- inactive, on 03/28/2008, -27/+175Right on. The media's tendency to paraphrase and do the work of analyzing for people has a lot of people simply reading a headline or listening to a 10 second clip and believing it. People need to learn how to listen again.
- AtHomeBoy2000, on 03/28/2008, -19/+139Good for him. And this was from BEFORE the videos hit MSM. So, this cant be some post fallout coverup.
- swrostmore, on 03/28/2008, -16/+70Its a popular meme that Wright is a "racist" and that Obama attended a "racist church." I'm curious, after thousands of hours of sermons have been gone over with a fine-tooth comb, can anyone point to a single quote from Wright that expresses "racist" or black supremicist ideas?
Its a fact that the guy has said stupid things (that the CIA introduced AIDS to Africa, for example). Its a fact that he's said controversial things that are arguable (God damn America for treating its citizens as less than human, inre: disproportionate sentencing, etc). And its a fact that he's made true statements that are controversial when a black man says them, but factually true when a white man says them (9/11 was "America's chickens coming home to roost" - US Ambassador Ed Peck). But where are the quotes that supposedly make him a "racist?" If they exist, surely the muckrakers would have found them by now. - cyclades, on 03/28/2008, -19/+72Great letter. The NYT has been a joke for a long time now.
- Blowupologist, on 03/28/2008, -4/+39NYT leans towards whatever direction gets them the most papers sold.
- nordstorm, on 03/28/2008, -15/+44I bet this gets little to no media attention at all. After all, they(MSM) don't like to critique themselves too often!
- BryanG412, on 03/28/2008, -6/+34Also, some of Wright's comments were not that crazy...Remember the Tuskegee experiment in which blacks were given Syphilis and offered "false treament". The purpose was to see how Syphiliis untreated would behave...Here is the link:

So considering this, what Wright said is really not that far fetched. - wyzeguy27, on 03/28/2008, -19/+41This needs to hit the front page. In the past 6 months I've become almost disgusted with the NYT's coverage of the electoral campaigns, specifically their unabashed, childlike bias toward clinton. It's one thing to publicly endorse a candidate, but as one of the nation's largest newspapers (in readership numbers, anyway), you should still be driven to provide the most comprehensive news coverage possible. The NYT is sinking into tabloid journalism with this election nonsense. It's too bad, too, because they have some great writers.
- hpsharding, on 03/28/2008, -10/+30As a religious man himself, it's no surprise, nor it is an issue, that he sees religion as an essential part of someones identity and I would imagine the references to Kantor's faith are merely his attempt to connect with her on a natural, human level. It's clearly evident based upon the disparity between the NYT story and Wright's own recollection of their meeting, that his complaints are legitimate, so to attribute a discriminatory motive to them is bizarre. He has every right, perhaps even the duty, to embrace someone as a a fellow human being at the same time as he takes them to task for any perceived wrongdoings.
If you see Wright's words as a reason to make wild, unfounded accusations of anti-semitism, then you're the one who's making an issue of Kantor's faith. - evil-doer, on 03/28/2008, -3/+23as someone that lives outside of the united states i can tell you that virtually all of your media is right wing. people seem to take that spectrum of far right to neutral and just assume the median of that is center and to the left of that median is "left wing". but in the bigger picture, its not.
- obamacan, on 03/28/2008, -10/+29It needs to be sent to Keith Olbermann, the only one with cajones to actually buck the tide.
- JStraum, on 03/28/2008, -4/+21Islamaphobe/anti-semite - what's the diff? You do know his first name is actually Barack, right?
You redneck dumbass mofo... - imikedaman, on 03/28/2008, -4/+21It's nearly impossible for me to stomach reading comments for any political-related story anymore. On the major news sites like MSNBC and CNN, any pro-Obama story is met with hundreds of comments from people swearing that the MSM is biased against Hillary and they secretly have wanted Obama to win the nomination from day one. On any pro-Hillary story, the exact opposite is true - people swear that everyone is against Obama and they're secretly conspiring to get Hillary elected. How can both be true at the same time?
The MSM covered Obama's pastor problem the same way they covered Hillary's sniper blunder, with lots of short clips, newspaper articles, and talking heads discussing the damage and the public perception. And in both cases, people claimed that the other candidate got off too easy and their candidate was criticized too harshly using nefariously-chosen sound bites that were designed to put the other candidate in the White House. - WasabiBomb, on 03/28/2008, -4/+21A man of faith referring to another man's faith isn't anti-anything. It's his job- it's how he sees the rest of the world. I'm an atheist, and even *I* can understand that. In the article, it's clear that he holds Jews in high respect.
