- itsJALbert, on 10/02/2008, -24/+374Oh come on. Let's all feign horror and shock that a politician is worth money. Her husband makes $100,000 a year, (and apparently not through easy work), she also works. Building up $1 million in assets isn't too hard at that point... just shows that she actually can manage to stay out of debt personally. (Insert Wasilla deficit joke here.)
This is the sort of ***** that takes away from the very VALID points regarding how grossly unqualified she is to be our potential president. - crackah, on 10/02/2008, -6/+128lol... Who cares? Well done to them for making the money.. Wouldn't vote for her however.
- pstroll, on 10/02/2008, -11/+103Screw her for being a hard worker and making sound investment decisions!
- TycoonDreamer, on 10/02/2008, -34/+117She's not like us after all. I should've known. Bullets cost money. So do friends.
- huntress58, on 10/02/2008, -40/+91Take that all you women who claim she is just like me...
Jane six pack my ass..
Greed, avarice, Repugs no know limit...they are using Alaska
Only thing is after she loses and Alaska throws her out on her ass, nobody will want her to speak at those fat paying engagements, she can't speak or think... - jerwin, on 10/02/2008, -13/+59The people on this forum continue to amaze me at what crap is put forth as meaningful information. The woman is married, husband and wife both work and they own a home. They have owned this home for a while. Their entire net worth, most of which is equity in said home, is a whopping $1.2M. This number includes retirement accounts, savings, equity and hard assets.
This is 'greed and avarice'? Are you kidding? This is middle frigging America and the struggling 20-somethings that frequent this forum are pissed because they aren't worth '$1.2M' yet, so something must be wrong with the Palins.
God help us all if any of you actually get up from your computers and actually vote. With very little experience in 'actual reality' we are doomed if you do. - LTSVN, on 10/02/2008, -0/+38Correct me if I'm wrong but, McCain, Palin, Obama, and Biden are ALL wealthy, right? This isn't news, all politicians get rich.
- karltonDance, on 10/02/2008, -1/+37Ok, so she has a million in assets. When I think "millionaire" I envision having a million in liquid money ready to go (and/or stock investments), not that you'd have a million dollars after selling all your possessions, including your house.
- ultraseamus, on 10/02/2008, -2/+37itsJALbert, Thank you. You seem to be against the republican candidate, are a Digger, and yet you are not a raving loon, a rare breed.
- JoeParanoid, on 10/02/2008, -6/+39They're all freaking millionaires or well on their way to becoming one. You can no longer get into politics without baskets full of cash.
- Boing, on 10/02/2008, -9/+42So ***** what? She has money, good for her.
- itsJALbert, on 10/02/2008, -2/+34Sadly, the currently most dugg comment is inaccurate. Not millions, 1.2 million. In assets... like a house, which she didn't get a crappy mortgage on.
- Nairebis, on 10/02/2008, -4/+34Got news for you all -- Anyone who is half-way responsible can save up a million in assets by their mid-30s or early 40s. Most people just aren't responsible and tend to blow all their money.
But don't let that stop all of you from tearing her down for being responsible. - sinuegoist, on 10/02/2008, -11/+39She's not like us, not because she's a millionaire, but because she tells her children dinosaurs and men walked the Earth together, while sitting by the window and looking out for Russians who might walk by with no good reason.
- toptopics, on 10/02/2008, -69/+96she made a complete fool of America women.. "I am just a ordinary hockey mom?" with millions of dollars in assets i.e.
- tomzer1, on 10/02/2008, -5/+29So is Obama. Dolts.
- mnocket, on 10/02/2008, -5/+28What a jackass. Millions? RTFA
- EgyptianWarrior, on 10/02/2008, -3/+26So she has a home that was valued at half a million in 2007. Its probably worth $300k at this point and she's probably paying a mortgage for $400k. She is doing what everyone who moved to Alaska tried to do, become millionaires aka the supposed American Dream.
She just happened to be someone who got it done and that we are hearing about. That doesn't mean she won't get my vote. There are way better reasons why she won't get my vote. - dshPls, on 10/02/2008, -8/+30Being a millionaire doesn't automatically make you greedy. And being a millionaire doesn't always mean you're rich.
