- jpsoraire, on 05/04/2009, -29/+215What kind of hypocritical religious bullsh!t is this! Are you kidding me? This is not only legally against the law in this country, but also just immoral and systematically wrong to have our soldiers do this. "Giving gifts" is just their way to try to circumvent the law. Nope, sorry not this time. If this was carried out I hope everyone responsible for encouraging and promoting this act is found accountable for their wrong doings
- amprather, on 05/04/2009, -12/+191How will this NOT backfire and just prove the Taliban's point that this is a War on Islam. This will result in more people being killed on both sides.
- ThatsNotPudding, on 05/04/2009, -25/+197This is why I despise all organized religions - constantly recruiting.
- BorsKaegel, on 05/04/2009, -16/+109Hunt people for Jebus!
- x88justy, on 05/04/2009, -13/+105Strange. Jesus was not a warrior.
- MrColdheart, on 05/04/2009, -13/+79How is justifying the Taliban's propaganda making us safer?
You'd be hard pressed to find something more scarier than finding out the Pentagon has objectives that are outside the law.
That's like finding out your local police are sponsoring the local bordello or sell drugs on the side. - inactive, on 05/04/2009, -8/+70"we hunt people for Jesus that's our busniess" - WTF !!!
- ChristmasPoo, on 05/04/2009, -5/+67Isn't the penalty for converting from Islam to another religion death?
- woodsjransom, on 05/04/2009, -11/+53I want to know which Church did this. I want a name.
- asgardshill, on 05/05/2009, -5/+45Jesus, protect us from Your followers.
- redwire, on 05/05/2009, -6/+43Thankfully the military is less forgiving of this sort of ***** then the article would lead you to believe and he wasn't able to circumvent the law.
None of the bibles were distributed and he was warned that if he tried it would be a violation of general order 1 and he would be court martialed. - AgeofMastery, on 05/04/2009, -11/+42Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do.....
- Frankyfan3, on 05/04/2009, -4/+34Your local police don't do that?
- PBRbeer, on 05/05/2009, -4/+33This is wrong on so many levels it's disgusting.
First off, not just these war torn areas, but places all over the globe are riddled with disease, famine, and violence, and the most important thing these people can do with their time and money is send over their religious documents in the hopes of converting people and gaining more followers....
Secondly think about how much damage this does, to the worthless effort of fighting over there in the first place, when Al-Jazeera broadcasts a story about our troops giving out christian texts to Muslims. It becomes interpreted by viewers as the U.S. waging a Holy War to gain christian followers.
When a closed mind has become manipulated by something as powerful as the wrath of god, you actually believe you are doing good when you are doing harm. This stunt will cause even more hatred of the 'Infidels' by the Muslim population. How would you feel if a Muslim army was marching through the streets of suburban America handing out the Koran on one corner while they blow up the mini-mart on another, I'd don't think words could describe the outrage any of us would feel if it were our city, it would drive any population resistance and insurgency. While these Islamic Extremists may have an incredibly barbaric and twisted society, where women are treated as property and beaten, children forced into labor etc. they actually believe how they live is the right way to live, they wouldn't do it if they thought otherwise. When you are dealing with customs and laws that have dominated the area for centuries those beliefs are so instilled in the population, at a grass roots level, that you will only be able to change them with Leadership by Example, not by force. - sanman, on 05/05/2009, -4/+32I wonder if the Taliban have similar conversations?
"You know suicide is against Islam, right?"
"Yes, but it's okay if you're giving it to them as a gift"
"YEEHAAWW!" - karimthedream, on 05/05/2009, -6/+29That's why religious organizations always accuse groups that they dislike, like homosexuals or atheists, of active recruitment. They're goal is to convert as many as possible so that must be everyone else's.
- david286, on 05/05/2009, -4/+26UPDATE:...the Pashtun and Dari Bibles were confiscated so that they could not be distributed to the population...Luckily the Military stepped in to stop this.
- Lefts, on 05/05/2009, -9/+31That's right. There's also a similar passage in the old testament, I believe.
