- emmettgolf, on 02/19/2009, -20/+69Much like the states in the U.S., the only hope that European countries have is to withdraw from the EU.
- PokeyPoke, on 02/21/2009, -3/+41"Vaclav Klaus of Czechoslovakia" ?
It's the Czech Republic and has been since 1993. - noyurawk, on 02/21/2009, -5/+39Staying neutral is not exactly "resisting" the nazi and italian fascists. The fact that they can afford such stances is based on their geography which makes them an unpractical country to occupy. And they were quite happy to take and manage the nazi's money and spoils of war, and their anonymous banking system is one reason why they are so successful today, happily taking the money of drug lords, dictators and tax evading corporate tycoons of the world. Not as much of a moral beacon to emulate as you might think.
- emmettgolf, on 02/20/2009, -9/+36Putin warns us about socialism and the President of the EU warns Europe. We should listen to these people who have been through it before.
- Arlo003, on 02/20/2009, -20/+47I've got to say, I LOVE THE SWISS. Switzerland resisted Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and now are doing a fine job of staying out of the EU and are the most successful country in Europe as a result of their independence, staying out of foreign wars and trading freely and peacefully with the world. The founding fathers of the United States had the right idea to model America after this fine country. And if the US completely loses its way, I may find myself moving to Switzerland.
- AdHavoc, on 02/21/2009, -6/+29He is not the President of the EU... his country holds the rotating president seat, but that does not make him the "President of the EU."
- PeppermintPig, on 02/20/2009, -11/+28So they walked out? Couldn't handle the truth? How about defend your tyranny?? Oh, you can't? Might look bad to the people you rule over?
- CCoburn3, on 02/20/2009, -19/+36How I wish we had this man as our President.
- nick111, on 02/21/2009, -3/+19Have you actually seen Prague recently? It's a modern European city... comparing it to what the USSR turned it into is... a species of Godwin's law I think.
The corporate press hates the EU. Right-wing Americans hate the EU. Nationalists hate the EU.
I don't.
I come from the EU, and I think it's pretty good to be honest. The countries that most strongly embrace the theories of "freedom" as defined by corporate/nationalistic/right-wing America are the most ***** up.
Ironically, for a while, Russia was also one of these - in the early 90s it turned into an experiment in rampant free-marketism - and was as a consequence, taken over by oligarchs and the currency crashed. Ordinary people had to sell their belongings to eat. Factory workers were paid in the products they were making. A small handful of people became very very rich.
The whole world is pretty ***** up at the moment because our entire economic system appears to be based on a) debt and b) growth, which is unsustainable... but the EU does ok I think. Certainly better than the alternatives. - funklor, on 02/21/2009, -4/+17Yes, the EU is so anti-democratic and unable to tolerate opposition. That's why the country with the nationalist buffon holds the rotating presidency.
- Opheleum, on 02/21/2009, -1/+14"The founding fathers of the United States had the right idea to model America after this fine country."
If they had done that, they would've modeled themselves off a country that was not neutral (had several conflicts earlier that century, as well as later in the Napoleonic era), and was invaded constantly.
Its great that the founding fathers had the foresight to found the U.S. on the principles that they did, but unless Ben Franklin had invented a time machine to see into the present day, they didn't use Switzerland as a model. - stix213, on 02/21/2009, -3/+15Swiss resistance to Nazi Germany consisted of working extremely closely financially with Hitler to make it more attractive for Hitler to leave Switzerland alone than to conquer it. They were capitulators not resistors.
- CCoburn3, on 02/20/2009, -9/+20The EU is about to crash. According to an article that appeared on The Telegraph's website (and was quickly replaced), the EU is going to need $25 trillion to keep its banks afloat. Evidently, they made bad investments in eastern Europe & along the Med.
At any rate, they don't have $25 trillion & there is no way they can get it. Their banking system will soon collapse. The EU will collapse with it. Unfortunately, when their banks collapse, so will ours. - Ymeg, on 02/21/2009, -4/+15You know what else is odd? Putin warned about government intervention and promoted a free(er) market.
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123317069332125243 ...
"Excessive intervention in economic activity and blind faith in the state's omnipotence is another possible mistake."
“Nor should we turn a blind eye to the fact that the spirit of free enterprise, including the principle of personal responsibility of businesspeople, investors, and shareholders for their decisions, is being eroded in the last few months. There is no reason to believe that we can achieve better results by shifting responsibility onto the state.”
He goes on.
Has the rest of the world wised up? - inactive, on 02/20/2009, -8/+18The fact of the matter is most of the European people has been denied a referendom on the EUSSR and those countries that have, have been ignored, Vacav Klaus's words are very encouraging to nationalists, like myself, go Klaus, you speak for all the European peoples. Thanks for this article, i knew he would be trouble for the EUSSR !
