- chownrus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+44Before we get the "Clinton used signing statements" arguement, read this paragraph from the artcle:
"Bush has used signing statements to challenge more than 800 laws that place limits or requirements on the executive branch, saying they intrude on his constitutional powers. By contrast, all previous presidents challenged a combined total of about 600 laws." - millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31But... but... but... CLINTON!!!!
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30"You don't get everything you want. A dictatorship would be a lot easier." - GW Bush, 1998
"I told all four that there are going to be some times where we don't agree with each other, but that's OK. If this were a dictatorship, it would be a heck of a lot easier, just so long as I'm the dictator." - GW Bush, 2000
"A dictatorship would be a heck of a lot easier, there's no question about it." - GW Bush, 2001 - zweben, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28AKA Bush wants to be dictator.
What else is new? - gwolf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27You can’t love you’re country, the constitution, the bill of rights and just plain old civilized human behavior and not hate George Bush.
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27He's actually succeeding?
- Aeiri, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23I'm guessing he's going to do the same thing as Hitler did. During election pass an executive order that states he takes full control of the government in a time of crisis.

These statements were recorded in Gustave Gilbert's transcriptions of conversations with many of the Nazi leaders during the War Crimes Trials at Nuremberg, and later published in Gilbert's Nuremberg Diary(1947).
Göring "Why, of course, the people don't want war. Why would some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best that he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece. Naturally, the common people don't want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship."
Gilbert: "There is one difference. In a democracy, the people have some say in the matter through their elected representatives, and in the United States only Congress can declare wars."
Göring "Oh, that is all well and good, but, voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country." - whiskeymb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24there is some confussion here. Clinton did use signing statements. but the big difference is that clinton's signing statements didn't always say he was going to interpret the law how he sees fit. read bush's signing statements, a LOT of them have
"in a manner consistent with the President's constitutional authority to supervise the unitary executive branch and to recommend for the consideration of the Congress such measures as he judges necessary and expedient."
that means he is going to read the law how he sees fit. yes, Clinton made a lot of signing statements, but most of clintons were rhetoric about the law, most of bush's are about ignoring the law. - zweben, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22That's not really new either. These days, the only thing that would surprise me is Congress presenting him with an Official Certificate of Dictatorship on a golden platter.
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22History repeats itself.
This isn't some conspiracy theory. This sort of thing has happened before. It will happen again. Hitler assumed power in a similar way. He used a national tragedy to assume rights and powers that allowed him to seize control of the nation's congress, laws and military. I don't have to tell you that he didn't use those powers to protect the German people from the original problem he was tasked with fixing, instead he led them into a prolonged war from which the country is still suffering and millions of innocents died.
See any similarities between that leader and this one? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23You lot really need to get over this left wing/right wing *****.
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Our leader wants to be the all powerful emperor and remove the powers of the senate? Can we just fast forward to the "et tu brute" part?
- shawnfassett, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22ANYTHING Charlie Savage writes is something we should all pay great attention to. Great, Great, Great American reporter!
- tehbishop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19@concept:
Hopefully we all do ... I know I do, but I don't let it end with W, I have enough hate for all of the neocons and their followers. Let them eat cake! - SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19He'll assume that right in summer 2008. Gives us less time to argue about it before the cancelled elections.
- munozm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20I'm surprised Bush hasn't pushed to abolish the 2 term limit.
- miken32, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20This puts a new light on W's bragging about how few bills he's vetoed compared to Clinton!
- gwolf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Yup
- Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Only the smart ones....
- rajkalex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16What do you mean "non-partisan"? The very (Republican) definition of partisan is anything that doesn't support with their party line. Colleges (anything educated related)-partisan, Scientists- partisan, Prosecutors going after them- partisan.... you get the point. The Congressional Research Service has to be partisan, they don't twist the truth when it comes to President Bush.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16why?
the dems do suck i admit, they are just as corrupted as the next guy
but if they are in control of congress, there would atleast be oversight, there would be challenges to everything this president does..
remember when clinton asked for more power to combat terrorism, the republican congress thought it was too much power for a president... and then they give bush that same power and more. It is all partisan politics..
I think it would be almost as dangerous to have the dems in control of all the branches of government.
I honestly think we need more parties to prevent one party from having majority control, so that we can always have the proper checks and ballances.
But yeah not every dem represents te dems, just like not every republican represents the gop. - whiskeymb, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18hahah, non partisan. That won't stop conservatives from trying to disclaim this with their weakest attacks.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16While i dislike them both and bush's name is on the signing statements, everyone knows it is cheney behind the power grab. He admits it and is proud of it.
- gwolf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14They would need an excuse, oh say a nuclear terrorist attack on San Francisco.
I provably shouldn’t be giving them ideas huh. - Joe091, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Maybe if we can get a Democrat President in '08, they will roll back all this bull ***** Bush started.
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Can't he be a power-craving moron? But who's really stupid, Bush who's getting his way or the congress, the courts and the people who're giving him his way?
- concept, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14does everyone on digg hate george w. bush?
- ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13"I honestly believe the Jews are going to Hell"
--George W. Bush, Austin-American Statesman, 1996
Close enough, mibamars. :)
If we continually assume that the administration is populated by idiots, if we continually underestimate clear displays of abused power, we have only ourselves to blame for them ultimately outsmarting us. - concept, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10http://www.rawstory.com/news/2006/Book_Bush_told_reporter_Jews_are_0902.html
theres a news article to back that up, not sure if its fabricated or not.... - guine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Yeah, but im guessing people that make $168K currently have at least 84 or 85% of the wealth in the country
- TheZorch, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16Bush is to Amercia as Chancelor Palpatine was to the Republic
Bush is to America as President Clark was to Earth Gov. - scott1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I think he's going for Emperor...of the Imperialist states of America...
For some reason I think were living in the point in history where we turn form a republic into an empire...But I think we need some more civil wars first. - toppgun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10well, bush appointed the supreme court justices so they are on his side. the congress is controlled by his party (11/7 it ends). there is no balance, they are not checking each other.
"i pledge allegience to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which is stands, one nation, indivisible with liberty and justice for all"
think about each word in this statement and how they have been violated by the executive and legislative allience.
republic- diebold took care of that
liberty and justice for all- gitmo and patriot act/ Military Commissions Act of 2006 took care of that - WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I'm guessing they won't. Dems and Reps are both in it for the money and control, and each will only be too happy to abuse their new powers when given the opportunity. Do you realize the astronomical sums of money made by Bush and his friends during his presidency? Billions and billions of dollars have shifted hands to friends of the administration. I doubt Dems will fare much better when given the opportunity to plunder vast sums of money from the country.
The best we can hope is to have a representative branch (congress & senate) controlled by one party and the executive controlled by another, and at least no extreme harm will be done due to partisan deadlock. - JustinGN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Seeing how Tony Blair is on his way out, seeking Political Asylum (Especially now that Habeas Corpus is dead and buried) seems like a better and better idea.
- labmouse42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@concept
Lets see, Clinton took office how many years ago? Wan't it about 12 years ago?
Given inflation rate (~2%), how many more Americans are making more than $168K a year? Pulling a number of of the air, I would guess that 4% sounds reasonable.
Trying to credit Bush for that is akin to trying to credit Clinton for the .com economic boom.
ps - thanks for the link, ill check it out :D - gwolf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6A good sociopath can be very disarming, knows how to make you believe he’s exactly what he wants. They are expert at getting you to believe they are someone they are not. George Bush isn’t as inept as is widely believed. He and his friends are cold and calculating, always always calculating. My advice to you is forget about what they say, watch the hands.
- tmach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Actually, the supreme court is just about even right now... Chief Justice Roberts and Justices Scalia, Thomas, and Alito are thought of as the Court's conservative wing, Justices Stevens, Souter, Ginsburg and Breyer are generally thought of as the Court's liberal wing, and Justice Kennedy is considered a moderate conservative, and the swing vote who usually determines the outcome of close cases (Ripped from Wikipedia)
- ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It's real. I'm from Austin. I read the article. You can probably find it online.
Why do you think Ann Richards rode him so hard? - labmouse42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You have to admire how Bush wants to be the lead contender in everything.
#1 is infringing on personal privacy
#1 on unlawful arrest
#1 on selectively enforcing laws
#1 on driving international terrorism
#1 on international military aggression
I wonder what else Bush is going to strive to be #1 on for the rest of his term. - willcode4beer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4
I don't hate bush. I do challenge him (and anyone else) who works to destroy or hurt the constitution.
I love my country. I took an oath to protect and defend the Constituion.
http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/faq/oaths.htm - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6HMM let me guess the mass judge that legalized gay marriage? The judicial branch doesn't make laws it interprets them. The religious right are just pissed they don't have enough people in the mass legislator to make an amendment. The legislator branch has the power to override judges. Activist judges is a made up term. The problem is congress making extremely vague laws and another problems is that alot of them don't understand constitutional law, whereas judges actually studied it.
Unless you give me real examples i will assume this is what you are talking about and it is BS.
LOL even newt wants easier power to overturn judges.. having it full of gop appointees isnt good enough, they must rule the way the president wants. - Altotus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Only the Americans, Europeans, Asians, and folks in the Middle East. Everyone else just thinks of him as a simpleton. (I hope I don't get arrested for saying that).
- ichbinladen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Why not? Idiot.
- labmouse42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You will really see if Bush is trying to dictatorship when he is scheduled to come out of office.
Will he step down or claim that he must stay in power to "prevent terrorism" - streak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6In one of his debates with Al Gore, George Bush expressed his understanding that the president is expected to lead the nation by standing on the bully pulpit. What he doesn't seem to appreciate, though, is that just being a stupid @sshole doesn't cut it.
- Langford, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5If the president can get away with the stuff Bush has, maybe it's not too outrageous to suggest we might be better off with a system that didn't have a president in it. Other nations have done this. Probably nearly impossible to get that kind of amendment passed though.
- SoullessDragon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Only problem with this is that Bush isn't smart enough... to... do... anything.
So, I hope he is trying to do this because I know he will fair miserably and the opposite of what he intended will happen - brimg87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Who says Bush is the one who is making the decisions? Maybe he's just puppet, you know, a public figurehead. Meanwhile someone like Cheney is the one really in power. Just a thought...
- willcode4beer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2">>single bill, making it impractical to veto the entire package because
>>some parts are flawed."
there in lies the problem. If any single piece of a bill, no matter how small, is flawed, then veto the damn bill. If enough of them get vetoed, maybe the congress will reduce the amount of crap in them. -
