RedState Tells Readers Scoop Developers Are All Liberals
firedoglake.com — Eagle Publishing obviously didn't make enough money to cover costs and all Scoop developers are evil leftists who won't fix the site for free.

- gonzone, on 01/08/2008, -3/+14According to Hoovers, Eagle Publishing had $8.3 million in sales in 2006.
- smacksaw, on 01/08/2008, -10/+7Yeah, and for the last few years GM has had BILLIONS in sales and operating losses of BILLIONS more.
Taking a sales statistic out of context like that is a lie. If they aren't in the black, how can they get 25k to fix the stupid website?- mikelieman, on 01/08/2008, -1/+28Know what's IN CONTEXT?
Red State started with Scoop...
Their management FAILED TO PROPERLY DEPLOY, MAINTAIN AND SCALE their site using Scoop.
Then Red State moved to Drupal...
Their management FAILED TO PROPERLY DEPLOY, MAINTAIN AND SCALE their site using Drupal.
NOW Red State wants to pass round the hat so they can move to Django.
What do you think, give their track-record, their chances are of properly deploying, maintaining and scaling their site under Django?
The *REAL* problem is that they're out of their comfort zone, and skill sets, and they think the solution to their own management structure failings and lack of technical skills is blaming and flailing around trying product after product... It's not Red State's SOFTWARE INFRASTRUCTURE is defective.
Red State's MANAGEMENT INFRASTRUCTURE is defective.
1st rule of getting out of a hole: Stop Digging.
I know that's painful, to see that their management is that immature and unseasoned, but the clear evidence is there.
NOW, that I've given them, gratis, a $25,000 analysis of their REAL PROBLEMS, they can stop whining about how people aren't generous to them...
Redstate, please contact me off-list if you want this solved -- at reasonable rates.- smacksaw, on 01/08/2008, -1/+11Well, I can't test the veracity of your claim, but it sure seems believable to me. I think it proves my point (if you were trying to help do that) which is these people are so incompetent that they are not turning a profit and their gross sales and their net profit are written in differently-couloured inks - black and then red.
- texpundit, on 01/08/2008, -0/+6Trust me; he's right. I've met the guys who started Redstate on multiple occasions and they're just smart enough to be dangerous when it comes to building a site. They simply don't have the skills to roll out and manage a site as large as Redstate.
And don't even get me started on what kind of arrogant pricks they are personally.

- thebaron2, on 01/08/2008, -1/+1I think you missed the point - regardless of the mismanagement at RedState, saying that a company's sales were $X Million last year is meaningless as it relates to how much capital they have available for overhead and reinvestment. My sales can be $50 million dollars, but if it cost me $60 million to generate that $50 million then I'm still broke.
I don't think SmackSaw was saying anything other than that.
- smacksaw, on 01/08/2008, -1/+11Well, I can't test the veracity of your claim, but it sure seems believable to me. - cornswalled, on 01/08/2008, -1/+4How in God's name can they have Billions in operating losses? What are they doing, rolling their own cigars with $100 bills? What are they doing to incur Billions in expenses?
- thebaron2, on 01/08/2008, -0/+3Take a look at their income statement:
http://finance.yahoo.com/q/is?s=GM&annual
I'm sure more detailed info is available if you want to dig. Looks to me like their Interest Expenses of ~$17 million put them in the red.

- IrishJoe, on 01/08/2008, -5/+73But capitalism isn't about doing work for free, it's about finding the highest price for your goods or services thereby creating free and open markets. Why wouldn't RedState want to support capitalism. Are they a bunch of leftist pinko commies?
- DRINKxREDxBULL, on 01/08/2008, -26/+7No. Capitalism is about voluntary associations and the ability of two (or more) individuals to decide for themselves the worth of their own labor/goods. Which is exactly what happened.
- 1159, on 01/08/2008, -3/+51It's actually quite hilarious. I get Redstate emails mainly because I like to keep abreast of what fires these kooks up, and when I read that the "liberal left" was somehow responsible for Redstate's lack of capable coding talent I had to laugh. Wait, it's Hillary's, NO! Obama Hussein's fault!!
From Redstate:
"RedState earns Eagle exactly zero dollars."
Surprising indeed...- Tiak, on 01/08/2008, -13/+3Oh, come on, they obviously are investing all revenues back into the site...
By the way, does anybody else want their CMS fixed for the nominal fee of $25,000 plus the anual revenue of two banner ads on a high-traffic site?... This week only I have a $50 off offer.- Fordi, on 01/08/2008, -3/+2Both Scoop and Drupal are free and easy to set up, but difficult to scale. If they wanted a good, scalable CMS, the company I work for regularly does end-to-end (hosting, setup, design, extraaneous coding, and support) service for the nifty price tag of around $25k (init) and $5k/year.
Of course, you get what you pay for. If you're relying on FOSS software in a business setting, you should have at least one qualified code monkey in your firm to keep the damned thing running. Otherwise, you're just dicking around.- janeuner, on 01/08/2008, -0/+3Yay viral advertising.
Drupal scales quite well....you just have to read the documentation.- Fordi, on 01/10/2008, -0/+1Viral advertising implies that I linked to my company. I didn't, and I'd prefer not to; we're small (about 10 people, including interns) and have a full boat project right now.
Meanwhile, yes, scaling Drupal implies reading the manual - which RedState refused to do. RedState basically demanded that volunteer develoopers break their backs to fix a caching problem stemming from insufficient system resources to handle their traffic load. In short, they wanted, free, to have the software rewritten so they wouldn't have to upgrade their damned servers.
We call those "Bad clients".

