- hillpehle, on 04/14/2008, -2/+10If this offended Obama then, Boy oh Boy, what will happen when the majority of the planet offends him? Cry and ask the UN to demand an apology?
- onthewriteside, on 04/14/2008, -3/+9Excuse my bluntness BUT I think the whole dislike of the "boy" word shrinks their wallies and that's why some get so upset. Race is just an excuse. When you are acting like a boy instead of man-I guess the truth hurts the ol' male ego. I don't care what color you are. Boys come in all colors, shapes and sizes.
- Buddymack, on 04/15/2008, -2/+6I would rather have a man with character that has an accent than a affluent fool with an agenda.
- caccia, on 04/15/2008, -1/+5Here's my take. Let's say a politician and his soon to start crumbling campaign showed up and any number of houses in 'these here parts' at say...2:00 in the morning looking for directions. They'd here two things while staring down a double-barrell shot-gun. First would be 'you boys aren't from around here are ya?'. Second would be a kind a gentle suggestion that 'you boys best be moving along'. No direction offered. If one of them were to speak by themself, they would indeed be called 'boy'.
- inactive, on 04/15/2008, -1/+5Or a Muslim?
- inactive, on 04/15/2008, -2/+6I would certainly not apologize. If liberals can portray Bush as a monkey, we can call Obama "boy".
- thotpoizn, on 04/15/2008, -1/+5Depends on the context. Lots of folks I know in Oklahoma and Texas will start a sentence with "Boy, did you see the hooters on her..." and they are not referring to any one person as "boy". My father in law might say to me, "Boy, hand me that wrench" - and it means nothing bad, hell he's twice my age and could probably whip my ass if I didn't kick him in his bad leg first... ;-) For that matter, anyone visibly older than me who wants to refer to me as "boy" is probably not going to get under my skin too badly, I'm pretty easy going and at least they've got the gender right. I would probably have to work at it to get too awful fired up about it, really. Like maybe if I already had an axe to grind and the word "boy" presented a convenient excuse to jump up and down and holler for attention.
- Buddymack, on 04/15/2008, -3/+7After raising 4 boys who are now well ...older I must say there is a huge difference between being sorry and sorry you got caught, and Obama needs to get that the cameras and cell phones are always on and he is always being caught, so he as long as running for president is concerned is ...always getting caught!
But to this I say don't worry Obama you can do everything but something conservative and the left will always make excuses for you, you are their Savior and you will save them and baptize them in socialism in your honor and your glory! - thotpoizn, on 04/14/2008, -4/+7My wife ran into a situation like this once; me and her were hanging out with her best friend and watching our kids, who had grown up together, playing. The friend and her man were arguing over something or another, and he said something (I don't even remember what) - to try and drag my wife into the conversation. She replied "Boy, don't drag me into this argument!" - clearly meaning "Boy, oh boy!" rather thant "Sambo" or any such derogatory thing. But he jumped all over it, getting louder and saying, "don't you be calling me no BOY!!!" - We all just looked at him in shock, like "what the hell are you even talking about?" The race card wasn't even in play until that point - it wasn't my wife and her BLACK best friend, just her best friend - until that awkward moment.
Seems to me this was quite the similar situation: a non-racially motivated moment, opportunistically twisted into awkwardness for political gain. Feh. There's white people younger than me that I could reasonably say, "That boy has no business trying to run a McDonalds, let alone run the damned country." But use the same phrase and intent to "someone of color" - and you may as well be wearing a sheet and pillowcase. - ozymandias2012, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2AMERICAN NEWSPEAK DICTIONARY
boy - Extremely Disparaging and Offensive. a person of any race or origin regarded as contemptible, inferior, ignorant, etc. - inactive, on 04/14/2008, -8/+10Sorry Obama.... Sorry for telling the truth
- theuniversal, on 04/14/2008, -3/+5Why would you call a 46 year old a 'boy'?
- thotpoizn, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2 Ross, I was asked if it would offend *me* completely outside of any racial context. So my answer was about that - the use of the word boy, applied to me, outside of any racial context. Obviously, the likelihood of Obama taking offense to the word "boy" is about a bazillion times higher than mine, given the fact that I make snow and paper look dark. Let's not be completely disingenuous here, shall we?