- yacinebouatrous, on 02/21/2009, -14/+24yep just like he previously compared the ecologists to the communists and said that they should be eradicated.
The guy is obviously a troll...
besides, WTF does this guy know, his country is like the Zimbabwe of Europe - sstidman, on 02/21/2009, -3/+12"Not so long ago, in our part of Europe we lived in a political system that permitted no alternatives and therefore also no parliamentary opposition," said Klaus. "We learned the bitter lesson that with no opposition, there is no freedom."
Well said. I wish all the partisans out there would learn that even if you don't like the other party, despite how frustrating it can be to get things done, we are all better off with the tension between opposing parties. - inactive, on 02/21/2009, -3/+11There is no Czechoslovakia
There is no EU President. (yet)
Get fact corrects, and try again. - triplescoop, on 02/21/2009, -7/+14The comparison is weak!
- noyurawk, on 02/21/2009, -15/+22Buried for totally biased headline. Dictatorial elitists?
- warriorscot, on 02/21/2009, -3/+10The EU is a good idea it was just about perfect a few years ago as it had just enough power to keep everyone playing nicely together but not to much that they got in peoples faces. Then they took it to far and took an economic union and turned into some attempt at a single European superstate which is just not right for Europe in any way. I'm not saying each country should go completely its own way but part of Europes strength is in its national differences and they are not compatible with each other when brought so close.
Countries don't need to pull out of the EU just show it that there are limits to what will be accepted. - inactive, on 02/21/2009, -3/+9There is no country Czechoslovakia so you may want to invest in a Geography lesson sometime
- vckeating, on 02/21/2009, -0/+6Oh, and don't forget that women couldn't vote in Switzerland until the 1970s. Such a progressive society.
- sprash, on 02/21/2009, -1/+7I wonder why those radical "nationalists" only exist in the UK. It may have to do with the fact that Robert Murdoch controls large amounts of their media.
And no! He does quiet frankly not "speak for all the European peoples". Protectionism never worked and never will. - cruzlee, on 02/21/2009, -6/+11This man sounds like a courageous hero, but he's not. The USSR has no democracy, because of corruption. (think about their ridiculous one-candidate system)
The whole reason this baboon came to power is because he was elected thanks to the checks and balances (rotating presidency for example) built into the European democracy.
In terms of corruption his own country (Czech Rep.) is much closer to the USSR than most other European countries. According to its citizens that is.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Union_statis ... - inactive, on 02/21/2009, -3/+8This man has a set so big I don't see how he sits or walks!!!
- CCoburn3, on 02/20/2009, -5/+9But really there are no "European" people -- in the sense of a united & coherent group. There are British people, French people, Italian people, etc. You point is well taken, but "Europe" has no chance of being united because they are not a people.
- Crazyredivan, on 02/22/2009, -0/+4...actually, the USSR has no democracy because the USSR no longer exists.
- pookydirt, on 02/19/2009, -7/+11Much like the framework of the US, the EU was a good idea when it started.
Somewhere, ignorance and self-serving interpretation of what truly started both of these has gotten twisted and mauled, and now both are in trouble. - DrDragun, on 02/21/2009, -7/+11How the flying ***** are people digging you up? Is this bizarro-Digg? Are you people even reading this guy's post? You hate the EU so much that you are digging up a post promoting EUGENICS. Ethnic paranoia, welcome back to Europe 70 years after Hitler!
Europeans can rightly mock the USA on many issues, but now you embarass yourselves. Ethnic diversity is great, as long as immigrants learn the local language and customs. - mastgrr, on 02/21/2009, -0/+4You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Switzerland isn't a part of the EU, but negotiates every individual EU agreement individually. I.e. they're a part of Schengen and the free market and all of that. So essentially, they're a part of the union without representation.
- bromac, on 02/21/2009, -0/+3Russia as communist, not "socialist", and totalitarianism sucks whether it's from the left or right (like politics is really such a one dimensional line, what a great illusion to polarize people) .
Remember, social programs were one of the things that stopped people from falling flat on their face during the Great Depression. People were starving in the streets! How can your workforce recover when they don't even have a roof over their head? We should listen to history, because it's repeating itself.
It was the huge make work, pork barrel, A through Z departments that did ***** all to fix the depression. So why the ***** are governments just providing make work projects? The market will correct itself.
But people will be better off if they don't become destitute at the drop of a hat, becoming an even bigger burden on society than if you gave them Employment Insurance (a great depression invention) until they got back to work. - inactive, on 02/22/2009, -0/+3Staying neutral is the best path. What's the point in fighting the nazis, then the communists spring up, then the US goes drunk with power waging dozens of minor and major wars in the past few decades.