- martalli, on 01/08/2008, -2/+10I was laughing when I read that, too. It's funny to hear that the online community is leftist...when it has been a libertarian haven since the dawning days of the usenet...Now, I doubt that the libertarian developers are going to do anything for free, except maybe for Ron Paul.
- jstohler, on 01/08/2008, -0/+15As Eli says, "Wow. The Left sneakily created an online commenting platform and lured Redstate onto it, knowing that they wouldn't be able to find enough flying codemonkeys to maintain it. Best. *****. Ever."
- elhaf, on 01/08/2008, -1/+14On top of all that, Dailykos offered to share their improvements to Scoop with Redstate, but they turned him down.
- CorpT, on 01/08/2008, -0/+8Th whole site has basically been a joke from the start. The origins of it (Tristero I believe) were decent, but the idiots in charge now couldn't manage/write/develop anything to save their lives. You know it's bad when they're blaming conspiracies for their inadequacies.
- Tiak, on 01/08/2008, -13/+3Oh, come on, they obviously are investing all revenues back into the site...
- Mommybrain, on 01/08/2008, -4/+52Of course, we all know that software development has a know liberal bias...
- zomgflamer, on 01/08/2008, -3/+6I think the color red is very flamboyant. Hypocrites...
- BigJStudd, on 01/08/2008, -3/+47As a coder who has been ripped off before, I can only imagine how much worse it would be to have political partisans calling me a "commie" for not doing the work.
Dugg - an important story to get out.- martalli, on 01/08/2008, -1/+15Especially a conservative rag upset for not getting free or low-cost support....who is the communist there?
- mleaman, on 01/08/2008, -2/+30Hah! Burned by Leftist Conservative Capitalism!
- smacksaw, on 01/08/2008, -2/+32All pay being equal, why would you want to work for a site that hates you?
They should pay more. Even lefty programmers have their price.- Fordi, on 01/08/2008, -1/+13As a coder, I'd have no problem doing work for someone who hates me - as long as they like the work enough to pay me.
Though, I don't think I'd take a job from RedState. Why? They have a history of bitching about things that are stated up front in the software package.
IE: If scoop's not performing well i's because YOU CHEAPED OUT ON THE ***** SERVER.
- Fordi, on 01/08/2008, -1/+13As a coder, I'd have no problem doing work for someone who hates me - as long as they like the work enough to pay me.
- tomdurkin, on 01/08/2008, -2/+32Amazing. They are failures, and beg for welfare to help them out. Of course, they couldn't be failures because they don't know much, so it MUST be their enemies fault.
- Linua, on 01/09/2008, -0/+5It's always the enemies fault. For one to admit a problem, oh no, don't do that, whatever you do...... Don't be humble and honest, please god no.
- MadKennyP, on 01/08/2008, -3/+51Looks like the Conservatives better start paying at least nominal respect to scientists and intellectuals. Hard to keep those servers running solely using graduates of Liberty University's theology program.
- 1159, on 01/10/2008, -0/+2Dude, I wish I could digg up ten times.
- tomdurkin, on 01/08/2008, -3/+14Maybe they should hire Holy Joe Lieberman's "internet experts". Although both groups are incompetent nuts, Holy Joe's guys are probably not working right now--unless they are working for McCain.
- nova912, on 01/08/2008, -3/+32"I'll fix it but you must accept evolution"
- airiox, on 01/08/2008, -2/+19Uhhh, money talks. They surely could find someone that would code their site for them if they paid them properly no matter what it was for.
What kind of retarded blog tries to bilk their readers into shelling out 25k when it is obvious they are making money off of advertising. Why should the reader have to dip into his own pocket because someone doesn't know how to manage money and plan ahead? And 25k should be able to buy them one hell of a site. What happened to being fiscally conservative and living within your means? Just like these "red staters" to spend other people's money like a drunken sailor.
Oh and their site looks very modern and up to date, I don't see what the problem is...
http://redstate.com/stories/miscellanea/redstate_h ...- Tiak, on 01/10/2008, -0/+2The problem would be that they are getting frequent crashes...
- wiggles, on 01/08/2008, -1/+12Sounds to me like a vast left-wing conspiracy! It must have formed to counter the vast right-wing conspiracy. I prefer the vast X-wing conspiracy.
- MacEnvy, on 01/08/2008, -1/+9I like the vast buffalo wing conspiracy myself. It's the conspiracy that goes best with beer (most other conspiracies preferring, of course, crack).
- totorototoro, on 01/08/2008, -2/+22Sounds like Redstate needs their tubes fixed :p
- MammasMilk, on 01/08/2008, -1/+10They got their tubes tied to stop the interweb abortions, now they regret it
