Pirate leader: "Our enemy lacks intellectual capital!"
p2pconsortium.com — The battle over legal filesharing is hotter than ever in Sweden - 13 MPs from the main ruling party have already joined the copyright rebels in Europe's leading pirate country. "The copyright lobby realized they were under serious attack and mounted every piece of defense they could muster", tells Rick Falkvinge, the leader of the Pirate Party.

- ethana2, on 01/14/2008, -4/+3A few things. First, the Bible is basically under a CC-BY, assuming derivatives are properly notated. As a Christian, I believe copyrighting work is unethical. While I don't condone or practice piracy, I spread Ubuntu everywhere I can, and most of my music comes from jamendo.com. 'Freely you have received, freely give.'
Also-- I have a hard time recognizing black people. They're not any less important than us Caucasians or anything, but I just don't know very many of them- so I do have some trouble like that. Am I racist? I don't think so; I try not to be. One soul has the same infinite value that another does, you know, all men being created equal and all...
And some people would knock me for some of the things I believe, but that's outside of the scope of this article so I'd appreciate it being left out of the rating for my comment here. ~Fin- p3ngwin, on 01/14/2008, -1/+2everyone is NOT created equal, that belief is the start of problems right there.
- JQP123, on 01/14/2008, -0/+3According to the Bible, God did not create everyone *equal*, the Jews were his chosen people. Also, slavery is deeply rooted in Judeo-Christian tradition and is ordained by God. According to the Old Testament, God told the Jews to enslave the other peoples around them (Leviticus 25:44). And contrary to what many Christians seem to think, this tradition does continue into the New Testament.
GNT Ephesians 6:5 - "Slaves, obey your human masters, with fear and trembling; and do it with a sincere heart, as though you were serving Christ." Also see 1 Peter 2:18.
The US fought a very bloody war over this religious crap. If you're going to espouse belief in something, I recommend that you take the time to actually understand what it is that you are believing in. Don't just take mommy and daddy's word for it.

- id10tjoeuser, on 01/14/2008, -1/+1I'm a Christian and I see nothing wrong with slavery in general. Some people are not capable of taking care of themselves. Poor souls live in squaller their whole lives, and I wish I could do something about it. Unfortunately, their freedom condemns them to this life, and my heart goes out to them.
- JQP123, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1I'll bet you don't even realize that your comment just validated the common negative Christian stereotype?
- cgm1985, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1@id10tjoeuser: Do you realize how paternalistic that statement is? So someone who looks at you (an alien or super rich guy for example) and perceives you to be living in squalor, they are justified in forcing slavery on you? Personally, I find that attitude disgusting.
- id10tjoeuser, on 01/14/2008, -1/+1I'm a Christian and I see nothing wrong with slavery in general. Some people are not capable of taking care of themselves. - JQP123, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2If Christians are not slave owners, it is not because of their Bible.
Fortunately, most governments do not rely on the Bible as a model of justice, fairness or basic human rights. The idea that "all men are created equal" contradicts much of what is found in the Bible. - anononon, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1"God did not create everyone *equal*, the Jews were his chosen people"
Guess who wrote the bible.- JQP123, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2If you were creating a religion, could you resist the urge to make yourself special? Most peoples haven't been able to.
The Bible contains plenty of evidence to support an overall lack of divine inspiration. This is just one example.

- Amric, on 01/14/2008, -0/+7Nope, 100/100 is not remarkable 100/10 is pretty common, 10/10 actually less common than 100/10, 24/1 ADSL is what is most common however.
A couple of years ago I was called liar by some american people when I said I had a 10/10 connection and was paying 32€ a month for it. It was either that or I was seriously mistaken and I had like 1/1 or 100kb/100kb. Then when I recieved the upgrade to 100/10 (same price as before) it was the same thing all over again.
I'm not sure about this, but I think they are trying out 1000/1000 lines in some cities right now... Soon you will need faster harddrives just to keep the flow going :p
- iamaelephant, on 01/14/2008, -10/+6What a guy. I dream of a world where musicians, authors, poets, photographers, painters, graphic artists and software developers don't get paid. I mean, what a bunch of stuck up wankers, wanting to get paid for their work. Clearly they are all just corporate shills working for the man.