Only extreme fundamentalists take those passages to heart though. - Frankyfan3, on 05/04/2009, -3/+25http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3mDLsyn6ns
- beatpre, on 05/05/2009, -2/+24Yeah, it was actually VERY anti-climactic. It was actually a very interesting article and then it was just.........'oh, and he was stopped by DoD and the Bibles were confiscated.'
The sad part is, because of one church, a few military clergy and some followers, the military whole is now facing yet another set-back in the region. - MorganMghee, on 05/04/2009, -6/+27"It is against military rules to proselytize"
Proselytism is the practice of attempting to convert people to another opinion and, particularly, another religion. The word proselytism is derived ultimately from the Greek language prefix 'πρός' (towards) and the verb 'έρχομαι' (I come). ...http://www.google.com/url?sa=X&start=0&oi= ... - Khast, on 05/05/2009, -8/+27Stupid Christians, go there and "hunt" them yourselves. But if you go, you aren't there as ambassadors of the US, you are there for proliferating your religion, you are there as ambassadors of Jesus...no one else. (Oh, and if you are sentenced to death, that was the "will of the lord".)
- Terasiel, on 05/05/2009, -0/+18Wonderful. Someone bitching because "the Left" is infringing upon a soldier's right, as a government employee, to spread a religion in lands that are afraid that we will persecute them for their current religion in the first place.
- mikeopubco, on 05/05/2009, -6/+24Yeah, a lot worse than gang rape, mass murder and child abduction. Good grief, get some perspective.
- hawkspur, on 05/05/2009, -5/+23The Crusades, version 4.0?
- MrColdheart, on 05/04/2009, -9/+26I don't know if the Evangelical church has a hierarchical structure or not.
(the time it takes to wiki something)
The Evangelical Church in North America (ECNA) was officially formed in June 4, 1968 and by 2000, the Church had 12,475 members in 133 local churches, located in 21 states, and they are an off shoot of the Methodist Church.
Wow just think how much power they accumulated in just under a decade, and all they had to do was lobby Bush and infiltrate our government. (I think I recall the Church of Scientology had the same plan as well). - woahwoahwoah, on 05/05/2009, -1/+18Way to miss the point entirely, Lone. No offense, but your occupation as a soldier doesn't make this more acceptable, nor does it add credibility to your flawed argument. Want to read your Bible? Wonderful. However, these soldiers are in clear violation of the rules, and this video reveals that they have religious intent. They said they want to hunt others for Jesus. Does that sound like mere "gift giving" to you? I don't care if one book means something to you; it's against the rules.
I see that they don't teach soldiers about critical thinking. - EverTheCynic, on 05/05/2009, -1/+18What the hell is an atheist symbol and why the hell does atheism need a symbol? Is there a symbol for not believing in Santa Claus or the tooth fairy? That's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard.
- zuiquan, on 05/05/2009, -5/+21Hey. Dumbass. Do you not understand the "no proselytizing rules" in the military and why we have them? Wow the right really are ***** stupid... Typical.
- woahwoahwoah, on 05/05/2009, -3/+19Of course I'm open to new ideas. However, this is not about religious tolerance. It's about the methods these soldiers are using and the fact that they are displaying conduct unfit for a soldier. They know that this is against the rules, which is why they're calling it "gift giving" instead. Keep your generalizations to yourself, sir.
- 8FoldPath, on 05/05/2009, -0/+161) Out of context. Your quote was a prophesy from Jesus that his word would divide families between believers and non-believers.
2) It doesn't suggest Jesus was a warrior or even violent. - TsuruchiBrian, on 05/05/2009, -6/+21Why do I get the feeling that if we manage to actually convert some of these Muslim extremists to Christianity, they are going to start crashing planes into buildings to kill people that are working on the Sabbath?
