- Apokalyps2547, on 07/13/2009, -28/+592If you think the modern GOP is too LIBERAL then you either have no idea what "liberal" means or you're completely bonkers.
- oldhick, on 07/13/2009, -11/+425I really hope this is true. She should take ALL the social conservatives with her.
- SquigglyP, on 07/14/2009, -10/+372Yes. PLEASE ***** SPLIT THE PARTY!!!
Take all your christian fundamentalist, extremist, neo-con fascist friends with you. Don't let the door hit you on the ass on your way out of the RNC, and good riddance to you. - novenator, on 07/13/2009, -16/+358So the GOP will become:
1. Normal conservatives
2. Libertarians
3. Palin style extremists
Good move Republicans. - paintgrl, on 07/13/2009, -12/+250This may be a good thing for the Republicans, maybe Palin will take all the wingnuts with her, and the Republicans can move closer to the center and build a big tent party.
- aussiejan, on 07/13/2009, -21/+203In Australia, the American Democrats would be the most conservative party here. John Howard, who was Prime Minister here for 10 years, was leader of the Liberal Party, the most conservative party in Australia. The current Prime Minister is Keven Rudd, leader of the Labour Party - home to union workers, gays, feminists and environmentalists.
I personally think Obama and most Democrats are right of center and the Republicans (at least the vocal ones) seem to becoming a fascist party. - thepoliticalcat, on 07/13/2009, -7/+176Actually, it would be the best thing for the GOP if she would siphon off the complete loonies. The GOP of Barry Goldwater and old-school conservatives was far less repulsive to me than the unholy association of wingnuts and godbags that comprises today's GOP. I'd rather deal with someone smart like Peggy Noonan or Kay Bailey Hutchinson. I may not agree with their politics but they're not out to destroy the country.
- ThsGuyRightHere, on 07/13/2009, -7/+130She doesn't realize it but that's probably the best thing that could happen to the GOP. It wouldn't be good for her sect of what is now the Republican party, but it certainly would bode well for everyone else.
- novenator, on 07/13/2009, -13/+128These people are so extreme they would have to look left to see David Duke. These are the same folks that called Bush a 'liberal', lol.
- novenator, on 07/13/2009, -7/+118Nodaki, the problem with your statement is that is creates a false perception that fiscal mismanagement is a liberal policy, when the last 30 years have clearly demonstrated the exact opposite.
Evidence: Deficits by year since Carter demonstrate a clear pattern of Republican presidents (whose base has always been conservatives) spending more than they take in: http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/3056/nationaldebt ...
This is due to the undeniably conservative policy called 'starve the beast' whereby large deficits are purposefully created to try and force budget cuts: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starve_the_beast
That's just on economic policy. Look at foreign policy. He expanded the bloated military budgets and the US became the world's policeman. This type of hawkish behavior plays well with the black and white conservative base.
Unilaterally pulling out of cornerstones of international peace like the ABM treaty and Chemical Weapons accords, as well as not joining the Human Rights council. Invading a sovereign country under false pretenses.
Domestic policy: expanding the drug war with more raids and stricter laws which put medicinal marijuana users into for-profit prisons. Conservative. Weakening environmental protection. Conservative. The list goes on and on and on. - TheR3dMenace, on 07/14/2009, -3/+103In the US, most people don't know what "Liberal" means
- fiatjustitia, on 07/14/2009, -1/+97I can't tell you how many people that I know who are fiscally conservative but socially liberal who have left the Republican Party behind entirely. If Palin pulls this off, a part of me hopes it happens: it'll filter out the wingnuts.
I like the idea of having a fiscally and politically conservative party in the US. Rational voices will always dissent among themselves, and I don't believe that my views should go without being challenged from someone on the right in a rational manner. Until something massive changes with the GOP, I don't think that's going to happen for a long, long time. - johndavidjack, on 07/13/2009, -3/+95Agreed. They are ruining the republican party, and are completely hypocritical to conservative stances.
- winstonc, on 07/14/2009, -3/+90Once you realize Palin's paranoid definition of "liberal", it makes a lot more sense:
Liberal == anyone who is against her - nosecohn, on 07/14/2009, -8/+86I fully support Sarah Palin splitting the Republican party. It'd be good for the country 'cause then the progressives wouldn't have to move so far to the right just to get stuff passed. These days, the Dems have to fight for stuff that Reagan or Eisenhower would have supported.
- waxoff, on 07/14/2009, -4/+80I'm a Democrat, but never really felt at home there. If the social conservatives GTFO of the Republican party, I might have to consider a move there. My mix of social liberalism, pro-military and fiscal conservatism don't really fit in anywhere at the moment.
- MedicSean37, on 07/13/2009, -14/+89Laugh Out Loud.
- pintomp3, on 07/14/2009, -0/+64Or "Socialist".
- ApokalypseNow, on 07/13/2009, -15/+77Maybe this third party will deal with some of the political views of her husband, who until 2002 was a registered member of a party that wanted Alaska to *succeed from the union*! Yes, we had a secessionist that might have been one heart-beat or heart-attack away from the title of First Husband. BRILLIANT.
- Firstdaughter, on 07/13/2009, -4/+59Divide and conquer as they say... /s
- SirBruce, on 07/14/2009, -1/+54Yes. Take the religious right, please!
- BasalCellBossk, on 07/14/2009, -10/+62It's damn hilarious watching the !right backpedal away from Bush when they virtually fellated him while he was in office.
Sucks to be you, hypocrites. - dafragsta, on 07/14/2009, -2/+53It's actually quite genius and good for the country. I hope she does this. Never will the chaff be separated from the wheat more effectively. Think about it. She will marginalize every ***** backwoods ***** member of the cult of personality that is the Republican party. We might actually get a real Republican party in the wake.