- p3ngwin, on 01/14/2008, -2/+3if we get rid of the stupid idea of money and just share what we have, what have access to, and cooperate then there is no need to "pay" for anything.
if you want to share then good, if not then fine don't. those that share most will have access to most.
as soon as you buy into the idea of "owning" anything, you will start having problems with evolution.
if you learned to fend for yourself and ally yourself with like-minded people you wouldn't need to use money to give to other poeple for services you could tend to yourself:
Diogenes was knee deep in a stream washing vegetables. Coming up to him, Plato said, "My good Diogenes, if you knew how to pay court to kings, you wouldn't have to wash vegetables."
"And," replied Diogenes, "If you knew how to wash vegetables, you wouldn't have to pay court to kings."
so if artists want recognition, then they should embrace sharing methods. if they want money they should ask themselves what they want the money for and instead realise there are better ways to get those things. once you have food and shelter, the rest is the luxury of a comfortable means to evolve.- iamaelephant, on 01/14/2008, -1/+2So you're suggesting we eliminate this troublesome capitalism thing and just go with the communism idea. Sweet. I'm sure you've read up on the history of communism so you can assure us all that the system works perfectly, right?
By the way, have you actually ever read Plato? It was Socrates who spoke to Diogenes. You know, the same Socrates upon whose ideas many of the tenets of the modern democratic republic are based.- Tetraca, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1Republic means nothing in this situation other than what means there is to change the economy. Adam Smith and his book describing the workings of a free market, with consumer soveriegnty, private ownership of resources, and the like, is what would really affect the idea of piracy.
- bluesnowmonkey, on 01/14/2008, -0/+3Dude, I hate to be the one to have to tell you, but Star Trek will never happen. There will never be a peaceful utopian money-free society where there are no poor, politicians are honest, and everyone works for the greater good.

- RaDeus, on 01/14/2008, -1/+2why do executives and artists need multi-million dollar wages ? if they lowered their wages and made the media cheaper it would compete with piracy more and we wouldn't be having this discussion...
this is all about greed... the industry wants their money nomather what, why be flexible when you make more money as it is... - Meatgrinder, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1Don't get paid? Not every artist is bound to ***** out money for greedy corporations.
Why should they even bother making thrilling movies, taking beautiful photos or producing your favorite songs, if they don't get the money to do it?- yetAnotherCroc, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1If you really want to know what the Piracy issue is about then watch this:

- Charbax, on 01/14/2008, -0/+4I think big music and movie studios are the pirates that want to steal our culture.
- goldendragon2, on 01/14/2008, -0/+3Dugg for: "Rick Falkvinge: The people who have been led to believe that file sharing can be stopped with minimal intrusion are basically smoking crack."
- teamtomato, on 01/14/2008, -2/+1I'm not sure why more people don't call the Pirate Bay out on their ridiculous moralizing; the technology came first, the technology makes file sharing possible, and people engage in it. The Robin Hood posturing comes second, as justification for the theft that is taking place. There's an implicit acknowledgment that file sharing is in fact theft in the name of the company (organization? clubhouse?), and it's left to the supporters to justify it by excoriating corporate greed.
I think these people need to think about who is being greedy, when they're amassing tens of thousands of free, stolen media files to - what? Watch? Listen to? Most likely bitch about to their other Internet "pirate" buddies? It's like a vast network of Simpsons Comic Book Guys, whose obesity is a metaphor for the sense of entitlement that is so clumsily veiled as outrage over "corporate greed".
So the music industry is wrecked, for better or worse, with the television and film industry possibly to follow. Fine. But how much has music or film itself been devalued by the advent of file-sharing? When you can download or copy whole discographies in a matter of minutes, for free, as opposed to building a collection gradually, you not only haven't spent any $$$, you haven't spent, or invested, any emotional (or intellectual) capital. You got it easily, and for free, which, believe me, is NOT how these things were produced. There is no honor in that whatsoever - just a hard drive crammed with files. So who's being heroic, and who's being greedy? - joeanon, on 01/14/2008, -3/+1In the end, there is little realistic argument why stealing copyrighted music should be legal.
