- jepaco, on 10/03/2008, -46/+242Obama has turned out to be right again and again, even when his own supporters weren't sure he was headed in the right direction.
- paintgrl, on 10/03/2008, -31/+172I think if people actually read his policies they see Obama has had a grasp of our countries real problems for some time.
- ScienceDoc, on 10/03/2008, -45/+164And this from a Republican Rag. Reality has a liberal bias.
- douglasdao, on 10/03/2008, -2/+95The Economist is a British magazine. It is conservative, but not Republican.
- thepoliticalcat, on 10/03/2008, -30/+109I was a Kucinich supporter who turned first to Edwards, then to Hillary because I knew this country would never elect Kucinich. To me, Obama was an unknown quantity whereas I have been a supporter of Hillary Clinton for two decades now. She turned me away with some of her remarks and her poor fiscal management and I reluctantly hitched my wagon to Obama's star. Over the past year or more, watching him work with cool, calm, quiet determination, I have been very impressed with his grasp of many issues. His management of his campaign, fiscally, politically, and personally, has been amazing to me. Most "figures" people aren't good "people" people, but this guy manages to run a tight ship without a single defection or leak, mostly on grass-roots volunteer power. He's raising money from ordinary people like us, not huge corporations that bundle hundreds of millions to send his way (yes, he has bundlers but not on the usual scale). He is charismatic and inspiring to the foot-soldiers who have to get on the phones and distribute the literature and walk the precinct blocks.
Most important of all, he knows what he's talking about. Whether it's economics or science policy, foreign relations or strategy, he's a planner and a dogged worker with an overarching intellectual grasp of the facts who can transmit that information to people who don't know and haven't care for years. I'm not in the least surprised that nearly all the economists interviewed overwhelmingly support him. He gets the same kind of support from scientists, policy wonks, academicians, and ordinary people too. Why? Because even ignorant uneducated people can tell the difference between someone who knows what they're talking about and someone who's fulla *****. He's got my vote. - cle2105, on 10/03/2008, -17/+79The Republican pipe dream of supply side economics (aka "trickle-down economics") will hopefully die with the McCain campaign. I'm glad this conservative paper acknowledges the need to invest in our country rather than hoping outsource-friendly private corporations will do it for us.

what?
nm - fugularity, on 10/03/2008, -18/+68Do you make more than $283,000 a year? Oh no? Hello, yeah, he won't be raising your taxes.
- bitfreak, on 10/03/2008, -17/+67This is what happens when a guy with some real mental horsepower gets into office. As opposed to...oh, say GWB. Or Palin. both of them are mental midgets, and McCain is borderline senile.
No offense to midgets. - mikbunn, on 10/03/2008, -2/+50The editor claims it has had a liberal social bias and conservative financial stance from the start.
Republicans just haven't been conservative for a long time. Spending trillions on war and lowering taxes isn't exactly fiscally responsible.
I love the Economist. They're just generally... right about everything. (Yes I know they supported Bush in 2000) - inactive, on 10/03/2008, -7/+50The VP debate will quickly be rendered neutral by the economy. The bailout is still the main headline everywhere.
- apastafarian, on 10/03/2008, -17/+59But according to Rush, only McCain has the answers. Who are you going to trust, Rush Limbaugh or just about EVERYONE else?
- Olon97, on 10/03/2008, -3/+38The conservatives in the U.K. have a much better brand right now. They have embraced populism, but haven't completely abandoned rational thought.
Still, The Economist has been no friend to Democrats in the past. This is big. - failedpimp, on 10/03/2008, -10/+44That's because Obama actually has a plan. One thing I have yet to hear from the McCain is details about all of his plans except for his health care plan, which is terrible. No plan to rebuild the economy, no plan to create new jobs or reduce oil dependence. I hear him say it, but no details. With Obama you get the details.
- tsf5000, on 10/03/2008, -19/+51Why do economists hate America?
- inactive, on 10/03/2008, -11/+42Those elitist economists with their ... degrees and their ... BRAINS. How dare they say they they know more about global economic policy than the average American!!
- inactive, on 10/03/2008, -4/+35The best economic plan is to CUT SPENDING and PAY DOWN the 10 trillion dollar debt.
- inactive, on 10/03/2008, -19/+48Hello, he voted for the bailout/sellout...along with McCain. Welcome hyperinflation.
HR 2755, abolish the Fed. - theutopian, on 10/03/2008, -7/+36@momomathew
He's not talking about taxing their business incomes. He's talking about the income those business owners take own, you know being employees of their own companies. That's not a cost passed on to their customers. - JaseFace, on 10/03/2008, -2/+29Jesus Christ, The Economist is one of the most fair, level-headed sources around. It's not a "Republican Rag." (And I'm a raging liberal!)
- built2spill, on 10/03/2008, -12/+38That's because he probably actually listened to economists while devising his plan. That's not usually how it works these days.
- rotundo, on 10/03/2008, -5/+31As opposed to McCain who... voted for the bailout and will raise taxes.
