- tracygav, on 07/20/2009, -18/+75He has broken 7 and kept 32 - that's not too bad.
- NiftyG, on 07/20/2009, -42/+93I still like him.
- KenSPT, on 07/20/2009, -63/+114During the campaign when myself, and others, made comments that Barack Obama was simply saying what he needed to say in order to get elected, we were called every name in the book. Personally, on this site alone, people said I was racist, they called me a 'Right Wing Nut Job", and they claimed I hated America; it was rather ridiculous.
People just couldn't fathom the idea that Barack Obama was (gasp) a politician, someone who will do what he needs to do to convince the public to elect him to office. If we said anything negative about Obama, they'd retort with pointless facts like the number of houses John McCain owns, or how much Cindy spends on her wardrobe. They ignored the elephant in the room, mainly because they were caught up in Barack Obama's celebrity status.
Far too many people who voted for Obama didn't do so because they agreed with his values or ideas; hell, alot of them probably couldn't even name his stance on simple topics like gay marriage or abortion if they were asked. Nope, a good amount of people voted for Barack because the media made out all Republicans to be evil, and they painted Barack Obama as a superhero who was going to sweep down to earth and miraculously save our country from the peril we're in.
These people wanted to vote for Barack so they could buy T-Shirts with his face on it, put bumper stickers on their car that said "Change We Can Believe In", or so they can say they agree with great political minds like Diddy and Ludacris.
This past election, far too many people didn't look at the big picture or the issues, they instead acted like High School students and "did what the popular kids are doing"; this is what happens when you do that.
In short, you got what you elected. You got an inexperienced politician who has gone back on almost half the campaign promises he made. Basically, you got exactly what myself and others said you would get all along; but you wouldn't listen to us during the campaign, because we had to be "evil nutjobs" if we said such things.
You elected a President because he was "the cool choice", and now you and I both get to "reap the benefits" of your "intelligent decision".
When America is in a worse state a year from now than we are right now, will you still be screaming, "YES WE CAN !!!" ? - DogofWar1, on 07/20/2009, -29/+80I was gonna respond to individual threads but there are a few already, and probably more to come so I'm gonna get set the record straight here.
People who are attacking President Obama for not following up on his campaign promises need to realize that they are frothing at the mouth for no good reason.
1. It has only been six months. SIX BLOODY MONTHS! Not eight years, not four, not even a full ONE! And yet, you guys go nuts. Obama packed eight years worth of promises (and work; honestly, completing a war, healthcare reform, fixing an economy, etc, etc. is not a short term simple task) into his persona, and as such, I suspect it will take eight years to get everything done.
"OMG, he hasn't repealed DADT. Obama has turned his back on the gay community!" - Okay, listen people. I'm sorry if this offends homosexuals, but in all honesty passing the stimulus took priority. Same with healthcare. The political firestorm that repealing DADT would cause would derail anything Obama wanted to do for weeks if not months. He's prioritizing. Generally that's a good thing.
2. He has hardly gone back on a lot of promises. He said he would pass a stimulus. He did. He said he would have a timetable for withdrawl from Iraq. He does. He said he would work on healthcare reform. He is. There are lots of smaller things too. So he hasn't kept every single promise. No politician does. The difference between random politician x and Obama is that Obama is trying, but the going is slow in a world that demands instant gratification. Seriously, chill out, wait until summer of next year to start attacking Obama for not doing things. Of course, by then he'll have got significantly more done, and your argument will be even more untrue then than it is now. - arbiter13, on 07/20/2009, -9/+50"stooping to respond to political foes"
WTF? Responding to political opponents is "stooping"? He's a politician, not the infallible messiah. He won the election by 53%. That does not mean everyone has to roll over and do what he wants. - Solkre, on 07/20/2009, -10/+49Are we hating Obama now? I'm so behind.
- drmangrum, on 07/20/2009, -2/+30Sadly, most of the people on Digg can't see the hypocrisy of their tactics. Most are so hopelessly Liberal (they can't think for themselves, they tow party lines), thee brand everyone who disagrees with them as a right wing nut job or a "Rethuglican." Of course, they do this while wagging their fingers at the right wing that does the same thing.
- Glugory, on 07/20/2009, -5/+33If you think Bill Maher is turning his back on Obama then you obviously have no clue what you're talking about.
- methdwman3, on 07/20/2009, -5/+29@CHUCK - One of the promises kept listed is getting his family a dog. Nice fluff.
- Cputerace, on 07/20/2009, -9/+33Look at what he has broken tho... The real meat and potatoes of his "Change" platform:
Allow five days of public comment before signing bills
Tougher rules against revolving door for lobbyists and former officials
Negotiate health care reform in public sessions televised on C-SPAN
Allow penalty-free hardship withdrawals from retirement accounts in 2008 and 2009 - ColonelSlanders, on 07/20/2009, -27/+50on a scale of 1 (worst) to 5, (best) i'd give obama a 3 so far
he isn't horrible but he honestly hasn't impressed me much, or even at all, yet
the fact that it doesn't seem he's going to get rid of warrantless wiretapping, which was a campaign promise, is severely disappointing
although i do like some of his policies/ideas. i really hope he can reform healthcare. the current system is so broken.
just some stuff off my head - methdwman3, on 07/20/2009, -7/+30I'm pretty sure Carter is universally recognized as a horrible president.
