- inactive, on 04/02/2009, -15/+123The Tea Party loons are somehow arguing how Obama made a fool of himself in front or royalty by giving the Queen an iPod. Anyone else find this amusingly ironic?
- inactive, on 04/02/2009, -7/+95OMG The First Lady put her arm around the Queen, she was sooo offended she put her arm around Michelle. OMG President Obama gave the Queen an ipod, Oh that's what she wanted. Morons stop making ***** up, and report the news!
- AgeofMastery, on 04/02/2009, -4/+86She could at least have given him a set of Monty Python DVDs
- kmom5, on 04/02/2009, -9/+88So the Queen asked for one. Wow.. I'd feel like a real loser right now if I had been criticizing him for this.
Talk about the height of silliness. Really, give us all a freaking break. On my list of top ten things to worry about, I have to say that this garbage is not on it. - ironhide, on 04/02/2009, -4/+78Not to mention she already owned a iPod Mini (bought in 2005) and uses a Blackberry.
What gift did Obama get in return? An autographed picture. - niradg, on 04/02/2009, -6/+63The only gifts to foreign dignitaries that Republicans approve of are unwanted backrubs
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -4/+52"...and noted criticism of the gift by an 'etiquette expert'..."
Wow, that guy is probably a major douche. - Echota, on 04/02/2009, -18/+65The Queen Of England know's and appreciate's modern day technology. She loved th ipod! She loves computers and emails often
That's more then we can say about John McSame! - kmom5, on 04/02/2009, -8/+44I do, I do!
I feel for 'em though.. it must really suck to have that egg all over their faces.
Okay, that passed. Now I'm back to laughing and pointing. - normlsparky, on 04/02/2009, -9/+42Look at the bright side - we won't have to watch Glenn Beck cry over the gift now.
- AndrewDB, on 04/02/2009, -6/+35Except for the autographed picture is tradition. It has been for years.
- shupy, on 04/03/2009, -8/+36Funny that that the Queen of England shows more respect to the Obama's than some citizens of the United States.
Sad, we have a president that the world is proud of, and we have a segment of our population that only wants to call names and hurl insults and hope he fails.
It is really kind of sick. - inactive, on 04/02/2009, -2/+29Damn straight!
- CoreyTamas, on 04/03/2009, -2/+27The only reason anyone could see insult in Obama giving an iPod to the Queen is if it came pre-loaded with Nickleback songs.
- kmom5, on 04/02/2009, -3/+27You answered your own question.
"and then assuming that it was another stupid gift". You assumed this why? - kmom5, on 04/02/2009, -4/+28Yes, it is. A bit impersonal, though.
- Elohir, on 04/03/2009, -2/+25She's been the Queen of England for over 50 years, does anyone honestly believe the Queen cares what one visiting dignitary out of thousands gives her as a gift?
- verygoodyear, on 04/03/2009, -8/+30Seriously? The world has just figured out a way of getting us all out of this financial mess, and this is news!?
***** hell... - ironhide, on 04/02/2009, -5/+26So?
- Chooxo, on 04/03/2009, -2/+23It wasn't even the only gift he got her:
FTA: The Obamas recovered a bit in Post's eyes by also giving the Queen a rare songbook signed by Richard Rodgers. One of the queen's favorite musicals is Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma!
Well, with a gift that thoughtful does it really matter whether the iPod was a personal gift or not? Are all these news sources choosing to gloss over the songbook as that would nullify their criticism?
Heck, that's the gift I'd really be stoked about - so why are the news focusing on the iPod, then? Because that's the odd, newsworthy gift. - PeterODactyl, on 04/03/2009, -1/+21The Queen generally doesn't do much shopping at the corner stores.
- unitedkronos, on 04/03/2009, -1/+20I wish I was a fly on the wall to hear what Prince Philip said to Obama, this is a man who once said "Do you still throw spears at each other?" to a indigenous Australian.
http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Prince_Philip,_Duke_o ... - kmom5, on 04/02/2009, -5/+24LOL. It looks like our President was ripped off!
- AgeofMastery, on 04/02/2009, -2/+19Now I know what to do for Xmas. Save me a bunch of $$ too
- Chooxo, on 04/03/2009, -0/+16Hehe, I'd love to see a Biden/Prince Philip conversation.
That's like when two crazy uncles get together. - inactive, on 04/03/2009, -2/+16"Etiquette Expert" is just another name for Complete Tool.
- youliveinfear, on 04/02/2009, -6/+20The problem is, Jerkstores, the majority of stories the anti-Obama crowd trots out are assumptions. Me thinks thou doth protest too much
- paulsmith288, on 04/03/2009, -1/+14Royal Family built on tradition - doesn't matter who it was - they all get the same.
- kmom5, on 04/02/2009, -4/+17That's just eerie, ironhide.. That was my first reaction, also.
- inactive, on 04/02/2009, -8/+20You know what happens when you assume. You make an ass out of yourself.
- Po0py, on 04/03/2009, -1/+13I live in Britain and watch the news regularly. This is the first time I've heard of Obama giving the Queenie an iPod. It's interesting how the media over here are quicker to report the banal news of Michelle and the Queen sharing a hug rather than the other banal news of Obama giving her an iPod which is what the American media seem to be all about. I recall when an Austrailian PM in the 90 put his arm round the Queen it cause a ***** barny of controversy. (It totally breaks protocal, you don't touch the Queen unless she offers you her hand). And he had to apologise.
- demonicume, on 04/03/2009, -2/+13ok, you've just crossed the line. that could ignite a war. I'm gonna need you to calm that down, sir.
- smacksaw, on 04/03/2009, -2/+12Region-free?
- nikhil760, on 04/03/2009, -0/+9The iPod , fit for a Queen !
