- marabout40, on 09/02/2008, -8/+44Simple yet poignant. Probably his best speech yet.
- LaceKing, on 09/02/2008, -8/+43Agreed. Short, sweet, to the point, and unifying.
- JenniferInMO, on 09/02/2008, -9/+43The posted excerpts are worth reposting in case some of you are inclined not to click through the link:
"That spirit of looking out for one another, that core value that says I am my brothers’ keeper, I am my sister’s keeper, that spirit is most evident during times of great tragedy, it’s most evident during times of great hardship, it’s most evident when natural disasters strike because we understand that only God has control and so it takes it out of the realm of politics. We all understand that we have to come together.
But that spirit can’t just be restricted to moments of great catastrophe. Because as I stand here today and look out at the thousands of folks who have gathered here today, I know that there’s some folks that are going through their own quiet storms.
[…]
There’re people out there who’ve seen their jobs shipped overseas. There’re people out there who don’t have healthcare, maybe they’ve been trying to pay it on a credit card but mostly they’ve just been putting off trying to see a doctor. There’re seniors out there that don’t know how they’re going to pay their home heating bill this winter. There are folks out there that don’t know how they’re going to fill up the gas tank. There are young people in this audience right now that have graduated from high school, have the grades and want to go to college, but don’t have the money. There are young people being born in the inner cities, right here in Milwaukee, that don’t see any prospects for the future that think the only path available to them is a casket or a jail cell.
All across America there are quiet storms taking place. There are lives of quiet desperation. People who need just a little bit of help. Now, Americans are a self-reliant people, we’re an independent people. We don’t like asking somebody else to do what we can do ourselves but you know what we understand is that every once in a while somebody’s going to get knocked down. Every once in a while somebody’s going to go through some hard times. When we least expect it tragedy may strike. And what has always made this country great is the understanding that we rise and fall as one nation, that values and family, community and neighborhood, they have to express themselves in our government. Those are national values. Those are values that we all subscribe to. And so that the spirit that we extend today and in the days to come as we monitor what happens on the Gulf that’s the spirit that we’ve got to carry with us each and every day. That’s the spirit that we need in our own homes and it’s the spirit that we need in the White House. And that’s why I’m running for president of the United States of America.
Because if there’s a poor child out there, that’s my child. If there’s a senior that’s having trouble, that’s my grandparent. If there’s a guy who’s lost his job, that’s my brother. If there’s a woman out there without healthcare, that’s my sister. Those are the values that built this country. Those are the values we are fighting for." - voxlisa999, on 09/02/2008, -8/+40OK. I have to admit this brings me to tears and I bet the people there were very moved. It's tough to get a cynical campaign reporter to actually listen to what you are saying and feel something. You know how these guys view politicians...and well everyone! They are trained to spot the inauthentic and know what is genuine,
- bluevillage, on 09/02/2008, -9/+30Obama: the calm after the storm.
- revelwoodie, on 09/02/2008, -8/+29There is audio of the speech at the local radio station's website -- www dot wbz1030 dot com.
- kaskarn, on 09/02/2008, -7/+25for the first time, I am a bit jealous of american politicians' eloquence.

Classic Obama. Moving, inspirational, genuine. - Gemfinder, on 09/02/2008, -2/+16I remember a character in Clive Barker's "Weaveworld," called The Lion Tamer. He was surrounded by his lions, but his name came from his talent for walking into disputes that were at the tipping point of violence, calming the various factions, and getting them to work together.
Barack reminds me of the Lion Tamer. - Gemfinder, on 09/02/2008, -2/+16"If there’s a poor child out there, that’s my child. If there’s a senior that’s having trouble, that’s my grandparent. Beautiful. - reugeneg, on 09/02/2008, -0/+11Don't forget that having to listen to Bush for the last 8 years makes everyone sound better.
That said, we've not had an orator of Obama's quality for a long time. - JSDigger, on 09/02/2008, -0/+11Fired up and Ready to go. Obama, our next President.
- Berkana, on 09/03/2008, -0/+9For those of you who missed his Biblical reference, "my brother's keeper", it's from God asking Cain about where Abel went after Cain murdered Abel out of jealousy, from the book of Genesis. Cain retorted, "Am I my brother's keeper?"
Incidentally the name "McCain" means "son of Cain," if I remember my Celtic etymology correctly. - bluevillage, on 09/02/2008, -0/+9Here's the direct link:

