- inactive, on 08/30/2008, -13/+70"Palin Repeatedly Professed Desire To Renew Federal Funding For ‘Bridge To Nowhere’" Repeatedly. So basically, her first speech had a whopper of a lie in it. Wonder if she spoke with Cheney before coming on stage.
- dupswapdrop, on 08/31/2008, -11/+58Sounds more like the running mate to nowhere!
- johnnr2, on 08/30/2008, -11/+49She was for it before she as against it. ut oh.
- sapphire9488, on 08/31/2008, -19/+54The more I learn about Sarah Palin, the more excited I get! Isn't this a great time to be a Democrat?
- sardiax, on 08/31/2008, -7/+36http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravina_Island_Bridge
Governor Sarah Palin also supported the bridge, but canceled it when the Alaska delegation was unable to prevent changes to federal funding levels that more than doubled Alaska's portion of the bill from $160M(40.2%) to $329M (>82%) of the bridge's cost.
...
The project was canceled on September 21, 2007 by Alaska governor Sarah Palin because the federal government would not pay for all of it.
That provides a little more information than - she was for it and then she was against it. Wikipedia is your friend, people. - Izikoo, on 08/31/2008, -3/+23So she was for it when everyone else had to pay for it, but against it when her own state would have to pay. I would say that highlights very clearly the usefulness of this bridge, and her willingness to waste public finds.
- cadmiumpaint, on 08/31/2008, -3/+23"[A]s for that V.P. talk all the time, I'll tell you, I still can't answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the V.P. does every day?"
-Sarah Palin one month ago. - ebolaworld, on 08/31/2008, -8/+25She is going to be a huge disaster. I bet she doesn't make it to the elections.
- DFutureIsNow, on 08/31/2008, -14/+29She couldn't wait to start lying, typical Alaskan republican, corrupt to the bone.
- amoirae, on 08/31/2008, -6/+17She's creeping corruption.
- deleo, on 08/31/2008, -2/+13I think the moderator of the VP debate has to ask Sarah a very direct question about this. Where's Tim Russert when you need him?
- Reynardine, on 08/31/2008, -3/+13Wikipedia's information makes Sarah Palin out to be *worse* than the HuffPost title.
She was all for a ridiculously expensive and useless pet project as long as Alaska didn't have to pay for it. - HappyScrappy, on 08/31/2008, -0/+9It can go to infrastructure without earmarks. Earmarks are pork barrel *****.
If Alaska wants to take some of the money they get from the feds and spend it on a bridge, great. But to take additional money for a bridge it a different matter. - Bulks, on 08/31/2008, -0/+8Please, let's not start the hyperbole all over again. It got really old in 2004 and, my god, no one actually emigrated after Bush was reelected.
- santaliqueur, on 08/31/2008, -1/+8"Typical Alaskan Republican"? You make it sound like there are tons of them all over the news.
- DeFex, on 08/31/2008, -3/+10Anyone thinking of that cool talking heads song "were on a road to nowhere" quite suitable for US if McBrain wins.
- HappyScrappy, on 08/31/2008, -6/+12It's pretty clear to me she only rejected the earmark based upon practical considerations. That the earmark only represented 20% of the cost, that Alaska couldn't afford to pay the other 80% and that with all the hullablaloo in the press, there would not be further earmarks to take up the slack in funding coming from the Federal level.
So, she rejected the earmark, knowing that if they took it, they'd just end up returning the money after a while when they couldn't find the rest of the money to complete the project before the funding expired. They wouldn't end up with a bridge either way.
Better to just find another way you can afford.
All this is great, it's wise. But it doesn't show some kind of rejection of the bridge to nowhere on principles, only a realization there was no way they were going to get the bridge under the circumstances. - BradHAWK, on 08/31/2008, -0/+5I dunno. Huge disaster VPs seem to have worked quite well for Republicans.
- aftern9ne, on 08/31/2008, -3/+8This whole earmark debate is *****. The bridge to nowhere was an extreme example, but I'd much rather have federal money going to building infrastructure than to blowing up the middle east.
