- Eagle193, on 09/01/2008, -39/+517Looks like Palin may have had the opposite effect from the one McCain was hoping for....
- inactive, on 09/01/2008, -23/+329I suppose this isn't going to matter all that much until November gets closer.
Anyone else pumped for those debates? I think the Obama v. McCain debates will look like the old JFK v. Nixon debates... where one side looks immaculate and the other looks.. retarded. haha.
And of course the VP debate: Biden v. Palin. I'm gonna TiVo that *****! ha. - rstinnett, on 09/01/2008, -17/+230Though I am an Obama supporter, I will say that I don't put much faith in the polls nowadays. Remember that polls are still done the way they have been done for decades -- through land line telephones. Many of the younger generation don't have land line phones (they use their cell as their primary phone) and so you miss them completely. I would argue that Obama has a larger lead than 8 pts because the survey is innaccurate and only measuring a certain segment of the population.
I guess we'll find out come November 4th. - johnnr2, on 09/01/2008, -27/+190Eight points is good!
- Krisgi, on 09/02/2008, -33/+195Oh BAM! aaaaahhhhh...
I can´t wait for November 5th, when this whole nightmare is over... and we can officially forget about John, Cindy, Sarah, Todd, Trick, Truck, Track, Trig, Bristol, Pistol, Piper, Sniper and Tramp.
Bring on Michelle and Barack, America. Bring them on NOW. Let´s finally step into the 21st Century. The Republicans want to drag us back into the Dark Ages. Cuz that´s where feudal lords are most comfortable. - Dereliction, on 09/01/2008, -18/+164This is what surprised me (FTA):
"Interestingly, Palin’s selection may have the greatest effect on men. Seventeen percent of men say they are more likely to vote for McCain as a result, while just 10 percent of women say the same. Eighteen percent of Republicans say they are are more likely to vote for McCain. "
If McCain's choice of Palin was meant to energize women voters to his cause, it has done markedly poor. Even moreso among pro-Hillary women whom, we might suppose, Palin was also meant to inspire toward McCain. Last I saw only 1 in 5 of the pro-Hillary "disgruntled" voters said they would support McCain, even less than before the Palin announcement.
Next up? The debates. I can only image that the debates will further the spread for Obama. McCain has serious issues in terms of his debate and speech presence and Palin vs. Biden? Does anyone really think she is ready for the caliber of debate and pressure she'll be facing when sitting across from Biden on this? Doesn't bode well for McCain from here on out. His only hope is to do *stunningly* well at the RNC but even a great bump, historically, will only net him 3-5 points for a short while. - dave122, on 09/02/2008, -1/+135We don't have debates, we have Q&A's with great little 30 second soundbytes.
- GoneGreen, on 09/02/2008, -28/+157So sad, only 8 points... and McCain is a total train-wreck... wake up people!
- Ianki, on 09/02/2008, -8/+87To be fair, the polling data probably came either during or right after the convention. Bumps of these kinds are usual. Let's see how it turns out in a week.
Good news, though, is that the electoral college has almost always favored Obama by a huge margin. - inkyblue2, on 09/02/2008, -3/+80you're talking about a country that elected george bush. twice. don't get your hopes up.
- inkyblue2, on 09/02/2008, -0/+64whoever dug this down has apparently never watched a televised US presidential election debate; either that, or they just have no standard of reference for what a debate actually is.
i maintain that the debates need to employ someone as enforcer of rhetorical standards. the enforcer's job would be to smack a participant in the head with a wiffle bat every time they try to evade answering a direct question. - mnpilot, on 09/02/2008, -7/+69The RNC looks to be about as exciting as an insurance seminar......
- Suzilla, on 09/02/2008, -6/+62That "messiah" crap is beyond old. It's a strawman that the right-wingers created because they have no REAL issues to discuss, and no good ideas to offer.
Obama said it best: The right-wing just doesn't get it. This election has never been about him; it's about US.
We have problems to solve in this country. Are you going to come help, or will you just sit there stuffin' more straw? - FlaG8r, on 09/02/2008, -4/+59Biden needs to stay focused on attacking McCain and not get too rough with Palin. She'll hang herself if he just leaves her the rope.