video ^here^ - Kenzan, on 09/02/2008, -0/+6You wrote: 1) . There are a LOT of Americans, both Democrat and Republican, that DON'T like what they see when they look at today's black culture in America.
**Apparently you are one of them.
Your parents must be proud, Bubba.
You wrote: 2) Barack Hussein Obama is an ex-Muslim... while it appears that this might be debatable, the fact that his middle name is "Hussein" is all most Americans will need to vote for someone else.
**This is both inherently false, and an insult to the American intellect.
It shows your contempt for your fellow Americans, rather than American contempt in general.
Read up on it, Bubba, something other than Rush Limbaugh's website preferably.
You wrote: 3) Barack Hussein Obama is EXTREMELY liberal.... "Outside The Beltway", a non-partisan political site that tracks the voting records of Senators ranks Obama as one of the MOST liberal. He's right there with Dick Durbin and Bernie Sanders, the avowed Socialist.
****One definition of Liberal is: not bound by authoritarianism, orthodoxy, or traditional forms.
Another is:
a theory in economics emphasizing individual freedom from restraint and usually based on free competition, the self-regulating market, and the gold standard: a political philosophy based on belief in progress, the essential goodness of the human race, and the autonomy of the individual and standing for the protection of political and civil liberties
Sounds pretty damn American freaking Apple Pie to me, Bubba.
~Or did you have a problem with any of these?
You wrote: 4) Obama is in FAVOR of giving 12 million ILLEGAL ALIENS drivers licenses. 80% of Americans are AGAINST giving people that are in this country illegally a drivers license. Once you have a drivers license, it is almost impossible to keep that person from voting.
This is just silly.
Quote your source on this or retract it.
5) Obama recently co-sponsored the "Global Poverty Act" bill that would subject every American to United Nations taxation in a goal of eliminating worldwide poverty. Americans are NOT going to vote for a President that is going to subjugate American sovereignty to the United Nations.
Your slant on this is both paranoid and disturbing.
The proposal is a mature, fully vetted and international plan to help the Global condition of poverty disease and hunger everywhere, which, if you have not been paying attention in the last 10 years, what happens in the remote regions of the world affects us all in some way or another eventually.
You wrote: 6) Obama plans on unleashing an entire arsenal of tax hikes on Americans of ALL income levels. Productive, hard-working Americans are NOT going to vote themselves a tax increase.
If the cause is correct, makes sense, and is transparent, has benefit and value, Americans will vote for it. Stop preaching fear. Be part of the solution.
However, what Obama WILL do is ensure the wealthiest Americans pay their proper lion's share, not the way it is now, with Middle to lower income families paying for almost everything.
You wrote: 7) Obama is running against John McCain, a moderate/liberal Republican that a LOT of Democrats like. The DNC is deathly afraid of the crossover vote for McCain. He's very popular among moderate Democrats. You can expect a LOT of moderate Democrats to vote for McCain, just as they voted for Reagan.
Maybe so, and it would be the biggest, (and perhaps the last) colossal mistake ever made.
Only time will tell. - skav, on 09/02/2008, -0/+6Link for him being against a 40-hr work week or you're either:
1) Making up fake *****.
2) Believing some fake ***** somebody is using to manipulate you. - bluevillage, on 09/02/2008, -2/+8Nice parable!
- samimnot, on 09/02/2008, -1/+7Could be that after 8 years of being embarrassed every time my President opened his mouth, I'm just easily impressed now. Barack is obviously a well educated man, but it goes beyond that. When he gives these speeches he not only comes across as very sincere, but also as someone that actually "does" have answers to the problems facing our nation today.
He's determined to put the "the people" back in the fore front of politics...as opposed to the last 8 years of Religious Fanatics and Large Corporations get all the favors from the White House.
Obviously, I'm just voicing my opinion here...but I'll also be voicing it a few months from now, when I vote for him. - Refluence, on 09/02/2008, -0/+5I thought twice before posting this, as most people that say "he just talks about doing things, but doesn't do them" haven't bothered to do any research. There's a bajillion page document on his website detailing all of this. Try reading before bashing.
- dinot, on 09/02/2008, -4/+9other prominent democrats = 1 democrat.
you lose. again. - Gutterpunk, on 09/02/2008, -0/+5Here is the reasons why l3ool3 is irrelevant :
1) he is an idiot spouting talking points that he saw on Fox News. - richbleak, on 09/02/2008, -2/+7Sort of surprising to see that McCain is not towing the same line as other prominent Republicans and having sex with dudes in airport bathrooms.
- kingofinternet, on 09/02/2008, -4/+9'love thy neighbor'