- minoss, on 01/08/2008, -1/+22This would be hilarious if it wasn't just so pathetic and sad.
- MammasMilk, on 01/08/2008, -1/+11I'd say it is hilarious all the same
- arTech, on 01/08/2008, -1/+6Ridiculous. But, in all fairness, if they asked me for some help on this, I would have told them to take a hike. Fork over some of that money that you have (you're not some independent website anymore) and hire some coders to clean that mess up.
- sirloin, on 01/08/2008, -1/+34OK let me get this.
developers are liberals.
all teachers and professors are liberals.hollywood is full to the brink with liberals
all the news casters and newstation owners excep fox are liberals
The ABA is liberals when they dont give good ratings to wacko lawyers, but are quote qorthy when they give a good rating to roberts.
The cia are livberals bent to make bush bad and are willing to make america in danger to do it.
scienctist are capitalism hating libs
of course all athesists are libs
scott ritter republican weapons inspecter is a liberal for saying saddam had no wmds
OK if everyone is a liberal, where can you find a conservative outside a church or fox news?
Beginning to think conservatives are some kind of myth, liek demons.- kaelyiesta, on 01/08/2008, -1/+4Don't try to make sense of those claims. The partisan accusations(from any side) usually are evidence of fanaticism, not rational and critical thinking.
There are plenty of conservatives that fall in those listed categories. I myself would be considered conservative by some measures, yet I am an atheist(or more accurately, a skeptic) and developer. - Fordi, on 01/08/2008, -0/+8Eh, ***** it. If their new homebrew CMS is written by the same boneheads that couldn't stabilize a Scoop install, they deserve the valiant rise to bugfreedom that will occur on November 3rd, 2008.
- kaelyiesta, on 01/08/2008, -1/+4Don't try to make sense of those claims. The partisan accusations(from any side) usually are evidence of fanaticism, not rational and critical thinking.
- PHiZ187, on 01/08/2008, -1/+27I read Redstate occasionally, because I am a rabid news junky. And... it is good fro some laughs. This Erick guy is the most out-of-touch, living-in-denial person I have ever encountered. In his world Bush is still respected by America, Republicans have been diligently serving the public for the last 7 years, and Rush Limbaugh has opinions that are believed by everyday Americans.
His flat-out insanity is amusing, but it gives me a false sense of security that the entire right-wing is that pathologically self-deceptive. I know this isn't true, and that the right-wind still has some tricks up their sleeves.- cornswalled, on 01/08/2008, -2/+6Perhaps RedState is in fact run by Liberals who are out to make Conservatives look bad.
- Matri, on 01/09/2008, -0/+7Yeah, the conservatives don't really need any help doing that...
- cornswalled, on 01/08/2008, -2/+6Perhaps RedState is in fact run by Liberals who are out to make Conservatives look bad.
- MammasMilk, on 01/08/2008, -1/+22Maybe anytime ANYTHING crashes it is a left-wing liberal conspiracy.
Windows crashes? Liberal Conspiracy
Mac crashes? Liberal Conspiracy
Internet connection gets dropped... don't blame Comcast.... Liberal Conspiracy
Cat pukes in your shoe? Liberal Conspiracy- Acewrap, on 01/08/2008, -1/+6Mr. Rove? Is that you?
- janeuner, on 01/08/2008, -1/+7You forgot about the terrorism. This broken hard drive hates America.
- omgTHEPATRIOTS, on 01/08/2008, -1/+7They don't call it the blue screen of death for nothing!
- wedges, on 01/08/2008, -2/+15I guess Republicans don't know anything about how technology works. *cough*ted stevens*cough*
- ghogan, on 01/08/2008, -12/+0You know when you are making a difference...when the naysayers come out in droves...
- Acewrap, on 01/08/2008, -1/+13Yeah, but we aren't naysaying, we're mocking.
- janeuner, on 01/08/2008, -0/+9We're the lolsayers.
- cornswalled, on 01/08/2008, -2/+10That was random and unrelated. Are you trying to claim all the comments about RedState's management being incompetent are themselves a Liberal conspiracy?
- ghogan, on 01/08/2008, -6/+1Not at all...I am saying that RedState has made enough of an impact on the political landscape that a blogger such as Hamsher has taken the time to notice. And not only notice, but comment on it. If RedState wasn't in some way representative of the Conservative perspective, then why would she care?
- cornswalled, on 01/08/2008, -2/+8How about the fact that they're making absurd and insulting claims to try and paint themselves as victims because they refuse to actually read some damn documentation? I don't doubt that they've made a difference, but this kind of brain dead babbling about "liberal developers" just makes Conservatives look bad. I'm disgusted that such blatantly stupid people are claiming to represent my views.
