- alanocu, on 07/07/2009, -22/+54Southern Methodist University - I love it when the Godly exhibit their Godliness, especially when it comes to showing respect, tolerance and the like (something they demand of those who critique and oppose their ideology).
They are so holy, so godly, so virtuous and pristine. Those who sit in their pews should sit up, take notice and emulate the behavior of their shepherds.
What a better place the world would be. - Danial, on 07/08/2009, -9/+39SMU = Small Millionaires' University
Lots of hot stuck up rich girls there, no different from USC and other private unis.
SMU kids are a bunch of spoiled crackpots who have never entered the real world. - inactive, on 07/08/2009, -3/+22How much space does it take to store all the Dr. Seuss books? I know my local library has them on like 1 or 2 shelves. Weird.
- ThinkBox, on 07/07/2009, -26/+43I live in Dallas, and graduated from SMU. A lot of my friends lived in those apartments. Most were old and crappy, really needed to be bulldozed. Yes, some old lady lived there a long time. There is ALWAYS an old lady living somewhere for a long time whenever you want to build anything (especially on tv!) But this is the only available land in that dense area. Getting a presidential library is a HUGE deal for a university, and SMU is smack in the middle of Dallas, its really hard to make room. This was the obvious choice for the spot, and the buildings they tore down were very old and in poor shape. I'm not saying they couldn't have handled it better, they definitely could have changed things up differently then how they did it. But stopping a multi-million dollar project isn't going to happen because an old lady doesn't want to move out of her home.
- SirBruce, on 07/08/2009, -5/+19Summary for those who didn't read the whole thing:
1. SMU started buying units in a condo next to the university in 1999 in order to house students.
2. Residents of the condo initially didn't like this and tried to pass a rule to prevent SMU from buying more units. SMU took them to court and the condo gave in, allowing SMU to legally buy more units.
3. SMU continued to buy more units and house students in them, and realized that this property was a viable location for a future George W. Bush Presidential Library. They set about acquiring controlling interest in the property.
4. As more condo residents moved out, SMU bought up the units until they reached the 75% specified in the condo rules that all the condo residents agreed to.
5. At 75%, SMU could now force the other residents to sell. They offered a fair market price. Some sold at that price. Others held out and got more money.
6. SMU tore down the condo to use for the GWB Presidential library.
7. Some former residents are now mad because they didn't hold out for more money or didn't realize the rules of the condo they agreed to when they moved in.
8. SMU has done nothing wrong and these people all need to go cry somewhere else. - nwoolls, on 07/08/2009, -6/+20This is just sad. I know I'll get dugg down into obscurity but...I went to SMU. So did most of my family. People go there, for the most part, because it's a good school...not because they are interested in becoming a better Methodist. If you live in Texas, and want to go to a good school locally, you try to get into SMU, Trinity, Baylor, or UT at Austin.
...and Mr. W Jr. did not come down from on high to steal land here.
I know it's very popular on Digg to slam religion and W. I'm not religious whatsoever, and have never liked what W did for this country (even though I'm from Texas). But this has nothing to do with either religion or W, outside of the names involved - eg. the "Methodist" in SMU and the "Bush" in the library name.
And, unfortunately, because those two words are throughout this bit of news, people will digg the story endlessly, and make all sorts of comments about how W ran the country and how religion is the bane of our existence - neither of which have anything to do with this respected university. - DubYaSee, on 07/08/2009, -13/+26It is only fitting and proper that the intelligence reports regarding the building site for the G. W. Bush Library at S.M.U. were erroneous. We should all be grateful that there hasn't been any loss of life and that only a few Americans have been displaced.
I suppose filthy lucre trumps knowledge and ethics every time. But I can't help feeling saddened by prestigious school like S.M.U. caving to lure of money that this Library will bring. It seems like we ought to open a Nuremberg War Criminal Theme Park right next to it. Maybe name the theme park Prescott Bush War Profiteer Land. - lhbaker, on 07/08/2009, -2/+15Couldn't they have given her fair market value, rather than buying units and filling them with students in order to drive values down?
- ohplease, on 07/08/2009, -3/+16Stealing land to build a shrine to a dictator? Jesus would have totally been behind that.
/s - casspa, on 07/07/2009, -3/+15SMU is said to be the Mecca of the Mrs. degree.
- publiclurker, on 07/08/2009, -2/+14I've heard they'll have coloring books there also.
- internetisscary, on 07/08/2009, -7/+18I know right? He was screwing us over when in office, and he's still screwing us over now.
- kasjogren, on 07/07/2009, -3/+13My little brother went there cause he got a full ride. He doesn't believe in any of that religious stuff and campaigned against this library so the original comment on the students is sort of baseless.
- charlie6969, on 07/08/2009, -5/+15Maybe they are hoping that if a library is built with his name on it, he will finally read a book.
Who knows..... - duke, on 07/08/2009, -5/+14I love it when the ignorant express their ignorance. . .
I hate religious hypocrisy as much as anyone, but you're making an assumption about the school that just isn't valid. If you want to talk about the bigotry of the righteous, fine. Go look in your own damn mirror. - inactive, on 07/07/2009, -2/+11have you ever met anyone that goes to schools like smu and tcu (tx christian uni)? i dont think they go to those schools for the religious aspects. i have to assume that most of the teachers arent there for religion either.
- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -5/+13That GW Bush, he's a hell of a guy! He made quite the bitch for Cheney.
- jimbo92107, on 07/08/2009, -3/+11If there wasn't something dirty about it, the library project would fail to capture the spirit of the Bush regime.