- inactive, on 03/28/2008, -5/+21Now? Did you read the Times in 2002 and 2003 when they were spewing the right wing's ***** about WMD?
- inactive, on 03/28/2008, -6/+22There's nothing racist about facts. Wright has been 100% correct in every public appearance I've seen him make. What is the problem?
- obamacan, on 03/28/2008, -8/+23In this situation I think it was more than paraphrase. Like the 30 second sound clip which was actually Reverand Wright quoting Ambassador Peck the previous day on Fox News (oh, just a minor omission), NYT ran a story to sensationalize. Beyond the pale. As Opie said at HuffPo:
" I believe the Reverend Wright is being smeared and I think this letter is substantive evidence. I think Rev. Wright is being given selective attention by the media in order to make a negative frame around Obama and it is the same as Swift-Boating. The very same. That the New York Times is the generator of this effort is appalling. It claims to be "The Newspaper of Record", but that is clearly not. It is failing by its own self-proclaimed standards to be anything other than a fish-wrapper."
What year is this? (Oh, btw, I'm in the demographics for HRC, 55, white, female) - LuCiFer6, on 03/28/2008, -4/+17I'm a 34 year old black man from Baton Rouge about 100 miles from New Orleans and I was angered about how most the "PEOPLE" were treated after Katrina which made me hate our and distrust our Government.
Does that make me a racist?
Does it make me a racist when I get angered on how black men get profiled by the cops in New Jersey?
Though some of things Wright has said were a little crazy but I have to hear say one racist comment about white people or any people for that matter. - McHoffa, on 03/28/2008, -2/+15I am far from black and a registered republican, and I don't think he is racist at all. He may hold a grudge, but I think that happens to anyone that gets hurt by another race. A white guy gets attacked by a black gang, would he be afraid to walk in just that area, or would he be afraid to walk through any crowd of black men? A black guy walks through a group of rednecks and gets attacked, or even just picked on, does he just fear stupid rednecks, or any group of southern white guys? An illegal mexican kills a white woman, does the locals talk trash about this one man or about immigrants in general?
I think it's still normal especially in older generations, to hold a grudge sometimes. It doesn't mean you are racist. I've known some white people that have black friends, but in general still hold a grudge because of things like the NAACP, UNCF, and Jessie Jackson... It's whether you let those thoughts become a dislike for the other race, or work to overcome those grudges that makes you racist or not, in my opinion.
The things I have read from him make sense to me. I don't think he hates America or white people, just as much as I don't believe GW Bush doesn't care about black people. (He doesn't care about all races equally). - lewhich, on 03/28/2008, -8/+21It just seems to me some white men just don't like to be told about the evil deeds that America has committed. My question is to all who call Rev. Wright a racist:
What did Rev. Wright say that is not true?
Before you rush to a conclusion, research stuff like "Jim Crow", "The Tuskegee Experiment", "Slavery": - LuCiFer6, on 03/28/2008, -2/+15You did noticed I said how "PEOPLE" were treated after Katrina right???? Also did I say anything racist? You're the perfect example of how some people jump to conclusions about Rev Wright.
- kingUssop, on 03/28/2008, -4/+17The people criticizing him are incapable of understanding it... don't bother. Every society has its bottom of the intellectual barrel, congratulations far right-wing!
- inajeep, on 03/28/2008, -7/+20NYT is now leaning to the right?
- donniek23, on 03/28/2008, -18/+30Ya it's sad. All the people with made up minds after a 10-second clip(what kind of judgment is that?) have been crying "we want to know why he was there for 20 years", and they will probably never see anything like this or the full sermons that put those clips in proper context. The media is corrupt and criminal in what they have done.
- bmorlok, on 03/28/2008, -3/+15People who make decisions based oin 20 seconds clips are the ones that like to be TOLD what to think because they are too lazy or stupid to make a choice for themselves.
- ShugAvery, on 03/28/2008, -52/+63The medias been working on destroying the Obama campaign for a long time
- inactive, on 03/28/2008, -2/+12FTA, Rev. Wright: "You told me you were doing a "Spiritual Biography" of Senator Barack Obama."
You: "Kantor was writing a NEWS ARTICLE about an important decision in Obama's campaign"
If Kantor was writing about the campaigns decision, why did she lie to Wright? - sindex, on 03/28/2008, -5/+15Aww.. that Freedom of Speech thing really burns you up, doesn't it?
- WasabiBomb, on 03/28/2008, -3/+13Thank you, Treo. It's nice to see someone who realizes that you don't have to demonize a candidate because you disagree with them.
- neodorian, on 03/28/2008, -3/+13Right, "obviously not including caucuses" where Republicans can't vote for Hillary to skew the vote to the weaker candidate...