You're going to have to look a little deeper than that to figure out which has a better plan. Just because you don't agree with every decision doesn't mean there aren't important differences. One can still be better than the other, and the economists tend to agree Obama's better. - Hetman, on 10/03/2008, -7/+32I do not even care anymore. Everything issuie I have wanted from Obama and McCain have been overwhelmingly passed by both parties. FISA both parties, Revised Patriot ACt both Parties, Bail Out both parties. It really does not matter anymore. I will just cast my vote for an independent, and then turn around and take it in the ass by both parties. yeah democracy.
- Meadow113, on 10/03/2008, -18/+42The bottom line is who are you going to go with here, the party who is for regulation, but has had some members not always support that, or the party whose entire political philosophy is that regulation is bad. Obama gets it, McCain does not get it still.
- jonnyboy1544, on 10/03/2008, -7/+28It should be pointed out that most of the economists polled consider themselves Dems...
- inactive, on 10/03/2008, -17/+36Sorry, but anybody who supports a bailout plan backed by taxpayer dollars is NOT a true economist. I call BS on this one.
- iguana99, on 10/03/2008, -11/+30Before anyone complains that these academic economists are left-biased (most identify themselves as Democrats or unaffiliated), remember that you choose your political affiliation; you're not born into it.
- theutopian, on 10/03/2008, -2/+20The Economist is not a Republican Rag.
- fugularity, on 10/03/2008, -9/+26The vast majority of small business owners do not make enough to qualify for a tax raise, didn't you listen to the debate last night?
- bbtweb, on 10/03/2008, -0/+17@momomathew
if you are a small business owner and making $250,000 or more, then tell me what business you're in because I want to get in the market (unless you consider a small drug ring a small business) The FACT is that 98% of small business owners make less than 175,000 a year. - pintomp3, on 10/03/2008, -1/+17END THE WAR
- inactive, on 10/03/2008, -13/+29Obama should run for president
- bitfreak, on 10/03/2008, -2/+17Depends on how much Oxy he's had today.
/sarcasm - DiscoLando, on 10/03/2008, -11/+25The only group proven right again and again and who predicted the current mess we're in are the proponents of the Austrian School.
- rotundo, on 10/03/2008, -2/+15It's true. My mother was bemoaning the other day (after watching TV) that she wished there was some way to learn the actual _policies_ of the two men instead of hearing them take shots at each other.

I wonder how many people here have actually spent time reading up on these things. - inactive, on 10/03/2008, -2/+15Heh, I guess reality really does have a liberal bias. After all, what is health insurance but privatized socialism? Think about it - the people with the really serious injuries and illnesses are never going to pay enough into the system in their lifetime to make up for the cost of their health care, which ends up being paid for by people in good health.
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 10/03/2008, -2/+15Correlation: Experts agree, it's possible you should listen.
- Brian48216, on 10/03/2008, -6/+19because I'm sure you're so "wise" with your "education"
- theuber1337, on 10/03/2008, -4/+17You are looking at it all wrong. Income tax for individuals making over the above amount will see a tax increase. The middle class will see a tax decrease. The middle class will have more money to spend. They will spend it on products at business owners stores. Business owners would be making a vital mistake by raising prices to compensate their loss because the middle class will be spending more.
For a historical example, Henry Ford made an affordable automobile to the working and middle class. He payed his employees more so they could afford his automobiles. Everyone and their mother bought a Ford. Did he need to raise prices because his employees were costing him more? No. He made more money than he ever did by lowering prices and raising wages. - CrackyJSquirrel, on 10/03/2008, -5/+17Its a good thing republicans and conservatives never went to any universities then huh? Or they would have been liberals, whew, avoided that disaster.
- dinot, on 10/03/2008, -1/+13Hate to break it to you, but even the original Jesus was black.
- rotundo, on 10/03/2008, -1/+13Anyone who really thinks about health insurance will eventually realize that the best way to do it is have everyone insured by one huge organization. That's because health insurance is all about probability. If you let it subdivide, you end up with different people paying different rates and taken to the logical conclusion there's no point in insurance at all: everyone pays their bills directly.
Sound good? Yeah: until you get in a car accident and have to be put down because you can't afford surgery. The point of insurance is to spread the cost out, and the wider it's spread, the better.
Sorry folks, I love the market as much as anyone, but I realize it has limitations and health insurance should be socialized. - Seidoger, on 10/03/2008, -6/+18But Americans want to know is his family goes to church and ***** like that.
- sprNmgcHlmt, on 10/03/2008, -17/+29THIS is why we support him. It's not because he's a great speaker, it's not because he's black, blah, blah, blah. It's because the man has a PLAN.
- Ymeg, on 10/03/2008, -13/+25Ron Paul
- buddhika86, on 10/03/2008, -0/+11Yep, that's something very obvious. Only economic plan I've been hearing in all McCain speeches is 'going line by line in the budget...'. Is that what you call a plan ?
- Leviathan433, on 10/03/2008, -3/+13Their money. Grammar - amazing isn't it?
And yet you poke fun at academics... - SQLserver, on 10/03/2008, -4/+14Academic Economists = Extremely smart people who have been to high ranking colleges and understand the economy much better then the owner of the local "Frank's Hotdogs".
- fugularity, on 10/03/2008, -2/+12As opposed to Carly Fiorina who ran HP very very badly?
- pintomp3, on 10/03/2008, -1/+10pay for your own damn highways while your at it.