- Barackalypse, on 08/31/2008, -3/+7I don't know, your 110th Democraticly controlled Congress has a lower approval rating than even Bush. Thats like losing a popularity contest to Hitler at a Bar Mitzvahs. http://www.gallup.com/poll/107242/congress-approva ...
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?story ... - NorthMass, on 08/31/2008, -0/+4If Moore was a Republican, this site would give him no mercy, so I am justified in my yelling.
- NorthMass, on 08/31/2008, -1/+5I see how it works now on Digg. Once you make 100% valid points against the Democrats who will do whatever Keith-O tells them to do, they digg you down. They won't ever comment on why they digg you down because they know your right, so they digg you down to make you look stupid but refuse to comment because they know they would look stupid trying to refute the criticisms made against them. Oh ya, Keith-O is just as bad as Bill-O, at least Bill-O has the guts to debate someone he disagrees, even though all he does is yell at them. Keith-O refuses to even have someone who disagrees with him on the show!
- wondertwins, on 08/31/2008, -8/+11Please America, do not vote for these two empty headed, no experienced, selfish bastards. If you guys do, im movin up north to Canada
- Beefsupreme88, on 08/31/2008, -1/+4They should try building a bridge to 8 years ago, I'm all for funding that.
- dball48, on 08/31/2008, -11/+14Who needs facts when you've got thinkprogress, huffington post, and dailykos doing all your thinking for you
- turbodiesel, on 08/31/2008, -0/+3you're not really using Wikipedia as a reference?
for politics?
in 2008? - eryximachus, on 08/31/2008, -0/+3Every time I hear this I think of what Brooklyn would be like today if modern, short sighted ideology were around then. when the Williamsburg Bridge was built, Williamsburg was a small neighborhood of Brooklyn. It quadrupled in population in not even a decade after the bridge was built. Few people commuted from Brooklyn to Manhattan until the Brooklyn Bridge was built. So many people made the commute - turning Brooklyn into the nation's first suburb - that they had to build ANOTHER bridge 27 years later.
Most diggers are from suburban locations and don't really understand how bridges can literally change places. - slickwatson, on 08/31/2008, -0/+3oh SNAP...
P================ .... wait for it ...... D - akhomestead, on 08/31/2008, -2/+5I don't know, they've done NOTHING to stop the Bush administration except rubber stamp his proposals while talking tough on TV. If we had more Democrats like Dennis Kucinich or more Republicans like Ron Paul it would be a great time to be and AMERICAN.
- Photokon, on 08/31/2008, -4/+7Hey! There are no room for facts here!
- GaryChalmers, on 08/31/2008, -1/+4Palin was for it when her state didn't have to pay for it. She only turned against it when your federal tax dollars wouldn't pay for every cent:
Wikipedia: "The project was canceled on September 21, 2007 by Alaska governor Sarah Palin because the federal government would not pay for all of it" - NorthMass, on 08/31/2008, -2/+5Photokon, remember that any comment criticizing Obama will receive a mandatory 5 diggs down, whether or not your comment was factual. And if you dare stand up for McCain, this is another mandatory 5 diggs down. And I am not a McCain supporter at all, I am just hear to warn you that you will be -10 diggs down in no time =).
- brian223, on 08/31/2008, -4/+7OK, now I have read this story numerous times, including in the NY Times and in the Anchorage Daily News. Palin says is asked..
5. Would you continue state funding for the proposed Knik Arm and Gravina Island bridges?
Yes. I would like to see Alaska’s infrastructure projects built sooner rather than later. The window is now - while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist.
