- Shtankeh, on 09/04/2008, -18/+384So basically let me sum this up for the dense.
You have 2 choice in this elections.
Obama / Biden =
Occidental College - two years.
Columbia University - B.A. political science with a specialization in international relations.
Harvard - Juris Doctor (J.D.) magna cum laude
&
University of Delaware - B.A. in history and B.A. in political science.
Syracuse University College of Law - Juris Doctor (J.D.)
Versus
McCain / Palin
United States Naval Academy - class rank 894 of 899
&
Hawaii Pacific University - 1 semester
North Idaho College - 2 semesters - general study
University of Idaho - 2 semesters - journalism
Matanuska-Susitna College - 1 semester
University of Idaho - 3 semesters - B.A. in journalism
Which do you actually want running your country? - 309east, on 09/04/2008, -21/+204If this story actually hits the front page, it will then sprout the ubiquitous "[Reported by Diggers as Possibly Inaccurate]" tag. It seems that every story that is even vaguely critical of McCain or Palin is given this tag. Thankfully because the McCain bury brigade is so obvious about it, it really has no effect.
- MotherGinSling, on 09/04/2008, -10/+183Fact correction to comment above: McCain graduated fifth from the bottom of his class, 894 out of 899, which is the bottom 1% (lower 1/899 in a class of 899, not 1/5 of 1000). His family actually had considerable clout with multiple generations of Admirals.
- Insightful, on 09/05/2008, -9/+127I can already see McCain's answer:
"As a former POW, I do not have the luxury to pursue a graduate degree. I do not like to talk about my past much, but look at this scar that I got as a former POW which prevented from going to law school." - HopeMonger, on 09/05/2008, -3/+119894 out of 899???
I don't know about Senator Obama's grades, but he was Magna Cum Laude at Harvard law... so top 10% at the #1 Law school in the county. - aurora888, on 09/05/2008, -1/+101McCain would have been booted out of Annapolis if his dad wasn't an admiral. Bush never would have gotten into Yale if his name wasn't Bush. Obama's family didn't have the money to pay for Ivy League either. He earned it himself. Same for his wife. As far as I'm concerned Michelle Obama is more qualifed to be a VP than Sarah Palin.
- aussiejan, on 09/05/2008, -10/+98I agree with you completely but the people who will vote for McCain/Palin hold no stock in education. In fact they see education as a negative. Apparently if you are educated, you aren't someone they want to sit down and have a beer with.
- peheimbach, on 09/04/2008, -15/+98Did this woman EVER stick with *anything* longer than a few years?
- nonsequitor, on 09/04/2008, -48/+123So her family didn't have the money to buy her grades like the Bushs'. If GWB went to school on his own merit I doubt any degree would have been conferred so par for the course for the republicans.
I would not trash McCain's education though. Annapolis is one of the nation's premeire educational institutions. Being in the lower 1/5 in a class of 1000 doesn't mean the same there as it does at a civilian university. Class rank at the USNA is not determined solely by academic acheivement so its not an apples to apples comparison.
That said, Palin spending 6 years to get a 4 year degree is pretty bad. I hope the Obama campaign steps up and releases Obama's and Biden's college transcripts, daring the Republican ticket to do the same. - aftern9ne, on 09/05/2008, -7/+77Affirmative Action doesn't get you good grades.
- sallys321, on 09/05/2008, -8/+73There's gotta be a story there. Nobody switches schools so many times without some "problem".
- Insightful, on 09/04/2008, -6/+68McCain was a shoo-in for Annapolis as the legacy of TWO Navy admirals. How else can you explain how failure of a student got the most coveted position of a naval pilot (notwithstanding McCain's subsequent record of losing five planes).
- AmericanElitist, on 09/05/2008, -11/+72what is it with the gop base's fascination with electing beer buddies to high office? is that really who you want to run our country?
