- AriaStar, on 10/12/2007, -19/+113By making him into a martyr? Forcing him to spend the rest of his life working hard labor would be better. Make him wish he were dead. Instead, he will go down in glory to those who will raise him up.
- garza, on 10/12/2007, -17/+62I guess they want to get '07 off on the right foot.
- Zenithan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+42Remember, boys and girls, only try to be a grammar nazi if you actually know your stuff.
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -2/+40Thanks for the notice, I need to have my Saddam commemorative toast ready for eBay.
- CaptShmo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+40maybe they'll drop him along with the ball times square
- hannahmar, on 06/11/2009, -1/+32@Cleanlyness
Actually, quite the opposite. People are hanged, things are hung. - TheoDork, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30For executions, it's "hanged," for anything else, such as a picture, it's "hung."
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -20/+48nope. I don't care what his death does to others, this guy deserves to die no matter what. Immediately, or else when a new government comes into power they could free him, etc.
more importantly, is this going to be televised? - modpancake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23@Cleanlyness: Wrong. Also, "cleanliness" would be the correct spelling for your username, in case you thought you had that right too.
- gwinerreniwg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Hoping Bagdad doesn't light up like a powder keg...
- Elxx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22This is going to be the most-viewed YouTube video ever.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23Prisoner of war? Didn't you hear? The war's over! Mission Accomplished!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+26The guy is being hanged for killing 148 of his own people. He should be getting a medal for keeping that country from disintegrating into civil war and killing as few of his own people as he did in the process. We sure haven't been able to do it. We should actually hire him as a consultant.
Ironically, it was Saddam's own strength as a leader that tripped him up when it came to defending himself in court. He kept that country in line by ***** a lot. Just like he told us we were going to drown in a sea of blood and be engulfed by swarming hordes of the mightiest killing machine the world had ever seen. He was really, really good at generating a line of ***** that played well to the fears of his people. We co-opted all that stuff for our own propaganda machine and now everyone talks about him like he was some mythical Force of Evil. Not that he was a nice guy or anything, but look at what our own We're-only-here-to-help, I'm-OK-You're-OK philosophy is getting us in Iraq. They've made us their bitch. They need a screaming tyrant claiming that he's going to erase their bloodline from the planet if they cross him. That they can respect, if not exactly love.
The worst part is that if Saddam hadn't taken over Kuwait and cost a lot of American companies a lot of money we'd still be funneling him weapons and it would generally be a Good Thing. Saddam was a raving madman tyrant, but his whole song-and-dance was secular and having him on Iran's border worked out pretty well for us. Now we've gotta deal with Iraq *and* Iran and neither of them are going to listen to our pleas for Anger Management training.
We have to be so politically correct in the way we deal with the Good Enemies and the Bad Enemies that we can't really deal with *any* enemies anymore. - Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16"Earlier Thursday, Saddam’s chief lawyer implored world leaders to prevent the United States from handing over the ousted leader to Iraqi authorities for execution, saying the former dictator should enjoy protection from his enemies as a “prisoner of war.”
'According to the international conventions, it is forbidden to hand a prisoner of war to his adversary,' Saddam’s lawyer, Khalil al-Dulaimi, said in Amman, Jordan."
So the former Iraqi dictator sees his country as his "adversary?" That's great. He should have been taken care of in Desert Storm. - bkdb9, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I hope it's on in high-def. Simply because everything looks better in high-def.
- stelriah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14"Sunday to hang Saddam"
- hoppdawg, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17Well this is intelligent. I'm sure it will do nothing but help the war on terror.
- RileyKA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Um... He was sentenced to hang by an Iraqi Court. His entire legal proceedings were done through the Iraqi judicial system, the US did not put him on trial the US did not sentence him to death and the US will not be carrying out the death sentence, all of these were done by a jury of his peers (AKA The people of Iraq) in an Iraqi Court presided over by an Iraqi Judge. The only part the US played was to capture him and turn him over to the Iraqi Government for trial on accusations of War Crimes.