Of course, there is also little reason alcohol should be legal yet it remains so.
You have to face the reality that stealing destroys the market you steal from.
Stealing PC games for instance means as a game maker I'd put more faith in the consoles.
Stealing PC apps means as a developer I will take more shortcuts and less time on my apps, which I know you'll steal.
It also means time invested in pointless authenticity schemes.
There must be a happier medium to find than stealing everything you can vs the tight control of all media.
Piracy has effectively made movies and songs fairly cheap, but what media providers need to do is create media that simply doesn't play on the PC. That would make ripping much harder.
For apps, well the future is subscription for sure. AND, you can thank piracy for that.
Once you push all the apps into subscription based sales models.. where will we be then ?
The Pirate party is a joke. Stealing cannot be made legal without harming the industries. Internet piracy was all good BEFORE Kazaa and other mainstream p2p clients.
That is what single handedly brought about the media and legal ***** storm.
The fact is every 12 year old boy doesn't need to know how to download movies, music, porn, games and whatever else they can find.
Letting the mainstream into piracy only SEEMS like a good idea, but too much of a good thing will eventually cause action to be taken. It's simply not that hard to cut off P2P at the ISP level. It's not hard to move to subscription based apps. It's not hard to say, hey the PC platform is making us money, lets move to console and mobile development.
For what ? So you can have massive media collections that you only use 20% of or apps and games that you don't have time to test or play since you're too busy obsessively downloading illegal content.
Bad idea...Piracy party = making piracy more mainstream = BAD IDEA
The fact is the governments of the world and corporations will win this fight, it's their content, it's their communication network and we are abusing it. They are allowing a free internet for now, but with the certain future of tighter and tighter regulation.
And in many cases for good reason. There is no reason to have an anonymous communication medium in todays world. There is no reason to allow billions of dollars in software and media theft. As more and more people get on they have more incentive to filter p2p out of the picture, increase crimes and change their business models to ones less convenient to us but more resistant to piracy.
The people aren't always right. Give the people opium, they become opium addicts. That doesn't mean opium is good. It means the people have no ability to self govern as individuals they merely seek opportunistic existence while degrading society. Hence... we have laws.
Sorry to say, but you can't create a political movement for something that's morally and fiscally wrong.
Why not just start a party who's goal is to rob wealthy people. I mean, to you it's just a movie, but to the actors, directors and everyone else who worked on that for months, it's a job, it's the financial well being.
Instead of stealing music and then trying to make up reasons why it's right, we should just raise taxes on the wealthy.
I mean, if you think piracy is right, get down the to heart of it. Chances are you don't actually think stealing is right. You think the wealthy corporations making the apps and media won't miss that profit.
That means it's not a point of theft, it's a point of you not having the quality of life you want. You want more entertainment so you steal music, movies and games. But unless the world is going to switch over to full blow socialism, stealing a companies products eventually does hurt their profit margin.
At some point when more and more people get on the internet and get PC's you can't keep saying OH well these are all customers who wouldn't have bought the product anyway... yea right. Well if I STOLE all my food I wouldn't go the food store and I don't think the rational is much different for any other product when you get down to it.
People need art and culture so stealing music is ok? RIGHT... Well they need food and shelter more, but stealing those life saving necessities is not legal.
Your gripe is not that stealing should be legal. It's that the wealthy have too much money and you have too little so to get what you want (or think you want) you steal.
You need a political solution, but not one centered around piracy. It's a sensationalist movement at best and pretty much has no rational to stand on.
I don't own intellectual property, but I can still see piracy will harm important markets and create an even more disposable society. I mean, when the majority of art has no value where does you culture go from there ?
When you take money from atrists does that not reduce the amount of art in your culture ?
Isn't reducing the amount of art in your culture, not a very intellectual thing to do ?
Is the trade off worth it? We'll create artist elitism and destroy artists diversity at the same time with that strategy. We'll expose more people to art and culture, but make it less profitable and therefore less possible as a career choice.
Seems to me the lack of diversity will cause a few artists to become very rich while new artists suffer and music and video quality suffers.