- knyghtryda, on 10/02/2008, -1/+21I'm reading the article and the first thing that comes to mind is that besides being reimbursed for living in her home... I don't see anything else strange or out of place. She's making a governors wage (good, but not great) her husband makes a middle class wage, she's made some good investment decisions and is reaping the benefits. Neither of them own a beer company or have 13 cars, so by that alone puts her closer to her "working class" base. Please, keep the Palin attacks on her ineptitude as a leader and a VP (utter ineptitude doesn't begin to describe it...), cuz bringing this into the picture really doesn't help anyone's cause. Shes well off, but shes definitely not "rich". A million in assets is nothing these days. A million on a paycheck however is a different story...
- Kinsbane, on 10/02/2008, -2/+22Sorry, but, while I am the furthest thing from a McPalin supporter, I honestly do not think assets and investments and income worth 1.2 million deserves the term "millionaire".
But, by the same token, I am only worth the things I own, which total probably $15,000. So, automatically, I hate her. - inactive, on 10/02/2008, -22/+41This is disgusting. Obama/Biden would never stand for this. That's why they're poorer* than her.
*richer
But Obama is really just a poor community organizer at heart, right? The part of his life counts, but when Palin was a hockey mom/whatever the ***** is erased when she makes some money. Interesting double standard. - RonBurgundy76, on 10/02/2008, -2/+20You are a ***** idiot. 260,000/yr is 5 times (or more) what most people make.
- tdog138, on 10/02/2008, -2/+19A lot of people have a million + in assets. That is what the original poster was getting at. A lot of really old backwater farmers across the midwest have over a million in assets. So I don't see how Sarah Palin is being deceptive by coming across as someone who is not an intellectual, which is apparently what you are suggesting she is. I don't see how having a million in assets means you can't enjoy hockey and a six-pack, those things are not mutually exclusive.
Original Poster is right, these kinds of stories do not have any real substance to them, and just distracts from her real problems, she is an idiot, and has extreme views. - fleischner, on 10/02/2008, -11/+28Jesus H. Christ. I'm waiting for the article from you people accusing her of breathing air and eating food. Your candidate cavorts with America-hating racists and terrorists, and these are the kind of things you have to come back with?
- PhildoVT, on 10/02/2008, -1/+17NEXT PERSON WHO SAYS "JOE SIXPACK" IS GOING TO GET PUNCHED IN THE FACE
- inactive, on 10/02/2008, -2/+17Not to defend her, but total assets of $1.2 million isn't that big of a deal these days. Those are assets...ALL assets...not just a pile of cash sitting in the bank, or yearly income.
Still hate the woman. - Echota, on 01/05/2009, -6/+20Please,give it up! I know a couple of "hockey mom's" and neither make 260,000 a year.
Palin is a dupe and a heck of a long way from being "like one of us." - bjs3171, on 10/02/2008, -1/+15what, you think the democrats ride their ***** bicycles around the country to campaign? of course they have ***** jets.
- kcornwell, on 10/02/2008, -7/+20$1.2 million? Assets? What about liabilities?
In this day and age, that's *****. - j0hnc0ry, on 10/02/2008, -3/+16Come the ***** on. I don't like her either, but she's worth barely over $1 million. Some of you guys are acting like she's freakin Donald Trump. It's not hard now and days to have over $1 million in assets.
- artfuldodger1, on 10/02/2008, -3/+15I say we should only let people that are in 20k of credit card debt run this country... Then they will know the problems we are going through and they can be just like the average American!
Some of you guys are idiots....
Why would you feel better if someone that pulls in probably 150k at least a year has no money in the bank...
And why can't someone with a million dollars still be average? You know there are humble people with millions of dollars these days, millionaire next door, and they can still survive with everyone else. Not everyone of them has private jets, Ferrari's, and go carts.
- I do not support Palin and Mccain, but I think 90% people on Digg have turned into morons in the past few months and just regurgitate nonsense about people they are suppose to hate and it's getting annoying.
Have a good afternoon. - inactive, on 10/02/2008, -6/+18Wait Obama owns a house worth more then all her families assets and yet she is the greedy snobby one?