If you make a fool of yourself online, people will mock you for it, even if you're a nobody that no one cares about. Trying to spin this as some kind of proof that RedState is making a difference is pathetic. - gernblansted, on 01/08/2008, -0/+6"If RedState wasn't in some way representative of the Conservative perspective, then why would she care?"
If a clown told me his computer doesn't work because of liberals, I would mock him/her here. The statement that was made is the subject. The lack of integrity involved when they try to turn their technical incompetence into a laughably weak political statement is the subject here. I didn't even know much about RedState until I read their appeal to stop the liberal gremlins from taking over their systems. How do pitiful actions like those of RedState's when they demonstrate such ignorance? People have to wonder how other's can be so easily taken, and they talk about it. But then again, most of RedState's readers undoubtedly think of Iraq as the greatest success story in U.S. history. Enough said.
- cornswalled, on 01/08/2008, -2/+8How about the fact that they're making absurd and insulting claims to try and paint themselves as victims because they refuse to actually read some damn documentation? - cornswalled, on 01/08/2008, -1/+14OK, I AM a conservative and I think this is a garbage argument. What the HELL are the claiming the Left did to them? Are they whining because they can't find enough Conservative developers familiar with the platform they use?
- janeuner, on 01/08/2008, -1/+2rtfa
- cornswalled, on 01/08/2008, -1/+6I did read it, their "logic" still makes no damn sense.
- janeuner, on 01/08/2008, -1/+4Then you answered your own question. Welcome to American Politics.
- byronne, on 01/08/2008, -1/+3Well then maybe you're NOT a conservative.
- Nevarius, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2Guess it depends on what kind of conservatism we are talking about. The bible thumping smack-tards that are currently in charge of the republican party or the disenfranchised William F Buckley type of republicans.
- cornswalled, on 01/08/2008, -1/+6I did read it, their "logic" still makes no damn sense.
- Fordi, on 01/08/2008, -0/+4Hell, if they couldn't find a single conservative familiar with Scoop (likely, as Scoop is mostly used on tech and liberal sites), they should have *made* one. You know, snag a Perl developer and sit him infront of an API manual.
Not that political bias has anything to do with how we like to make money. Coding is coding, after all.- bradspangler, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1But Perl developers are ALSO all liberals. ;)
- janeuner, on 01/08/2008, -1/+2rtfa
- elhaf, on 01/08/2008, -2/+8Buried as innacurate. Redstate's readership isn't growing.
- Killwize, on 01/08/2008, -2/+11They call anyone that dose not agree with them "Liberal!" Just in the same way Hitler use to call anyone that went ageist him Alertists! I remember then they started calling Ron Paul Supporters "Liberals" and then banned them from posting about him. LOL
- gttim, on 01/08/2008, -1/+19It gets better. They were offered some free advice to easily fix some of their problems, and they turned it down.
--------(From a DKos comment thread)
One of the Drupal developers showed up in RedState's latest money-pitch thread. In the extremely polite tone that one reserves for complete idiots, he pointed out that RedState had not bothered to ask for help or even participate in the Drupal tech support BBS, then gave them a bit of free help by suggesting that running their production web site in debug mode might be slowing down things a bit.
(For those here that may be liberal but not programmers - debug mode includes special code that tracks program operations and will give information to programmers when they need it, that is, when testing a system. Speed is not important then, as it is in a released product that non-programmers are using. Said code does not belong in a production system as it slows down processing for the end user.)
The developer also pointed out that they were leaving the site wide open for cracker access and told them how to fix that, too.
The managing managers at RedState blew him off. He wished them luck.- janeuner, on 01/08/2008, -1/+5Sadly believable... Got a link?

- cornswalled, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1I just tried to.
- mlfoley, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1I just did.

- boilerplate, on 01/08/2008, -1/+10Redstate, I’d like to introduce you to the free market...Free market, this is Redstate. Well, I'm sure you two have plenty to discuss so I’ll just leave you to it...

Now, is this very conservative? Spending money that you don't have? I thought that's what they accuse liberals of doing?
