- militant, on 10/10/2007, -50/+204we're not just the internet. and we trounced the media's claims of 1-2% in polling. so much room to grow. i wish we'd done better, of course, but i am entirely satisfied with feeding big 9% spoonfuls of crow to all the naysayers. not to mention the machine irregularities, which i will not make accusations about, but i do feel some concern.
- MarkCentury, on 10/10/2007, -46/+183The myth that Ron Paul support is marginal and confined to the Internet has been SHATTERED!!!
Ron Paul after only one week and minimal spending in Iowa placed 5th.
Ron Paul is ranked 6th nationwide and moving up according to the National Journal:
http://nationaljournal.com/campaigns/
PEOPLE DONATE, DO MEET-UPS, LETS MAKE THIS HAPPEN!!!!! - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -28/+163Wait and see what Paul does in NH.
I bet it will be a lot better. - mournsanity, on 10/10/2007, -31/+140From 2% to 9% is amazing!
- jron, on 10/10/2007, -13/+101Considering Ron wants to gut farm subsidies, 9.1% is pretty damn huge in the corn field called Iowa.
- tntgs, on 10/10/2007, -11/+8314,000 Iowan votes among a crowd of 40,000 republicans. But I estimate that the Ron Paul crowd outnumbered the Romney/Brownback cheerleader squad by a factor of four. This is just my personal observation as I attended the Straw Poll. But I am surprised that people would drive several hundred miles to come to an event that is clearly over-hyped. It shows how passionate and committed they are to supporting the one candidate who was the outspoken critic of the Iraq war from the start.
For the record, I am an Iowa voter residing in Ames and attending Iowa State University. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -22/+89I can't stand ABC's *****:
"Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, made his appeal to end the United States' involvement in Iraq to a sea of supporters who have been some of the most vocal and energized of the day. Paul challenged his supporters to show that his campaign is more than just online support and urged them to convert that support into actual votes. Rep. Paul's fifth-place showing demonstrated his supporters were unable to meet that challenge." - Deliman, on 10/10/2007, -23/+89Great job and kudos to all those volunteers in iowa!
- omgitsfletch, on 10/10/2007, -13/+75Great results considering the 4 above RP spent so much time and money in Iowa. He's staying steady, and headed to libertarian NH. GO RP!
- p0tent1al, on 10/10/2007, -20/+75This is from a Ron Paul forum:
I am celebrating, in my heart and head.
I worked my ass off so much in Ames today, with only 3 hours of sleep, i'm posting this, and going straight to bed.
5th ain't bad when you consider, Ron Paul JUST opened up his campaign headquarters in Iowa, 3 days ago, he only has THREE staffers for the WHOLE DAMN STATE, didn't start airing adds till about 5 days till the poll, and spent way less money than anyone else!
If he was like mitt romney, the mormon, and bused in 1,000's with a paid vote, he would have got 1st, no doubt in my mind!
I couldn't believe the amount of paid voters Mitt Romney had going there, one bus would unload 50 people, 30 seconds later another 50, that went on, i'm not kidding you, for about 5 hours!!
Paid for their hotel, a meal, t shirts, their voting ticket, and who knows what else.
I think it was George washinton that said there is no lower form of politics then paying people to vote for you, and believe me, he was right!!!!
They walked off the bus LEAD by Romney staffers, hold a sign that said "FOLLOW ME"
LIKE SHEEP TO THE SLAUGHTER!!!
IT MADE MY STOMACH TURN!!
I'll upload the video i have very soon!
RON PAUL 4 President 2008!! - gotamd, on 10/10/2007, -7/+50It's sad that a person like Ron Paul is having such a problem with Republicans. Whatever happened to being the party of small government and economic and personal freedom?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -19/+57Not that is a poll that can't be blamed on the spam bots!!!!
- tomcat4u, on 10/10/2007, -8/+45Iowa picks straws. New Hampshire picks presidents.
