtain legitimate employment, they are not completely unjust in their perception that support of such laws may be racially and/or choose spending money out of spite (more jails and longer sentencing) for minor crimes rather than prevention (rehab and education)
A perfect example is federal aid regulations that until recently barred anyone convicted of any drug crime from financial aid (now it is only limited to violations that occur while already receiving financial aid) - Spoomeister, on 03/26/2008, -1/+2It will take all of 2 or 3 days for Hillary to say, "Well, see? I don't go to that church anymore. So what Rev. Stein says is irrelevant. I don't attend a church that agrees with Rev. Wright. Elect me. Or I'll cry again."
- allisonberryart, on 03/26/2008, -2/+3And you don't consider yourselves to be hate-mongerers?
- buddywlkr3, on 03/26/2008, -2/+3This is unbelievable! Now we are supposed to believe that the Reverend Wright was simply taken out of context when he said that they were living in the land of USKKK? He was taken out of context when he said that whites infected the black population with AIDS to exterminate them? Those seemed like pretty clear statements on the tapes that I saw. And those tapes were on DVDs that the church itself made available. What could possibly be the context in which those statements would be acceptable? For a race baiting mob that seems perfectly willing to crucify Geraldine Ferarro, Don Imus or Rush Limbaugh over brief statements, it seems very strange that behavior from a black pastor who says things repeatedly over years and years is somehow OK. Why?
- iamjames, on 03/26/2008, -2/+3Here's Wright's response after the tapes were released:
".... United States of White America..."
http://youtube.com/watch?v=aNTGRL0OJWQ
Wright's a crackpot but he makes for good TV ;) - youareretarded, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1Same here. I was expecting to see something along the lines of sermons from Falwell and the like except about whites and not about gays and Muslims but I didn't. What wright said not only made sense but was also told in such a way that no hatred was encouraged.
Whether you agree with wrights views or not what he said was not anti-American or anti-whitey and If you do view it that way then you are denying American history. - inactive, on 03/27/2008, -1/+2Who are you talking to? Me? I'm not a group, just one person.
I don't hate anyone. I despise certain ideas, theories, words, and actions, but never the person.
I wonder if Stein and Wright feel the same way. Given their diatribes, I kind of doubt it. - SamuelHenderson, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1controle is wrong?
:) - chapbaby, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1I would like someone to comment on the branch of the military that Chris Matthews, Hardball served in. Rev. Wright was a marine. No one seems to have an answer to that.
- smotpoker, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1.
- inactive, on 03/27/2008, -2/+3I don't like McCain nor will vote for him, but would put $$$ on him if I were a betting man.
- smotpoker, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1US of KKK A is his interpretation of a country that permits legislation and officials that routinely hurt/disregard minority communities and other cultures. Google for "Jeremiah Wright" and becomes easy to see he is right.
Everyone refuses to consider context in the slightest regard. You are all liar drama-queen racists who will refuse to even reconsider your position now that it is established. You guys had a chance to do the right thing. Too bad you don't know how.
Keep spreading the filth - Rodman930, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Doesn't Ron Paul say the same thing all the time in the media is OK with it? (mostly because he is right)
- seektruth77, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Did Hillary run through a war zone moment flashback to her harrowing trip to Bosnia when her pastor said this? No she must have misspoke again! PTSD!
- Terr01, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1What's lacking there is the relationship to 9-11. I highly doubt any of the hijackers were particularly motivated by US domestic stuff from the civil rights era, let alone making any distinctions between the skin color.
