- helgew, on 01/31/2008, -8/+108IMHO, if all we're left with by this summer is a choice between McCain and Clinton we will neither see real change nor anything resembling civility in the campaigns leading to November.
- Gabberwok, on 01/31/2008, -6/+60Calling Hillary out on her vote on Iran? About f***ing time. Although Obama, you should have been there to vote against that bill, since she can now pull out the "he doesn't show up to votes" card against you.
- 1jaxstate1, on 01/31/2008, -10/+53I think we can give up on RP winning the Republican nomination.
- ncairns, on 01/31/2008, -9/+51That's ***** propaganda spread by Paulies, neocons, and the Clinton Camp.
The picture in question - from which the entirety of this nonsense is derived - was taken while the national anthem was playing. According to Obama, he was *singing along* while it was being played. According to the US code, yes; every non-military person in attendance is supposed to have their right hand over their heart while the anthem is being played - but they're also supposed to be facing the flag. Everyone on stage had their backs to the flag, and was therefore in violation of the code.
Obama himself said of the accusation "[m]y grandfather taught me when I was 2. During the Pledge of Allegiance, you put your hand over your heart. During the national anthem, you sing."
And consider this statement, taken from an article from the St. Petersburg Times' Politifact:
"Modern custom does not require a hand over the heart," says Ann Garside, director of communication for the Maryland Historical Society, home of the original manuscript of the Star Spangled Banner. 'I think the bottom line is that you show your respect with your demeanor,' she said. 'Whether you put your hand over your heart, hold your hat at shoulder level or waist level, is really in this day and age irrelevant."
She pointed out that “the tune of the Star-Spangled Banner was originally a drinking song. If they can put the words to the tune of a rousing drinking song, to quibble over whether you put your hand over your heart is really ridiculous.” - nitsnipe, on 01/31/2008, -11/+47Well it looks like Obama will win the Democratic party nomination.
Let's hope Ron Paul wins the Republican and we can have ourselves a real debate. - manicallday, on 01/31/2008, -2/+34This comment is very enlightening. It intrigues me. The structure and the logic sequence is classic Fox. Further, the author of the statement, gives us insight on the demographic that buys into this logic -Alabama fans.
Let us break it down:
"I saw today where Obama supposedly will not salute the flag?"
What are the chances that this wasn't seen on Fox? Notice how the statement doesn't give too many facts. This allows the author to improperly contextualize the behavior.
"How can you be president of a country where you don't respect the flag and what it stands for?"
The second piece is brilliant. If you look closely it has nothing to do with the first part. The first part was a statement about Obama not saluting the flag. This question is about respecting the flag. However, without critical reasoning skills, it's easy to just conclude that Obama disrespects the flag. This is why red states love Fox. It presents a very simplified reality of life.
- Proctor, on 01/31/2008, -2/+32Only Obama would get any questions
- mike11stevens, on 01/31/2008, -7/+33Boo Hilary, Hooray Beer!
- goldfenix, on 01/31/2008, -3/+25I was at that speech, it was quite incredible. Overall, he only jabbed at Hillary about... 4 times, I'd say. And never by name.
Anyway, here's a picture I took.

The most Obama would be able to do is reinstate the assault weapons ban, which I don't think is a bad thing. I hunt and I've never needed an AK-47 to kill a deer. The NRA is far too powerful for an outright ban on handguns, and I'm assuming that's what you're referring to. If not, give some specifics and stop with the asinine blanket statements.
I agree REAL ID is a crock, but what are these other MANY violations of the constitution you speak of (outside of those portions that have already been ass-raped by Bush)? - mochaman, on 01/31/2008, -8/+27"If you choose change, you will have a nominee who doesn't just tell people what they want to hear," Obama told them. "Poll-tested positions, calculated answers might be how Washington confronts challenges, but it's not how you overcome those challenges; it's not how you inspire our nation to come together behind a common purpose, and it's not what America needs right now. You need a candidate who will tell you the truth."
Oh Snap! Right in the jugular. - tb0n3r, on 01/31/2008, -1/+18Yes, and as we all know, what politicians say, they always follow up on.
- londubh, on 01/31/2008, -1/+18I would love it for Obama to get the nomination, but the fight is far from over. Hillary will do whatever it takes to win it.
- proseandpromise, on 01/31/2008, -1/+18Do some research. You are on the internet, it isn't that hard to find his website and see speeches, interviews, and policy positions. It's hard to lay out a comprehensive plan in 90 second debate answers or 30 nightly news audio clips.
- MrTito, on 01/31/2008, -4/+20God, not this crap again. Let me analogize...
Hey, I hear McCain is really a Manchurian Candidate. I mean, you know what they were really doing to him in those P.O.W. camps, right? - Chiefster, on 01/31/2008, -2/+17I don't think Clinton's response about "aducious but not hopefull" really makes any sense given what Obama was saying. It was like a canned response she had waiting to say in any situation where she didn't have a good comeback. Obama is way to smart for her
- Tex, on 07/28/2008, -0/+14Harry Reid called that vote while Obama was on the other side of the country, despite having promised Obama he wouldn't call the vote 'til the next week. I'm not sure what Reid's motives were, but the fault was his.
- albrad84, on 01/31/2008, -0/+13I didn't think we would ever have a worse set of candidates than Bush and Kerry, but McCain and Hilary just might pull it off.... maybe
- MacEnvy, on 01/31/2008, -0/+13He's really talking about folks like cashman57 and EditorResponse, who show up in every Obama thread to spread known lies and troll for RP.
- MrTito, on 01/31/2008, -5/+17I'm just glad to see that he finally took a swipe at the Clintons with the "bridge to yesterday" comment. I was wondering if he'd throw that old campaign message back at them. I hope he can work it into the debate, too.