- thelatermonths, on 09/05/2008, -3/+55...magna cum laude at HLS, editor of the Harvard Law Review? Does that indicate anything to you?
It tells me that he's incredibly intelligent, and that THAT was how he got into the schools he got into. Not because of affirmative action. - sks46, on 09/05/2008, -13/+59Great. Two more morons who can't read, don't know the first thing about critical thinking and couldn't calculate their way out of a wet paper bag. Hmmm, sounds just like the wingnut we've put up with for the last 8 miserable years.
- gizmo78, on 09/05/2008, -1/+46impressive! It took me 4 years just to get through one college!
- CarolineAttack, on 09/05/2008, -7/+47At the very least this shows that she is indecisive, impulsive, and gives up really easily.
There is something very odd about this story.
If you came from such "modest" upbringings, why would you lose all of those credits transferring over and over again, and pay for 4 extra semesters of college that you wouldn't have been stuck with if you just stayed at one school?
I understand that some people don't end up liking the college they initially pick, but SIX schools? - inactive, on 09/05/2008, -10/+47Subprime Palin:
No education, no experience, no problem!
As with the loans, I'm sure this will end well. - Rosewren02, on 09/05/2008, -7/+42What kind of education Palin doesn't believe in 1) science (global warming) 2)teenage sex education (the preventive kind) 3)communication (her's appears to be "my way or the highway") 4) the law ( legal rights for her but not for those who do not support her), long list of former community and state employees) 5) social and community organizers (belittled in her speech) however, I would include many organizations in that list like Chamber of Commerce, Katrina relief organizations, etc.. She does believe in following direct revelations from God, I'm not sure which one or how she defines her God, I don't think it is what most mentally and emotionally well-balanced people believe.
We just don't need any more messianic driven drivel leading our country, that is why we left Europe to settle here. My family has been here from the beginning and I don't think any of them would give her or McCain the time of day.
- BXRWXR, on 09/05/2008, -7/+40At this point I'd just like to ask: What has she done right?
- ryan69969, on 09/05/2008, -6/+38Herpes...once everyone finds out, a girl just has to pack up and find a new town.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -6/+38Never underestimate the stupidity of the American public -- the Republicans don't.
- ldkronos, on 09/05/2008, -0/+30"spending 6 years to get a 4 year degree is pretty bad"
To be fair to her, that doesn't mean a whole lot. At my university, a 4 year degree was really more like a 5 year degree, unless you took 2-3 summer classes each year, or took 16 credit hours every single semester. On top of that, she switched programs from business administration to journalism, and probably lost a few credits in the process. Then transferring between universities so many times she was bound to lose a few more in that process. Why she transferred is another question I'd be curious to have answered, but I don't necessarily think the 6 years is that big of a deal on its own. - kylejn, on 09/05/2008, -7/+36Buried. Palin is a moron (she supports teaching of creationism in schools, for example), but this isn't one of the reasons why. There's nothing wrong with going to a number of different schools and without any evidence of any wrongdoing on her part (e.g. cheating or doing something to get kicked out of those schools), I see no reason for this to be an issue.
- jocknerd, on 09/05/2008, -5/+33Wow. I didn't realize Obama was magna cum laude. I'm even more impressed. It would be nice to have a smart President for a change.
- BXRWXR, on 09/05/2008, -5/+32I think it was probably unwanted pregnancies.
- suckanucka, on 09/05/2008, -1/+26Plus student loans...
Damn elitists... - ppalumbo, on 09/05/2008, -2/+26You can say it. Too bad you have a lot of trouble writing it. If anyone ever didn't need affirmative action, it was Obama.
- dmcbride6, on 09/05/2008, -2/+25"Being in the last 1/180 in a class of 900"
Fixed it for you...unfortunately, the spin you put on there doesn't make McCain any less of a moron.
Just so I understand this, since they don't grade purely on academics as you say - he must have blown ass as a cadet (or whatever you call them) as well? - inactive, on 09/05/2008, -9/+30Well damn! Even the flakiest of people don't change their major that many times.
