- mandregorax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14shouldn't campaigns be all about who's better? not who's less bad?, these should be opportunities to show what they can do to help society, not to rely on somebody else's mistake...
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12No, ThinkBox,
Surveillance of the populace is bad. Surveillance of our federal representatives is good. It's different. It's the complete opposite of 1984. - durzagott, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9You know, with enough footage and editing you can make someone look like anything you want. I don't see how this is going to do anything positive for politics. By it's very nature it is a cynical, negative tactic and I hate negative politics.
Plus I don't want to see a bunch of poiticians picking their noses. - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7No we all missed the 5 minutes before this where he made a large positive metaphor comparing the blossoming college age kid to a carefree and curious monkey. Damn the liberal media!
/sarcasm - ka2err, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7If they have nothing to hide then they have nothing to fear from increased surveillance...
- deesnutz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6This is the best thing that ever happened in politics. Why?
Because we get a glimpse of the real politicia.
And not a sound biting polished douche bag.
Hey, in my book a politician is open game. We should have a camera on them 24/7. Maybe then, they won't take so many lobbyist kick backs.
And if you don't like. When then in the famous words of a well known racist ...
"Welcome to America and the real world ... Macacas!"
Here's the new logo for Republicans in 2006 & 2008 ...
http://www.democratgiftshop.com/cgi-bin/store/store.cgi/571511948/liberal_shop/375913 - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5That logic, as in more general not applied to this specific case, I agree that close scrutiny is good for public leaders, but surveillance is not the answer to problems. Cameras can lie in many ways. If people become dependent on the surveillance, then who surveys the surveyors?
- Ratteler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4What it does is take these breed, born, and groomed to be politicos back into the realm of mere mortal humans.
Let's face it. Politics in America these days is about "seeming" electable. Which means our choice of leadership boils down to who the best liar is. It is impossible for an average Joe to even approach public office these days.
Humilating these "gods of politics" and making them more human lowers the bar back to where should be. Where we pick our leaders based on their ideals and values instead of their looks and who spends the most money on them. - BlackCow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Big...errr little brother is watching?
- Willy99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Have you seen the old Kinky Friedman clip - snorting some white powder and singing a cowboy song?
http://tesla.liketelevision.com/liketelevision/tuner.php?channel=1174&format=movie&theme=halloween3
not sure if this helps his campaign or not. I mean, Kinky has always been a little over the top, which is not always a bad thing. - repins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So basically these are staffers paid by politicians to stalk their opponents?
- RedState, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think these videos are a good thing. They remind us that these people are human. However, I'm sure it will get carried to far. To many of these videos I have to say, "So what?" The guy fell alseep, so what? The other guy figured out that his tax plan wouldn't work and he revised it on the spot, so what? What else is new? Do people really care that much? I mean, none of these videos could win the 10,000 AFV with Bob Saget. I think your average american says, "I'd rather see one of them take a shot in the junk or sled into a fence. Then I'd be watching Politicians on YouTube!" - or something close.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The truth is... the guy (or girl) who can really fix this country has too many skeletons in their closet to make it through the primary elections, let alone a national election.
- steveoco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I find it funny that politics is now not about proving how good you are, but how worse your opponent is.
- DirtySnachez, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7I'll bet maybe 5% of the Digg crownd actually bothers to vote.
Doesn't stop them whinging and blabbering like they know how to fix everything though.. - willcode4beer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just pick house reps from the general population. like jury duty.
then (to try to reduce corruption) make it a 3-6 month term, only serve once in a lifetime, get a lifetime pension pension for it. - scottmoss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4You would think that all these mistakes (ick) are only made by Republicans and that Democrats are perfect....
- Thuktun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Curiously, the Geoge Allen "macaca" one is the only one specifically mentioned. Are they seeing a trend based on a single video?
It's kind of a lame story, actually. - willcode4beer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2sorry for being unclear.
I meant select reps like jury duty.
