- ZenaTWQ, on 05/05/2008, -2/+6I would like for Obama to answer the question..."what is a typical white person"? It's time he held a press conference to answer whatever questions anyone wants to ask. Although, It seems people are hesitant to ask direct questions for fear of the questioner being considered racist. This is UNBELIEVABLE. Being politically correct has turned into racism toward white people. There is a complete set of different standards that is sickening.
- coffeebaby, on 03/21/2008, -0/+3i am a typical black woman. i tend to avoid social situations where i am the only black person because i worry that people will avoid me or pre-judge me in stereotypical ways. i don't have any close white friends because i'm scared to open up to somebody that may secretly harbor racist feelings toward me. i worry that when i go into stores i will be perceived as a shoplifter. i refuse to eat watermelon or fried chicken in public. i wonder if friends i make online will feel differently about me once they find out i'm black. when white people are discourteous to me the first thing i wonder is if it's because i am black. i didn't think obama would make it this far because he is black. i sometimes feel guilty for supporting obama, even though i believe 100% that he is the best candidate, because i know some people will think the only reason i'm voting for him is because he's black. i'm secretly furious that i have these internal conflicts. i understand what michelle obama meant and i feel the same way. i understand where rev. wright is coming from even though i don't agree with his delivery. i'm ashamed over the way muslims are being treated but i haven't done anything to reach out to them. my neighbors (and myself) all hire south american day laborers to do our dirty work for minimum wage but nobody sticks up for them when immigration issues come up.... and if i hadn't listened to obama's speech two days ago i would not be writing this today. i want to move forward. i'm ready for that perfect union.
- inactive, on 03/20/2008, -1/+3This one is about Obama and his grandmother, are you LOST?
- motivatedmama, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1Thanks coffeebaby, I know that was hard, but damn they just keep coming don't they?
Hope you're having a great day! Keep the faith! - motivatedmama, on 03/21/2008, -2/+3I am a typical white person. I have locked my car doors when driving down MLK Ave. in Atlanta. and elsewhere.
I am a typical white person. I have deliberately avoided getting lost on the "wrong side" of the tracks.
I am a typical white person. I have accidentally ended up in a bad area of Memphis, and while nervous managed to get out without asking for directions from a black man. But it could have gone differently, right?
I am a typical white person. I have nothing against black people.
I am a typical white Mother. I cringed when my daughter told me about liking a bi-racial boy at school. I worried for the trouble it would cause with other typical white people.
I am a typical white woman over 30. I have never dated a black man.
I am a typical white person. I worked with a very cool black guy for a couple of years. A group of co-workers, Romell included would go out for a beer every Friday after work. He was a good friend.
I live in a typical predominantly white rural southern community. We still have what is know as "brown town" where the blacks are effectively segregated and the few black kids at school are generally recruited to the basketball team.
Next door is a typical white southern county. A black person knows not to be caught walking down the street there, he is likely to be beaten. Everyone here knows the blacks had better stay out of Marshall Co.
In my typical white southern community. A black vagrant known only as Chico was found chained and drowned in the public pool. We all knew his name because a black man wandering the streets here is such a rarity. No one was ever charged.
I once dated a typical 35 year old white man from Memphis. He referred to blacks as "monkeys" and did his best to convince me that they were the scourge of the city.
I was engaged to a typical 42 year old white man from Chicago. His derogatory term of choice was "gorillas" he was a bigot to the core.
I am a typical white person. I was mad as hell about the Jena 6.
The population of my town is about 14,000 with no true urban areas. If this is typical in my community, how much worse is the fear and prejudice in the cities?
If you read this and say, well! I don't feel that way! I've never done any of that! Then I believe you are the exception and not the rule. Some of these examples are more typical than others but I believe there are many, many more who can relate to this or know people like this.
There is good and bad in all of us and that is typical. All Obama is guilty of is speaking the truth. All he said is that his Grandmother was a typical white person for making a few comments and being worried about who shared the street with her. I believe the typical white person could be a bit worse than that even. It's time to get the chip off our collective shoulders, stop dissecting every word out of his mouth and have an honest discussion. Let's start working toward that perfect union. - inactive, on 03/20/2008, -3/+4Obama seems to want to dig his hole a little deeper. He's like the tar baby every time he lashes out he gets stuck. He had a well written speech that he delivered that said when his paid campaign advisor and the leader of the church we were supposed to look to if we wanted to know where he comes from screamed through a sound system "GOD BLESS AMERICA? NO! NO! NO! GOD DAMN AMERICA" it was nothing more than a "distraction".
He does not plan to quit the church. He does not see the problem.
As one of the Americans his preacher damned, it is a LOT more than a distraction.
I have noticed the usual Obama apologists claiming that some white preachers say some things that are as bad and I agree, but none of them are paid advisors on a presidential campaign and none of them are people a candidate says "look there to see where I come from" either.
Now his grandmother is a typical white person who says racist things?
Throwing his grandmother under a bus does not make anyone feel better about Obama, someone should tell him. - dre0ard, on 03/21/2008, -3/+4The person who wrote this and the person who wrote the first comment both seem to be capable of making racist remarks themselves. As for Rev. Wright, I didn't know he was running for office. His beliefs are his own. I do not agree with the politics of the leaders of all the organizations I belong to, because the organizations are not political in nature. As far as a general statement that white women of his grandmother's age tended to be afraid of black men and used racial slurs, all one has to do is look at history. But to further make the point, I am a middle-aged southern white woman, and I can tell you that this is exactly the atmosphere in which I grew up. That atmosphere and attitude is still prevalent in the South and many other parts of our nation. If you don't believe it, look at what Hillary Clinton did by trying to get Mr. Obama to concede and become her vice-president not long ago. If that wasn't a move with racial undertones, I have never seen one. A Southern White woman in second place telling a Black man in first place that he should quit the race and be her second-in-command. That was totally ludicrous.
