- CopsSayLegalize, on 07/02/2009, -5/+76With so many great steps happening like this all around the country, change will soon start to trickle up to Congress and the White House, but not unless we take action: http://www.EndDrugProhibition.com
- Coinspinner, on 07/02/2009, -3/+54I can barely keep up with all the recent events. Don't let up, folks.
On the contrary, now is the time to really put ourselves into the Reform Movement. - gantz9x, on 07/02/2009, -7/+42lol @ "SIN tax". I don't see a correlation to sinning and marijuana. These people have watched too much reefer madness propaganda.
- leetleo, on 07/02/2009, -4/+33This study can only produce positive results. The marijuana market is going to exist either way, the only question here is whether or not the money is going to go to local businesses and government or local (potentially violent) drug dealers and cartels abroad. This is all without even considering the fiscal benefits of removing non violent drug offenders from the prison system. It's really a no brainer, but it'll be good to have it on paper.
- buu2, on 07/02/2009, -3/+29slowly but surely, the wrongs of our grandparents generation will be righted
- seancanterbury, on 07/02/2009, -2/+26Pack your bags. Time to go to RI
- xexx, on 07/03/2009, -2/+22I don't smoke anything, I've probably had less than 50 alcoholic drinks in 5 years, and I personally think smoking marijuana is stupid and wouldn't do it myself, but I also think it being illegal is even more ***** stupid and I'm damn tired of my tax dollars being wasted trying to enforce the unenforceable, it's about time this ***** isn't illegal anymore.
- TrevorPace, on 07/02/2009, -0/+17How many people buy alcohol from the underground now adays?
- Gndoab, on 07/02/2009, -0/+17why would people pay extra tax on liquor at stores when they can just go to the underground liquor market and get it tax free?
- aufte, on 07/02/2009, -4/+19Well, *****, I'm a sinner.
- matthekc, on 07/02/2009, -3/+17The street price is inflated because it is illegal... The difference in price would probably be negligible and at least with the legal ***** you would know it hasn't been dipped in embalming fluid.
On a personal note I haven't smoked in years it impedes my life progress, but if a grown adult wants to smoke responsibly I support that choice. - TheEggAndI, on 07/02/2009, -4/+16save your money, R.I., ive conducted my own study
conclusion: its awesome, immediate legalization is advised.
you're welcome - milkmage, on 07/03/2009, -1/+13thirty five bucks an ounce seems pretty cheap considering the street value.
lets see.. I smoke about an oz a month.. @ $35 an oz.. that's.. holy *****.
$420/ a year in taxes.
is this a joke? - the8thbit, on 07/03/2009, -0/+12A sin tax is a convenience and guaranteed quality tax, as pointed out by the two above me.
- DarkCloud515, on 07/02/2009, -1/+13If they need to put a "Sin Tax" on it so we can see marijuana stores how we see liquor stores, I'm all for it.
- nepidae, on 07/02/2009, -2/+13see portugal
- INDOAZZ, on 07/02/2009, -2/+12About TIME!... LEGALIZE it so the economy can get a jump start back on its feet...Cali should be first since We are about to go under... $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
- y2ktibltd, on 07/02/2009, -0/+10A sin tax of $35/ounce does not correlate to a total price of $35/ounce. Much in the same way gasoline being taxed at $0.35 / Gallon does not equal you filling up your vehicle for four bucks.
- SamuraiGhost, on 07/02/2009, -0/+9I don't either. They made a syntax error.
- malex, on 07/03/2009, -1/+8It's just an expression. Settle down, Francis.
- deltron0, on 07/02/2009, -1/+8When used responsibly I don't see how vaporizing/smoking marijuana is any different than drinking a few beers. I'm sure either substance can impede ones life progress.
- dafragsta, on 07/03/2009, -1/+8$35 on what is a black market product of ~$400, of a certain grade of course, is a good deal. Yes I'm aware that $35 will double the cost of another certain grade of product, but if it's a buyer's market and that $400 product becomes $50 because of a drastically reduced cost and risk factor, you're still making out like a bandit by saving $315. Something tells me that on the east coast, the savings would actually be much greater.
- RolyatLeahcim, on 07/03/2009, -1/+8All your base are belong to Monsanto.
- matthekc, on 07/02/2009, -1/+8Yes MY life progress that being said I have meet a few people a very few people where it actually improved their mental condition.
- Unreal030, on 07/03/2009, -1/+7"it impedes my life progress"
your doing it wrong. - FrozenPie, on 07/02/2009, -2/+8http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=p ...
Portugal's results - zioxide, on 07/03/2009, -0/+6$35 is cheap.. wasn't the tax in that proposed bill in cali $150/oz?
- Frankyfan3, on 07/02/2009, -2/+8Good news, kids...