- Spentlife, on 10/10/2007, -20/+53Ron Paul is coming out of nowhere... and with 1 week he got over 9%... gg
- crxvfr, on 10/10/2007, -22/+55I think the comments here by Ron Paul fans are right on. The fact is that there is 9.1% in (ames) Iowa. WAY better than what the gallop poll or any republican sponsored polls indicate. Where does the error lie????? 9%, we'll take it! Go Ron! ..and keep it up Ron Paul Army, ..(the host at the straw poll was rude to Ron Paul. the MSM will NEVER be nice (-> http://www.ronpaulwnc.com/content/view/25/40/ ) to Ron Paul.
- Bigboomer223, on 10/10/2007, -28/+59SHows how wrong the media was 10% is huge!
- vuke69, on 10/10/2007, -5/+35Mitt Romney bought 10,000 tickets and got 4,516 votes.
Ron Paul bought 500 tickets and got 1305 votes.
Feel free to draw your own conclusions from those numbers. - dagnome1984, on 10/10/2007, -9/+39More like a landslide. There are many media programs up there that have Ron Paul supporters. The Free State Project is starting to take root in New Hampshire. I highly doubt that the other candidates will be able to compete with it.
- samadam, on 10/10/2007, -7/+36Are you kidding? A libertarian in the self proclaimed "freedom state"? I predict he does very well there!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -14/+42Check the history of this poll. Only once did the winner of the Ames Straw Poll win the presidency. One time Pat Robertson won. This poll means nothing.
Go Ron. - mighty_mouth, on 10/10/2007, -1/+29One of the 18 voting machines failed so they had to do a handcount of all votes entered at that machine. Fortunately, every candidate was allowed to have a poll watcher so I doubt any funny business occurred.
- stevencon, on 10/10/2007, -36/+62Paul needed a 2nd or 3rd place showing. 5th is terrible for him.
this is a straw poll of activists. paul will do worse in a real election. - andrewmi, on 10/10/2007, -44/+70I actually attended the straw poll and voted for Paul (why not?), though am by no means an avid supporter. However, the avid supporters he did have in attendance were rather unhappy and bitter afterwards. I think the hopes were for a higher and stronger finish, but Paul's weakness is that he just does not appeal to Joe and Phyllis Republican. Remember, he loses a HUGE amount of support for his opposition to the war - in fact, he didn't even directly state his desire to withdraw troops in his straw poll presentation speech - only hinted at it in a roundabout fashion, which I thought was a lame cop-out (though I can't blame him; he would have been booed loudly). Anyway, I think the fact that he had to tone down his statements and not fully illustrate his platforms to win a crowd of "average" voters speaks loudly.
You guys need to realize: he's not going to win the nomination. I'm sorry, it's the truth. So silly statements like "If Romney and the rest didn't buy their votes, Ron Paul would've won!" are unnecessary and delusional. Keep fighting; I respect your passion. But please get a grip. - LeeJunFan, on 10/10/2007, -13/+38Dugg down for being lame enough to support Bush, I checked your diggs.
- RobynG7, on 10/10/2007, -8/+32I dugg you down for being a rebel without a cause.
- mmortal03, on 10/10/2007, -9/+33On Fox News, at the following link, they have mentioned the top of the results and the bottom results, and conveniently left out the middle (Ron Paul), along with a bunch of other rationalizing about how Mitt Romney "easily" won, instead of just straight reporting the results: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,293003,00.html
- ganjadude4391, on 10/10/2007, -3/+26And when he doesnt drop out you stop with the negitive Paul comments
- BrandonMills, on 10/10/2007, -7/+29We're sorry, but your party has been taken over by the Neocons.
- RogueIlluminati, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23New Hampshire is also home to the "Free State" movement, whose ideals fall right in line with Dr. Paul.
- KJSatz, on 10/10/2007, -10/+31Rudy didn't even GO to this thing, guys...him OR McCain.