- quarando, on 07/20/2009, -8/+28Yes, Obama is a brand and a triumph of the marketing industry. Every president since Reagan has been marketed like a product, however. This isn't unique to Obama, his handlers just happened to be more successful at it than most.
McCain was also a brand, he was the Maverick, the "Country First" guy. "Country First" lost out to "Change" last year. So what? Elections are never about issues. If people believed they could have a real impact on issues they wouldn't vote Democrat or Republican.
I mean if you assume the choice is between only Obama and McCain, and you look at the issues, Obama is slightly better than McCain, but the differences are narrow. - pathouston22, on 07/20/2009, -23/+431. Will raise taxes through cap and trade, lied like a Bush
2. Won't release White House guest list, covered up like a Bush
3. Defend's Bush's wiretapping, breaks the law like a Bush
4. Chopping trees in Alaska, ruins the environment like a Bush
5. Supported FISA, tramples our rights like a Bush
6. Continuing renditions, ignoring human rights of others like a Bush
My ever growing list. - kipmarlowe, on 07/20/2009, -11/+31I remember the same thing being said of every president in our nation's history, whether popular or unpopular. Sometimes unpopular for the doing the right thing, sometimes popular for doing the wrong thing.
This is about what Obama's record is at this point in his young presidency: http://politifact.com/truth-o-meter/promises/subje ...
I also find it suspect that so many have hated Obama so early. Naw, there's no bias or bigotry at play here! - Cputerace, on 07/20/2009, -9/+28"Bush lied so Obama can too"
logic FAIL - KennMac, on 07/20/2009, -2/+21Criticizing the President is not the same as turning your back on him. Not everything is so black or white. It's amazing how people expect complete partisanship nowadays... you're either licking his nuts, or hoping he drops dead. Kinda makes me sick.
- ApokalypseNow, on 07/20/2009, -1/+19Um, yeah he was - haven't you seen the birth certificate? It has been available for over a year, and states in no uncertain terms that he was born in Hawaii.
Oh, and any birthers who happen by, please bring up the oft-debunked bit about his grandmother's interview. I just love shooting that one down by quoting the actual interview. - drmangrum, on 07/20/2009, -4/+21But why do you like him?
Do you like him because it's the cool thing to do?
Do you like him because you actually agree with his policies?
Do you like him simply because you hated Bush?
I think most people are completely deluded about Obama. The guy is damaged goods. The same people who bitched about Bush&Cheney giving loads of money to companies like Haliburton are conspicuously carefree about Obama doing the same thing with banks, investment firms, auto companies, and unions.
Obama has done a good job in making people believe he's for the average American, the little guy. However, his decisions show anything but. He's bailed out all these huge companies under the guise of job creation, but these same companies have posted billions in profits while slashing costs (ie layoffs). When most of the newly created jobs are small business and NONE of the bailout money is going to aid small business, and when most of new and proposed policies hurt small business, I can't take him seriously. - ChuckDees, on 07/20/2009, -33/+50Has he surpassed the number of Bush lies yet?
- Rizzen, on 07/20/2009, -2/+19Exactly its not a pure numbers game. As far as these go its quality far and above quantity.
- ApokalypseNow, on 07/20/2009, -7/+23@17999
Check out Politifact's Obamameter. - Xbef, on 07/19/2009, -44/+59If Bill Maher is turning his back on this Pres then you know something is very wrong.
- appleofdischord, on 07/20/2009, -1/+16I'm fairly undecided as well. I was very happy with how he has handled the situation in Iran. I am not happy about his failure to follow through on government transparency and human rights violations.
All in all, I'd say he's been a good leader, but not an extremely upstanding one. - DarkBlueAnt, on 07/20/2009, -3/+18I understand totally. Whenever I suggested that he was just okay or said that McCain wasn't evil, I got angry looks. I wasn't saying he was horrible, I was just saying he's normal. Why would people bash me for that? Hell, I even voted for him!
That episode of South Park about the election was so accurate. - ChuckDees, on 07/20/2009, -23/+38Politico = Drudge Report
He should be more vocal with the critics on the economy and those who want to stand in the way of health care reform.
Right wingers want to act like the economy just became bad in Jan 09.
Sorry Bush watched it get worse since 2006 just one more example in a long line of no leadership over the last eight years. - KenSPT, on 07/20/2009, -2/+17Exactly, and they do this in so many ways.
For example, remember when Miss California said that she didn't support gay marraige; essentially echoing the sentiments our President has publically stated? Well, Liberal Diggers would call her every racist, bigoted, name in the book; yet when someone pointed out that Obama has the exact same stance on the issue, they'd bury that comment underground faster than a corpse.
In short, most Liberals on this site (most, not all) only want to hear and believe information that benefits their causes and beliefs; yet they'll criticize Republicans, saying they do the same thing. - PoliticalMan922, on 07/20/2009, -25/+39He needs to do what he said he would. Otherwise, he's going to have some major problems.
