I doubt the pattern has changed since Reagan. The wealthy are already the most taxed, and even if you taxed them to the limit, you wouldn't get a big enough revenue increase but to run the government for another few days.
Tax increases hit the middle class and poor the worst. In the Reagan years, 90% of income taxes came from the $35,000-and-up bracket. Nowadays that bracket is far closer to the poverty line than it is to the "wealthy." And if an appreciable increase in tax revenue can only come from brackets below that, count me out. I would rather forego the government services, since I don't expect to use them anyway. I am at a very low income bracket, but would expect to pay my own way even in a hospital.
Please stop taxing me at both ends so I can afford to do so. America is about independence, not pointing guns at your neighbors to make them pay your medical bill. - Corrosionx, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9Yeah, income tax was supposed to be for the richest 1% and temporary. See how that turned out?
Socialized health care is a nightmare. - stealthc, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Our incomes are taxed to feed a frivolous monetary policy, and then we, the consumers, the middle class and poor, have to eat all the corporate taxes too, in the form of higher prices. And just in case we escaped those, we pay sales taxes on those higher prices. I'd rather not have the taxes, neither do I want the lumbering bureaucracies and inefficient "services" they support. Just let me afford my own health care, thank you.

The reason that medicine and medical care is so expensive today is BECAUSE the government got involved in the first place. As soon as you start regulating and taxing an industry, you restrict its supply, and prices go up. ( http://www.harrybrowne.org/hb2000/print/health.htm )
It baffles me that high ranking officials don't even understand basic economics...
Or worse (and more probable)...they do understand, but realize that they can market their absurd ideas to the public to garner votes because they "sound good" in 5 second tv blurbs.