- Calinthalus, on 10/02/2008, -2/+14less than 30k a year? For a family? Joe Sixpack can't afford his beer on that kind of pay. I make more than that by myself, that doesn't even count my wife's paycheck. We have trouble making ends meet, and we make more than twice 30k a year.
- dshPls, on 10/02/2008, -0/+11And 70% of the world hasn't heard a dial tone. To the third world every US citizen is rich, it's relative to where you live.
"the estimated value of their property and investments and they appear to be worth at least $1.2 million."
And the Palin's house is included in this figure, so you're first point doesn't matter either.
"Sarah Palin's salary as governor was $125,000; Todd Palin took in $46,790 as a part-time oil production operator for BP Alaska in Prudhoe Bay, plus $46,265 in commercial fishing income and $10,500 in Iron Dog snowmachine race winnings."
Do these people sound rich to you? When people hear millionaire they immediately think that the person in question is making a million dollars a year... If you save your cash and invest wisely I'd bet you'll be a millionaire when you retire, if you try hard enough. - jjmelch, on 10/02/2008, -3/+14Read the article. Here we have a couple that both work and earn thier money. The money she has is upper-middle class money. A far cry from most other politicians, Republican and democrats alike, Most of them at that level are RICH, VERY RICH.
- jjmelch, on 10/02/2008, -18/+28If you read the article, you will find she isn't all that rich. The Palins are upper-middle class rich. Both of them have jobs.
- Cuchanu, on 10/02/2008, -1/+11She was never like me. I don't get this whole ***** thing about her being a 'normal American'. I don't hunt. I don't go to beauty pageants. I believe in evolution and man's role in global warming. Does that mean I am an 'abnormal American'?
I think it's just another example of the Republicans trying to win an election by taking advantage of Americans' stupidity. The issues? ***** 'em. - gospe1337, on 10/02/2008, -1/+11Wait, it takes money to be a politician? Tell more more, Digg!
- bysubmitted, on 10/02/2008, -0/+10Dugg for the Alaskan realtor named "Salmon."
- inactive, on 10/02/2008, -6/+16learn to read
- DreKor, on 10/02/2008, -0/+101.2M in assets? There are a lot of people with those kind of "assets". If you have a house on either coast, you're probably pretty close to that but still middle class for the area. I'm one of those "liberal moon bats" everybody's always bitching about, and even I find this to be grossly misleading.
- whorunbartertwn, on 10/02/2008, -4/+13>I didn't realize there were degrees of wealth.<
Why is probably why you'll never be wealthy.
1.2 million is a solid net worth for a couple at their age but it's hardly spectacular and you'd probably find that most in this range live in the suburbs with kids attending the same school as yours.
It's hardly an uber wealthy jet-setting type of wealth. - Buddhaismybuddy, on 10/02/2008, -0/+9I disagree that your title is better.
- Griberal, on 10/02/2008, -2/+11Plus, Obama made all of his money during the Bush years, which are supposed to be the worse 8 years in the history of the world. When he asks voters the question "Are you better off now than you were 8 years ago?", I always hope that someone will tell him, "Well you are."
- dshPls, on 10/02/2008, -3/+12It's the knee-jerk uneducated comments that seem to often get the most thumbs. This is what I consider the Huffpo phenomena. When a user of this site Diggs something because they want it to be true in order to hurt someone's image, usually a republican. It's no necessarily true or unbiased, but it fits the reality of the user regardless of the details which they never seem to read.
- bowens44, on 10/02/2008, -1/+10if you think that a quarter million a year is middle class you're insane.
- Praelior, on 10/02/2008, -0/+9I agree, I assume "millionaire" is 1 million in the bank/stocks/funds. I'm sure there is a decent amount of people that between their 401k, house, cars and belongings are worth a million.
- inactive, on 10/02/2008, -1/+10Median household income in the US: $48,000 / year.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Median_household_inco ... - vitaminz1990, on 10/02/2008, -3/+11Some of you diggers are really pathetic. Just because she's a smart woman who doesn't spend all her money and go into debt (unlike a lot of America), makes her a lying bitch? No. She works hard and makes good financial decisions, along with her husband. Get over it and post stories that actually have some good information. No more of this ***** that most of you guys get butt hurt over. Oh and Obama/Biden aren't wealthier than she is either huhh?
