Obama, for example, voted for the Cheney bill that gave tax breaks to oil companies - NOT because he supported that part of it, but because that bill also contained a giant investment in alternative energy. Sometimes in Washington politicians roll with the punches and vote for bills they may not fully support in order to see something they do support get passed.

As for responding to the substance of his comment, he brought up Obama's vote on FISA, (which in all honesty was a disgusting display by Obama and which made me lose considerable respect for him) as a way of shifting the focus from the article.
I responded by asking him about McCain's take on the same issue.