As it happens, the question asked included the phrase "around the same age." I indicated that I would be more comfortable if it were someone visibly older, and to clarify: I would interpret it as mildly disrespectful, more so the closer our ages appeared to be, and someone visibly younger than me trying to pull it off might be the target of a few choice bits of sarcasm.
As to Mr. Davis' gaffe, it's clear you've got him all dressed up in his little KKK outfit in your mind now, conveniently pigeon-holed and forever labeled despite his earnest attempt to immediately clear up what appears to have been an unintended slight. Doesn't really change all that much in the long run, really - you were already looking for a reason to justify hating him. - inactive, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2...such as the frmr main occupant of the White House?
- rossmcd, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2Alright, I looked back at the thread and realized that I your comments were indeed in response to the specific question posted by thotpoizn, not regarding Davis's comments. You are correct, and you have my apology on that account. However, how do you come to the conclusion from 2 lines of facts that I hate Davis and was "already looking for a reason to justify hating him"?

Do you think a white person would be offended by that? - thotpoizn, on 04/18/2008, -0/+1Why, that would be me jumping to a completely unsupported conclusion, of course. Why do you ask? ;-)
- rossmcd, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Any politician interested in being elected/re-elected will strategically decide for themselves where & when to apologize. What exactly is the confusion?
- ozymandias2012, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Who are the wealthy again?
- inactive, on 04/15/2008, -4/+5If a 46 yo acts like a boy, why not?
- inactive, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1if black people spent less time screening the world for racist remarks and more time getting on with their lives, they'd be a lot more happy.
- inactive, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1"He's" could be "He is" OR "He was."
- rossmcd, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1He's not a standing politician worried about getting re-elected. Davis doesn't want the comment to turn into a "macaca" moment that could relegate him to the political sidelines. He wasn't really apologizing to Obama, to black people, or to the media - he was apologizing to his constituents.
- rossmcd, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1The "he" in my previous comment was referring to Clinton, who I assumed you were talking about. I also assumed you were talking about Clinton's comments about Obama several months ago that drew similar ire. I was probably assuming too many things - was there some specific comment you were referring to?
- inactive, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Yes. No. No. "The rules are different f/public statements fr/an elected rep of the people[sic]." Was Wm Jeff not an elected rep of the peoples; did he not make anger-inducing statements while worried about getting re-elected?
- rossmcd, on 04/15/2008, -2/+31. He said "THAT boy". It's obvious that he did not use it in the sense that you described.
2. Davis is 49; Obama is 46. That doesn't qualify as someone being visibly older - inactive, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1"himself"
There's no confusion in this house; perhaps it's somewhere closer to yours. A joke I made yest'y isn't funny either IF it must be explained or AFTER 24 hrs. - inactive, on 04/14/2008, -7/+7Compare that remark to this

(4) “a male domestic worker or servant; a patronizing term applied esp. by Caucasians to nonwhites” - theuniversal, on 04/14/2008, -4/+3Forget race for a minute. Are you telling me as a white person you wouldn't be offended if someone you don't know and around the same age as you said to you "Boy, don't ...."?
Personally, I'd tell whoever said it to me to go ***** him/herself. - rossmcd, on 04/15/2008, -3/+2Oh, Bush had an agenda alright... Invade Iraq, spy on Americans, privatise social security, tax breaks for the wealthy, repeal environmental protections
- alanhlake, on 04/14/2008, -10/+8I'm going to tell you something: That boy's finger does not need to be on the button. I just said it and I won't apologize. It should be obvious from my picture that Barack Hussein Osama (sic) is younger than my son, so I'm entitled to call him "boy". He has not conducted himself so as to earn my respect, so he's not getting it.
- DavidS9, on 04/15/2008, -2/+0This Obama is looking more and more like Clinton every time someone says something he doesn't like he says its a racist comment, BUTT he can be as offensive as he wants to be. Yeah he sounds like a 2 year old to me and it doesn't look like my mind will be changing anytime soon
- inactive, on 04/14/2008, -7/+5Why would a "46 year old" say this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lI77cU3jsFs ?
- quetzzz, on 04/14/2008, -6/+2At least he can pronounce the word "nuclear" unlike someone else we all know, and that dude has his finger on the button.
- rossmcd, on 04/15/2008, -5/+1As an anonymous blog commenter, you can call Obama whatever you want. The rules are different for public statements from an elected representative of the people.
