- gbro, on 10/19/2007, -0/+21. This is inaccurate;
2. This is really old (GTA: Vice City came out this year did it?);
3. It might be a joke considering the ridiculous leaps made. - kalkin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1just great. another website trying to increase the hits with an article intended to flame. keeps their sponsors happy though and, after all, that's what's important in this ***** up world of ours
- coffeeserpent, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0you know i work in a school with kids and your right, games can influence kids, but maybe parents should actually pay attention to their kids instead of pawning them off in front of tvs and video games and then blaming everyone else for it. or maybe you can be another one of those " i blame everything but myself for my own problems" people. i know my kids do not play mature games, and stores wont even let them buy them, the fact is in most cases parents have to buy them games for the kids if they are mature rated, so who is even more at fault? you need to get off the fear-driven, ignorant "blame games for how kids are" bandwagon and for gods sake use the brain god gave you.
- naturewoman56, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Hey, video games don't hurt anybody - right???!! Bigotry for profit - now I've heard everything. I like the idea of the ICED video game as a response to this onslaught of violence and hatred. Anyone who believes that allowing kids to play games like Halo 3, Resident Evil, and Grand Theft Auto doesn't do any harm, hasn't worked in a school and heard the conversations of the young children who think all of this is funny.
- Iamdanny0, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I am sick and tired of hearing this worn out and idiotic view. Ergo, I have decided to lay out some points that counteract those laid out here: a) Video games rarely encourage racism, those feeble minded enough to allow themselves to be warped by a game aren't worthy of consideration, b) where were you when all the other resident evils were out and all the zombies were white? It's fine to kill white people? Surely the main argument against the R.E series is violence? Or are you determined to be some kind of campaigner who stands up for the rights of the ethnic minorities? If so, why single out resident evil? c) Leading on from that, movies have portrayed latinos as thugs and Russians as cold blooded, alcoholic assassins. Why is there no mention of that in your, frankly ignorant, rant? Why aren't you berating the creators of those movies? I believe you saw the fuss surrounding the new Resident evil and jumped on the bandwagon in the hope that someone would praise you for drawing our attention to this 'new evil'. However, you are fully entitled to your opinion as I am to mine.
Daniel Marwood, 15 - coffeeserpent, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0this whole article smacks of inconsistencies to make a shallow point for the author. the problem is that the author gives just enough fact with the fiction that is being presented to a public that is more than willing to bite on the first thing they see and start waving a racist flag ( can someone say "unwashed masses"?) anyhow here are some examples:
"Also unlike moviegoers, gamers get to play in the privacy of their homes as well as on their phones and other devices in the rapidly growing mobile market, a market where nonwhites are the fastest-growing consumer group." - this is only half true, they have the statement of rapidly growing mobile market riding on the factual statement that you can play res evil games at home or on gaming portables ( for example the psp? but you need CFW to do it, and how many people not-in-the-know can do it?). in essense they want general populace to believe that now all mobile tech is becoming racist.
(watch as vague statements coupled with semi-factual ones creates pure fact in the uneducated mind.)
here is another: "Players of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, this year's most popular video game, will not just see images of drug dealers; they become characters in the virtual world who mouth such statements as "I hate these Haitians" and "Stinking nest of Haitians, we gonna kill 'em all!"
now tell me, wasnt grand theft auto: vc out a few years ago? actually more than a few years ago? and while yes this does happen in the game, they are completely glazing over the fact that A: this game is not NEW, and the NEWEST version has you play an AFRICAN AMERICAN gangster fighting other (mainly) AFRICAN AMERICAN gangsters. while i will agree its a crappy game to make money off people who love pop cultures made-up "Thug" lifestyle, i will not say its racist. the fact is that for this so-called journalist, he took a few consistent things about some games and then started screaming "hidden agenda" without actually going deeper. this of course like i say because the journalist knows that the general public is easy to scare and therefore easy to influence.
finally take for example this ridiculous article is making a statement about a series of games based in another country, IE japan. I live in japan now and i will tell you this: dont blame malice when stupidity is a better answer. i am not saying that japanese people are stupid, but its little more than ignorance. I believe if i read this correctly that the creators took a good amount of influence from the FICTION that in haiti they have religious rituals that revolve around zombies and the undead, is that not so? so how can you say this is racism? not to mention i know for fact that american television has aired shows on intelligent channels such as discovery or learning (lol) that talk about haitian voodoo and zombification. NOW, couple this with the japanese ignorance of racism, because truly if you tell the general public what the word for racism is in japanese, they do not know, or even care. the simple fact is that japanese people may or may not be racist and be ignorant of it because they dont have information for it, or even a large enough non-japanese culture that will fight for its own rights in the larger japanese cultural context. in the end a japanese person may be racist by a western standard, but they cant be held accountable to it because they do not live in a western culture. and to end it, they dont even know what racism is in most cases.
so when the game ships lets see how rasist it and how much of it is actually pushing racism rather than just being blown out of proportion by a two-bit journalist who wanted to make some money off the fear of people.