- LuciusBrutus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23Awesome!
Kind of scary that in a poll that small they would have a failure with one of their machines. - thecoolestguy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+23RP was polling at 0% in Iowa because Iowa is a pro-war state and gets huge federal farm subsidies. In comparison, he gets 2-3% in nationwide polls. The RP campaign only setup its campaign headquarters in Iowa 3 days ago, while the other candidates set theirs up a month ago. That he got 9% of the straw poll in Iowa is phenomenal.
- futureteg, on 10/10/2007, -15/+34yes and those guys spent all of their money and time in Iowa. We've only been there 1 week. And have barely spent any money there. 5th place is great considering the situation
- instruisto, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21To my fellow RP supporters: We have to get off the keyboard and out into the "real" world. I'm using this for motivation to make the next meetup and put out more signs and flyers. 5th place is nothing to brag about, even if it is better than the polling numbers.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -15/+34While I did not expect him to reach 9% (kudos there) I think all these "Wow paul did great" comments are a little overzealous. If Giuliani + McCain had participated, Paul would be in 7th place. And the fact that he was beaten by Huckabee and Brownback does not bode well for him, as those are candidates that wouldn't stand a chance in the general election.
- AnarkeIncarnate, on 10/10/2007, -9/+27The straw poll in Iowa is rigged from the start. The hopefuls buy the $35 tickets and hand them out to supporters. Romney is spending his money to get his plastic face on camera. Ron Paul spent far less bringing people in for free. He still had an outstanding showing. He beat Rudy 9-11.
- obliviousfool, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19Live free or die!
- gulmargha, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19apparently the people of iowa really really hate mecca and medina.
- dweeb79, on 10/10/2007, -6/+24We will give it time and see who the front runners are, then from there we will choose between the Turd Sandwich and/or the Giant douche.
- stevencon, on 10/10/2007, -3/+21the biggest winner in the whole event would be huckabee.
- mmortal03, on 10/10/2007, -3/+21Neither did Fred Thompson, and he STILL beat both McCain and Giuliani.
- DustinR, on 10/10/2007, -5/+22***** Ghouliani
- kufu91, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19war and fear
- Firehed, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18Well, you've gotta admit that if anyone has a team of willing and dedicated tech-savvy fans, it's Paul.
- wtbuser, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16And do you know that voting for the "Net Neutrality" bill that in fact you are validating congress' authority over the internet? Once a power of authority grants itself power to enforce its will (of neutrality) upon the internet it becomes a slippery slope of government control and regulation.
- airwalkery2k, on 10/10/2007, -8/+23Actually, we can all easily conclude this is merely the work of a couple of dedicated hackers. They must have hacked into the voters of Iowa. The media even told me he won't win and that Ron Paul is part of a conspiracy. Those evil Ron Paul hackers will stop at nothing, will they?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -15/+30Thanks to everyone in Iowa who worked on this campaign.
- rhabd0mancer, on 10/10/2007, -19/+33Ron Paul got pwned by Tom Tancredo.
How embarrassing! - BrandonMills, on 10/10/2007, -43/+57Way to spin this story. Rudy isn't even in the straw poll, and he got 5th out of a bunch of nobodies.
4th place: Tom Tancredo (1,961 votes, 13.7%)
3rd place: Sam Brownback (2,192 votes, 15.3%)
2nd place: Mike Huckabee (2,587 votes, 18.1%)
and Ron Paul ranked behind them. Now, I don't think the straw polls really mean anything except who is forced to drop from the race, and I dislike all Republican candidates, but I don't like spin, either. I guess these results mean that the other candidates ahead of Ron Paul, Romney aside, have their own 'revolution' coming.
So where is the Digg story about the Mike Huckabee 2nd or Sam Brownback or Tom Tencredo ranking? Yeah, not so much, but to spin it in the name of Ron Paul, that's what makes Libertarians happy. -
