- slashdotted, on 10/11/2007, -3/+32Also, from today's LA Times: "Cheney claims a non-executive privilege":
"Here's a guy who raises 'executive privilege' to historic levels to exempt himself from all rules and oversight, and now he says he's not part of the executive branch?" said Silverstein. "Here we have a subordinate part of the executive branch asserting independent constitutional authority even against its own superior. It is flabbergasting."
http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-cheney22jun22,0,5258219,full.story?coll=la-headlines-nation - aschocobo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+30First few paragraphs:
"Just past the Oval Office, in the private dining room overlooking the South Lawn, Vice President Cheney joined President Bush at a round parquet table they shared once a week. Cheney brought a four-page text, written in strict secrecy by his lawyer. He carried it back out with him after lunch.
In less than an hour, the document traversed a West Wing circuit that gave its words the power of command. It changed hands four times, according to witnesses, with emphatic instructions to bypass staff review. When it returned to the Oval Office, in a blue portfolio embossed with the presidential seal, Bush pulled a felt-tip pen from his pocket and signed without sitting down. Almost no one else had seen the text.
Cheney's proposal had become a military order from the commander in chief. Foreign terrorism suspects held by the United States were stripped of access to any court -- civilian or military, domestic or foreign. They could be confined indefinitely without charges and would be tried, if at all, in closed "military commissions."
"What the hell just happened?" Secretary of State Colin L. Powell demanded, a witness said, when CNN announced the order that evening, Nov. 13, 2001. National security adviser Condoleezza Rice, incensed, sent an aide to find out. Even witnesses to the Oval Office signing said they did not know the vice president had played any part."
...holy *****... - cornfry182, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19Wow, this comment right above me says almost exactly what I was scrolling down to say myself: Does it seem to anyone at all that it often looks as though Cheney has MORE power than Bush?
- deadowl, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18We could always try brute force: http://digg.com/politics/Anyone_Want_to_Bug_Pelosi_About_Impeaching_Bush_Again
I forgot to mention Cheney, but both ought to be shipped out. We're talking about our own privacy and personal security. We're talking about our own money and federal tax dollars. Beyond that, we're talking about my soon to be brother in law, my cousin, and many friends and family members we all have in Iraq. What do these guys think they can pull? How many lives do they have to step on before Congress gets the guts to stand up? - ButterBuddha, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13Worst Administration Ever
- hawkeye17, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Once again, you Righties attack the messenger instead of dealing with the message. The report was done by the Washington Post and if you had even bothered to read it, you'd know that. You sound like a moron when you make statements like this one. "nothoughtatall"...how ironic huh?
- aschocobo, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10liberalplacebo, TP staffers aren't the ones writing the article, but reporting on, and reposting it, from a much more credible source, The Washington Post.
...though, i will admit that it does beg the question as to why the submitter didn't just link to the original Post article instead of going through a left wing blog...
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/cheney/
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/cheney/chapters/chapter_1/
the WP put it in blog form because it's an extremely long article ( a four part series), which which wraps up this wednesday.
even so, part one is an incredible read, and gives a lot of insight into warped decisions of Cheney, and how Shrub allowed him to hijack the country.
if you are looking for some insight to how your country is currently being run, then please don't dismiss this article, simply because the original is submitted through 'Think Progress'. - jhuebel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I have to agree with you that Washington is missing Common Sense, Reason and Rationalization. Considering the scrutiny that this administration is receiving (and rightly so), I have to wonder if this has been the norm (the VP spying internally) for decades. Frankly, I think politicians have been this crooked for years, this administration is just bad at hiding it. Something needs to change in Washington-- wholesale change-- not just lip service. The truth is, there isn't a single politician today who has the balls to take on Washington-- because they ARE Washington.
The sad truth is that "We The People" can't do anything about it, the corruption is so entrenched in US politics. - ebolaworld, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9Dick Cheney is the President.
- funkspiel, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5The guy should be strung up by his balls.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8I bet you anything he’s tapping Bush’s phone, too.
Poor Bush….only if he knew. - JCritter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Now there is more reason than ever to IMPEACH that son of a bitch!
- SenorCardgage74, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4OK thats it. Shut up. Shut your ***** mouth.
I am so goddamn sick of you faux-jaded ***** and your "Yawn. And this is surprising because?" schtick popping up in every thread.
If you dont have anything of substance to contribute, than ***** off back to your hole and let the grown ups talk.
Every thread theres one of you guys and I'm tried of tripping over your inanity when I scroll downthread.
Were all very impressed with how unimpressed you are. Now ***** off. - GoingPostal, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6liberalplacebo likes to think he is clever. But this is the same exact response he left on a post from a day or two ago. What's wrong? Is the old brain trust bankrupt? Why not try to come up with something intelligent or original? You are just another Bushbot.
- m0j0j0j0, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Every time I see someone driving a vehicle with a Bush/Cheney '04, or a 'W' sticker, I salute them with my middle finger and a big '***** YOU' as I drive by.
- BDLAMB, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Whatever. This is a WAPO story, not a Thinkprogress one.. they are just recycling the news.. (just like we do here, not that I expect you to understand that) Cheney the runaway VP story is all over every major news outlet. By all means please go somewhere else if you feel we aren't discussing what you would like to discuss.
