- Janinco, on 05/16/2009, -3/+105I'm sure the fact that Gov Huntsman speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese, helped in making this selection.
- leontes, on 05/17/2009, -2/+63Perfect. Obama, keep on appointing reasonable moderate Republicans in choices for your administration. The more you can isolate the far right of this old two party system the greater the likelihood of cooperation and long-term power for the adaptive, pragmatic, progressive approach of your administration.
- eMximeR, on 05/16/2009, -34/+66BUT OBAMA HATES REPUBLICANS!!! HE REFUSES TO WORK WITH THEM!
- sdwilly, on 05/16/2009, -0/+31I moved out of Utah a few years back, but from what my friends there have told me Huntsman is making some nice changes to the state (See recent changes to the drinking laws as example).
- inactive, on 05/17/2009, -3/+33Guess you're being dugg down for the lack of /s.
- Dizzy88, on 05/16/2009, -14/+39well naming a "rapidly rising star" to be the ambassador to a country half way across the world is one way to get rid of any competition.
- mattsx, on 05/17/2009, -0/+24Possibly. The LDS Church (Mormon) sends lots of white young men all over the world on missions. China (and other mandarin speaking asian countries) included. Senator Huntsman served a mission in Taiwan, where he learned to speak Mandarin Chinese. http://www.mormonwiki.com/Jon_M._Huntsman,_Jr.
- Shiftgood, on 05/17/2009, -3/+25you deserve the ***** life you have.
- BCPneumatics, on 05/17/2009, -0/+21Anyone running for political office would kill for this opportunity. Of course the moral standards of politicians isn't that high...
- BCPneumatics, on 05/17/2009, -1/+20Yeah, bulk up the competition with heavy foreign policy experience, that'll get 'em. Obama's obviously thinking ahead and stacking the deck for next election season. He didn't exile the guy, you idiot.
- MetalHead73, on 05/17/2009, -1/+20Well it just so happens the man is incredibly qualified for the position.
He can run in 2016 as well. If Obama's popularity lasts, it would be a waste of energy to run against him in 2012. - divinediva, on 05/16/2009, -5/+22A rapidly rising star in the Republican Party.
- shrathor, on 05/17/2009, -7/+22Yup, actually not nearly as annoyed to live in utah anymore. Still too many damn mormons though.
- pashdown, on 05/17/2009, -0/+13Yes, and he will be missed.
- nepidae, on 05/17/2009, -2/+14moderate is different than reasonable. We need to disequate religious from the equation. What we need is republicans who drive for smaller government and democrats who drive for social programs. This is what creates a healthy society. Until republicans separate themselves from religion we cannot have a true multiparty system.
- inactive, on 05/17/2009, -2/+14What kind of "rising star" is he if nobody ever heard of him??
- InfiniteNothing, on 05/17/2009, -0/+12I know a white guy who speaks mandarin fluently. He spent a long time with his asian wife in China. It's really really wierd to see him talk. It's like what he sounds like and what he looks like doesn't match.
- michaelpinto, on 05/16/2009, -3/+14This is a good step to changing the tone in Washington and a wise choice of someone who can engage China.
- relaxeder, on 05/17/2009, -2/+13(Yawn)
- brandozilla, on 05/16/2009, -0/+11Good choice.
- kooredaan, on 05/17/2009, -0/+10Please clarify as your statement makes no sense.
Naming a member of the opposite party to a semi-important ambassadorship is not business as usual. Hell naming a Hillary Clinton as SoS is anything but usual. - OutlawSundown, on 05/17/2009, -1/+11
So by definition of "real" you mean so detached from reality and that they're completely unelectable.
Barry Goldwater and Reagan are moderates by the current republican party's ridiculous standards Theodor Roosevelt and even Eisenhower would practically be socialists. Then there is Thomas Jefferson whom they love to claim.. his views on religion alone would probably have the religious right up in arms. - nepidae, on 05/17/2009, -2/+11joke? I would love for some republicans to stop ***** around. whichever side you are one, 2+ real parties are good for everyone.
- nepidae, on 05/17/2009, -1/+10he's no nixon, but I hope he does well.
- Shadic, on 05/17/2009, -0/+9What the hell are you talking about? What's wrong with finding a (Republican) Moderate who knows his *****, and giving him a job fitting for his abilities?