- Area51mafia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I think it's "hung" if it's an object, like "I hung up the shirt."
"Hanged" if it's hanging somebody for execution.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanging#Grammar - gkoberger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9the submitter was right, its hanged, not hung...
EDIT: TheoDork beat me to it... - Jofaba, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Why? This one already has more diggs.
So will it be televised? You know that's the burning question. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@super
I hope to god that you are kidding. - kurupt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Broadcast in 1080i?
I totally don't know what that means, but I want it. - D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm sorry, what?
- bede, on 10/12/2007, -9/+15"He should have been taken care of in Desert Storm."
It seems that George senior, at least, knew what a bad idea that was. - mrkmrk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I'm not saying that I support anything that Saddam did, but I must ask: what good can come from this?
- tim507, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5are you serious? any money it will be online within 2 hours of hanging if not a live feed.
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6RTFA.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6observe the "enlightened" countries (and U.S. states) still butchering their criminals: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fc/Death_Penalty_World_Map2.png
- Caprica, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Then you're no better than he is/was.
- drk1t, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7 Kangaroo.............................................................................................................................................court
- PhairOh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I thought so too, at first. Then, when I read the article, I saw that they used "hanged" throughout the entire thing. I'm not quite sure why that is the proper way to say it, but apparently it is.
- JayG25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If Hitler didnt kill himself would they be having this same argument?
- x00x, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Death by hanging is nowhere severe enough when the enormity of his crimes against humanity is put in proper perspective.
Having him slowly, way too slowly lowered through one of his favorite toys, the mammoth industrial shredder feet first as were
countless of his victims.would be a great place to start. - Spaceboy492, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Jofaba: It'll probably have better ratings than Arrested Development. :(
- madpoet, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8We aren't the ones doing it. This is all in the Iraqis' hands.
- eiuquor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7if i believed that humans have the right to take a life, i would agree with you. gwb has already caused the death of as many, if not more iraquis and americans than the kurds saddam had gassed.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Aria...hate to tell you, but Saddam has NO friends except for the tiny minority of Iraqis. Other Muslim countries hate him. All other countries hate him. He will not be a martyr.
- venicerocco, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Any killing is a victory for barbarism and a loss for civilization.
- klinellyred, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Is this going to be on public television or will I have to hunt on youtube for the video?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12oh man this is going to be immediately on youtube!
*gets ready to submit the youtube link to digg* - licoricewhip, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I am hung, but, you don't see me on the front page...
- PhairOh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4benoror, he has already been sentenced to death. This article is referring to the carrying out of that sentence.
- tim507, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4its the mirrors.
- kickcows, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5i wish our legal system worked as fast as this has. how long did it take for the man who supposedly had a hand in 9/11 go to trial? isn't that still going on?
and sadaam went on trial a few months ago and this is the result?
talk about speedy due process.
i'm glad he's being executed. for what he's done, its what he deserves. and then some. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4it's a ball? i always thought it was an apple... isn't that why NYC is called the big apple?
- Simcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You forgot the "/sarcasm" tag
- sckoralesky, on 10/12/2007, -13/+16Yeah, he did some pretty bad stuff, but will killing him really help? This argument will boil down to one about the death penalty. We are pretty much fundamentally flawed as humans, as we lack the wisdom to make perfect judgments, and often make mistakes as a result of emotional investments. Either way, spilling more blood is never really the best answer. (Not to make a "religious" argument, and not to say that I really care about Sadam at all. I just don’t like the death penalty.)
- EComni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Sectarian country, not secular.
/pendantic
But I also agree with Jarrodd. And the guy using the term "libtard"... wow. Who knew advocating harsh puppet dictatorships was liberal? - Jarodd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@RRJackson
"killing as few of his own people as he did in the process"
Is this a joke ? You really think those 148 people are the only victims? More like tens of thousends.
Maybe you need a top 5 : http://history1900s.about.com/od/saddamhussein/a/husseincrimes.htm
Genocide ? Use of chemicals ? Don't make me sick please. -
