- Terminaltor, on 10/12/2007, -13/+344I like that guy.
- SMITHN4, on 10/12/2007, -3/+169At first I thought that stood for Closed Caption, and then I thought to myself blind people can't see the tv anyways, then I realized I'm dumb
- greysun, on 10/12/2007, -3/+100I can't say I agree with many of Obama's policy ideas, but I *really* am starting to like him as a good example of how a politician should handle themselves. This makes me want to read more about him.
- Salgat, on 10/12/2007, -7/+101Damn straight Obama!
- DreKor, on 10/12/2007, -8/+94I was right there with you. Right up until the spam.
- chumba, on 10/12/2007, -11/+82What the heck? I wrote a comment and put a link in a signature - how is that spam? Geesh. Fine, here's my "unspamified" comment...
"About time! The whole idea that the television companies can "own" political discussion is ridiculous. Even more so, that they would assert control. Just one more thing to reinforce Obama's position on copyright reform, which is a good thing. Lets hope this happens, and if the TV companies don't want to play ball, take it to NPR/PBS, screw them." - kingkilr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+69^^Actually more people said they would be willing to vote for a black man then for a Mormon :O
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -7/+57"except hes black so he wont win...
..hey don't blame me, im just looking at trends from ALL of the presidents elected and none of them has been black. Just stating a possible fact. And actually he has a better chance than clinton which is good for all of us."
There is so much backpedaling here my eyes are spinning. - 1021, on 10/12/2007, -3/+52Yep, this is a made for the internet/blogosphere move by Obama but it's great to see candidates that actually can even thoughtfully pursue ends by such (pardon the pun) *creative* means.
Bravo. - frodsteamin2, on 10/12/2007, -6/+32i have to second your comment! at least you realized the truth
- reeder, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30These are the kind of solid decisions you get when you look to a candidate who is connected to reality, and not covered over in yes men and women.
- SecularG, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25That would be absolutely wonderful. I very much like the openness that Obama is trying to bring to politics here in the United States. Definitely a change that we need in our political system, especially since the media is not running stories, that could affect the way people vote, that are common in online news.
- ringworm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23I agree, Obama has been, throughout his admittedly short career, a strong advocate of transparency in government. I think both sides can agree that this is a desirable goal. The main bill I can remember offhand was S.2261 (http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/D?d109:29:./temp/~bdu16G::). I think there at least a couple others having to do with quickly making governmental documents available quickly to the public, usually through electronic means like the internet.
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Even if Obama is all hype and no substance, the hype is certainly good. Even if the things he talks about never happen, at least it's shedding some sunshine into the deep closets of ***** politicians don't want to even bring up. Awareness is better than nothing. He's pretty much got my vote.
- CannedMango, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23I respect what he's written here... but to be honest, all political discussion should be public domain automatically. To even have to suggest that it be "put" into the public domain when it currently isn't should be an eye-opener for us all. There's no reason why any political discussion or debate should be kept behind closed doors or only be made accessible to a small number of people. It's a democracy and everyone has equal access.
- DreKor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24smithn4, you have made my day infinitely brighter than it was before. Thank you.
- chuckmo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20"except hes black so he wont win..."
I guess JFK shouldn't have been president as there had never been a catholic president. - cerejota, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21The guy is a 100 dollar bill! Whats not to like!
- jackhole, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17I imagine Barack Obama is fully aware what "public domain" means, as that is one of his two options in the letter. From there, understanding CC licenses wouldn't take him very long. Not every politician is like Ted Stevens.
- afeitarse, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19I hope you're joking.
- somespecial, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I wonder if Viacom agrees.
- WileEPeyote, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13@blackslave
1. Anyone who starts a comment like that with "I'm black" raises my suspicion. This is the internet, you could be green for all I know.
2. My grandfather was born in in the 20's, so I don't think he could have owned slaves legally and he certainly couldn't have afforded them.