- LuCiFer6, on 03/28/2008, -2/+11Also AGAIN THIS NOT ABOUT RACE this is how the Government treat it's lower to middle class citizens.
- bmorlok, on 03/28/2008, -5/+14I think what ShempMcGurk meant to say was "I hope reporters can find some evidence that he is anti-semitic so that my racist views can be affirmed"
- brstilson, on 03/28/2008, -1/+10she can't get enough delegates to win.
- inactive, on 03/28/2008, -0/+9I'm not making an assumption. The article only has his side. If Kantor or the Times wants to rebut it, they do have the ability to do so. They can publish their side and if I run across it on Digg I'll comment if I want to.
- inactive, on 03/28/2008, -3/+12Interesting the way you defend Kantor with a list of assumptions while dismissing Wright's story out of hand.
Not surprising, but interesting. - adjustafresh, on 03/28/2008, -2/+11Who else finds it amusing that people on the far left view the NYT as a right-wing propaganda machine, and people on the far right view it as a left-wing propaganda machine. Which one is it, 'cause it can't be both!?
- lhughey, on 03/28/2008, -2/+11You guys kill me! Another case of ignorant fear mongering. 99% of black churches teach their members to value the black family and try to improve their community. Oddly enough, this is causes a lot of fear amongst some people. THis is really puzzling to me. Its always the people that know the least about "black life" that proclaim to be the experts about it.
- wild, on 03/28/2008, -7/+15Is that list of people supposed to be Jewish or something? And you're basing that on their last name? I thought our country was smarter than that these days.
- BryanG412, on 03/28/2008, -0/+8whoops just proved myself wrong, turns out only 3% of the New Jersey white population is being arrested whereas 13% of the New Jersey black population is being arrested...my bad
- adjustafresh, on 03/28/2008, -12/+20Um, yeah... "destroying" the Obama campaign... and by "the medias" to whom are you referring? Do you have any links that you could provide that prove the media bias AGAINST a man who was a state legislator a couple years ago who is now a few months from sitting in the Oval Office?
- br0ck, on 03/28/2008, -2/+9Are you just making stuff up now? Everyone knows that the pastor canceled the speeches as a security precaution.
- smotpoker, on 03/28/2008, -4/+11Maybe you should ask her why he mentions it.
In the letter he states she betrayed his trust etc. Knowing how most religious people think/relate, it isn't unreasonable to assume she might have appealed to his trust through her faith and now he chooses to point out the hypocrisy of her appeal on those grounds - scamper22, on 03/28/2008, -5/+12God bless the NY Times.
God Damn the NY times.
It says so in the bible.
The NY Times' chickens are coming home to roost (and twirl your hands....and wait for applause)
-----
nah, I never thought the reverand said anything too explosive, so I don't think he has anything to apologize for.
I'm actually disappointed Obama; a man with supposed integrity; couldn't stand by him...instead he dismissed him. Obama could have easily said, look our actions abroad have consequences, that's all the reverand meant about our chickens coming home to roost...Ron Paul had the balls to say it in front of republicans.
Then again, it's politics, and Obama is just playing the political game...which makes him just another politician. - BryanG412, on 03/28/2008, -10/+17ahh you missed a word, the quote is this...
"perhaps this nation's first (and maybe even only) honest candidate offering himself for public service as the person to occupy the Oval Office."
notice the word "perhaps"...do you work for fox news? - kynn, on 03/28/2008, -5/+12Clearly, he holds Jews to a very high standard, and Kantor failed it by a big margin.
- Aslan72, on 03/28/2008, -4/+11read: regardless of the facts or that I didn't even listen to the whole sermon myself I'm just going to believe what fox news tells me.
- swrostmore, on 03/28/2008, -2/+8Oh so there's video evidence of racism? Then show me the quote! What has Wright said on video that is racist?
- sqwirl, on 03/28/2008, -1/+7I like how people digg you down without answering your question.
- swrostmore, on 03/28/2008, -2/+8So your evidence is a made-up quote (who's he quoting when he says "we?") from an author who's agenda is obviously to tie Black Theology to racism (just look at his book title)?
Here's the TUCC's interpretation, from their website:
Black liberation theology defines Africans and African Americans as subjects – not the objects which colonizers and oppressors have consistently defined “others” as.
• We [African Americans] were always seen as objects. When we started defining ourselves, it scared those who try to control others by naming them and defining them for them; Oppressors do not like “others” defining themselves.
• To have a church whose theological perspective starts from the vantage point of Black liberation theology being its center, is not to say that African or African American people are superior to any one else.
• African-centered thought, unlike Eurocentrism, does not assume superiority and look at everyone else as being inferior. -
