How about, you know, spending less money? - BBE1965, on 05/27/2009, -17/+223Sales taxes are extremely regressive and hurt the poor more than any other class. I would hope there would finally be rioting in the streets if this was pushed through,
How about trimming some billions from the military budget for a change?
Very classy of you about the dupe. I dugg both. With shouts gone no telling how important things like this will get to the front page. - hdar3415, on 05/27/2009, -14/+150Sorry, I duped this submission, please digg cfbuster's instead of this one. http://digg.com/politics/Once_Considered_Unthinkab ...
- inactive, on 05/27/2009, -12/+125so... there goes that whole "Under my plan 95% of Americans will pay less in taxes" thing.
- reaper527, on 05/27/2009, -19/+128FTA:
"I think a VAT and a high-end income tax have got to be on the table."
NO! i don't have any objection to vat if it replaces the income tax and the payroll tax, as described in the fairtax plans/books. there is no way that both a vat and income tax (never mind a high income tax) should co-exist. this isn't europe, we don't punish people for working hard and force everyone down to the lowest common denominator. - Aboriginee, on 05/27/2009, -3/+96So now what, we pay a national tax on top of a local and state tax ? Mother f***ers !!!!!!
- bobjrn2, on 05/27/2009, -10/+92Wait, a VAT & INCOME TAX? ***** my mother.
- IAMMIGHTY, on 05/27/2009, -6/+80I have a perfect idea to to save the budget.. I know it's crazy and radical.. how about we restrict the Federal Government to doing what the constitution says it has the authority to do. I know.. crazy talk.
- dave122, on 05/27/2009, -8/+81That went away a long time ago... Printing money is just another hidden tax.
- inactive, on 05/27/2009, -2/+68Would this be on top of income taxes?
- dave122, on 05/27/2009, -0/+60That's just silly.
- alex7575, on 05/27/2009, -9/+69Might as well establish a breathing tax, people can save money by holding their breath regularly...
- ShrikeDeCil, on 05/27/2009, -2/+57Naturally.
- exspasticcomics, on 05/27/2009, -5/+59is this similar to fair tax or is this an additional tax? an idea similar to fair tax- I'm fine with- an additional tax is a joke. it's not that we need to tax more- we need to spend less money. & I think the best way to do that is to publicly fund campaign election & take some draconian measures to get lobbyist off capital hill. -attempt to totally take big money out of politics at all costs.
our issue is- we're the united states pf wal-mart. - DiggCommando, on 05/27/2009, -3/+56Don't be fooled. They will promise that the Income Tax will be "looked at" if they are allowed to implement a national sales tax; this, of course, will be a bait & switch.
- cenarta, on 05/27/2009, -1/+53I'm in Los Angeles and we already have a 9.25% sales tax thanks to the idiots in Sacramento and City Hall. Imagine a VAT on top, I might have to pay 13-15% sales tax! What a wonderful way to attract business to your area!
- KSUdesigner, on 05/27/2009, -6/+55Did that last night. Do you have a sister?
- waltpsu, on 05/27/2009, -5/+53YAY for a national sales tax! Oh wait, you mean on top of the income tax? ***** you.
- mparker21311, on 05/27/2009, -11/+58I hope the American people start rioting. We've been sitting idly by doing nothing for far too long.
<--- ***** pissed off - hascat, on 05/27/2009, -5/+50People are losing jobs, losing incomes. Obviously the best solution is to tax them more.
- mnocket, on 05/27/2009, -3/+45Obama and congress are enjoying their spending orgy too much to stop.
- Spuy767, on 05/27/2009, -3/+43Well, I suppose if you want a way to make the retail sector even weaker, this would be a nice start.
- vofuse, on 05/27/2009, -29/+69Oh hey, look, we're already going to start losing more income to pay for Obama's universal, government-run health care programs. Welcome to your socialist state, suckers.
- ProKid, on 05/27/2009, -14/+52How about a fair tax?
- vuke69, on 05/27/2009, -3/+41"***** my mother."
They have a new tax for that too. - stevets, on 05/27/2009, -12/+47I know that I'm going to sound like a spoiled prick that is just bitching...but so be it.
This would royally suck ass. Living in Oregon where we have no sales tax is a very nice thing. I would hate to see that change. If it did, I think it would open the door for our own state legislators to start revisiting the idea of a state sales tax. If they were to add both of those taxes at roughly the same time, I think it would have quite the negative economic impact on many residents.
So I propose another solution: Legalize it, regulate it, tax it! You all know what I am reefer-ing to. - sindex, on 05/27/2009, -8/+43"Sen. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) said in an interview. "I think a VAT and a high-end income tax have got to be on the table.""
Along with the heads of any politician who would vote to allow both.
Fair Tax? All for it. You just want to tax me more? ***** you. How about you spend less? - lemur, on 05/27/2009, -3/+36Buried for the dishonest tactic of feigning honesty to win diggs.
- aletoledo, on 05/27/2009, -3/+35The problem has never been with collecting taxes, it's been with excessive spending.
- samard2002, on 05/27/2009, -3/+34It's not great for small business owners either. This is yet another tax to collect, report and pay. Collecting sales tax may seem like an invisible process to most consumers, but it takes up a lot of time and resources that a business owner needs to spend other places.
- phydeaux70, on 05/27/2009, -7/+38So...instead of reducing spending the government wants more money?
Change YOU can believe in, not me. - mnocket, on 05/27/2009, -2/+32Yeah, tax big purchases like cars and homes more - that will help the economy recover. /s
- herojon, on 05/27/2009, -9/+38"we don't punish people for working hard and force everyone down to the lowest common denominator."