- ChuckDees, on 07/20/2009, -8/+22http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/promises/
- thcobbs, on 07/20/2009, -2/+16Actually, Bill Maher said that he wished that Obama had more than a little bit of Bush's personality.
- lindenwold, on 07/20/2009, -13/+27very well put - prepare to get dugg down once this story hits the front page - but know that most of the people digging you down probably didn't read past your first paragraph.
I would digg every word of your post if i could . . . - Moralogic, on 07/20/2009, -3/+17Dont act like a dumbass just to boost your ego.
- mnocket, on 07/20/2009, -0/+13Are you aware that the democrats have a large majority in the House and a super majority in the Senate? They don't need republican votes. They are not negotiating with the republicans - they are shutting them out of crafting the bills. They DON'T need to negotiate everything. THAT'S politics as it is now. You should have dugg it up.
- Mockylock, on 07/20/2009, -13/+26I've never known a politician to be anything other than a hipocrite. I think it's a prerequisite.
- geodebug, on 07/20/2009, -15/+28A dumb article begets dumb comments.
Article Summed Up:
The easy stuff to pass was done in the first few months, now the president moves on to his more challenging goals. Has to work harder to keep the troops on message and deflect the opposition.
Digg comments summed up:
1) I never liked Obama so anytime there seems to be a setback in his agenda I'm going to remind you of how right I was and that you were all ignorant fools for not listening to me. *****, I voted for Mondale...
2) RON PAUL!: Because supporting 3rd party candidates with no chance of winning means never having to risk anything....
3) This is the first president I've supported that won so I'm disillusioned that not everything he promised to do is getting done on my expectation timetable. This must mean that Obama was the wrong choice.
4) Democrats and Republicans are all the same. Nothing at all has changed or ever will. No president has changed anything in America since the beginning of the two party system
5) Democrats are changing everything! Socialism/Marxism/Corporatism/Baptism! We have never changed this fast so quickly!!!!! Rush was right!
Feel free to cut & paste this into any political thread to fit in with all the other cut & paste comments. - pathouston22, on 07/20/2009, -4/+17Yeah, the increase costs of EVERYTHING isn't a tax, just a volunteer donation of Americans for the good of the planet.
- SirBruce, on 07/20/2009, -5/+18How are Republicans taking any position "trouble" for Obama, when his party has a supermajority in both the House and Senate? Republicans can't *do* anything so how in the world can you blame any of Obama's lack of doing something on them?
- inactive, on 07/20/2009, -11/+24Obama is a politician.
- Fygee, on 07/20/2009, -3/+15I'm not a Republican but I'd definitely, at the very least, put Reagan above Bush Sr. and definitely Bush Jr.
Bush Jr. deserves to be #7 in that six man list. - ironhide, on 07/20/2009, -2/+14"Then why is he fighting the release of his "long" birth certificate" - um, he isn't. No one has proven otherwise. His birth records are sealed by Hawaii state law. He doesn't have to do a thing. Also the information on his COLB is taken from the "long form" birth certificate and the only thing that matters per the Constitution is location of birth (not what doctor attended, or what hospital he was born in) and that place of birth is spelled out clearly - Honolulu, Hawaii.
Before you trot out the lame birther talking point about "anyone" being able to get a COLB regardless of location of birth, this is true, but said COLBs would indicate the true location of birth. - sharkydog, on 07/20/2009, -5/+17I just want to know how Clinton and Carter top this list.
- Quaestor44, on 07/20/2009, -0/+11jon stewart is a pretty big leftist.....just not as flaming
- Elranzer, on 07/20/2009, -5/+16Hint for Republicans: It's ok to actually criticize the guy you elected.
You should have tried it a little bit during Dubya's terms, instead of waiting until the 2008 elections to distance yourselves from him. - Charlotte_Web, on 07/20/2009, -11/+22Oblahblah is "being forced to improvise — stooping to respond to political foes"?
The Democrats own the House. The Democrats have a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate. The Republicans are almost completely shut out of the political process.
If Oblahblah can't get his agenda through, it's because cracks are forming in his own party! - LouisCipher777, on 07/20/2009, -1/+12lol. prisonplanet is hardly objective. they hate every president. and Alex jones has been proven wrong on several key issues (like FEMA death camps). he says a lot of things that make sense, but a lot more that don't, and he is hardly an objective source.
- Ebacherville, on 07/20/2009, -0/+11you had far more than 2 choices.. you know all the other people on the ballet... int he debates ect..
wake up you brainwashed fools! - pathouston22, on 07/20/2009, -16/+26Diggers blindly supported him during the election process. It's been entertaining to see the switch. Blind ignorance never wins.
- mnocket, on 07/20/2009, -1/+11LOL you're getting dugg down? I guess these people think he should not do what he said he would.
- Diggnabbit, on 07/20/2009, -1/+10Boy did he never say that the stimulus package would work immediately. No-one with half a brain said that or thought that.
- Cputerace, on 07/20/2009, -8/+17Facts! They shall not stand! Bury them!
