- tuna1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11"N Korea isn't even a threat....not with the technology we have..."
I don't think the South Koreans don't feel that way. - ldhertert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The difference is that these missiles are, AFAIK, purely defensive. The problem with the Cuba situation is we were both flexing our muscles (offensive), which can quickly accelerate into action. This is not a direct threat to Korea, therefore there should be no reason that it should encourage conflict.
- rderveloy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Cool story, but I thought patriot missiles were ineffective at intercepting ballistic missiles.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that this was one of the reasons why we dumped trillions of dollars into a missile defense system. - Rosco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5North Korea has hundreds of artillery batteries pointed directly at Seoul. And unlike missiles, there is absolutely no way you can knock down an artillery shell on its way to destination. It's been like that for decades. NK can almost wipe out Seoul within an hour or two with the amount of artillery it has aimed in that direction. You can certainly guarantee that the good people of South Korea do not share such a cavalier attitude.
- searayman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4this is a pretty good idea, pretty soon North Korea will be in a "missile" lock down, they wont be able to get there missile anywhere
- fermi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Obviously, YOU were the one not paying attention in history class. History is full of nutty little dictators like Kim Jong-Il who will use whatever leverage they have to affect international policy or threaten their neighbors. Will N. Korea nuke anyone? Probably not, but they could sell the technology to a group or nation that would...like Iran.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The South Koreans and the Japanese don't share the same Cavalier attitude.
- livesunkept, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6This is most likely in direct response to N. Korea and the 3 stage ballistic missile that they have developed.
- jmc730, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3According to a report (sorry I don't remember where i saw it) seven out of the last eight tests the patriot missiles have successfully intercepted their targets.
- Apreche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, patriot missiles are pretty innefective. The reason we were able to stop so many SCUD missiles in the gulf war was because of the sheer quantity of patriot missiles. If NK fires one missiles and we fire one patriot to stop it, the odds of them hitting is almost nil. But if we fire 10, 20 or even more patriot missiles you can get a pretty good defense. This is why missiles are so dangerous. You pretty much can't defend against them.
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Welcome back to 1950, where the "evil commies" will just randomly nuke us for no apparent reason. Even a crazy little dictator with funny hair has common sense. How would it benefit north Korea to nuke California or Hawaii or wherever? They might take out one city or 2, or whatever, but we could take out their entire country. Make the whole damn thing into a smoking hole in the ground. How is it in North Korea's best interest for their country to not exist and for all their people to be dead? Nuclear war has been impossibly impractical for over 50 years. Ever hear of a phrase called mutually assured destruction? North Korea isn't even at that point. They could not destroy our whole country even if they wanted to, but if they attacked us they know that we could and would destroy their country. By launching nuclear weapons at us they would be signing their own death warrant. Didn't you people pay attention in history class when you were in high school? No country is going to nuke any other country.
- joelito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You all don't get it, do you?
They want to be ready for when Godzilla returns since Mothra and the other monsters where destroyed. - Cl1mh4224rd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4tuna1 wrote: "I don't think the South Koreans don't feel that way."
Sooo... You think S.Koreans agree with TubaTechno? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If the NK do anything to the Missles to change their trajectory, like add or subtract weight then Patriots are almost useless. It happened with Scuds in the first Gulf War. The Iraqis added range to the missles by taking out weight. The Patriot Missles couldn't get the new missles with odd wobbly path.
- jackmarlin, on 08/09/2009, -0/+1Well hopefully these missiles are good enough.
http://www.conversekids.net/ - deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Based on what data? I doubt any civilian has the data to back up this assertion.
- deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Then it must be tre.
.gov would never lie to us. - mrhaines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The U.S. still has bases in japan? They haven'y been kicked out yet?
- rderveloy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I doubt Kim Jong-Il is actually thinking of attacking, I think he just wants attention. Think of him as a big baby who is thowing a temper tantrum because the focus has been on Iran.
Either that, or he just want's a deterrant against invasion. Think about it, the only way to stop a super power in its tracks and keep it from invading a country is for the other country to have nukes. MAD at its finest. - SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Remind me, maybe I DIDN'T pay attention in history. How many of these so called "nutty little dictators" have nuked us so far? They are all talk. But you're too scared to notice that, arent you. Worried that the guy with the funny hair will nuke you, and the guy with the funny hat will suicide bomb you, and that bird flying past will give your whole family bird flu. Stop being a coward and think.
- Metman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You need to wake up and (agree > fermi) re-read your history. As for common sense, of all the world leaders this man and our fearless leader probably have the least of it.
Personally, I fear N Korea more then any Middle Eastern country. Kim Jong-Il has a proven track record of making outlandish political and militarial moves simply to expand his personality cult. He has made numerous about dieing imfamous if he cant die famous and comments along those lines. This is also the same man who said "...like the good old days of the cold war..." refering to the tension between communism and capitalism (saying the tension inspired innovation - which is true). - mitrebox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wikipedia has a pretty good article about the wepon system history and the errors in the earlier versions of PATRIOT and upgrades since, and the difference between missile accuracy (kills per missle fired) and the kill ratio(number of enemy missiles intercepeted vs number reaching target). It remains the only combat proven missile defense system and with software only upgrades older PAC 1/2 missiles have been tested to intercept MLRS attacks.
- redrob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Surely the point is more that if N. Korea pose a credible threat to even one US city (and to a lesser extent other friendly western nations) they then have a much stronger negotiating position in the future. They may be dubbed a member of the "axis of evil" but they become a member that Bush et al would have to think twice about invading.
- vonRyan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No, all the Axis countries from WWII still have U.S. bases in their territory.
Actually, I don't know about Italy, but if Germany and Japan still do, I think there are high chances Italy does as well. - bike4ever, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I am not afaid of the person who wants a hundred nuclear bombs, just the person who only wants one.
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"NO sex, no drugs, no wine, no women... put a missle here and you be sinin"
-Turning Japanese - mrhaines, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The U.S. still has bases in japan? I didn't realize Japan had large oil reserves.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0“All nine enemy tactical ballistic missiles that threatened areas designated for Patriot defense were engaged. Eight of these engagements were observed by enough other sensors to conservatively declare them successes; the ninth engagement is judged to be a probable success. None of the attacking tactical ballistic missiles caused any damage or loss of life to the coalition forces. “

Missle == phallus - Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Idk about the technical similarities, but this has shades of the cuban missile crisis.
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Yeah, be afraid, be very afraid... OF NORTH KOREA!
- TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2N Korea isn't even a threat....not with the technology we have...
- karskill, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4This is over-hyped drivel - White House scare tactics at it's best....be afraid..be very afraid
