The issue first drew attention during the October 2007 Democratic primary debate at Drexel University, when Sen. Hillary Clinton fumbled a question from the late Tim Russert over whether she supported New York Governor Spitzer’s plan to give illegals licenses.
“It makes a lot of sense,” Clinton said. “What is the governor supposed to do? He is dealing with a serious problem. We have failed. And George Bush has failed . . . We should have passed immigration reform.”
Obama jumped on Clinton’s answer as unclear, saying he still couldn’t tell whether she supported granting driver’s licenses to illegals. But Obama left no doubt where he stood on the issue.
“I think that it is the right idea,” Obama declared. “We can make sure that drivers who are illegal come out of the shadows, that they can be tracked, that they are properly trained, and that will make our roads safer,” he said.
In the days that followed the Drexel debate, critics blasted Spitzer’s proposal. Polls showed that the issue was sinking Spitzer’s approval ratings even in heavily Democratic New York.
Critics warned that giving illegal immigrants licenses would be a security nightmare, allowing terrorists to travel on planes, rent trucks and vans, and move about the country with ease, and without detection or scrutiny. - tasine, on 10/17/2008, -0/+19LOL! These people used thier driver's licenses as identification to apply to those flight schools. Without the "government seal of approval" driver's license, these folks would likely never have been allowed to enter the flight schools.
Again, we are talking ILLEGAL aliens. ILLEGAL aliens are those who break the laws to get into this country. Since they have broken the most basic of laws for entrance to our country, I can only assume they are going to be willing to break many more. Perhaps that is why about 20% of the estimated illegal immigrants in this country are actually inmates in our correctional systems.
So, let's just hand them a perfect identification card that makes it EASIER for them to carry out their illegal activity. - frznpop, on 10/17/2008, -1/+17This is important information to have when trying to make an intelligent decision in this coming election. I find it hard to believe that this kind of policy information is so hard to compile so that those of us who want to vote intelligently have to wade through so much opinion garbage to gain info that will help us to know who we are voting for.

The Democrats don't see anything wrong with it either, or they wouldn't have a problem with everyone having to show some form of ID to vote. I'm still trying to figure out how that's supposed to "disenfranchise" anyone? You have to have one to cash a check, or even get a job - it's required.

When I went into class to take my test, I had to sign a sheet with my name, time of arrival, last 4 of my ss#, etc. and I had to show a photo ID before taking my test. This makes me wonder how illegals do it? I know they do, but how? And why is is different than me? Why do I have to practically lay out my life history to take a test, yet illegals have no valid form of ID, but they sit next to me in class? This is CRAZY!
