- gronne, on 10/12/2007, -34/+328When are people going to learn that being critical of Israel's policies does not make you an anti-semite?!!!
That's like saying that you disagree with Sweden on something it's because you hate blondes. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -27/+183I suspect that the accusation is made is to dismiss any criticism of Israel. There's a similar trend in America, where anyone who criticizes Bush for any reason whatsoever is accused of hating America, being anti-American, not supporting our troops, or whatever. Does it make any sense? No. But inflammatory accusations distract from the topic of the criticism, which apparently is easier than intelligibly responding to the criticism or (gasp) admitting that the criticism is valid.
- fredkreuger, on 10/12/2007, -15/+89"LIBDIGGERS HATE FACTS...SORRY BUT PRESSING THE "THUMBS DOWN" BUTTON DOES NOTHING BUT SHOW YOUR VITRIOL FOR ANYTHING NOT DEMOCRAT"
Or -
It shows that we hate caps lock. Douche. - matrox212, on 10/12/2007, -32/+83Agreed.
- Angostura, on 10/12/2007, -11/+57That looks like a set of fairly sensible views from the man Carter, particularly since it was said before it became clear whether or not Hamas would actually soften its stanse on not recognising Israel.
His main points are:
1. Hamas was democratically elected - a bummer, but then that's democracy for you.
2. Given that, if we believe in democracy they should be recognised.
3. Funding and aid should not, however go through Hamas, but direct to the Palestinian people, since Hamas is engaged in violence.
4. There was a "good chance" that Hamas, which has operated a network of successful social and charitable organizations for Palestinians, might evolve into a nonviolent organization.
5, He noted that "what they [Hamas] say and what they do is two different matters" - injecting a note of sceptism about Hamas claims to want a unity government.
So is there anything outstandingly stupid about what the man said? Not that I can see. I might have removed the word "good" from point 4. But Carter is an optimist while also being a shrewd operator. His points are all reasonable from what I can see.
Where do you dissent? - grendelboogie, on 10/12/2007, -10/+55I concur.
from Wikipedia:
In 2002, Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize for his "efforts to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development." Carter has continued his decades-long active involvement with the charity Habitat for Humanity, which builds houses for the needy.
Yep, sounds like a racist to me. - unitedstatians, on 10/12/2007, -15/+59the real reason Equalizer hates Jimmy Carter's critical opinion on Israel.
JIMMY CARTER to CNN's LARRY KING: "You never hear anything about what is happening to the Palestinians by the Israelis. As a matter of fact it's one of the worst cases of oppression that I know of now in the world "
who is he to ctiticize israel? ummmmm.........a Fmr. President of the United States of America. - jnagel, on 10/12/2007, -11/+53@Equalizer
Take time to consider that the comment section is for comments, not for articles
no one wants to read the 5 pages of BS that you posted, get with the program - pype, on 10/12/2007, -12/+49That's a perfectly legit reason to disagree with Sweden.
Dirty Swedes... - gnomon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+40So clever, JordanRL--you've opened everyone's eyes.
P.S. they retain the title "President" even after their term ends. - neptytune, on 10/12/2007, -12/+41Republicans criticize the affirmative action statutes all the time. Does that make them racist? Republicans criticize gay marriage all the time. Does that make them homophobic? In some cases yes, but not in all cases. Carter is criticizing policies. There is nothing wrong with that, and criticism does not make you an anti-semite.
- matrox212, on 10/12/2007, -45/+73The only reason the christian-right cares about Israel is because it's part of the Rapture. They think all the Jews are going to Hell because they don't accept Christ anyways!
This is all self-interest so save your fake outrage. - meepus, on 10/12/2007, -6/+30I've visited some of these settlements as a guest. I'm jewish and recently visited Israel on a college trip... and the settlements are very nice. The fact that they exist in violation of international law and at the expense of the quality of life of thousands of Palestinians is completely inhumane and a travesty. It makes me ashamed of my fellow jews to see so many throw blind support in favor of what Israel is doing in these settlements. It is wrong to needlessly cause so much suffering.
- LesterKing, on 10/12/2007, -8/+32Equalizer, You've been following this story for the past 5 hours.
Why don't you go do something else for a little while? Maybe calm down a bit. - matrox212, on 10/12/2007, -26/+50How is asking a straightfoward and relevant question a game? Oh, I forgot who I was talking to. That Neo-Con logic always gets me.
- duanemoody, on 10/12/2007, -11/+33I am honestly in awe that people chose not to listen, and then lash out at people that are actually doing some good in the world. Calling Jimmy Carter anything other than a peace-seeking humanitarian is both ignorant and sad.