- sanman, on 05/05/2009, -3/+18Churches can't influence the govt while retaining tax-exempt status
If they want to renounce tax-exempt status, then yes, they can openly act to influence the govt, like any other lobby
But you can't be tax-exempt and a lobby at the same time
Whatever happened to "render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and unto God what is God's"? - cambob76, on 05/05/2009, -1/+16"not only legally against the law" lol
- Mnementh2230, on 05/05/2009, -7/+21Dugg for truth - damn it, this has GOT to be the most idiotic thing I've read in months. Some retard and his religion can't leave well enough alone and, due to his inability to THINK, gives the ENTIRE US MILLITARY a black eye and a setback in the "hearts and minds" effort. What a douchebag.
Why does this ***** surprise me? Every time organized religion hits a new low for me, and I think they can't possibly get any more stupid, they go and prove me wrong! - beatpre, on 05/05/2009, -2/+16Already has, Al Jezeera and HuffPost have both run it on front page. Get the Pan-Arab world up in arms, and get, well, at least everyone here up in arms.
Backfire...check. - Lefts, on 05/05/2009, -2/+15What?
- somnambulator, on 05/05/2009, -2/+15He's obviously happy with quantity over quality.
- theNazz, on 05/05/2009, -5/+17Since the White House is in business to sell weapons and security, I guess it pays to go around the world pissing in hornets nests to stir up business...
- SwordOfShannara, on 05/05/2009, -5/+17This is a great website that is dedicated to fixing this problem: http://www.militaryreligiousfreedom.org
- Lefts, on 05/05/2009, -1/+13Oh god, keep them away from Leviticus. Please tell me you did not translate Leviticus.
- cambob76, on 05/05/2009, -2/+14This is exactly why the missionaries were forced to leave Marklar.
- 8FoldPath, on 05/05/2009, -2/+14In certain fundamentalist regions, the Quran has been twisted to make conversion illegal, but there are several examples to the contrary in the text itself.
1) 'If it had been the will of your Lord that all the people of the world should be believers, all the people of the earth would have believed! Would you then compel mankind against their will to believe?' (10:99)
2) '(O Prophet) proclaim: 'This is the Truth from your Lord. Now let him who will, believe in it, and him who will, deny it.'' (18:29)
3) 'If they turn away from thee (O Muhammad) they should know that We have not sent you to be their keeper. Your only duty is to convey My message.' (42:48)
4) 'Let there be no compulsion in religion.' (2:256)
Religious decisions should be matters of personal choice, not a cause for state intervention. Faith imposed by force is not true belief, but coercion. Islam has no need to compel belief in its divine truth. As the Quran states: 'Truth stands out clear from error. Therefore, whoever rejects evil and believes in God has grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold that never breaks.' (2:256) - lemur, on 05/05/2009, -8/+20I'm a Muslim, and I say go ahead convert them all to Christianity... that way the world can continue to watch Afghans murder each other and commit all manners of barbarity henceforth in the name of Christianity rather than Islam. Frankly, I'm tired of explaining my religious ideals of love and peace whilst Afghanis are busy running amok in the background, and I figure the Christians should be the selfless martyrs and take one for the team on this one. Who's up for it?
- karimthedream, on 05/05/2009, -5/+16Jebus hungry!
- mauigreen, on 05/05/2009, -6/+17quit trying to force your religion on other people you ***** jesus jumpers. all religous zealots are bad, i don't care what god you pray to. do what ever you want and leave the rest of the world alone
- Gguillorn, on 05/05/2009, -2/+13Comments that ask to be buried are really pathetic.
- bradleyland, on 05/05/2009, -3/+14Just what the middle east needs: more religion.
- albie, on 05/05/2009, -1/+11Actually, while it's true that Judaism typically does not actively "recruit" -- in the sense that you won't have Jews going door to door telling non-Jews they need to convert to be "saved" -- it *does* allow for conversion.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conversion_to_Judaism - jeremymccurdy, on 05/05/2009, -0/+10See, those quotes are reasonable, basically saying "We'll tell you what we believe, but if you don't want to follow us, that's fine, it's your choice."
If all religions preached ethics like that, there wouldn't be a need for the pure hatred of religion that's grown out many atheists, people could accept differences instead of bickering over petty details. -