Then she stands up in front of the nation and FLAT OUT LIES to the entire country...WTF is she thinking?? She thinking no one is gonna research her past record? This bitch just committed political suicide. The Dems are gonna jump all over this one...she's just proven herself to be completely untrustworthy. She's Finished. - NorthMass, on 08/31/2008, -2/+5Congratulations Reynardine, you just reinforced the stupid Digg sterotype that Digg Democrats always use. Against Obama = warmongering neocon looking to follow Osama Bin Laden to the gates of hell. Forget that libertarians exist, or Republicans who won't vote for McCain and may just vote Barr, or that some liberals actually like true liberals like Nader or Mckinney. None of that matters, because in your book a vote for anyone besides Obama = a vote for McCain = neocon warmongerer.
- diggdatt, on 08/31/2008, -0/+3FlipFlops never matter when the republicans do it :/
- geoffg, on 08/31/2008, -0/+2Agreed, ultimately it's actually kind of scary.
- bonshepherd, on 08/31/2008, -0/+2You forget the entire election is based on useless political catch-phrases.
- Photokon, on 08/31/2008, -3/+5I was thinking the exact same thing Izikoo
- NorthMass, on 08/31/2008, -1/+3Wow, kemp34 simply said that our country would be better off if we had Nader, Mckinney, Barr, and Baldwin as our main choices instead of Obama and Mccain and he is dugg down. SOMEONE CARE TO EXPLAIN THIS TO ME? ALL FOUR OF THOSE CANDIDATES WANT TO GET US OUT OF IRAQ, AND THE WAR ALL OF YOU CLAIM TO HATE, YET YOU DIGG DOWN A MAN WHO SAYS WE WOULD BE IN BETTER SHAPE IF ALL OUR CANDIDATES WERE AGAINST THE IRAQ WAR?
- justintsmith, on 08/31/2008, -2/+4chill out buddy
- sneaker98, on 08/31/2008, -8/+10Can we stop calling it a frickin' bridge to nowhere? It services an airport which has about 200,000 passengers a year.
Granted, the budget was overkill, but it's not like this bridge goes *nowhere* just because there isn't a town on the island!
Dugg down for useless political catch-phrases. - cwright213, on 08/31/2008, -0/+2EXACTLY! Nothing wrong with building the USEFUL bridge on your own.
- bjornski, on 08/31/2008, -0/+2Well, she WANTS it, but she just doesn't think that Alaskans should be the ones paying for it.
- NorthMass, on 08/31/2008, -1/+3Oh, remember your just throwing your vote away if you don't vote for a major party!(sarcasm)
Bob Barr said it best, a vote for the status quo is a wasted vote, not a vote for a 3rd party who is unlikely to win. And Obama/McCain are just votes for the status quo. Just because Obama is better than McCain on foreign policy and civil liberties doesn't make him good enough to vote for, because he still wants to keep our troops in Afghanistan and he voted for FISA, and the Patriot Act.. - qh4dotcom, on 08/31/2008, -2/+4LOL
- thejimmyo, on 08/31/2008, -0/+2"she was for it until the cost to her state doubled because their Congress critters weren't able to get enough federal funds for it"
That's exactly the point. She was for it until she couldn't get Congress to foot the bill. Compare that to her "Thanks, but no thanks" statements. - Shuukyoku, on 08/31/2008, -1/+3Hey, the bridge doesn't go to nowhere...it just doesn't end on dry land. Amphibious vehicles only.
But don't you worry, Sarah, your lying ass is in good company in national politics. - 17999, on 08/31/2008, -0/+2They are both inexperienced. Arguing shades of inexperience between 'em is like arguing which Single-A baseball team is better.
- TheCasablancan, on 08/31/2008, -1/+2Let's do some math.
You claim 200,000 per year. OK. I have no reason to doubt you.
200,000 / 365 = 548 people per day.
548 / 24 = 22 people per hour on average.
22 / 60 = .36 cars per minute
I'll make a proportion
1m .36m
xCars 60Cars
1 * 60 = 60
60 / .36 = 167
So basically, you're telling me that if I sat down on that bridge, and a car passed where I was, that I'd have to count to 167 (Just under 3 minutes) before another car passes me. This is all assuming everyone has their own car, and no families of 2 or more cross this bridge.
LoL I'd kill for traffic that good. -
