- inactive, on 06/24/2008, -33/+210Folks, I am not a fan of guns, but I support the Bill of Rights and that means all ten amendments. It's the gun owners of America that will make the fascists think twice about false flag attacks, martial law, and totalitarian autocracy. Stay locked and loaded, and stay safe.
- Jimmyb207, on 06/24/2008, -27/+179 The day the feds come to take our guns away, will be the day the 2nd American Revolution will begin.
- stienster, on 06/24/2008, -24/+125so basically, any military agent or agency appointed by "The United States" can have the mentioned weapons, but not the citizens of the same "United States". I firmly believe that every state in this United States should, needs to, secede from "The United States" immediately, for the protection of the (for all intents and purposes) ostracized citizens who are somehow still permitted to reside in "The United States".
- inactive, on 06/24/2008, -24/+102To provide a deterrent to no-knock SWAT raids on wrong addresses and the kinds of abuses the Founders endured during the colonial period?
- inactive, on 06/25/2008, -3/+79Why are we allowed to own guns? Here's the reason that Gorge Washington gave: “A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government.”
~George Washington
That explanation makes it pretty clear that we need to be armed well enough to defend ourselves from the Federal government if need be. Jefferson said the same thing.
We are not guaranteed the right to guns so that we can chase off burglars or shoot pheasants for God's sake! We are guaranteed our right to arms in order to preserve our liberty!

To restore civil liberties and God given freedoms, to stop the Iraq war and other illegal wars, to stop the illegal alien invasion, and to restore the 2nd amendment right to own and bear arms, and finally to get rid of those incompetent corrupt politicians and clean house in US Congress from both Neo-Cons and Neo-Liberals - silentboom, on 06/24/2008, -19/+68The second amendment is the source of all other freedoms. Any society that has given up it's weapons has suffered opression and death by their governments numbering in the hundreds of millions. It's about respect, when that is lost you have no rights at all and will be forced to give up everything. If you don't have the right to defend yourself even if it means your life, you are no longer a free individual. I will not give up my guns and I would hope at least another 10 million of the 300 million here in America would say the same.
- eggmunkee, on 06/24/2008, -3/+53They did it in New Orleans. No one stopped them. This isn't a sit back and wait kind of situation if you care about your rights.
- wishninja, on 06/24/2008, -11/+60I loved when they were thumping on Obama about saying people cling to their guns and religion and the press and conservatives seemed to be on the same team calling him elitist. LOL he was speaking the truth but they can see the reason no one even questioned it. I cling to my guns because my government scares the ***** out of me. Shouldn't that concern someone that such a large number of people feel the same way?
See our government wishes everyone was like Homer Simpson and forget everything they have done. For me history is a long list of the terrible things the USA has done to people, our own people. - D4N747, on 06/24/2008, -2/+49I hoped that people would at least look up the definition of "semi-automatic firearm" before at least commenting, but judging from the multiple comments all concluded with "you only need a pistol" I now see that not many people recognize that a pistol is a semi-automatic firearm (in most cases)
Wikipedia's definition: "A semi-automatic, or self-loading firearm is a gun that requires only a (one) trigger pull for each round that is fired" Which is what the feds (allegedly) want to take away. - stfucupcake, on 06/24/2008, -7/+54I'll tell you why I personally own a semi-auto: pure unadulterated plinking fun.
I'm probably more antiwar than anyone in my community and maybe some might think owning a mini-14 makes me a walking contradiction, but I don't see it that way at all. The fact is that as long as it is legal to own a semi-auto I'll be owning one. I live in the country and cause no harm to any living thing. Heck, I'm even vegetarian!
But, should the world turn upside down and some nutcase entered my realm aimed at my/my families destruction, I have 30 rounds ready for a quick hello how are you. - rossmcd, on 06/24/2008, -3/+49I think he means that he'll politely hand over the unused ammo, but will then proceed to explain that they can't have the guns. Then everybody will have some lemonade and share some good clean jokes they've recently heard.
- PeppermintPig, on 06/25/2008, -8/+52Of course, the victims are the *****!
At what point will you defend your rights? - phoobaar, on 06/24/2008, -8/+48I suggest people write/call their Congressmen and educate them about just what is and isn't an "assault weapon." The bill says: "semiautomatic assault weapon" but there is no such thing. An assault weapon is, by definition, select-fire. Meaning: it has full-auto and/or burst mode.
A semi-auto-only weapon cannot, by definition, be called an "assault weapon."
