- kamikazicondon, on 04/18/2009, -3/+92YES!!! Cuban Cigars!
- humanerror, on 04/18/2009, -4/+69Soviets?
You don't follow the news much, do you? - ThatGeek, on 04/18/2009, -8/+52you mean we might want to be at least cordial with our neighbors? Who da thunk it
- inactive, on 04/18/2009, -3/+41Hmm... If the 2012 campaign commercials are being written from this, I'm forseeing... Another fail for the Republicans. You just... don't get it, do you? I think it's ***** hilarious that the Republicans keep making the same mistakes and can't understand why they keep losing. Get some substance, for *****'s stake. Actually have a platform that isn't based simply on reactionary fear.
- s14sh3r, on 04/18/2009, -1/+33We don't mind it from China, apparently.
- peestandingup, on 04/18/2009, -6/+37Good. This thing has gone on WAY too long.
- avalenci, on 04/18/2009, -2/+32The easiest way for the US to increase it's influence in Latin America would be the lifting of the embargo to Cuba. How many UN's resolutions do we have about this ? 17 ? This embargo is not only limiting american companies , but other companies in the region that are afraid about making deals with the island because they also have business relations with the US.
- Findeton, on 04/18/2009, -2/+23Yeah yeah, of course. You have no *****' idea of what you are talking about. We only accept China because it gives us money, not because is taken any step towards market liberalization.
- mickstephenson, on 04/18/2009, -7/+26Oh noes, another country wants to arm there armed forces, they must be crazed fanatical loons. Or perhaps your just annoyed the biggest arms dealer in the world didn't get to wet their beak in this deal.
- macmcraeart, on 04/18/2009, -1/+20damn he gives them a new beginning with pic AND a video
- tpmidd, on 04/18/2009, -2/+21Apparently we don't either.
- tsmallm, on 04/18/2009, -5/+24OMFG will you people calm down, Cuba is not a threat to the US. lets look at this an optimistic way, maybe now we will have cheaper cane sugar and another tropical island to visit. oh and cigars for those of you who smoke.
- Fallout911, on 04/18/2009, -0/+19As a Cuban-American I have to say that this is really awesome news.
- inactive, on 04/18/2009, -6/+24I can't wait to hear some Glenn Beck or Hannity, that because Obama shook hand with Chavez he now got the evil socialist germs.
- Bulletbillx, on 04/18/2009, -1/+19You know what they say though. "Insanity is trying the same thing over and over and expecting different results."
- aircool, on 04/18/2009, -11/+28Very noble.
- macmcraeart, on 04/18/2009, -0/+16you must have the terrorist fist jab they did a little later.
- bugwayji, on 04/18/2009, -5/+19(real) torture...lol...American's are so self righteous, it's hilarious.
- inactive, on 04/18/2009, -0/+14Soviets? You've got to be kidding me.
- wavesmachine, on 04/18/2009, -8/+22Dugg for Trinidad and Tobago
- ciaran036, on 04/18/2009, -1/+14Hugo Chavez is for socialism, not communism.
- Rub3do, on 04/18/2009, -2/+15Yeah because we have this great track record of straightening out other problematic countries like Vietnam and Iraq.
- jamesmcm, on 04/18/2009, -0/+12And he was democratically elected. Then when the CIA tried to oust him in 2003, the people freed him.
Watch http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5832390545 ... - inactive, on 04/18/2009, -0/+12We don't mind it when other countries do it for us.
- jbella, on 04/18/2009, -1/+13Facism is not necessarily "liberal", in fact it's usually associated with the extreme right. Of course when you are out on the fringes the labels we like to use in the US make less sense. I think if you have any common sense you'd realize that calling Obama either fascist or socialist is rather ridiculous.
- naldwell, on 04/18/2009, -3/+14How about Americans give back what they have taken from Haiti, Ecuador, Guatemala, El Salvador, Jamaica and Peru? And that's just a few of the countries they have interfered with in their own backyard.
- eatinshramps, on 04/18/2009, -1/+12HELL YES!
- ciaran036, on 04/18/2009, -5/+16Well actually, the news doesn't help much. Maybe a bit of a look into history and politics may clear things up.
