- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -24/+216The United States hasn't made as much progress as some people like to think.
- savantidiot, on 05/14/2008, -7/+153"Disgusting" yes
"People like that should be locked up, or better yet, stripped of their citizenship and deported." No.
Your "beloved America" wouldn't be our America if we went around tossing out people we disagree with. - bsmang, on 05/14/2008, -79/+199It's really disgusting how many people are so horribly bigoted in this country. How can people here in my beloved America be so dumb?? People like that should be locked up, or better yet, stripped of their citizenship and deported. Then there are the many cowards who are racist but make up other ***** reasons to try to hide the real one. Disgusting.
- Tekmet, on 05/14/2008, -6/+100Pretty disturbing. I was in some country bar in rural Illinois after serving fire duty, and this biker was watching the news. His girl asks him who he'll vote for, and he says "nobody." When asked why, he states he won't vote for a Republican, woman, or n*****.
Ahhh...21st century...we've waited so long for your enlightenment. - HellDonut, on 05/14/2008, -42/+124What alarms (some) Americans is that he's not white like them. They tend to create these fantasies that Obama is the Muslim trojan horse that'll sell the country to terrorists. Just like you're doing, funny.
- jefuchs, on 05/14/2008, -18/+101The story begins:
"Danielle Ross was alone in an empty room at the Obama campaign headquarters in Kokomo, Ind., a cellphone in one hand, a voter call list in the other. She was stretched out on the carpeted floor wearing laceless sky-blue Converses, stories from the trail on her mind."
Why do people insist on writing news stories in this manner? Just tell what's newsworthy. I don't give a rat's ass what she was wearing or whether she prefers Fop over Dapper Dan. - soupzilla, on 05/14/2008, -3/+58Isn't having the freedom to express your opinions one of the fundamental principles of being American? Even if it's from racists *****...you don't have to like it, but it helps to have a better argument than "they should be locked up", even if we agree...
- AtHomeBoy2000, on 05/14/2008, -8/+59Look at West Virgina and Kentucky. she will win those states 70-30 based purely on policy differences? There are "other factors" that come into play here.
- goodnrg, on 05/14/2008, -10/+51It's a lot easier to reshape the electorate by adding more youth and diversity than changing people's existing biases and prejudice. That's why the 50 state voter registration drive undertaken by the Obama campaign is such a good idea, besides the fact that it gives more people a voice in government.
- inactive, on 05/14/2008, -18/+61Actually, cashman57 said nothing about terrorist. He said quite a bit about taxation, expansion of government, restricting gun ownership, and subservience to the UN, but I don't recall him saying anything about terrorists.
- inactive, on 05/14/2008, -21/+63What's so freaking awesome about this, these Obama volunteers were contacting OTHER DEMOCRATS. DEMOCRATS, YOU FILTHY RACISTS!!
- pimpofpixels, on 05/14/2008, -8/+42You know... this is part of the problem.
I'm not ever going to vote for a 'black person' either.
I'm going to vote for Obama... the MAN, and it has NOTHING to do with his heritage.
We have got to try to open a SUBSTANTIVE debate. If even Obama supporters are talking about race than Obama is really going to be in trouble. - Seldon2639, on 05/14/2008, -4/+39I'm sorry, did you just suggest that we lock people up for their beliefs? That seems counter to the entire "freedom and democracy" thing we've got going on. Freedom of expression and belief doesn't end simply because you disagree with the belief. I find racism as distasteful as anyone else, but we can't punish people for their views (unless those views also involve direct action which harms another person) without making all belief subject to subjugation.
The steps toward fascism always begin with benign intent - rabidjester, on 05/14/2008, -5/+37Did they say they'd never vote for a white guy? Are you being obtuse on purpose?
- inactive, on 05/14/2008, -8/+44End the $2 trillion war in Iraq for starters.
- daleking, on 05/14/2008, -11/+41Don't worry about it, my friends. The Obama campaign is already thinking outside the box to combat racism. They'll simply expand the electoral map.
- brokencode, on 05/14/2008, -7/+35I'm more disgusted that 24 freedom of speech haters dugg your comment.
- sovereign3, on 05/14/2008, -9/+36Because blacks have ALWAYS flocked to the black candidate. That makes all of.... one? I suppose the same argument could be made for whites who for a white person. Is it fair to say they are racist as well? They are voting as they have their choices. Can you really blame an electorate who for the first time can vote for someone who looks like them? I don't think it's fair to say that it is racist to do so.