This just shows AGAIN how ignorant and willfully dumb many of the Republicans continually choose to live their lives. It's actually very sad. - ClassicJBC, on 10/12/2007, -19/+41I think Carter was just ahead of his time as president. America didn't deserve him then.
- matrox212, on 10/12/2007, -32/+52Yes or no. Do Jews go to Hell for not accepting Christ as their personal savior?
- ulyssesyt, on 10/12/2007, -8/+27how did Carter "allow" the embassy to be seized? did he pull guards off duty or something? are you stupid?
in what way did he "support" Marcos? you're kidding, right?
an international oversight body oversaw Haitain elections as well, at the request of the Haitain government. Carter was invited. and--since when does the sitting US President get to tell people how to get involved in Haiti's elections? you're kidding, right?
your quote about Tito is absolutely wrong. show me your source (that's not a right-wing blog.)
how is Carter's quote on North Korea an endorsement of character? he made a statement about the leader's capabilities, not his character or moral fiber.
Noriega, a former CIA employee, was quietly put away when he refused to let the CIA and US run the government of his country. or do you not know your history? of course not.
what a right wingnut you are. - ProximaC, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21You're republican and you don't like Carter? No way!!??!?!!
- jonesyhahaha, on 10/12/2007, -10/+23I can only assume, based on the fact that she is a republican, that that woman is insane, or an idiot, or both. Carter is extremely underrated as a president and for what he's done since his presidency.
- weirdbro, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Now there's a PERFECT example of anti-semitism. Wow.
- Daedalus17, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Actually being FOR affirmative action would make them racist.
Racism = Treating People Differently Based on Race
Affirmative Action = Giving People Special Advantages Based on Race
So
Giving People Special Advantages Based on Race = Treating People Differently Based on Race
Thus
Affirmative Action = Racism - hipnerd, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Only if he leaves Mom's basement.
- thepeacemaker, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18One has to only look at the "settlements" by Israelis inside the West Bank to understand the mess. This is not even counting the usurpation of the remainder of Palestine that has resulted in 3 million Palestinian refugees now living in Jordan, Lebanon, and Egypt.
Checkout these "settlement" inhabitated by Jews brought in from Africa, Eastern Europe, Russia, South America, etc:

Lithium is no longer available on credit. - WickedRasputin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16The diplomatic tactics used at Camp David by Carter and his staff were innovative and indeed helped the two parties more easily reach an agreement. So he played a large part. He didn't say he brokered peace by himself, only that he helped.
- VolatileWhimsy, on 10/12/2007, -16/+26No, Jew's do not go to hell, they are the "chosen people"...
Anyway's I think it boils down to who is an ass and who is a decent person, to put it simplified. - freff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11his name IS ubertroll afterall....
- Muyoso, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Oh don't you come to my defense, my post will be dugg down into oblivion.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14@Equalizer
Why is it that people who make factually incorrect or fallacious posts think that being dugg down (because their posts were factually incorrect or fallacious) somehow makes them more correct? As the saying goes, they laughed at Einstein, they laughed at Newton...but they also laughed at Bozo the Clown. You are not being discriminated against, and you are not being censored because you have "the Truth". You are simply wrong, and showing your persecution complex will not gain you the sympathy or viewership you want. Desire for accuracy is not a conservative vs. liberal issue...or at least, I hope it's not. - mrvalue, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Here's why I dugg it down:
Because I hate when people add entire ***** articles as a _comment_ In addition to cluttering the page, it's rude. Provide a link to the article and a short summary. Let me decide if I want to read it. It doesn't matter if I agree with the article or not, I just don't want to see a ridiculously long post that you didn't even write. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17To Equalizer,
You have nullified any point of which you attempted to make in the beginning by acting like a complete and total schmuck on this thread.
What is your grand issue with Carter? That he's a dem?
...I pray for your neighbors, for they get you up close and personal on a daily basis. - VolatileWhimsy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The bible from what I understand states that hell is basically not being in God's presence.. aka ceasing to exist.. But than Christains brought the fire and brimstone at a later date.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+19we muslims don't hate jews or christians infact history shows otherwise - islam ruling of spain for example.
plus the woman on the phone is anti-islam as she says ''islamic terrorist'. - hipnerd, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14Equalizer, since you have lots and lots of free time and have studied the issue. I'm curious what your feelings are about the hundreds of Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories. Are they not a legitimate cause for anger from the Palestinians?
- Ajajadude, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Well, being attacked by a rabbit can be topped by:
almost choking to death on a pretzel!