3. You do realize that Taliban != Al Quaida right? - DreKor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13not quite
...and everyone *should* have equal access. - WileEPeyote, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13@unusualbob
This isn't directed soley at you. I am just a little tired of the "he/she can't win so why bother" BS that is fed to us constantly by the media. I wish we had some sort of run-off for the office of the President, then at least you could vote the way you wanted the first time... - futureisours, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I'm conservative but score one for Obama. Heck, I'd vote for a democrat if they agree with me on the freedom of information.
- kirkio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12His website is CC licensed.
- Moriya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Finally, something both sides can (and should) agree on. As a registered republican, kudos to obama for making the first step in free flow of crucial public information.
- seasleepy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11The next entry on Lessig's blog mentions that John Edwards has also written a letter (and sent it to media execs as well as Dean): http://www.lessig.org/blog/archives/003764.shtml
And the *next* entry after that lists a bunch of folks on the other side of the fence calling for the same thing from the RNC (no candidates yet, but some prominent GOP bloggers): http://www.lessig.org/blog/archives/003765.shtml
I hope we hear from more candidates about this -- it shouldn't be a partisan issue, it's just common sense. - bugninja, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Anyone know where he stands on software patents?
- lolcat77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Blackslave, what are you talking about?
His name is simply a name. Why do you care that he was a smoker? Does that affect how he's going to legislate? I assure you he doesn't have a terrorist brother, lol. Be careful where you read conspiracy theories. Lastly his parents were certified atheists. I don't know where you're getting your ideas from.. - dagamer34, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Because having someone use your name and likeness and then demanding insane amounts of money for it isn't really a supporter. There's just out to make a quick buck.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Considering you think "liberal" means someone who doesn't agree with you, you should probably GTFO.
- Cwo655321, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11right on, i'm giving him my second vote.
(i only vote 4 times so calm down) - fuzzmeister, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Don't feed the trolls...
- spazoidspam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10and obama instantly has all of diggs votes....
- lukehh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8not to mention /. & youtube crowd.
Man, when did you ever think that those two groups would be in the same sentence. - Zuggy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@kingkilr
I'm Mormon and if it came down to Obama vs Romney I would vote Obama.
Every time I read something about him I just want to vote for him even more. - PixelVision, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8That's hilarious
- Frost9999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Your "book" is worth exactly the same as everyone else's book. One vote.
- thejessman86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm really liking Obama. I wonder if Howard Dean will accept the proposal, as well as the owner of the debate footage. The internet is a great facet in which people can learn more about each presidential candidate and decide which one to vote for and Obama knows it - especially considering his mention of the youth. I personally dislike watching news channels because of their obvious bias, filler information and at times, lack of facts. There's nothing worse than watching the news and having to listen to an "expert" opinion by a person that appears on the network quite often. I can formulate an opinion on my own, thank you. I, along with many others, look for information on the internet other than the television. Kudos to Obama on recognizes us.
- kufu91, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13***** you
- kaelyiesta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Dammit! I spent 5 minutes trying not to laugh aloud after reading that!
- SMITHN4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8As long as my retardation amuses the masses chuckle on
- grammarpolice, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Settle down kids, don't mind him he is only Texan, just feel sorry for him and move on.
- cowpie2600, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"Barack Obama's presidential campaign has returned more than $50,000 in political contributions after discovering the donors were lobbyists." --http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-070413obama-lobbyists,1,108302.story
- MSF2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Obama took control of his own Myspace!?! He must be stopped!
/sarcasm - Depraved, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Names on the intarweb prove nothing. However, your obvious hypocrisy shows that you are merely a close minded knee jerk reactionist who thinks that anyone who doesn't agree with your opinion is "racist". Quit playing the unprovable race card at the first sign of someone who has a differing view of the world and we might actually take you seriously. For now, we'll take you for what you are.
- DeathSun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm a bit of a CC fanboy--this is major points in my book.
...of course my "book" isn't worth a lot in the grand scheme. - winnch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That's not a freedom of speech issue. Imus uses the airwaves under contract that MSNBC and CBS pay for. If they don't feel that he is representing those organizations by deeply offending another group, there is nothing in the Constitution that says they cannot -- and should not -- fire him.
- fantasticFlan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Did he say they should be legally required to fire Imus or that it was the right thing to do?