- chris9902, on 01/31/2008, -1/+12You know it could be even worse. What if McCain chooses Mr 9/11 as his running mate?
That guy looks like he's on his last legs. Giuliani by default anyone? - aliengoods, on 01/31/2008, -2/+13Your sentence structure is incorrect. Beer should always come before Hillary. That way you can listen to her.
- mtjohnson, on 01/31/2008, -1/+11Yea it's not about hunting, it's about arms! You can have my ballistic missiles when you pry them out of my cold dead fingers!
- Eldorian, on 01/31/2008, -1/+11http://www.barackobama.com/issues/iraq/
- DeQuinceysDiet, on 01/31/2008, -0/+10You are, of course, wrong.
The vote on Kyl-Lieberman was 76-22 with 2 absent. The two absent being McCain and Obama.
http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_li ... - relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -0/+10He said he won't take the VP spot.
- tyzent, on 01/31/2008, -0/+9why would you want to listen to her? hilary starts talking and you reach for the alcohol, that seems right to me
- inactive, on 01/31/2008, -0/+9Yeah, he really needs to say something like: "Bill Clinton built a bridge to the 21st century; now Hillary wants to cross it back over to the 20th century."
- SheilaNoya, on 01/31/2008, -1/+10Obama has stated his very detailed plan for Iraq on MANY occasions. My bony old fingers would fall off if I tried to type it all out for you, but try going to his website. You should also listen to his GREAT speeches. He has a "practical" way to get us out with honor so we can finally end this nightmare for both us and the Iraqi people.
- MindTrigger, on 01/31/2008, -1/+10A warmongering, economic and foriegn policy illiterate friend who speaks almost as poorly as Bush in public. McCain is really the best the GOP has to offer? Are there no intellectual republicans capable of running for office? What a joke.
- Loonacy, on 01/31/2008, -9/+18Sorry, the 2nd amendment isn't about hunting.
- test5477, on 01/31/2008, -2/+11thats ironic because Obama right now is like the pied piper, playing the tune people want to hear but no giving them any details about what is to come.
- MindTrigger, on 01/31/2008, -0/+8First of all, I think you are naive to assume the Clinton machine is finished yet. Secondly, lets hope these two don't implode tonight in their one on one debate, and resort to an angry cat fight. They don't need to be turning off any independents (my party) at this point.
- MrBogard, on 01/31/2008, -3/+11Life long democrat and liberal socialist here, and this is the one policy of the left that really drives me crazy. I love guns, and statistically assault rifles are almost never used in assaults! If people want to own AR-15's and AK-47's as a matter of hobby and interest they should be allowed such freedoms. Lets face it, a semi-automatic AK-74 (I want one :P) is realistically no more deadly than a hunting rifle or in the matter of CQC, a handgun.
Banning assault rifles is *wrong*.
With all that said, there is a bigger picture here and Obama has my vote--not that we really have much of a say over who gets the nomination in PA. - asa400, on 01/31/2008, -2/+10Why the hell would "Paulies" (as you so eloquently put it) spread propaganda about Obama? I just sent an e-mail refute to that same propaganda, and I'm a Ron Paul supporter. Sorry to mess up your blanket generalization. Here ya go:
"That's ***** propaganda."
Fixed. - MacEnvy, on 01/31/2008, -2/+9If your opinion is that every candidate is the same, all that means is that you don't have a very well-informed opinion.
- aliengoods, on 01/31/2008, -1/+8But they'll still have a friend.
- mrood, on 01/31/2008, -0/+7Too bad he can't tell us how he would go about that withdrawal. As far as the withdrawal of combat troops go, there is no daylight between his position and Hillary's.
- starkruzr, on 01/31/2008, -0/+7McCain can beat Hillary. He cannot beat Obama. The choice for Democrats is clear.
- bbtweb, on 01/31/2008, -2/+8perhaps you should read his 60 page document on his position on all the issues, what he proposes, and what he's done. His website really is a good resource if you read it.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -2/+8Yes, "Al Quada." Congratulations on your ***** spelling, Suzy Wang.
- unclemeat, on 01/31/2008, -0/+6Wow. Big deal over a big nothing. Changing your feelings on a candidate because he forgot some old useless tradition? How about based on their policies?
- ziptnf, on 01/31/2008, -0/+6Excellent point, ncairns.
Plus, if the fact that a picture was released with Obama without his hand over his heart during the national anthem is enough to sway your decision as to who to pick for president, please don't vote. You are obviously a bad decision maker. - br0ck, on 01/31/2008, -1/+7And regarding Real ID, read this letter from him which explains that he doesn't like it and explains how it got through the senate attached by the House to a tsunami relief bill : http://www.eduwrit.com/blog/?p=1004
- lewhich, on 01/31/2008, -0/+6Extremely good analysis .. couldn't have put it any better
- theutopian, on 01/31/2008, -1/+7And he would only do that if Pakistan failed to act on the intelligence first.
- wolfzombie, on 01/31/2008, -2/+7Forget tax cuts. You know the real way to win over the public is to offer everyone a free 24 pack of their choice of beer.
- jdotter, on 01/31/2008, -1/+6I think he's going to pick Huckabee to grab the Conservative Christian base. Now that's a scary ticket IMHO.
- lenwood, on 01/31/2008, -1/+6Wouldn't it just be great if these two stopped ripping each other up and focused on their plan(s) for leading America?
http://www.seeyadubya.com/ - FredFredrickson, on 01/31/2008, -4/+9What a surprise - he's got Ron Paul on his buddy list.