Switzerland has avoided all the hardships we had to endure, and will avoid them in the future as well, as they don't run on the same currency. The Swiss france never inflated as it was backed by gold, however in the past decade they are now selling off the gold and no longer backing it. So much for the world's last decent currency. - emmettgolf, on 02/20/2009, -4/+7I don't think what happened in the U.S. was planned from the beginning, but it probably was in the EU. The Irish who have, like the rest of Europe, tasted the kool-aid, are actually arguing about whether or not they should approve the Lisbon treaty this time around after they already defeated it once.
Every bank in Europe and the U.S. is intertwined and hosed because of the $500 trillion worth of derivatives that they have created. - Demand911Truth, on 02/22/2009, -1/+4Resist the New World Order!
- BabyWookie, on 02/21/2009, -14/+16He's just an old nationalists coot. Nationalism sucks.
- inactive, on 02/21/2009, -21/+23Vaclav Klaus is a nutjob. Nobody is paying attention to that fool.
- inactive, on 02/22/2009, -1/+3And the Americans capitulated to the FAR WORSE Soviets that took over eastern Europe after America defeated the Nazis.
Gotta love American hypocrisy. America also handed over MILLIONS of russian emigres back to the Soviets who were MASSACRED upon the hand-over exchanges with US help. Google "Operation Keelhaul"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Keelhaul
America liberated no one. We merely instituted our own brand of holocaust, causing 2 million eastern europeans to be murdered by handing them over to the Soviets to be summarily executed. Aggression against aggression only begets more violence. Many WW2 vets still alive today recall handing over Russians, walking away and hearing the shots ring out, with tears in their eyes. - pookydirt, on 02/20/2009, -3/+5Interesting.
I didn't think that the EU was targeted that way from the beginning myself. I do think it may have gotten in over its head with a more ideological than realistic plan... unfortunately a little late for that realization.
I hope people don't think I'm denigrating the framework of the US. What I meant in my above comment is that self serving individuals have taken a wonderful thing and are trying to screw it up so that's it's almost unrecognizable in their interpretations... - tehxen3, on 02/21/2009, -1/+3Isn't there a 12% unemployment rate in Germany, Italy and France? I hope that's working out well for you and 45% of your paycheck that you get to keep.
- cruzlee, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2Yup the worst thing about Russia is that they keep changing their name. Just like Prince.
- rif42, on 02/21/2009, -1/+3Actually ridiculous.
- Gr1nch, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2Are you really suggesting the US listens to Putin?
- bromac, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2Ok then, how about we use the social programs proven to work? Would you call bailing out corporations in order to keep people employed a social program? It's just a name game at that point, and yes if the social program doesn't work, then it should be scrapped
I was mostly pointing out to the OP that Putin calling down socialism is pretty rich, given that the USSR was totalitarian communism, and no where near social programs that have been in place for 70+ years. The US has far more experience with socialism than the Russia and that makes his statement disingenuous.
There is a fine line between keeping a roof over people head, providing affordable health care, and access to education and throwing people jobs that are not long term, and only band-aid the severed artery that the economy is.
*Disclaimer: I'm Canadian. One of the greatest achievements we had from the Depression was universal health care, and I hope that your country also achieves this standard. A healthy society is a more productive one. - nabhoth, on 02/21/2009, -5/+7Ok
Klaus is the George Bush of Eastern Europe
Sold out to lobby just to get richer and richer
I cannot believe that someone here wrote that actually Klaus did something good
He is one of the worst - niczar, on 02/21/2009, -3/+4I can't figure why so many people here praise this dumbass.
- Crazyredivan, on 02/22/2009, -0/+1I was totally with you until you said:
Remember, social programs were one of the things that stopped people from falling flat on their face during the Great Depression.
then:
It was the huge make work, pork barrel, A through Z departments that did ***** all to fix the depression. So why the ***** are governments just providing make work projects?
How can you contradict yourself? Social programs aren't just social security and unemployment; they include anything that is a greater good to society- The Alphabet Administrations may not have directly gotten us out of the Depression (the spending build-up to WWII did that), but it gave people hope, a few bucks in their pocket, and some stability while preserving our parks, documenting the human toll of the Depression, and helping to create a national infrastructure. All I hear every day during the stock report on the news is that the Dow is down because of "low trader and consumer confidence." If you give jobs, you give hope and MAKE that confidence.
I wish I could dig up the first 1/2 of your comment, but the second half's inconsistency prevents it. - manniman, on 02/21/2009, -3/+4he is right - the EU is may not be a dictatorship but it's getting closer to it... it may not kill people all the way down but it might develop this attribut... it's not a real democrazy... that's it! it's a bureaucrazy!