It is critical that Congress be corrected on this. Every time they use improper language, the public is misinformed and begins to think of any weapon with a spooky profile as a military weapon, which is simply not the case.
Of course, Congress will never change the text, because that's the whole point. - eggmunkee, on 06/24/2008, -6/+46This is the equivalent of asking regarding the first amendment, what do you need to be able to say for?
You need to understand rights. They are not a gift the government gave you. There are reasons--very strong ones--for all the rights listed in the Bill of Rights. They prevent tyranny by the government, they support a free and just society. Read up on the rights of the Jury. And by the way, once you need a license to do something, it is no longer a right. Licensing means permitting you to do something that would otherwise be illegal. - Dimensio, on 06/25/2008, -5/+44"What's the problem? I sure as hell don't need a semi-automatic weapon. "
The bill of rights does not address "need". The "problem" is that there is no rational justification for banning the firearms targeted by the proposed legislation.
"The second amendment is about keeping citizens equally armed with the government so if need be, they can stand up and revolt. However, those days are long gone. The pinnacle of weaponry is no longer a rifle that can shoot 10x per minute. The world has changed"
Are you saying, then, that the protection guaranteed by the Second Amendment should be ignored? I do not believe that your assertion constitutes sound legal reasoning.
"So restricting semi-automatic guns sounds like a good idea. It will be harder for gangs to get their hands on (lets not kid ourselves, they will still be able to find them, but at a higher cost). "
The firearms targeted by the proposed legislation are amongst the least commonly used types of firearms in crimes. Your suggestion has no basis in reality.
" If you find yourself in the situation where you'd need an automatic weapon, you're dead anyway."
You are changing the subject. The proposed legislation targets only semi-automatic firearms. Fully automatic firearms have been restricted since 1934 and they are not in any way affected by the proposed legislation. - Dimensio, on 06/25/2008, -8/+47"First, the bill is about semi-automatic assault weapons, not all firearms."
The types of firearms typically classified as "assault weapons" are less likely than any other class of firearm to be used in a violent crime. There is no justification for banning such firearms. As such, it is not unreasonable to conjecture that such a ban will be the first phase of a total ban on civilian firearms ownership. - imacommi, on 06/25/2008, -4/+39First, why would I want to give up the right to have a proper weapon to defend myself against the gov? You think a regular fire arm is any match for something like an M4?
Second, Last time I checked it's not exactly easy to obtain illegal weapons. That ***** carries a penalty of 25 years so breaking this rule isn't as easy as you make it out to be. Otherwise a whole lot more people would have automatic weapons.
Third, Muskets and Cannons were top of the line when the revolution was fought. It's not like they had a choice in the matter. I guess I look at it like this: I would much rather have a light rifle like an AR-15 if I had to fight the government than a lock and load 22 or whatever else you might want for a few reasons. Primarily because they are a lot better weapons and also because they are a whole lot lighter. You ever try running around with a rifle in your hands for a couple miles? That ***** can really suck, and it sucks a whole lot more if you have a really heavy weapon.
My whole point here isn't to bash you, but think about what you are saying. We need these types of weapons if we ever have to start a revolution. Don't be so quick to give away your freedoms. You will NEVER get them back. - relic180, on 06/24/2008, -38/+72First, the bill is about semi-automatic assault weapons, not all firearms.
Second, if it comes time to use weapons against the government (and it may), last time I checked this was THEIR law so you simply break it.
Third, all you retards who keep citing the American revolution as if that's a REASON to keep semi-automatic assault weapons legal... they were using Muskets and Cannons, they had no global information network, and the government we were fighting against had almost no options other than direct military. Our current nation is much different. - etherreal, on 06/24/2008, -3/+36Eloquently and perfectly stated.
- CoolHandLuke70, on 06/24/2008, -7/+38Amen!
- funktimus, on 06/25/2008, -6/+36How's he an *****? You think they're taking them away to protect us?
1. They're not doing it for that reason.
2. Some people aren't spineless toadies who need government protection/permission. We're told that we have freedom and it's only logical that we would advocate our supposed freedom.
I don't own a gun(s), but if I did I surely wouldn't let some douchebag fatcat with a false sense of reality take them away from me. - leetninja, on 06/25/2008, -4/+34handguns are semi automatic ... this bill is dangerous ...
- jednp79, on 06/24/2008, -18/+48America's new motto: The best part of wakin up, is fascism in your cup.