You may not be a Republican or a Democrat, but you certainly sound like an elitist, out-of-touch douche-bag. - lalalalamppost, on 09/03/2008, -0/+4Good observation. And yes, "McCain" does mean "son of Cain."
Cain murdered Abel because God found Abel's offering more pleasing. I suspect McCain to be most jealous of his able rival. - Kenzan, on 09/02/2008, -0/+4@seocookieseocookie Been to the Library of Congress' website recently?
I have, and you are incorrect on all of your points.
You might want to do some actual research besides just regurgitating what you read on pundit blogs - jraff2, on 09/02/2008, -0/+4Psssst. Heres a clue:

- IneedaSN, on 09/02/2008, -1/+4Maybe you should listen to the whole speech where your getting that quote from and listen to it in context
- jraff2, on 09/02/2008, -0/+3I spent hours trying to figure out "how it will be done".... It was really, really difficult. It was like they are hiding this information from us!!!! /sarcasm

Just for a change from the failures being put out by the Republicans, you know?
Just for a change.
Time for a change. - mad05963, on 09/02/2008, -2/+5Well we used to have a surplus... what did happen to that darn surplus?

- BossKey, on 09/02/2008, -0/+2seocookie, FYI, the French presidential election is OVER.
- Kenzan, on 09/02/2008, -1/+3The bottom line: People are having to choose between food or heat this winter.
Food or Gas.
Our standard of living is *less* than it was 8 years ago.
We are currently $9,653,398,559,000.00 in debt.
Civil Liberties are at a historic all time low.
Most middle-class families cannot even afford a house to live in.
We are engaged in a war for no reason, and the ones that were given were false.
Most Americans cannot afford to see a Doctor when ill.
It goes on like this.
America is sick of your *****, Republicans.
The greed, the ignorance, the apathy, the racism, the abuse, the disenfranchisement, the corruption....
It all ends on November 4th.
GOTCHA!
Obama/Biden '08 - skunalis, on 09/02/2008, -2/+4the only reason that obama doesn't speak more intellectually, is that americans are magnitudes stupider now than they were in the 60s. if obama spoke using a lexicon that mirrored JFK, no one would understand him. in fact, he would be called a elitist fool. it's not that obama isn't an intellectual, it's that he understands who he's speaking to. and he's not speaking to you. but you can reap the benefits of his presidency all the same, much like we dealt with the destructive reign of your failed president.
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -1/+3I never claimed to be fair. If anything I just enjoy balancing out the liberal bias on Digg.
Besides, trolling for ***** on your own time, isn't quite like making statements about Gustav being a gift to your party during a meeting or an interview. Not to mention Craig has never endorsed ass-***** other men. - Kenzan, on 09/02/2008, -0/+21. No where in this current thread did you say you were not a Republican.
You should read your own messages, because you are confusing this thread with another.
2. No where did i state you were a Republican.
3. Your points are mere sound bites, ***** that you obviously picked up from watching CNN and other net-crap sources.
Go to the library of Congress website and read, truly READ about all candidates.
What they sponsored, what they stand for, what they propose.
You cannot say you have done this because you have your facts way wrong.
After informing yourself, Then make your choice.
Otherwise, admit you are just one of the "sheep" you so love to look down upon. - katyslp, on 09/02/2008, -0/+2I agree. I spent hours waiting for this speech (two and a half to get tickets and another two sitting in the bleachers beforehand.) While it would have been nice to hear a long speech, what he said in 15 minutes was perfect for the situation, and all the waiting was definitely worth it.