- br0ck, on 05/14/2008, -6/+34The Global Poverty Act is at http://www.thomas.gov/cgi-bin/query/D?c110:2:./tem ... and the bill is trying to get the main 8 poverty fighting countries to increase efforts to donate 25 billion per year, which would be only 3 billion per year from the US. That's 16 days of the Iraq war ($177mil/day).. wow, what a shining example of what a poor leader he'd be!
- jon30041, on 05/14/2008, -1/+27But... how can she want Fop? I don't want no Fop. I want Dapper Dan. I'm a Dapper Dan man!
On a serious note, though I agree with you... people need a hook. Not everyone is a machine, solely searching for facts. Everything needs to have some sort of entertainment value to it... That, these days, includes focusing on one person and describing their sole situation in the grand scheme. Anything to make the image more vivid to the reader, really. It can't just be 'of the such and such number of Obama volunteers, 38% have encountered racism on the trail.' It doesn't carry personally at all. Get a girl, describe where she is, and then give the facts. It actually works. Not everything they told you in high school was worthless, seriously. - masterm1nd, on 05/14/2008, -7/+31Don't call people idiot when you use 'your' in place of 'you are'
- Kas70, on 05/14/2008, -2/+29Hillary had the black vote but she lost it because of her tactics. Most black voters would vote for Hillary if she got the nomination - most of Hillary's supporters wouldn't do the same for Obama. And blacks make up only 13% of the national population. Different.
- inactive, on 05/14/2008, -11/+35You're amazing. A person dislikes Obama's political agenda and you immediately accuse him of being a racist in hiding. Is that what it has come to now? If a person even disagrees with somebody of another race on political issues, we can just accuse them of being a racist and end the argument?
I'm assuming that you're not a Clinton fan. So how long have you been a sexist in hiding? Wow, look how that works.... - titanmdm, on 05/14/2008, -7/+31The sad thing is that in an electorate that is so razor thin as far as margins, I would wager that racism could be the straw that breaks this campaign in November. Though I'm closest to the libertarian, I'm strongly considering voting Obama just to cancel out the vote of my semi-racist grandfather.
- inactive, on 05/14/2008, -14/+42So why is it not bigoted when black voters openly declare they're voting for Obama because of race?
- kettlehead, on 05/14/2008, -12/+35Oh for *****'s sake. Are you people attacking the Global Poverty act *again*? Have you ever read the bill? You're clearly talking about it through opinions gleaned from the typically severely distorted right-wing nonsense faucets.
Here, educate yourself. Don't be scared, it's not even that long:
http://www.thomas.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c110:H.R.130 ...
It's not at all what you've been told. - Kautylia, on 05/14/2008, -3/+25That is true. However, Obama getting landslide support from black voters in other states stems from the exact same thing.
- mtekk, on 05/14/2008, -6/+30"Your "beloved America" wouldn't be our America if we went around tossing out people we disagree with."
For that would be bigoted. - CrackyJSquirrel, on 05/14/2008, -5/+24In the last election 100% of white people voted for a white person.. RACISTS!!!!!!!!
- chdodd2012, on 05/14/2008, -3/+21I disagree. We have made incredible progress since even the 1960s and 1970s. Yes, it must continue, but overall generation turnover is helping combat racism along with particular legislation.
- wendelgee2, on 05/14/2008, -4/+21You forgot to add: "I reckon...*spit* *CLINK*"
- Mejari, on 05/14/2008, -2/+20Watch the opening to the movie 'Idiocracy', then come back and reevaluate the idiot's chances of being outnumbered.
- VinnieDaMac, on 05/14/2008, -3/+21This makes me sad. Do these racist voters even know that Obama is half-white? If you decide not to vote for Obama, do it because you disagree with his policies, not because of his skin color. People who vote purely based on skin color or gender should not be voting period.
- inactive, on 05/14/2008, -59/+87Yet when 90% of blacks in one state vote for Obama the analysis is that race has no role in their votes.
Righttttttttttt.