- Lleu, on 05/17/2009, -1/+10two*
I think we know which one you belong to. - KublaiKhan, on 05/17/2009, -4/+13I think that's a pretty inarguable point. But was I the only one who was quite surprised to see that a Republican from UTAH, of all places - and a very, very white dude, it seems - fluently speaks a very difficult Asian language?
- boydrew, on 05/17/2009, -0/+9quote content? you confuse me on many levels twiztid
btw why are you hating on Rush? I think their music is great =P - Wigmeister, on 05/17/2009, -0/+8Well, I hate to break it to you guys but it was pretty much a political move. Huntsman is a rising star in the Republican party and a potential candidate for president in 2012. Either way, good move by Obama.
- jbella, on 05/17/2009, -0/+8You guys kill me. If you could harness 1% of the creativity that you guys put into distorting Obama's name, you might actually be able to come up with a new idea.
- malex, on 05/17/2009, -0/+7God I wish I could be sure this was just sarcasm...
- leontes, on 05/17/2009, -0/+6The two party system is so antiquated and reductionist. Bring in everybody, let there be coalitions and allies and lots of different perspectives. Sure, be religious, be atheistic, be pro-israel, be pro-arab... Let the voices ring out and let dissent be heard. Let the leaders form seats of power from the needs of the society in the hear-and-now and let the rise and fall of leaders come from the contemporary zeitgeist rather than from an over-simplification of ideas. Obama has the right idea in co-opting the more moderate voices, so that we can, in the end, greater fragment and dispose of this elephant and donkey grudge match that happens every 2 years. Reasonable and unreasonable debates that resolve after listening and adaptation- that's the way for the survival of the fittest thoughts. Political darwinism, based on the chorus of diversity rather than blandness of false charisma from the most inoffensive voice.
- nepidae, on 05/17/2009, -0/+6IMO its better to have something like this to be proud of for the state you live in, even if they leave, than having nothing.
- UberNick, on 05/17/2009, -2/+8Unless it's the mutherflippin Republican party. They really should split off to beef up the Libertarian and Constitution parties, leaving about half the rest for a white christian authoritarian party. I wonder which Rush would lead?
- vision777, on 05/17/2009, -0/+6Need to do away with the parties and we can just vote for the best person to fill each seat.
- mr_wej, on 05/17/2009, -0/+6Five bucks says you hadn't heard of Obama 6 years ago either.

His chinese is so bad that it gives me goosebumps. - falstaff, on 05/17/2009, -1/+6So are there any specific policy disagreements, or are you just a partisan hack?
- mr_wej, on 05/17/2009, -0/+5I think clarification is in order, I think most diggites are fine with people sharing their beliefs on a volunteer service mission, it's the manipulation of the media and attempts to legislate morals and religion on others that lots of people don't seem to like.
- SummerofGeorge, on 05/17/2009, -0/+5fluent mandarin from an american or chinese level of understanding?
- snafflepaffle, on 05/17/2009, -2/+6This is a good move for everyone. I don't see any down sides. Looks good for Obama to appoint a Republican, plus he gets someone who apparently knows what he's doing and is familiar with the culture. Huntsman get squeezed out of the 2012 race, but there's a good possibility that he wouldn't have had a chance anyway. But his credentials are enormously bolstered for 2016. He'll be a front runner right out of the gate.
- SummerofGeorge, on 05/17/2009, -0/+4for the people who dugg down unhg... mandarin is 50% speech and 50% tone. if you ***** up the tone it'll be a entirely different word
his mandarin is gut-wrenchingly bad, may as well have gotten someone who spoke none - Pinkertinkle, on 05/17/2009, -0/+4That's what the Chinese call a western imperialist barbarian accent.
- EvansHall, on 05/17/2009, -0/+4Pretty sad state of affairs on Digg that the only sensible comment on here has -10 diggs.
- zephyear, on 05/17/2009, -6/+10kind of hard to run for president in 2012 when you're in china
good move - esdjco, on 05/17/2009, -6/+10Who named him a rising star?
- gordigor, on 05/17/2009, -0/+3It's still annoying especially since the only mormon I voted for is leaving.
- JuanDCope, on 05/17/2009, -0/+3I'm really bummed about this. He's made a ton of headway in making Utah not a laughing stock.
- inactive, on 05/17/2009, -0/+3Unlike that other Senator who speaks fluent Mandarin, and would've been the perfect candidate!
- INTERNETMASTER, on 05/17/2009, -1/+4yeah. I used to love Obama, but after this, I hate the guy!