- DDRSkata, on 04/03/2009, -2/+11I love how many people are like, "This is obviously ***** because it doesn't fit in with the assumptions I already made." Get over yourselves. Sometimes, people are wrong. I was wrong about many of the notions I had about the intentions of the Bush admin (or, at the very least, their ability to fulfill those intentions; I'm going to assume I was wrong about the intentions altogether, but I'm not going to discount the idea that I could've been half-right because I'll never know for sure). Just admit you're wrong and wait until something happens for you to bitch about tomorrow.
- smurfsahoy, on 04/03/2009, -0/+9Well one thing it says is that they actually attempt to travel the world building bridges instead of taking vacations at camp David every other week.
- inactive, on 04/02/2009, -6/+15Here's a hankie.
Talk some more, it's fun to watch. I like to see someone writhe around and can't simply say, "whoopse, my bad." - johnnick, on 04/03/2009, -0/+9Given the amount of complaining coming from K st., it appears the lobbying restrictions are having some effect. The only war Obama campaigned on ending was Iraq. He specifically campaigned on the idea of putting more emphasis on the conflict in Afghanistan.
Any other points you wanted to make? - mabsark, on 04/03/2009, -0/+8You stupid stereotypical dumb mother ***** Yanker. You guys seriously know ***** all about history.
Here's a short lesson.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magna_Carta
"Magna Carta was arguably the most significant early influence on the extensive historical process that led to the rule of constitutional law today in the English speaking world. Magna Carta influenced the development of the common law and many constitutional documents, including the United States Constitution. [1] Many clauses were renewed throughout the Middle Ages, and continued to be renewed as late as the 18th century. By the second half of the 19th century, however, most clauses in their original form had been repealed from English law."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parliament_of_England
Over the centuries, the English Parliament progressively limited the power of the English monarchy which arguably culminated in the English Civil War and the trial and execution of Charles I in 1649. After the restoration of the monarchy under Charles II, the supremacy of parliament was a settled principle and all future English and later British sovereigns were restricted to the role of constitutional monarchs with limited executive authoritry.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_II_of_the_U ...
"In her position as sovereign of multiple states, Elizabeth automatically holds the position of Commander-in-Chief in some of her realms, such as Canada,[123] New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.[124] In the latter, she also serves as Commandant-in-Chief of the Royal Air Force and Lord High Admiral of the Royal Navy. Elizabeth has been installed as Colonel-in-Chief, Captain-General, Air-Commodore-in-Chief, Commissioner, Brigadier, Commandant-in-Chief, and Royal Colonel of at least 96 regiments throughout the Commonwealth, both before and after her accession."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parliament_of_the_Uni ...
"There are three elements to Parliament: the Crown, the House of Lords, and the House of Commons. These three components are separate from each other; no individual may be a part of more than one component. Members of the House of Lords are legally barred from voting in elections for members of the House of Commons; the Sovereign by convention does not vote, although there is no statutory impediment.
As an institution the Crown is still powerful, as Royal Assent is still required for all Bills to become law, through prerogative powers and the appointment of the government. The prerogative powers include among others the abilities to dissolve Parliament, make treaties, declare war, and award honours.
In practice these are always exercised by the monarch on the advice of the Prime Minister and the other ministers of the government. The monarch also chooses the Prime Minister, who then forms a government from members of the houses of parliament. This must be someone who can command a majority in the House of Commons. This is usually a straightforward decision, though occasionally the monarch has to make a judgment, as in the appointment of Alec Douglas-Home in 1963 when it was thought that the incumbent Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan, had contracted a terminal cancer." - Rchapman8, on 04/03/2009, -3/+11I heard she was gonna give him some DVDs but the even she knows about DVD Regions
- taibo, on 04/03/2009, -2/+10Good thing the world doesn't revolve on what you can and can't see.
- vinod1978, on 04/03/2009, -3/+10He'll cry about something else - so we can't win either way.
- Thuktun, on 04/03/2009, -0/+7Sounds like a setup for National Treasure 3 to me.
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -1/+8Then why do they have such difficulty staying on-topic? If they're so damn worried about socialism, WTF does Obama giving the Queen an iPod have to do with that? And you have all this garbage - the issue over teleprompters, Obama's various gaffes, etc., and it's like, where are the real ***** issues? I'm sorry, but for such an important issue, the opposition to Obama seems more like a circus than anything.
- eliminat, on 04/03/2009, -0/+7Well, since there's an actual plan for ending 1 war, an actual discussion on how to handle the second, and MUCH more stringent rules on lobbyists, I would say going quite well for only being in office for less than 3 months with multiple high profile issues needing attention.
Oh... you didn't expect everything to happen instantaneously did you? - smacksaw, on 04/03/2009, -2/+9@Elohir
Actually, she had a crack squad of SAS tape the autographed photo under Obama's chair on Air Force One. When he was in the air, she phoned him and said "Look under your seat, we have a surprise for you" and he found the autographed picture.
True story. - mabsark, on 04/03/2009, -0/+7Stupid Yanker. Great Britain is not a country.
- seala, on 04/03/2009, -0/+7Her Majesty did it first showing just how much she liked Mrs. Obama
- ADVIZR, on 04/03/2009, -4/+10Yes, this is real news because it's actually setting the record straight with facts.
What isn't news is the right-wing tabloid entertainment that spurred reaction: Drudge, Limbaugh, Fox "News" (all of their shows), and others misleading the lemmings who tune in.
And setting the record straight will continue to be news for as long as neocons continue to lie. Unfortunately, they're pathological liars. - NorrisOBE, on 04/03/2009, -2/+8What about a DVD of Spaced or The IT Crowd?