- jbella, on 04/18/2009, -2/+13Like that picture of Rumsfeld shaking hands with Saddam Hussein?
Or how about that whole nixon going to China thing?
Do you like the video of GW holding hands with the King of Saudi Arabia?
Lets not be naive. The US has a long history of playing nice with douchebags. - inactive, on 04/18/2009, -0/+11Bush shook hands with Chavez *shrug*.
- inactive, on 04/18/2009, -3/+14"Chavez is an ***** whose country hates him but are too afraid to do anything about"
Correction, the right wing conservative portion of the population, hates Chavez. And they did do something about it when they tried to overthrow that government. They failed and now all they did is bitch about him on public radio.
Even if they're successful in another attempt to take control of the government, it wont be easy. They'll have to eject, move or murder all the judges and then have the peasant population to deal with. It will go from a socialist to Facist government overnight. - jbella, on 04/18/2009, -2/+12You guys really don't know what "socialist" means, huh?
- Krumpenstein, on 04/18/2009, -1/+11The US shouldn't make it their business to transform other countries political systems. Besides, 47 years of an embargo hasn't done much good for anyone.
- smackydoodle, on 04/18/2009, -7/+17Why would the Republicans use this when Bush shook hands with him too.
It's like the past 8 years never happened in the minds of Republicans. - jamesmcm, on 04/18/2009, -1/+10Einstein said that, Einstein also supported Socialism see: http://www.huppi.com/kangaroo/Einstein.htm
- inactive, on 04/18/2009, -0/+8It worked for GW Bush when visiting Saudi Arabia.
- phosphite, on 04/18/2009, -0/+7It's all about oil. Yee-haw!
- naldwell, on 04/18/2009, -3/+10Just another South American country on the slow road to recovery after economic rape at the hands of US companies and the CIA.
- jbella, on 04/18/2009, -0/+7We apparently don't mind it if we do it ourselves either. Of course as long as it happens on our magical military base in Cuba. You know the saying...what happens in Cuba...
- durruticolumn, on 09/18/2009, -0/+6"Exactly what have we taken from them? "
30,000 Chilean lives, to start. - inactive, on 04/18/2009, -0/+6As if the two are mutually exclusive?
- P5ycHo, on 04/18/2009, -1/+7Ok. So keeping up the embargo helps these people how?
- NUMBER4940, on 04/18/2009, -0/+6For Cuba or the US or both?
- inactive, on 04/18/2009, -0/+6Foreign Policy isn't about enforcing our morality on the world and helping the cute little children. Foreign Policy is about pursuing the best interests of the nation abroad. We dealt with brutal dictators like Pinochet or Franco in the past, and that too is fine so long as it's the best option for our national interests.
- Blitzenn, on 04/18/2009, -3/+9I am so thankful to see that we have finally let go of the anger of our ancestors. Lets be real honest here and admit that this previous policy was completely based on sentiments and beliefs of the last generation. Beliefs and sentiments that many of us in this generation find abhorent due to the intolerance and outright resentment habored within them. They don't reflect our beliefs anymore as a people and it is time to change them. Thank you Mr. President for listening. My hope is restored.
- hatdrop, on 04/18/2009, -0/+5WOLVERINES!
- AManWithNoName, on 04/18/2009, -1/+6Seriously. I can understand having the wrong stance on issues, because we all make judgment mistakes, but to stick to those stances when they've failed as much as these have? That's outright moronic.
Sticking to your guns is good, unless the gun is aimed at your foot. - chthonical, on 04/18/2009, -1/+6You don't improve the conditions within a country by closing its borders and cutting off export. In fact, part of the widespread poverty in Cuba could be in part linked to US action against it. That and Castro being a total jackass who pampered himself on the backs of his people and stole their possessions.
The economic proof: C + I + G + (X-M).
The proof of Castro being a douche: I have a second hand account given to me by a college math/marine biology professor who was a Cuban immigrant. Told of the fun times when Castro had his dad's car confiscated because he wanted it for his collection. - Fallout911, on 04/18/2009, -1/+6For both, sorry for not making it clear.
The only thing that Cuba needs is freedom of information, once the info starts to trickle in the dictatorship will end. -