Racism is alive and well in ALL races. - msjentay, on 05/14/2008, -23/+43We have two countries which became apparent to most after Bush's 2nd win (I'm still appalled when I see people with Bush/Cheney stickers still on their cars). There's this notion that we have to "fix them" and bring them into the present. They're holding the entire country back in terms of education, social progressiveness; these are the people who embarrass us all when they decide to visit EuroDisney. I say we forget about them completely. Hopefully they'll soon be outnumbered or will decide to leave; unfortunately people who think this way aren't open minded enough to leave the country. Maybe, and this is a long shot, when Obama is president they'll finally see some improvement in their sorry lives and will stop clinging to their fears and prejudices.
- kanvas, on 05/14/2008, -0/+17But he said "Republican" first, right? There's still a chance...
- morel42, on 05/14/2008, -9/+27 It used to amaze me how totally ignorant people are.. It USED to.. But lets be honest.. Anyone who says "hang the darky" Prolly isn't a Democrat in the first place.. And wouldn't vote for one no matter who they'd put up.
I hate people.. Seriously.. It's becoming a problem.. And the fear that these morons usually have about 9 kids by the time they're 28 - chaosium, on 05/14/2008, -11/+28You people are the ruin of our country and make us the target of terrorism.
- sulthernao, on 05/14/2008, -0/+15Hillary led the black vote until Bill Clinton made some dumb remarks about South Carolina.
- Tangaroa, on 05/14/2008, -18/+34I don't recall Obama saying anything about expansion of government, restricting gun ownership, or subservience to the UN either. All he has said about taxation is that he wants to roll back some of Bush's tax cuts because of the deficit they caused but he does not want to raise taxes back to pre-2001 levels.
- drn666, on 05/14/2008, -6/+21@brad3378: You do know that every other western nation on the planet has a working, sustainable socialized health care system, right? Time to stop watching Faux news. All the "5 hour wait times and told what Doc you can see!" fear mongering is nothing but lies. The reason why your current system costs so much is because it channels money into pharma and corporate interests. A true, state operated system would be much cheaper and *yikes* bring Americans up out of what the rest of the world regards as the utter barbarism you currently have.
- s14sh3r, on 05/14/2008, -6/+22Maybe we wouldn't have so many enemies if we would focus on our own country instead of propping up dictators who do our bidding and bombing dictators who don't.
- dangerdeej, on 05/14/2008, -6/+22I'm originally from Kokomo, IN and I'm absolutely embarassed by this story. I know this really only represents a small percentage of the 45-48k from this town, but its absolutely disgusting.
- flashback99, on 05/14/2008, -3/+17that was pretty low. I'd almost call that an O'Reillyism, or maybe even perhaps a retardism?
- Seldon2639, on 05/14/2008, -10/+27True, to an extent, but not entirely accurate. Most of the founding father's were not slave owners, and "beloved America" was always a conglomeration of different cultures and industries. The south, true, had slaves, but most of the middle and northern colonies didn't.
Yes, we were terrorists at the Boston Tea Party, but no one died because of it. The only people who were hurt were a bunch of dandies who didn't have anything to wash down their crumpets. We jumped out from behind bushes and shot British *soldiers* (a distinction to be made about American "terrorism" versus actual terrorism), but never has a war been so courteously declared. It was on parchment, with calligraphy. "Dear King George, we beseech you on this day in Philadelphia to bite me, if you please".
We were illegal immigrants, sort of. Except we did what most groups have done to get land. We fought. We *invaded*. We didn't ask to join existing nations, we booted them and formed our own. Immigration can only be from one country to another. If we tried to force our way into the Iroquois Confederacy, I'd agree
Be more exact in your language if you're going to lambaste people, it makes your argument more effective - fani, on 05/14/2008, -8/+22Do you live in W. Virginia ?
- lordtyros, on 05/14/2008, -1/+14New Journalism *****
- justinx0r, on 05/14/2008, -14/+30But I thought the Republicans were the racist ones? At least, that's what diggers have told me.
- Witchboy, on 05/14/2008, -1/+14Very similar to the nice box you've defined as "liberal."
- doubledowndan, on 05/14/2008, -2/+16I have heard this as well, from the most random sources, but I kind of expected it. It's alarming more that people think they can share that sort of opinion with me and that i think them ignorant for having it really.
But the fact that the man is (almost) the democratic nominee for president, 50 years after civil rights, is pretty damn amazing to me. Thats the eye opener. Not the fact that some americans are racist, some in every culture are racist, and this country has slavery and segregation in its roots. -