There would be no campaign, people would be randomly chosen, it would be a mandatory civic duty. The lifelong pension would be to offset work interference, reduce corruption, etc... - VolatileWhimsy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Can we get rid of all the politicians and put in just average people who understand the needs of the people?
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3And politics sinks to another all time low.
They wonder why no one respects them? - OnoTadaki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Is that (ick) supposed to be (sic)?
- DirtySnachez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Exactly. You have to choose the lesser of two evils.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Really sad isn't it.
Then we'll end up with not better politicians... But just politicians that are better at hiding their bad side. - OnoTadaki, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I don't know if anyone else found it so, but the Macaca comment REALLY seemed like the Senator was honestly just calling the guy by the name he was told. As if the man walked up to the senator and introduced himself as 'Macaca', and the senator was being polite and had NO IDEA what he was saying.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Nice, I love some truth in video. You can't say "They took me out of context" in a five minute video.
- willcode4beer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hooray for campaign finance reform !
- nalf38, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think that's the point others have been making about "context." The Macaca comment wasn't just considered racist because of the word's literal meaning; the Senator then said something to the effect of "Welcome to America," as if only white people could be natural born citizens. In its total context (which the video provides), I think it's fair to say it was a racist comment.
- steinbeckgirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1average people have jobs and bills. ...not campaign war chests. Let's face it, half of Americans don't want the honest intellectual debate. They want sound bites.
- NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well I'm with you Dirty. It doesn't work on digg but in real life when ever i hear some one bitching about the USA i always ask if they voted. If they say no i just tell them to shut up and try to do something about it next time.
- VolatileWhimsy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I doubt seriously that it would ever come to that extreme.
- Willy99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2i like Kinky... this isn't a dump on the guy. Kinky Rocks!
- nalf38, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0george orwell never envisioned the idea that we can fight Big Brother the same way he fights us. Thank goodness for cheap technology.
- GabrielS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's only a matter of time until politicians are followed around 24/7 by people with video cameras. These people won't be working for some campaign. They just might be freelancing by keeping an electronic eye on your representatives. The bathroom, the restaurant, the Congress: wherever that place may be, there is going to be a person following the politician around to film him or her.
A voter might ask, "Don't I have a right to know where my Senator is at all times? If he so much as drops a duke in the men's urinal, shouldn't I have the right to know?" - willcode4beer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"You have to choose the lesser of two evils"
- only if you keep voting for candidates from the same two parties.
if the choice is between 2 scumbags and a good candidate who may not win, put your vote behind the good guy. Instead of voting for the "winner" vote for the best candidate - Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I, for one, welcome our new rhinotillexomaniac overlords.
- diggeredoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1political paparazzi.
Allen may not have known the definition of the slur he was handing out in front of his laughing supporters, but he sure as hell knew it was an insult. he was obviously angered by having the opposition there filming his every move. the welcome to america statement proves he was being malicious in intent...IMHO - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Looks like ThinkBox was taking a Conrad Burns the day they discussed sarcasm (and possibly irony) in English class.
- BullTaco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0>So basically these are staffers paid by politicians to stalk their opponents?
This is special interest $$ flowing to unscrupulous actions (invasion of basic privacies).
One could surmise that an individual capable of directing such action would be capable of similarly abhorrent activity (receiving special interest $$ in exchange for legislative or judicial favor). - minder49, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3That is the way it should be mandregorax. That is the ideal form that politics should take.
Too bad we are stuck in the real world where sometimes, the best we can hope for is "not as bad as the other." It sucks, but until we realize that the longer these guys get away with their shiest, the harder it will be to get them out and change the system. - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5@ ka2err
Logic like that will turn not help this country one bit.
Go to a library and check out the book 1984, maybe you will change your tune when you see where that road goes. - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -15/+5yes, you'll be here, and we will digg you down.... all week
- pintomp3, on 10/12/2007, -25/+6i have the perfect website to post video clips of our politicians.... screwyoutube.com
i'll be here all week.