Hey folks, had your cup of fascism for the day? No you say? Well, we need to get on top of things! Our country cannot continue until you get a good taste of fascism, then you will want it more and more each day. Tastes so good!
So, when will we all be put into detention camps along with our favorite writers? - CaptMonkey, on 06/25/2008, -0/+29I'm all for gun rights, no one's getting their hands on my Garand or my M-1 Carbine, but for *****'s sake, source your quotes. I'm tired of everyone spewing fake quotes from smart people to support their views.
The real quote is: "A free people ought not only to be armed but disciplined; to which end a uniform and well digested plan is requisite: And their safety and interest require that they should promote such manufactories, as tend to render them independent on others, for essential, particularly for military supplies."
http://www.earlyamerica.com/earlyamerica/firsts/so ... - inactive, on 06/25/2008, -10/+40I like how the government calls them "assault" weapons as if anybody who owns one is intending to assault somebody. How about defense weapons or "liberty's teeth".
- Bith8654, on 06/25/2008, -3/+30At this point it's not just liberals pushing for bigger federal government anymore...
- spwpi10, on 06/24/2008, -5/+32Yeah that's totaly what they did in the American revolution.
- goingpostale1, on 06/25/2008, -9/+35They can have my rifles, and the ammunition. The ammo will come in 3 round bursts, and they can have the rifle when I'm out.
- whatthefu, on 06/25/2008, -10/+34HOLY ***** ALL CAPS AND AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF EXCLAMATION POINTS IS ALWAYS NECESSARY!!!!
- jarjarwang, on 06/24/2008, -6/+31Good luck using your "global information network" against me when I come and try to steal your oxen!
- leetninja, on 06/25/2008, -8/+32agreed. ill be right there with you and so wont a lot of other people that arent spineless like cryrightardcry - my second amendment right will not be taken away from me ... whoever tries will regret ever doing so ...
- inactive, on 06/24/2008, -24/+49Fight this, by all means, but the only way to combat tyranny is with cameras, newspapers, and letters to Congress. Armed resistance will only get you killed.
- notoneofus, on 06/25/2008, -2/+25Well, it's a good thing that gangs buy their weapons legally in Chicago. This bill will certainly stop crime in its tracks!
- sealhands, on 06/25/2008, -6/+29they can take away our speech, our right to vote and no one does anything, take away our right to bear arms and americans will finally revolt like they should have done 8 years ago.
- Evolutuon, on 06/25/2008, -6/+29Holy *****. Time to stock up.
- badassninja, on 06/25/2008, -19/+42Why the ***** aren't people arrested for even writing up and trying to pass ***** like this? Anyone trying to pass something that takes a ***** on your rights should be arrested right away. This reminds me, I need to buy a gun and learn how to use it.
- Dimensio, on 06/24/2008, -21/+44I do not understand the relevance of your question.
- apothekari, on 06/25/2008, -6/+28I'm one of those Liberals your Ol' Pal Rush has told you folks about, You know the America haters that want to see terrorists win?!
Well what he didn't tell you is I don't give a good goddamn about you legally owning a gun.I really don't.
Pull your heads outta the sand these non-serving{Bush, Cheney, Limbaugh, Rove never went to Nam even though they were age appropriate}, war mongering, fools have been burying you in for the last decade.
DEFEAT THEM.
Wake up before its too late.
The party of America loving good honorable men like Goldwater and Reagan is gone and all that remains are these pitiful fascist sycophants.
Your fathers and grandfathers would have NEVER allowed Bush and Co to do what they have done and are doing to our Rights, and personal liberties.
They have used your God and his words against you and turned you against your fellow Americans.
STOP letting them get away with this.
Vote Barr, Vote Ron Paul, Vote Obama, Vote Nader, Vote anyone but these Evil men.
WE will honor your beliefs if you honor OURS and together we can make this country great again.
There IS a middle ground even now lets meet there before this Country dissolves around us all. - h4mx0r, on 06/25/2008, -0/+22or when you have cold dead hands.
- etherreal, on 06/25/2008, -1/+23Why hasnt the Taliban been wiped out, then? Why is there still an insurgency in Iraq? Superior weaponry wins battles but not wars.
- relic180, on 06/24/2008, -19/+42The founders had muskets, smart-guy.
And firing on a no-knock SWAT raid will get you killed, even if it's the wrong address. I don't care how bad-ass you think you are. - DeviantDragon, on 06/25/2008, -2/+24Well being that all that link says is that one Republican proposed this, it's a bit of a blanket statement to say RepublicanS want to do this.