Nixon is dead this time! - energyx, on 07/02/2009, -0/+6anything that feels good is a sin
- TheEggAndI, on 07/03/2009, -0/+5you're right, it wont eradicate the underground market, but thats not to say it wouldnt put a serious dent in it.
you ask why should you pay more for legal weed when you can get it cheaper off the street. i'd happily pay for legal weed if it meant that it would be regulated in the same way as alcohol and ciggs, so that what i was getting was just weed and not laced (not that thats ever happened to me), so that i knew i wasnt getting beat on the amount i was buying. if you buy an 8th in a store, you know its an 8th. i usually cant weigh out a bag right then and there when im making a buy so i never know if im getting ***** over or not til after i get home. and not having to worry about getting arrested or going to jail would be a huge motivator for me too. maybe this is just an issue in my area, but weed can be hard to find every so often. a couple times a year, it seems no one can get anything. legalizing weed could ensure a steady flow from the farms to the shelves. - Bloodwine, on 07/03/2009, -1/+6"sin tax" is just the name given to such taxes that already exist on tobacco and alcohol. Don't get too bent out of shape over it.
Obama also wants a "sin tax" put on sugary drinks, including sodas. I doubt anybody really thinks they are sinful, but in the face of a lack of a better collective term for such taxes, they will continue to be called sin taxes. - charlie6969, on 07/03/2009, -0/+5Nope.
Who says smoking marijuana is a sin and who is the Government to tax me for a SIN?
Otherwise, legalizing it with moderate taxes would make far more sense and far more money, in the long run.
Politicians need to quit thinking they are Ministers.
Leap and NORML are great places to learn new things.
Just sayin - Gndoab, on 07/03/2009, -0/+5brewing beer costs next to nothing. it's like a one time 200 dollar thing for the investments needed in equipment, and thats it. the rest is just hops (inexpensive), yeast (inexpensive), barley (inexpensive), and time (expensive).
A buddy of mine brews his own beer. it's generally much better than the stuff people can buy at stores (microbrews excluded) - inactive, on 07/03/2009, -0/+5*applauds*
- dafragsta, on 07/03/2009, -1/+6It's called a word problem. $400 (old cost) - ($50 (new cost) + $35 (tax)) = $315 in savings.
I don't know that the new cost of high grade stuff would be if it were legal, but it damn sure wouldn't be $400. At any rate, $400 - 35 is $365, not $315. - Gndoab, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4huh?
- LordSkywalker, on 07/02/2009, -3/+7Visit CannabisTaxAct.org and Yes390.org
Once the first state does it, and proves it can be successful, it'll spread to other states. - davewelsh79, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4I accidentally the reply button too.
- Yage2006, on 07/03/2009, -0/+4Well it's a step in the right direction but its still illegal to sell.
It should be regulated like alcohol. Billions would go to the state instead of gangs. - Nzx0824, on 07/03/2009, -0/+4Yea lol. They can even post on craigslist and you can meet them indoors and it's legal.
- overtoke, on 07/03/2009, -0/+4what should the SIN tax for being a representative of this country be
- tunafizzle, on 07/03/2009, -0/+4Well this story isn't about harmful drugs like heroin or ecstasy, it seems you misread the story and mixed up marijuana with something else. Thanks for spamming the link and sharing your deep insight.
As a side note to be an *****, you did open your statement by declaring your ignorance on the subject from the lack of personal experience with medicine.
This is like saying "I have no experience nor can i demonstrate knowledge on the subject, but here is my valid idea on the subject"
If anyone else here lives in Pennsylvania, don't forget to write your state legislator and tell them you want them to support HB 1393! - bigplrbear, on 07/03/2009, -1/+5***** Nixon
***** the war on drugs
The drug problem should be dealt with as a health problem, not a criminal one - wrathbone, on 07/03/2009, -0/+4The barrier for entry into growing good weed isn't any lower than brewing good beer, I'd say. You can't just stick a seed in the ground and grow chronic.
- LordSkywalker, on 07/02/2009, -2/+6OCTA2010.org
Fund state programs, not the black market. Control cannabis and support industrial hemp! - LadyZoots, on 07/03/2009, -1/+5I'd have to say that marijuana isn't any different then having a glass of wine. People have such a negative view of it because it has been illegal for so long.I wouldn't say you are boring, but you do sound stressed. A little pot might calm you down. They wouldn't give it to patience in the hospital if it were that dangerous. Most prescription drugs have more adverse reactions and no one have ever died from marijuana. Just remember the facts when you begin to judge others!
- pyrite013, on 07/03/2009, -0/+4I've never been a religious person in my life. I just want to say that harmful religions should not be allowed even if there is public demand or support for it. Of course, I consider all religion harmful.
- Garofoli, on 07/03/2009, -0/+4...of schwag.
- charlie6969, on 07/03/2009, -0/+4Legalize then tax the ***** out of it?
Way to get people to grow their own marijuana, RI.
But, gotta give you kudos for even having the balls to study this idea.
It's a start.
Good for you! - fant0m, on 07/02/2009, -3/+6I'm going to go "sin" right now.