- IphtashuFitz, on 09/02/2008, -5/+6018 or 28 points would be even better!
- freshyill, on 09/02/2008, -4/+59I hope Biden doesn't decide to go easy on her. It's going to be an absolute slaughter.
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -5/+55Are you ***** kidding? She's a goddam ex-beauty pageant contestant and tv weathergirl, and you think she's gonna hand Biden, a man known for his debate smarts and rhetorical experience, his 'hat'?
This is utterly delusional.
Her best result would be to not make a fool of herself. If she doesn't look like a complete know-nothing it should be considered a good result. - JonMcL, on 09/02/2008, -10/+56So why is it you want a "regular person" to run the country?
I'm always amazed by Republifans who seem to always use that argument when defending a politician. Somehow being better than "regular" disqualifies you from being a leader. I always thought it was the opposite -- leaders are rare and special.
Bush was always considered a "regular guy." Look how well that worked out for all of us. - xekko, on 09/02/2008, -5/+46If you like polls you'll love these:
http://www.electoral-vote.com/ http://www.perspctv.com/ http://www.zogby.com/50state/ http://www.gallup.com/poll/election2008.aspx http://www.pollster.com/polls/us/08-us-pres-ge-mvo ... - inactive, on 09/02/2008, -9/+46POLLS are misleading!.......
- slumslum, on 09/02/2008, -3/+39For the best poll results I check http://www.realclearpolitics.com/
They use several different polls and give an average of all the polls. Right now they have Obama with a +6 point overall lead.
They also have polls that break it down by state, pretty good site. - beloitpiper, on 09/02/2008, -3/+39It's "jugular", as in the large vein in your neck, not "juggler" a person who tosses flaming bowling pins.
- naner, on 09/02/2008, -1/+37...and Dancer and Prancer and Donner and Blitzen.
- FlaG8r, on 09/02/2008, -2/+37If I remember correctly Ferraro also got less support from women than men. Apparently just throwing any not-ready-for-primetime woman on a ticket and expecting women to flock to it doesn't work.
- FlaG8r, on 09/02/2008, -0/+34While I agree with you, that might be balanced out by the 'Bradley Effect'.
Polls show trends, nothing else. - inactive, on 09/02/2008, -7/+38The problem with america:
People as dumb as this have the right to vote. - treehugger87, on 09/02/2008, -2/+33He will also suffer from her low expectations. Biden will HAVE to mop the floor with her or it will seen as her victory. Remember Kerry/Bush in 2004? Kerry had facts, reason and logic on his side, won all of the debates, but because Bush wasn't seen as totally destroyed by Kerry it was a victory for him.
- chrisemc, on 09/02/2008, -3/+3360% of the time a margin of error of +/- 8% on a poll means that this doesn't mean ***** every time.
- jdenzer, on 09/02/2008, -4/+33@Leaqoffman
What do expect a 15 point lead like Dukakis in 88.
Nice try, the "messiah" excuse does not change the fact that McCain is behind.
And he has almost been behind in every poll. - Depthfunction, on 09/02/2008, -14/+41This has been the Worst. Week. Ever. for the McCain campaign.
And it's only Tuesday. . .
Between the parade of scandals surrounding Palin and the parade of hurricanes distracting voters from the Republican convention, it's no wonder that McSame & McToken's poll numbers would be dropping. - joe122370, on 09/02/2008, -13/+40Kerry was way ahead in the polls at this point too and look how that turned out .
Polls over the weekend showed McCain ahead by 2 pts and dead even in another - treehugger87, on 09/02/2008, -6/+33The "Messiah" moniker comes from the right-wing AM radio propagandists, not from any left-leaning source.
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -14/+40McCain added: "And Sarah has demonstrated she cannot even lead her own small family into adopting her values and positions."