- bonmot5, on 04/08/2009, -0/+3I agree with you also. I watched a video on you tube yesterday. It was a Lou Dobb piece about Bush fulfilling his dads dream of the NWO. I was surprised to see that Lou Dobb did not connect the dots, and see that the first mention of the NWO was in a speech by Bush Sr. on Sept. 11, 1991. Coincidence????
- BDLAMB, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4You obviously didn't even read the article, and your simplistic name-calling and attempt to turn this around into something about Bill Clinton (?) is frankly pathetic and comes off as incomprehensible gibberish to everyone here. Why don't you learn how to read before you try to take up commentary, pal. OK?
- supermanred, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3All hail Warlord Vice-Premier Richard Cheney.
Throw these bums out. - annuaki, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2And you mean to tell me - as a supposedly reasonably well-informed citizen - that after more than six years of this ***** you don't believe that something is seriously wrong in the executive branch?
This isn't liberal fear-mongering. I'm not a liberal, but I can tell you sheerly in terms of legality that this is wrong. It's not about one side trying to defame the other as much as you claim it is. Wire tapping, torture and exorbitant amounts of executive privilege are not things the scary "liberal media" is trying to dig up. Look into the laws these people have passed. This is real. - DougPenn, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Dick and Bush. You knew those two wouldn't work out.
- cherwilco, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2pauleku if ignorance is bliss you must be ECSTATIC!
- anonymuss, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Up until now, the complacency of americans drove me nuts, complaining about your corruptness but never _doing_something_about_it_. Now, i think you are actually powerless to do anything about it. Even if you tried, you couldn't.
- fwedwic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2 I think he said it well :

Or is it just a coincidence helped author "Project for the New American Century," calling for a new Pearl Harbor?
- cherwilco, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2well said SenorCardgage
- fenixadler, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Cheney is the real brain behind the presidency, he is in charge of MILIARTY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX (MAFIA)
he dont want to reveal a lot of papers from his office cuz they are all proof that he is corrupt and making extremely rich in his position
I cannt believe USA ppl is just sitting watching Cr*p on TV about yes USA is winning war while at home the goverment sucks
where is the democracy? - Cyberen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1the problem here is that Cheney seems to be more powerful and more subversive than the President.
And we shouldn't yawn at executive officers acting like the law doesn't apply to them. It demands our attention as American citizens. - wackymacs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'd like to know what you're smoking...
- fwedwic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1and ur retarded
- scabbers, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Everyone rightly laughs at the 9-11 inside job nuts, but we're also laughing REALLY hard at a right-winger talking about ignorance.

- figurearts, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2 "Here we have a subordinate part of the executive branch asserting independent constitutional authority even against its own superior. It is flabbergasting."
It is flabbergasting that someone writing for a major newspaper could not pass a trivia test designed for 7th graders about the US Constitution*. The Vice President is in no way "subordinate" to the President, he is a completely separate elected office.
*A document that does not apply to foreign nationals living in other countries, especially those at war against this very document - fuzzmeister, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I would be willing to bet that most "truthers" are libertarians, putting them on your side of the court.
- grungegbunny, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1very well put Techlords.
- Acewrap, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Thank you so much for your insightful thoughts on the content of the article. I hope your children rebel against you and actually think before they communicate.
- cherwilco, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1wow another one that literally pays ZERO attention to the world around them! HAHAHAHAHA poor lemming
- bonmot5, on 04/08/2009, -1/+1More like just the fall guy. Those above him consider him dispensable. I guarantee, there are plenty more to replace him.
- Cyberen, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I'd say Rove is probably the godfather.
- cielle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0The next time the president decides he needs some downtime, I propose that he go quail hunting with Cheney...
- numbnuts, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Bush - Cheney - Iraq - global warming - BAD ... arrrg ...... whine ...... snivel" ---- where have I heard this 1,000 times before (and thats just the last 2 hours ha ha ha) ... try Reddit, Digg, NPR, NBC, CNN or any other mainstream news channel ha ha ha ..... good lord I think the US population is totally de-sensitized to this constant sniveling about "Bush - Cheyney - Iraq - global warming - BAD ... arrrg" ... did I mention --- I am a pirate Arrrrrg ! -- Ha ha ha ha
- themuffinman, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1FTA:
"At the White House, [White House national security lawyer John] Bellinger sent Rice a blunt..."
Well there's yer problem... - cliffzdude, on 10/11/2007, -9/+8I'm not a fan of Cheney in the least. But. Why post a paraphrased version of the article in the post, why not post the article think progress is referring to? Like the original article in the post, as seen here: http://blog.washingtonpost.com/cheney/chapters/chapter_1/
Possible its becaue the original Post article with all its pesky "text" and "content" is far less machiavellian than the think progress version. - Shink, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2I'm amazed this isn't buried. Folks, try out riggd.com, where the bury brigade can ***** off.
- Muyoso, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Look, im not a fan of Cheney, but Digg has been turned into a freaking clone of Thinkprogress. EVERY story on thinkprogress makes the frontpage of Digg, its a bit ridiculous.
- spideyman, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0What a 'Dick'!! LOL
- sapahi, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0ba ba black sheep!