- haikuFU, on 07/08/2009, -8/+16Yep, and it's Dallas. Which means all of those hot rich stuck-up bitches bare that ***** on the pole and spread the pink at some of the best strip clubs in the country.
- fireinbergen, on 07/08/2009, -2/+9Is the library going to have book?
- Lst01, on 07/08/2009, -0/+7It's actually not a religious school at all. There are some conservative Christian schools in TX but SMU is not one of them
- lhbaker, on 07/08/2009, -1/+8The library will contain every book from the Bush household. It's called The Fart Book.
- Efilnikufesin, on 07/08/2009, -6/+13it's fitting considering the president who the library is dedicated to
- AWBoy666, on 07/08/2009, -3/+10If it takes 7 pages to explain how something is evil, you're stretching it.
- TobiasParker, on 07/08/2009, -1/+8He's a witch!
- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -2/+9I feel bad for that lady that got forced out of her home and all, but I also feel like that pitched narrative could've been shortened to something less than 7 pages.
- t4m5t3r, on 07/08/2009, -0/+6pretty fitting, Bush stole/ destroyed all of americas wealth, murdered its children in illegal wars, and now stole land so you remember him forever!!
The fact this man hasnt been hung is a testament to the ignorance of society!! - bludhound, on 07/08/2009, -2/+8They need the extra space for the Saddam's gun wing of the library.
- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -0/+6I don't know how one emanates domain but it sounds awfully smelly.
- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -0/+6W knew how to read? I'm shocked.
- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -4/+10SMU is a private school, Kreskin. As Duke said, it is not Eminent Domain, however, the only criminal act here is the knowing deception by a pseudo-religious Texas conservative frat-party school to deprive landowners of their property. The same frat boy attitudes that make going to such a school miserable make the school management sinister and the grown frat boys who are its products capable of war-crimes and international deception for a quick buck. Not shocking that frat-boy cesspool created both Bush and the cowboy-swaggered drunken bastards that run that particular "institution" by running decent people out of their homes.
- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -7/+13This story has "cash grab" written all over it. Pathetic.
- Heywoodj, on 07/08/2009, -2/+8Well at least he's consistent.
- duke, on 07/08/2009, -2/+81. The term is "eminent domain".
2. Eminent domain is a governmental power. SMU is a private school. It has no power of eminent domain.
3. If it DID have eminent domain (as does A&M, which has the Bush, Sr. library, and University of Texas, with the LBJ library), this whole thing would have been over in 1999, and each resident would have received, oh, maybe $100K, tops, as fair market value for run-down old condos. It's only because of the lack of eminent domain that the school has to have its project held hostage by people who are taking full advantage of the fact that owning some of the land isn't worth a whole lot if you don't own all of it.
So, I don't think you've quite honed in on the issue. - misterrock, on 07/08/2009, -2/+8A library isn't quite fitting for GW. I think he should get a monster truck stadium instead.
SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY!!! HE DESTROYED YOUR COUNTRY, NOW WATCH AS GEORGE W BUSH, THE MONSTER TRUCK, DESTROYS ANY CAR THAT GETS IN ITS WAY. TICKETS ON SALE NOW NOW NOWWWWWWWWW!!!!! ONLY AT THE GEORGE W BUSH ARENA!!! - colinnwn, on 07/08/2009, -1/+6Because SMU quit taking care of them after they bought units for their overprivileged irresponsible students to destroy in the name of "student housing." Before that time they were well maintained condos mostly for empty nest older people.
- roccanet, on 07/08/2009, -0/+5i was under the impression that dubyah was illiterate - amiright?????
- brianhatch, on 07/08/2009, -2/+7This library will make a splendid example of Bush's legacy!
- blackbeltin, on 07/08/2009, -15/+19Ridiculous story. I don't even get why he gets his own library.
- 2facedtruth, on 07/08/2009, -1/+5Bush leads a legacy like no other, 9/11 happens on his watch, The economy fails while he golfed and milked his little dog.......water boarding, 2 wars....list goes on so ripping off some dud's to get land for his library aint that big of a deal!!!
- colinnwn, on 07/08/2009, -0/+4In 1999 they weren't run down, and 100k probably was FMV. By the time it had stretched into 2005, FMV was probably over 200k for the land alone, even as SMU did everything in their power to turn the condos into an urban ghetto, and intimidate the older non-savvy residents out.
I also don't think someone's home was holding hostage any of SMU's plans. More like SMU made some shady real estate maneuvers to make the fruition of their pet project cheaper. - ohplease, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3Sideshow, you'd be surprised how many people get buried on obviously sarcastic comments.
- Megadeth222, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3THANK YOU.
/Thread - Megadeth222, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3Jealous much?
- robbh66, on 07/08/2009, -1/+4You do realize that the only real difference between a condo and an apartment is that one is owned, the other rented?
- itomato, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3I'm sure that someone would gladly give up their mansion in the name of GWB.
Tax write-off for $14.2M? AND I get my name on a plaque in front of the Lib'ary? Sign me up!
Besides, it's not that dense. They could build it across Mockingbird, in that old 7-11. - AWBoy666, on 07/08/2009, -2/+5Much respect for your comment......very well articulated.
- Megadeth222, on 07/08/2009, -1/+4You couldn't "handle the politics" of the school so you left? Good excuse, but I'm willing to bet its because you were failing that you left.
- IceUck, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3It doesn't matter *how* the Bush Library gets built; only *that* it gets built. The ends justify the means. I think SMU was trying to pay tribute to Bush and his administration with this...
- Megadeth222, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3SMU is not religiously affiliated. It was funded by the Methodist church in like 1911 or something, so i guess they named the school after the church. but SMU is not a religious school! I go there and I'm an atheist and so are most of my friends there.