- deleo, on 09/02/2008, -6/+30The Democrats had a good convention, but day 2 into the Republican convention the media is talking about Gustav, Bristol Palin's pregnancy, and how Palin has been a risky pick. Maybe McCain gets a little or no bounce from this convention, but I don't know what will change the dynamic of this race in the next 60 days. You have to think Obama will perform well in the debates, given that he debated Clinton 20 times. The key State polls now show that Obama will get the electoral votes he needs. Obama has a ground game that is worlds better than McCains, and from that article:
"Sixty-seven percent of Obama voters say they enthusiastically support him, which is up from 48 percent who said so before the convention. About a quarter of McCain’s backers are enthusiastic about him"
So unless something really changes, Obama will be the next President of the U.S. - wstokes, on 09/02/2008, -3/+26Actually, I was shocked to be called and participate in a gallop poll yesteday, on my cell phone. The woman who called specifically said the poll was exclusively of cell phone users. I was under the impression they did not have access to or were allowed to call cell phones, go figure.
- BothBarsOn, on 09/02/2008, -2/+24Don't worry. You'll meet the right guy some day.
- sb66, on 09/02/2008, -8/+30No *****, Palin is right wing man in a skirt who can't even control her own kid, let alone run the country.
I bet she doesn't even realize that having no sex education results in teen pregnancies; even with an example on her own doorstep. - RansomHoldiay, on 09/02/2008, -2/+24i would be completely floored if you even knew what a communist actually is. you are just name calling. the 50's ended man. wake up.
- oselznick, on 09/02/2008, -3/+25If Palin is still around by veep debate time, then Biden will have to be very, very careful. Unlike what she says, Palin will be quick to say he was picking on her, taking advantage of her as a woman, bullying her ... you know the drill.
But I doubt she'll last that long, nor was she ever intended to. I think she was nominated for one reason: to take the attention away from the Dems great convention. And the Republicans succeeded yet again in another political trick. Palin will use her daughter as an excuse to resign.
Wanna bet? - SuperVepr308, on 09/02/2008, -0/+21Polls are used to lead people, not give an accurate representation. The MSM will sway these at their will to keep people jumping. Its always been that way.
- bdfariello, on 09/02/2008, -1/+22Who are you to say that Biden won't attack circus-folk? Maybe he has a fear of clowns and will be lashing out in self-defense.
- apastafarian, on 09/01/2008, -14/+33These polls are only useful in keeping the masses interested in the media coverage and watching the ads the coverage is wrapped around. They tell all but nothing about the outcome of the election. BTW, didn't the McCain campaign predict a (ridiculous) 15 point convention bump for Obama? When will they start crowing about the 7 point failure of the Democrats convention?
- bitORlogic, on 09/02/2008, -1/+21That would be penny-wise and pound-foolish. Her announcement seems to have been effective in grabbing the limelight, but unlike the old cliché, not all publicity is good publicity. If she resigns now, McCain's lack of judgment in picking her to begin with will be multiplied greatly. Unless he wants to look like the world's biggest waffler, he's stuck with her.
- TotalHalibut, on 09/02/2008, -11/+31Why do you hate america?
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -11/+30Polls mean jack *****.
- feihung08, on 09/02/2008, -5/+24I remember feeling safe and comfy the day before the election in 2004, then the rednecks chimed in and Bush won. I won't make that mistake again. This pole doesn't make me feel warm and cozy at all. Not one damn bit. We still have a long fight ahead of us and these polls don't mean ***** until it's over!
- dognose, on 09/02/2008, -5/+24I'm amazed you guy are excited about a post convention bump. After the GOP convention and their media blitz set in, then we'll see where things stand. And, even then, we don't look at overall "poll" numbers, you gotta look at the electoral map. If you haven't learned anything from the last few elections, you should learn now. http://electoral-vote.com/
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -9/+27Sure. Quote the freepers and repeat that no-one thinks McCain's choice was incredibly bad. Hope that works out for ya.
- spxiii, on 09/02/2008, -0/+18I do not think it would be appropriate for him to go for her jugglers at that time.
- humbled, on 09/02/2008, -0/+17For the longest time I was certain that Obama would eat McCain alive at debates, but McCain is good at thinking on his feet and he's *really* good coming up with one-liners. That's always the Democrat Downfall in these debates - they try to present nuance, sophistication, knowledge, etc. But they get beaten up by punchy, memorable one-liners. Personally, I hope Obama finds some way to demonstrate his knowledge much more succinctly than Kerry could.
