- freezervv, on 10/12/2007, -13/+178News isn't about looking stupid or smart: it's about looking loud. ^_^
- jetsetgo, on 10/12/2007, -25/+174pretty sure that's already been debunked as another Fox lie.
Keith Olberman had something to say about that. - LordSnooze, on 10/12/2007, -9/+139Any decent reporter should investigate and uncover the facts so they don't look stupid in the first place.
- goethean, on 10/12/2007, -19/+123> Perhaps he should take a swing at the Hillary camp
> where the story originated
Where'd you hear that --- Fox News? Rush Limbaugh? - akinder, on 10/12/2007, -10/+111He should go further than just a memo, he should demand an onair apology and retraction of the story, and if possible, get some airtime on Fox and grill them.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -10/+108One of the biggest problems I had with Kerry in '04 was how weak he was in responding to attacks on his character. It's a fact of politics that you're going to get smeared by your opponents, and if you're not ready to handle that, you might not be ready to handle the presidency.
In a twisted way, I'm glad Fox and Friends have already started their attacks on Obama, because it gives us a chance to see how he's going to handle the real trial by fire that will come a year from now.
So far, so good... - hbweb500, on 10/12/2007, -7/+78"pretty sure that's already been debunked as another Fox lie."
Wow. Is Fox immune from libel charges? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -23/+89Conservatives aren't even worth listening to at this point in history.
- sporkmonger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+56nreynolds may not know Arabic, but I do. And he's right. Madrasah / مدرسة simply means "school", nothing more. It's only within the echo chamber of American media that it takes on the meaning of "Radical Islamic religious school."
- g0atbutt, on 10/12/2007, -6/+53Good for him. I feel like the letter was firm and to the point, but also classy.
Well played Obama. - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -11/+57Obama is the man, there is no doubt.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+46It's ***** ***** that he has to defend the fact that he isn't a Muslim. I hate the fact that in this country even the news can be SO ***** RACIST. It's not a crime to be a Muslim. It never was, and never will be, unless these ***** redneck bastards get their way make their way from the news room to the oval office. ***** racism, ***** Fox news, and ***** ANY of you ***** who refuse to vote for whats looking to be this countries only hope because of his religion, race, color, or anything other than his stance on political issues.
- Koray, on 10/12/2007, -2/+43Oh please. My father is Muslim and I have no issue with his tone. The insight/fox piece did all it could to paint him as a radical Muslim, so he made it clear that he is far from it. Is being proud of your faith wrong? I am agnostic, but I have no problem with him being proud of his Christianity.
He wasn't saying that calling him a Muslim was malicious, he was saying that calling him a radical Muslim who was brought up to believe in Wahhabism was malicious.
Don't be so PC all the time. - SammyJr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+43This is good predictor for his Presidential campaign. He won't pull a Kerry and lay down when the Swift Boaters start up their attacks.
- altjeringa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+39I think he's trying to do exactly NOT that. If you note his style so far it's to emphasize the positive, not to get into mud hurling. A memo is good enough. Don't argue with an idiot lest he drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.
- patientXero, on 10/12/2007, -3/+37@ pagit
That's a quote from an UNCREDITED, ANONYMOUS SOURCE. This is low journalism and should not be considered credible. When I see evidence, I will believe it. Until then, it is just hearsay.
Besides, any "news" site that has the words "liberal media establishment" twice on it's front page is obviously pushing an agenda. - nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -7/+38FACT: Madrassa is the word for "school" in Arabic. (actually I don't know if it's arabic or not, but it's simply the word for school in another language)
- patientXero, on 10/12/2007, -9/+39@ hbweb500
No they aren't immune from slander or libel charges, but they were very sneaky about framing the report as news from an anonymous source. For something to qualify as libel/slander it has to be malicious, defamatory, and false. In this case, Fox News can just say that they did not have the intent to do harm and/or believed the story to be true at the time it was reported.
I smell the black hand of Karl Rove in that entire episode. - chickentonight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27Don't feed the trolls!
- oldman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27It's also pretty damn weasly to come out with the "I can't reveal my sources" and follow that with "it came from the Hillary camp" Way to go fox, you are completely without a moral compass and damn proud of it!
- Pentagonian, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28The ignorance patrol is out in full force
Madrassa is the Arabic word for school!!!! not a special kind of "fundamentalist" school, or a radical school, just SCHOOL
so yes Barack Obama went to a Madrassa... that sentence is exactly the same as saying Barack Obama went to a school
Let's just all keep the terminology straight... the story is completely bogus, but this whole madrassa confusion is getting annoying - Tallon29, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26My father once told me never to argue with an idiot. Anybody watching won't be able to tell who the real idiot is.
- calbff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24@eqisow
I don't think it's being called a Muslim alone that offended him. I think it's more that he ISN'T one but was incorrectly portrayed as one by a lazy journalist that offended him. I would imagine most Muslims would be equally offended if they were inaccurately called Christian. - HullCrushDepth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Because 2 years in school when you're eight turns you into what you are as an adult. For instance I'm a world renowned finger-painter and macaroni artist.
- m0nk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24Ok, you've got some serious issues....of course you still haven't read this article, nor any of the other reporting on the subject, and you obviously don't know a damn thing about the subject matter because Obama is a Christian. I think you're just trolling now...