We don't? We've been doing just that for decades now. - inajeep, on 05/27/2009, -4/+32Dugg for the honesty. A rare trait that should be rewarded.
- GreatSunJester, on 05/27/2009, -1/+29And why do you think they will spend that extra penny any more intelligently than all the other pennies they have obtained?
- V3n0M, on 05/27/2009, -1/+27And don't forget to pay your gravity bill!
- inactive, on 05/27/2009, -8/+34Hey Obamabots, is this the Hope and Change you were expecting?
- inactive, on 05/27/2009, -0/+26Meh the poor breath harder because the rich have desk jobs so it would be considered a regressive tax.
- bobjrn2, on 05/27/2009, -0/+26more like the united states of debt, and they want to tax us more? out of their minds. I'm so glad we elect people that "represent" us. Definitely not people that believe in a welfare state and want to support their local lobbyist with a monopolized government contract.
- offrdbandit, on 05/27/2009, -2/+28There's nothing stopping you from writing the IRS a check every month. What's the holdup?
- ShrikeDeCil, on 05/27/2009, -5/+30Read the cap-and-trade bill?
- therealrico, on 05/27/2009, -2/+27I don't think this will pass, at least not on the first try. But it is really annoying this is even considered, we just need to cut back on Government spending, but of course that is too logical of an idea.
- gopfan, on 05/27/2009, -6/+31Won't be long until the 'misery index' is back. Welcome to president Jimmy Carter 2.0
- vuke69, on 05/27/2009, -1/+25"I might have to pay 13-15% sales tax!"
Your naive optimism warms my heart. - inactive, on 05/27/2009, -9/+33Yes and because the liberal government (which will institute the new tax) will claim that since it's a 'regressive' tax that they'll issue tax credits to the poor. So it's just another tax on the wealthy at the expense of the poor. Just more liberal politics to solidify their base.
- vuke69, on 05/27/2009, -2/+25History however, is crystal clear on the point.
- lizard450, on 05/27/2009, -9/+31I'm sorry but our current system is indeed an sales tax and I agree it hurts the poor. The fair tax system is really good because its clear and straight forward and TRULY doesn't tax the poor. If you eliminate all income taxes entirely everyone gets a nice raise. Despite what the fair tax says in the book (I can't fault them for trying a little propaganda) this raise would mostly go to the increased cost of goods and the cost of living would remain the same and NOT hurt anyone as Fact Check stated.
Getting rid of corporate taxes would bring more companies here meaning more jobs for everyone. This would greatly help the poor.
We are paying a sales tax because an employee's cost to a company includes the roughly 33% "income taxes" the company therefore has to pass that cost on to the consumers and that is where everyone pays the sales tax.
Not to mention since its a with-holding tax and you never actually see the money yes it makes you happier and keeps you safe, but it also robs you from the interest you could be collecting if you simply invested that money. The fair tax has not this problem.
There are far fewer business then people so managing the system would be simpler. Many tax accountants would loose their jobs and they would have to put their effort towards actually producing something for society. The ones still in business would enjoy a higher quality of life too :)
Every US citizen would get a monthly check equal to 1/12th of 23% of the income level of the poverty line. Now since the poor are paying NO income tax and receiving all of their money. They are getting a 100% refund on any sales tax they could have possibly spent. Even homeless people would be getting this income.
Another benefit is that now goods from overseas that participate in our market are subject to the same "income tax" as US goods are. This will help us compete with overseas markets and tariffs would actually succeed at putting foreign companies at a disadvantage and put America first. In fact this combined with no corporate taxes would jump start growth an astronomical amount.
Not to mention this would help the environment as goods would be traveling shorter distances to get to the consumer. Especially after other countries follow suit.
The people have more money put into their pockets and they can choose to do with it what they like. If you're like me I'd spend my money getting the hell out of debt. College loans would be a lot easier to pay off if I could just live like a hobbit and have 30+% of my income and choose what to do with it.
Where I disagree with the Fair Tax is on capital gains tax in the stock market. Under the fair tax there should be a 23% sales tax when you purchase a stock. This would be good for the stability of the market, but stifle some growth as well. The stock market isn't really free market capitalism and since freedom of information is actually prohibited its ultimately just gambling and should be abolished. Opening up the information channels would have other implications, but that could work too.
The income tax is a very cryptic, sneaky, and harmful system. We should REPLACE our income tax with a sales tax. We CANNOT and i repeat CANNOT allow having sales tax and an income tax. - deema1, on 05/27/2009, -4/+26What an ignorant comment. The middle class and poor don't carry any of the tax burden on their shoulders. According to 2006 government figures at http://www.house.gov/jec/news/2008/July/pr110-45.p ... ...
The top 1% of earners shoulder 39.89% of the tax burden
The top 5% of earners shoulder 60.14% of the tax burden
The top 10% of earners shoulder 70.79% of the tax burden
The top 25% of earners shoulder 86.27% of the tax burden
The top 50% of earners shoulder 97.01% of the tax burnen
And the bottom 50% of earners shoulder...2.99% of the tax burden
Stop spreading dishonest liberal talking points and start thinking objectively. The truth is the wealthy would welcome a flat tax. Democratic politicians don't want that because it forces the lower and middle classes to pay taxes, which will hurt their voter base. The whole thing is political. The country would be better off with a flat tax due to the simplicity, the inability to shelter taxes, and the fact that it generates more earnings when times are good and less when they are bad. That forces politicians to employ financial discipline.
Now that I've enlightened you, I'm willing to bet you'll be changing your mind and saying a flat tax is bad because it forces the lower and middle class to pay taxes. - V3n0M, on 05/27/2009, -5/+26As long as they eliminate Income Tax hand-in-hand.