If you look up "hubris" in the dictionary, there is a picture of Sara Palin. Never has anyone been so unaware of his or her limitations like Sarah ***** Palin. She's becoming a caricature of herself and it's looking more and more like Tammy Fay Baker every day. - inactive, on 07/13/2009, -13/+64So she's going to create a minority party of a minority party. Fine by me, it will just take votes from the repubs while not harming the Democrats in the least.
- BasalCellBossk, on 07/14/2009, -1/+51"We are strong in our unity."
sure you are. Did so well for you last election. - ECas123, on 07/14/2009, -5/+55Reminds me of the time I saw my nephew about to stick a fork in the electrical outlet. Really didn't want to see it, knew it was a bad idea, and I was scared a little but at the same time I was thinking "this ought ta be funny as hell"
- nosecohn, on 07/14/2009, -5/+54This is the case when compared to most western democracies. Our Democratic party would definitely be considered right of center in just about any European country, and our Republicans would be considered extremely right wing. The funny thing is, you could also compare them to themselves a generation ago and you'd find the same thing. The U.S. has shifted demonstrably to the right since the late '70s.
- Anomaly100, on 07/13/2009, -7/+56I just want to know if Michele Bachmann will be her VP? Surely, Dean Koontz could get a script out of that nightmare.
- sulthernao, on 07/14/2009, -3/+51Yep. I could actually support a socially moderate/liberal, economically moderate/conservative party which is pro-intellectualism. Right now, however, there is no way I could ever vote for a Republican (other than moderates like Snowe and Collins).
- seala, on 07/13/2009, -4/+51I think most people in Australia and New Zealand would think Obama and the Democrats are right of center
- JigoroKano, on 07/14/2009, -5/+51It is a false dichotomy to paint Bush as a liberal.
- krucz36, on 07/14/2009, -2/+48secede
- Delphium226, on 07/14/2009, -2/+47Or low fat diet
- BasalCellBossk, on 07/14/2009, -4/+48kelly translated: "I refuse to listen to anybody, and will reiterate my points without any citations or evidence whatsoever because I believe it."
- inactive, on 07/14/2009, -1/+45As a registered Republican, I hope they all die in a ***** fire.
- BobSagetFan, on 07/14/2009, -13/+57Oh come on just do a porno already.
- elijahyossie, on 07/14/2009, -5/+49She's mad. Nuts. Crazy., If she had brains, she'd be dangerous
- Anomaly100, on 07/13/2009, -8/+50I just may move to Australia now. I could live with the vision you just put in my head. If Palin gets near the White House as even a maid, I'm outta here anyway. Yikes!
What party would Palin be in, in Australia? Do they even have such a party. Do they have one called "The lunati fringe?" - NotAChickenHawk, on 07/14/2009, -4/+46They just don't get it over on the right. She wasn't qualified to be Vice President, she sure as ***** isn't qualified to be President, her qualifications to be governor are minimal and she probably wasn't qualified to by Mayor. Morally and ethically, she's clearly qualified for none of the above. And yet someone thinks its a good idea for her to be the leader of a new spliter group from the Republican Party. I'm sure it will be a big success. They can rely on the political savvy and know-how of their new Dear Leader.
- sulthernao, on 07/14/2009, -0/+41"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed; those who are cold and are not clothed." - Eisenhower.
- ZeroSum1975, on 07/14/2009, -7/+48What these people ultimately want is a Theocracy led by proxy by someone like Ted Haggard or some other figurehead in the Christian Conservative movement. Pretty much, they want the kind of government The Taliban provided and when they get that they will be finally happy. If you haven't watched the documentary "Jesus Camp" you MUST watch it. These NEO/CON, Christian Conservative, GOP are trying to prepare these kids for some lunatic war. It's absolutely shocking.
- neillawson, on 07/14/2009, -0/+38Low fat diet = parts of the animal that are closer to the ground. Specifically, bacon.
- BossKey, on 07/14/2009, -1/+38I would go with you. While I don't vote Republican, the Democrats are pathetic in their own ways. If the extreme right were to leave the Republican Party, I might like what remains there.
- tmyprod, on 07/14/2009, -1/+37So if she takes all the neo-cons, social conservatives, and religious wackjobs with her, does that mean there could actually be a party for smaller (but leaner) gov, fewer laws, less taxes, and more rights?
- Swivelstick, on 07/14/2009, -0/+35The majority of democrats can't even be labeled as liberal if the correct definition is used.
- TrevorBradley, on 07/14/2009, -5/+40That the American democrats are more right leaning that the most right leaning party of ones own country applies to most other first world countries on the planet.
(Canada says "Hi!" to our friends down under...) - ftc08, on 07/14/2009, -2/+36You know why there are so many Palin stories out there?
Because it's absolutely completely ridiculous that this lady is in ANY seat of power, let alone actually had a viable chance for the #2 spot in the country. This lady is mentally unsound, the ones who rabidly follow her are just as bad.
This lady should be nowhere near any power, at all.
Welcome to a new age of journalistic responsibility. - catalysis, on 07/14/2009, -1/+35@TxAggie
What exactly makes you think the founders of the US wanted god on our money and in our pledge? - BigVi, on 07/14/2009, -1/+35It her kind of "Conservitives" that make up over 80% of the Republican party. The rest have switched to Independents or are now "Blue Dog" Democrats. Fiscal Conservitives are a ideology without a true home. I doubt with her fiscal history she would be able to get them to rally around her.
- pintomp3, on 07/14/2009, -1/+34The spending went to benefit his corporate buddies, not the poor or middle class. The lion's share of the tax cuts went to the rich. That's not leftist.