- fishmasta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20As a Christian who's also liberal, I see no problem.
- Zanwar000, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21he wasnt offended to be called a muslim; why would he be? He was upset that we was trying to be portrayed as a traitor and a person who does not have America's interest at heart. Wouldn't you be upset if somebody just assumed you were a terrorist or fundamentalist just because you attended a school, one which you could not choose to not go to, or because of your middle name?
- haydesigner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Okay, I hate to twist this into a GOP-style "answer the question with a different question that is completely unrelated", BUT....
"[Kerry] could not defend himself because everything he said was shown to be a lie, or a seat of the pants made-up response."
Okay, would you please tell me exactly what George W. did NOT lie about??
Please, feel free to start with *his* military record. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22You'd rather bend over and take it cold, deep and without lubrication from whichever republican the oil industry pouts up in '08 instead?
- wslack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18@kolob, You said: "He hasn't won a contested national election yet."
The problem is that the presidential contest is the only national election. So you're saying he's unacceptable for the race because he hasn't won yet. Mhm hmm? - ptn4egl, on 10/12/2007, -16/+33Acadian- You actually believe that the Clinton camp submitted that info to Faux News?
"When the shepherd comes, the sheep will follow" - sirloin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19funny rather got fired for not double checking his sources and at least he had physical evidence.
somehow i doubt anyone at fox will be fired. - OreosRgood4me, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Jebadiah, he's a fresh face, a good speaker, and one with good solid ideas that he has stuck to in the past. He's promised (and has shown in the Illinois State Senate) to be cooperative with the other party (republicans) and yet still stands for what he believes in. Obama has promised us a new kind of politics, something that no other candidate has really even mentioned, and yet everyone wants.
Maybe that's the reason we are all 'waiting in line to suck his *****'. - m0nk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21Well, if you had rtfa, or any of the CNN reporting on this, you would know that it didn't come from the Hillary camp. Who's the sheep now?
- yossarian24, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19I HATE negative political ads/campaigns... if you care about America then show your positive side, not the other's negative side... I will be really impressed with Barak if he continues to run "positive" as he has committed hisself
- patientXero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17I'm not a Democrat. I'm not a Republican either. But I never believed that Clinton leaked the "Obama is a terrorist sympathizer" stories. It never made sense to me that she would do something like that just 2 days after declaring her candidacy - the timing is too suspicious.
- siszam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Sigh..........Not all Christians are far right. Most thinking people don't tow a party line and can think for themselves. Certainly the Republicans have demonstrated the opposite of Christ like behavior.
- PackerX, on 10/12/2007, -14/+28I was all for this, until I got to the end:
"To be clear, Senator Obama has never been a Muslim, was not raised a Muslim, and is a committed Christian who attends the United Church of Christ in Chicago. Furthermore, the Indonesian school Obama attended in Jakarta is a public school that is not and never has been a Madrassa.
These malicious, irresponsible charges..."
This just doesn't sit right with me. The emphasis on, "He's not a Muslim! He loves Jesus!" is bad form. While Fox News deserves to get reamed for the crap they continue to spew, I don't like the attitude it takes towards the end. - galore, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Oh, I am so glad you clarified this. I am sure that Fox knows that its viewers are aware of this linguistic fact. There is just no way that anybody could think that "madrassa" can be understood as a fundamentalist brainwashing institution. Because in the past we never, ever heard of terrorists being indoctrinated in madrassas.
- hoppdawg, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20was hoping this would be on par with 2pac's "Hit'em Up"
- Sp1k3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Which side of the political spectrum of is fascism on?? Oh yeah that's right! ;)
- fishmasta, on 10/12/2007, -10/+24It wasn't Hillary either. Turns out that was also a lie.
- sirloin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16yeah a bush supporter calling kerry a liar is hilarious..
LOLOLOLOLOL
No i do belive you mean it was proven the swiftboaters had lied.. kerrys responcs was weak as they had run through their money and couldnt form a commerical response.
LOLOL though, thanks for the laugh..lol a bush supporter calling someone a liar... lololol
sorry still chuckling. - stredarts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13If you are suggesting that John Gibson should resign and that several fox producers should be fired, I entirely agree with you.
- benijuana, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15what about the current administration that wont spend a dollar to defend our troops? Not very long ago my mom and other military moms spent ridiculous amounts of money sending proper armor to my brother and his brothers-in-arms because she doesn't want him to come home with a hole in his chest. Why'd she do it? Because there was no one else to do it for them.
- galore, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16are you for real?
- meamog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13What's he supposed to say?
"I'm not a Muslim! Not that there's anything WRONG with that..."
He's stating he's not Muslim, he's Christian. Nothing more, nothing less, and it's in language everyone can understand. - Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16"Fact?"
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means. - Sp1k3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Yes, damn those blasted evil liberals that want to make sure our troops are safe, with the proper equipment, and would prefer peaceful resolution to feuds rather than armed conflict. Don't they have balls? Damn those liberals for spending 1% of our tax dollars to make sure people aren't starving in the streets. Damn those evil liberals for hurting oil company profits to save the planet from ecological destruction. And damn them most of all for just being so evil!
;) - artificial001, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18you republicans have had you chance. shut the ***** up and sit in the corner now while we take the country back where it ought to be
