- bjornski, on 11/18/2008, -0/+12It's the only way we can "compete" with countries that DO offer single-payer coverage.
- sarahlee, on 11/18/2008, -0/+10Exactly! We keep shooting ourselves in the foot when we refuse to acknowledge the reality that not having a Universal Health Care system is causing a great many of our economic problems.
Had a part in the foreclosure meltdown as well:
Get Sick, Get Out: The Medical Causes of Home Foreclosures
"Based on our study of homeowners going through foreclosures in four states, we find that the standard account fails to represent the facts and thus makes a poor guide for policy. In contrast, we find that half of all foreclosures have medical causes, and we estimate that medical crises put 1.5 million Americans in jeopardy of losing their homes last year.
"Half of all respondents (49%) indicated that their foreclosure was caused in part by a medical problem, including illness or injuries (32%), unmanageable medical bills (23%), lost work due to a medical problem (27%), or caring for sick family members (14%). We also examined objective indicia of medical disruptions in the previous two years, including those respondents paying more than $2,000 of medical bills out of pocket (37%), those losing two or more weeks of work because of injury or illness (30%), those currently disabled and unable to work (8%), and those who used their home equity to pay medical bills (13%). Altogether, seven in ten respondents (69%) reported at least one of these factors. "

- NinaOdell, on 11/18/2008, -0/+6It's a great idea. I'm sorry to say that I don't believe that there is enough political will (even on the part of our President-Elect) to enact Universal Health Care.
If this is an issue close to you consider doing this:
1. Find your Congresspeople (both House and Senate)
http://www.congress.org/congressorg/home/
2. Put your Congresspeople's e-mail addresses into the contacts of your email program.
3. When you find an article like this, click share, and instead of (or on top of) using the "shout" function, use the "email" function.
4. Email the article to your Congresspeople with a concise message illuminating what you want done and why.
I enjoy being represented by two of the most progressive Congresspeople in the Country, so I rarely do this (my precious online poker is being threatened, so I'm acting on that).
You, however, can probably effect a really big change. Please consider following these steps. - maekol, on 11/18/2008, -0/+5thanks for drawing that connection to foreclosures..very useful to know
- katiedogg, on 11/18/2008, -0/+3Very good point.
- sarahlee, on 11/18/2008, -0/+3That is interesting - thanks for the tidbit.
- sarahlee, on 11/18/2008, -0/+3We have 90 cosponsors of HR-676, the Conyers' bill for Expanded Medicare for All. We have a network of nurses, doctors and lay activist who have been working for this for years. And the number of activists is continually growing.
We feel sure that if we can get the bill through Congress, Obama will sign it, so that is where the effort is.
My reps and the editors to a lot of newspapers know me - letters to the editor are powerful pursuaders as well.

- rcook18, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Bailing out the auto companies is a waste of money because they won't build energy efficient cars. Time for some new companies to take over.
- inactive, on 11/18/2008, -1/+1If we're dumb enough to do it, it should be way more than 25B. I'd say enough to buy out Toyota and Honda. That's the only way these GM ass clowns can ever make a profit. Probably a good time too, Japan just announced it was in a recession.