By attacking their profits, we essential put profit as the focus even more than ever. They need what we've taken away and we need the proliferation of art, but how do you proliferate art in a market who's ever growing piracy trend eats up your profits ?
The reason you won't find a solution, is that there is none, you can't steal from artists and not harm your culture. Unless you can make piracy profitable to the artists then piracy or art will be limited and eventually both.
Do you ever watch movies thinking about just how bad they are, how there are no new ideas. Yea.. then you queue up another one right. Well the instance of piracy of a bad movie may not bring the world to it's knees, but the mindset that it's just art lets steal it, isn't just wrong, but more importantly it harms the intellect of our culture.
It's also breeding a greater diversity of one hit wonders since customers have less band loyalty AND they are buying vastly more singles than albums.
It's not a good thing people.
You can't pirate music on one hand then complain about the falling quality of movies, music and culture. We are breeding artists OUT of the culture and breeding one hit wonder entertainers in as replacements to the real musicians and artists.
Just look at the state of music and movies today. They suck, they are mostly pointless copies off each other. There are NO major bands out reshaping music right now. There is no new sounds changing the way people think or listen to music.
We are facing cultural stagnation, for many reasons, and one is that people cannot see that certain behavioral patterns are unsustainable. Piracy is one of those unsustainable behavioral patterns. In small quantities it's fine, but when mainstream replaces going to the record store with going to P2P you've got a HUGE problem and the quality of those markets facing major piracy MUST go down on average.
You have to realize not all effects are measurable in dollars. By taking money from artists you affect the emotional state of your culture.
Every couple decades a great musician is supposed to re-shape the music scene and even sometimes bring great messages along with them. Where are they ? Mass media and piracy has funneled entertainment into a smaller, easier to control model where more people buy the same things. That works great for mass production, but I don't want mass produced art. I want local artists to be able to SELL their CD to people who go out looking to BUY music not just get the bands name so they can steal it later.
The average musician now has to be more connected than ever to sell themselves and that really just means they have to sell out more to get a chance to get their music heard. We are moving toward a system where musicians will be wearing corporate advertising since no one will actually pay for music.
It's the google business model, everything is free via advertising. Somehow I can't see Jimi Hendrix wearing an Exxon Mobile shirt.
How, MR intellectual are artists supposed to make money in a world ever obsessed with piracy being perfectly OK.
Well, most people aren't artists that's for sure.
I mean, if you think it's bad now, just imagine when the other 80% of the world gets on the internet. What most of you don't realize is that while the record companies aren't actually losing money, they are re-shaping the music industry and we are losing artists to piracy. It's not the record industry or the existing wealthy artists who suffers.
It's the struggling artists trying to show you dumb asses a new sound, but you're too busy arranging your illegal music collection.
The idea that piracy can be allow to run wild is ridiculous, I mean sure it will work, but you have to be a COMPLETE FOOL to think that you can steal without eventually destroying the industry you steal from.- yetAnotherCroc, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1You make a lot of assumptions and fail to see alternative perspectives, or even the opposite side of the issue. Why is media stagnant? Because the powers that be have figured out that a poorly directed mix of common elements is all it takes to keep the money rolling in. You cant lay that at the feet of pirates. By not rising above the common they can keep us coming back for the same overpriced crap over and over. Why do you think reality TV was such a success? Because of its astounding quality? No! It was a success because it contained all the needed plot elements and it pandered to our obscene fascination with other peoples private life.
They have realized that money is better spent on marketing then on actual artist development and that by spending more on quality they might not necessarily raise revenue (since the major products have almost universal saturation anyway) so it would just be lost profits for them. They have also successfully perpetuated the myth of "making it big" and "becoming a celebrity" to the point where you get more people lining up to an audition for American Idol then thinking of getting actual jobs. This helps them keep down royalties to newer artists and gives them the power to shape that artist as they please.
Do not be misstaken. The Big Media is playing a very cynical game with us and we are more then happy to throw aour money at them. Is it any wonder that people resort to stealing the content once their money wont cover the addiction any more.
NOTE: I do not steal music etc myself and I have gone over to using only Open Source software in order to not steal from anyone. - yetAnotherCroc, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2Also, my right to download the Transformers Movie is NOT the issue the pirate party discusses.