- chr0nic21, on 09/05/2008, -5/+26So yeah....this woman is dumb as *****...shes just on the ticket because of her vagina and cleavage to make McCain look younger.
Tell me shes the best vp candidate and ill laugh at you. - robbiedo, on 09/05/2008, -1/+20Middle America can't relate to the value education and intelligence brings to grasping complex problems, and reflective decision making.
- wukillabee, on 09/05/2008, -7/+26in how much deeper ***** will the US be if mccain gets elected?
- Visual77, on 09/05/2008, -0/+17It comes down to the mentality of not wanting your president to be someone who looks down on you.
Jon Stewart once said (and I am paraphrasing the hell out of this since I can't remember the quote at all) "Not only do I want my president to be better than me, I want him to be so much better than me, I feel disgusted in myself as a human being in comparison with him." - ousthouse, on 09/05/2008, -2/+18Bush/Cheney's education history look MUCH more like Obama/Biden's than McCain/Palin
- lukeadams, on 09/05/2008, -1/+17Not in the bottom fifth, In the bottom 5. BIG difference.
- jikmo, on 09/05/2008, -2/+18Affirmative action didn't help him much. He didn't put his race on any of his college applications (source: the book he wrote. He writes about as well as most -authors- by the way, which is to say pretty well), so the only thing they could go by was his name, which told them that he probably wasn't white, but nothing more.
- jlee2081, on 09/05/2008, -6/+22at least she wasn't flat busted in college
http://tinyurl.com/6p6hcs - TheMachine1, on 09/05/2008, -4/+19Thats consistent with my hypothesis that she has higher than normal impulsivity. Oh the fact she has five kids (One at a late age I think) and a pregnant teen(partly a genetic basis for impulsivity) is what first made me come up with the hypothesis. Anyway I have extreme impulsivity and its not particularly useful trait for a leader.
- jonnyeh, on 09/05/2008, -0/+15Not everything, but the two I'd say were correlated. You need intelligence to do well in school, but having intelligence isn't enough.
Morons just don't graduate magna cum laude at Harvard, it's common sense. - JesusHimself, on 09/05/2008, -0/+15you forgot the "My Friends" part at the beginning
- dmcbride6, on 09/05/2008, -3/+18University of Idaho is a decent school academically...
I do wonder why she was skipping around everywhere though. - Hockey13, on 09/05/2008, -7/+21"McCain bury brigade"
Come on, man. I despise McCain, but to say that this site's front page has anything resembling a bias toward McCain is absurd. It's anti-McCain central around here with few, if any, stories critical of Obama/Biden. This is not because Obama and Biden have nothing to be criticized about. McCain fans are in the vast minority on Digg. With regard to "air time" on Digg, you're a prison guard complaining to the prisoner about how little freedom you have. - each3ric, on 09/05/2008, -9/+23There's more dirt on this lady than [insert whorish/drugged-up/idiot celebrity]!
And it's almost all true. I love it. Serves McShame right. - diggproof, on 09/05/2008, -3/+16You'd rather have a hot president than a qualified president, just goes to show how unbelievably stupid some people are in this country.
- ogmwtfbbq, on 09/05/2008, -4/+17Another failure from the republicans, Bush 4.0
- KnightWhoSaysNi, on 09/05/2008, -1/+14@pyronik
"wouldnt of gotten"?
People in glass houses... - austin006, on 09/05/2008, -8/+20so this girl gets around
- AverageJane2, on 09/05/2008, -1/+13We are screwed when society embraces the view that intelligence is elitism. Striving to be the best is no longer acceptable -- mediocrity is applauded and anyone trying to do better is brought down a peg or two for showing the others up. We are witnessing the dumbing down of America -- our pride is being supplanted by defensiveness and aggression.
- lopla, on 09/05/2008, -0/+12Palin admitted to smoking weed. douche bag.