Anyway, the moment I read Carter let the embassy get taken over, you lost. Unless he was at the embassy coming up with and executing the battle plan, I'd have to say he didn't "let it happen" - unitedstatians, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10There's something about this story I find very hard to swallow. Burden of proof is on the one who makes the claim. I suspect that the accusation is made is to dismiss any criticism of Israel. There's a similar trend in America, where anyone who criticizes Bush for any reason whatsoever is accused of hating America, being anti-American, not supporting our troops, or whatever. Does it make any sense? No. Apparently, inflammatory accusations distract from the topic of the criticism, which apparently is easier than intelligibly responding to the criticism or (gasp) admitting that the criticism is valid.
Anyone remotely familiar with the American political landscape knows that the Israeli lobby plays a very large role in shaping US foreign policy in the Middle East. The Israeli side of the story, their View of the World is Through a sniperscope. This influence has been achieved through clever use of financial muscle and control of large sections of the media from newspapers to cable TV channels to think-tank organization.
Israel is not America, israel is more like a exclusive closed society similiar to a tribe. In other words, Israel is a exclusive democratic apartheid in a high defensive threat level or a closed archetype tribal society ready for territorial warfare with minimal direct representation with the majority being segregated through environmental manipulations and intimidation.
Even American scholars and journalists are afraid to tackle these issues. What is it about Israel that makes us veto every UN resolution that condemns Israeli actions which we Americans consider inhumane and unjust? But of course who dares to stop America's umbilical cord attached spoiled kid from ending the lives of hundreds of people?
pro-Israel groups have significant influence over U.S. Middle East policy, query this be charge an anti-Semitism. @Equalizer i know that you love Israel, I'm not questioning your reasons for the love. What I'm questioning is the actions of an Sovereign entity called "Israel" and "the caller" it does seem somewhat uncalled for to call ex-pres.Carter an anti-Semite. - hipnerd, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Well, the plight of the Palestinians is one of the underlying factors that formed Jimmy Carter's opinions on the Middle East -- so it is exactly on topic. The accusation is that he has an "anti-Israeli bias." I think the opposite is true. I think that he is fairly mainstream in his opinion on Israel. I think the U.S. as a whole is biased against the Palestinians.
So you won't even try to debate? I figured you could find another ridiculously long cut-and-paste opinion from somewhere that you could regurgitate for us. - ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Because, you know, everywhere we look on the news they're talking about the arbitrary imprisonment of Palestinians as young as age 11 for merely being in the same neighborhood as terrorist suspects. Or all of those shots of Jewish Israeli protesters IN Gaza, marching along with Palestinians and getting shot by Israeli soldiers.
No, wait, you only find that stuff on digg being posted by "Anti-Semites." - William01, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Almost no US has ever met a dictator he didn't like. As long as he followed orders.
- crazynuj, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13@ Every One Digg'n hidd down,
Crack open a Euro History book and you will see that the muslims did treat everyone well when the controlled spain. Please if you dont know your history dont digg the comment down.
(On the other hand if you know of an instance where the musilms did act like thugs in Spain please leave a comment with a link about it) - Rorrim, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16Comments are dugg down because diggers en masse don't agree or like the comment. (Like a stupid, arrogant, w/o logic, etc post)
Saying we digg down to hide the facts is sensationlist *****, and you know it.
Dugg down, ya douche. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13Some person called C-SPAN and made bogus comments on air? Damn never seen that before. Dugg down.
- Muyoso, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11You make a valid point. However if republicans might be against abortion, they do not praise people who bomb abortion clinics. Although republicans might be against gay marraige, they do not praise people that call for the extermination of the gays. Although republicans might criticize affirmative action, they do not support or praise people from the KKK gaining public office.
I believe that is the point. - manicdvln, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Another zionist using the anti-semite card, nothing to see here. If I was Jimmy Carter, I wouldn't even dignfy that idiotic accusation with an answer.
- Equalizer, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12His humanitarian work is to be commended and applauded, no question about it...
- freff, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9You fail yet again Gerbil. Carter never claimed that he's brought peace to the Middle East. Ever. He said (and rightly so) that he helped to bring an end to the Israeli/Egyptian war, and he said that he wanted peace in the Middle East for Israel. Next time, try to take the time to actually understand what someone else is saying before you bust out with the sarcasm. Or else, you might look a bit silly.
- freff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@OriginalLucid1
"Facts are stupid things." - Ronald Reagan (1988 Republican National Convention)
Reagan was likely attempting to quote John Adams' "Facts are STUBBORN things"
"Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passion, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence." (John Adams 1770)
Incidentally, I would highly recommend this particular passage from John Adams', "Argument in Defense of the Soldiers in the Boston Massacre Trials" to any from this administration that would be inclined to read it. And take the time to attempt to understand what Mr. Adams was trying to say. - falcoboy7, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14It's true that one can be anti-Israel but not anti-semitic (and are falsely accused of this). However, many anti-semites will disguise their anti-semitism as anti-Israel rhetoric so as to seem more balanced in the public eye. It works both ways.
